ignore the redditors here, 28mm is ok if you have small wrists (6in) or you just want something unobtrusive. 31mm is better though.
>>
>>61892446
28mm is literally a womans size m8. 31mm would be considered a boys size. 32mm and above is where you can say it's a mens size.
>>
>>61892634
>see? my watch is 33mm which means i am a man. anything below that makes you a boy or even woman. upvote me fine sir

Unless it's super-vintage, don't go below the mid-30's.

I'm having trouble deciding between a sarb017 or a sarg005.

I like the screw down crown but the face and hands look kinda memey
>>
>>61894083
sarg is more no nonsense design while the alpinist is a bit more polarizing. I love my alpinist but understand why someone would not like it. The sarg is a bit bigger though compared to the alpinist so factor that into your decision as well. The compass crown does not screw down on the alpinist so I consider the thing not suitable for swimming so the screw down main crown sorta is null.
>>
>>61894083
The hands are the best part man.
I was thinking getting a sarg005 (I think you posted an 007 by the way), and when I looked into getting replacement hands for it, I realized I wanted the SARB.
>>
>>61894175
I would buy the SARB in a heartbeat if it didn't have the compass ring. The face, the markers and those hands are beautiful imo.
>>
>>61894408
After wearing mine all the time you really don't even notice the compass ring. Just blends right in.
>>
Should I buy this meme?
>>
>>61894901

hey you guys probably know this, my manual winding watch which is pretty old has been running very fast, where I have to basically reset it every 30-60 mins. what do I do? do I have to get it serviced? where do I get it serviced?
>>
>>61895233
So how fast is it running exactly
>>
>>61895299
im new to watches. how exactly do i tell?
>>
>>61891990
the 38 makes me feel like a trap, 28 is insane
>>
>>61895327
Well, either you use a device or program to listen to the watch and tell you the current rate it is running at. Or you simply let it run for a period of time and compare the actual elapsed time to what the watch is indicating. Expressed in + or - seconds per day, usually.
>>
>>61895417
>device or program to listen
what the hell? how do i set that up?
>>
>>61895431
something that listens to the watch pallet fork
>>

Set the watch to a time exactly the same as another clock (digital or computer)
Record the difference at other times.
Done.

>>
>>61898897
So the main issue with that, technically speaking, is that cheaper watches with black bezels (I think ring or circle would be closer than sphere, it isn't an MB&F time machine) and cases is that they use a cheap PVD or other coating, which will scratch or tarnish easily which will destroy the aesthetic you like so much since it won't be black anymore. You can get better quality coatings at higher prices. If you don't care about durability, just search '(watch brand) PVD' and you should get plenty of watches with similar aesthetic.

You can snorkel with it, it has 200m water resistance. You can use the compass as a compass anon, that is why it is there. You can get the direction. Given that it is part of the 'Alpinist' line, I'd assume it was designed around climbing mountains and doing nature shit.

>>61900193
If you want it for the look, go for it. If you grow tired of it in a year or two, you didn't spend that much money on it.
>>
>>61900272
oh shit, when i go snorkeling, (which is something I and the majority of the population do often) what will i wear? It's a better watch in every way than an ETA meme khaki.

It's fairly slim and very dressy with the gold and green so it works as a dress watch, but its got 200m water resistance (so you could take it snorkeling). people wear divers with suits these days, so this definitely qualifies as a dress watch.

As for the job comment, you were the one talking about snorkeling just now. As if anyone living a real life cares about that retarded shit.

the decoration is quite similar. I haven't seen it used anywhere else at least

Wow, Seagull has really stepped up their movement finishing.

No but seriously, why does Omega not do their trademark copper plating anymore? In the era of display casebacks you would think they would want to use something that stands out and which actually recalls historical Omega movements.

So lets say i want to buy a watch with a screwdown crown. I can either get it in manual wind(my prerference) or automatic. Would the daily unscrewing and re-screwing of the crown to wind the watch wear the crown stem down too quickly?

My disinterest with Paul is putting resale value as a top priority. Yea I consider the value in proportion to what I am paying but don't let resale dictate my buys. I tend to like a watch for it's visuals and design aspects. Paul has such simpleton commentary when it comes to those aspects, which is boring. There are plenty of decent watches that while are not luxury items, they are far from shitters.

That's just the problem with TGV he shilled Squale and he shills designer SKX's. Spending anything above $400 for a Seiko is a fucking mistake. Don't get me wrong I love my Seiko's and the SKX is awesome, but him buying $500 customized editions is him promoting cancer in the watch community. I get it, everyone can't own a Rolex but in reality you could own a second hand one or an Omega that is respectable if you saved yourself from 5 Seiko shitters. Hell even thot's manage to stop buying 15 Micheal Kors shitter shoes/bags and get a good pair at some point.

No one mentions either of those when watch channels in general get brought up.
My point is that those are pretty much the only youtube channels worth mentioning really. Talking about paid shills who sell themselves is pointless, they don't add much more than seeing how a watch wears on their wrist and even then it is only relevant if you have similar sized wrists.
>>
>>61906403
That is a fair point i suppose. It would be nice to have a YouTube channel that went over the history and dimensions of iconic watches however.
>>
>>61906425
That would be great. Hoodinkee touch on it in the watch talks but that needs the person to be passionate about that watch and history and them to ask about the history of that watch. The ones about the old Heuer chronographs with a couple of the people they have had on were really good imo. People seem to get very passionate about the Monaco versions.

Since I was probably about 10, I've loved watches. Not those fancy, overrated smart watches everyone my age seems to love, but REAL watches. Watches with mechanical parts, and hands instead of numbers. Being very young at the time, I obviously couldn't afford anything more than $10. Petty or shallow as it may be, when I turned 14 I decided it was about time I fulfilled a personal goal of mine to have a skeleton watch. My dad gave me $40 to put towards a watch for my birthday, but after searching high and low online I couldn't find a reliable skeleton watch that I really liked. So I saved my money and after doing chores for my parents and grandparents for a couple months I had saved up about another $60 and was able to buy this beauty. I know it's a relatively cheap watch compared to all these other guys with Rolexes and whatnot, but I'm proud of it and wanted to share it with you guys.

Yeah he says he sold computers but you can tell he flips watches or deals them becuase he has the money to do so. When he sold his Gold sub I think he only did that becuase he knew he was going to make profit off it.

Enjoy and wear it in good health. Check out the other recent thread on what makes a good watch. It's really not about the money or prestige for a lot of folks, but this hobby will absolutely, positively make room for whatever amount of $$$($$$$$$) you want to spend.

Save $10 more and get a Vostok Amphibia for around $60

Casio AE-1200.

Don't buy this dogshit. Every Vostok deserves to be crushed.
>>
>>61909512
They're more like $70-80 unless you get one of the really ugly ones.

>>61909590
You can look at all the Amphibia models here.
https://meranom.com/en/amphibian-classic/
I'm personally a 710 kind of guy, but I guess the 420 and 960 would be the least clunky for a diver watch.

Just in case you need to know which way North is while you're diving.

Note: You will also need a compass.
>>
>>61909840
Well there's a reason why the bezel is usually the first thing to go when someone buys a Vostok. I never understood why they used a bidirectional friction bezel instead of a ratcheting one, but I guess it's because they were designed on a shoestring Soviet budget and machining out the grooves would mean gulag for the engineers.

>No but seriously, why does Omega not do their trademark copper plating anymore?
Because The Swatch Group knowingly and deliberately destroyed every last vestige of Omega's movement design and manufacturing tradition barring the MOTFM.

You may not recall this, but for many years after The Swatch Group bought Omega, it was reduced to being a marketing and branding operation for watches manufactured entirely by other parts of the conglomerate.
>>
>>61906128
>respectable
Not everyone purchases watches as mere totemic carriers of the false "respectability" imbued on them by branding and marketing.

The real cancer in the watch community is consumerists who totally fall for the modern art of watchmaking, which consists of treating the actual manufacturing of the watch as a cost center to be minimized in favour of the enhanced "prestige" that can be more easily created through marketing and advertising. Modern Omega being a prime example, though at least not so egregious as IWC and Panerai.

>>61910357
And it all goes back to those dirty fucking Japs for destroying the perfectly stable watch economy.

Nonsense. Grand Seikos are probably the best finished production watches in the world, period. Seiko throws so much labour at the ~5,000 watches a year that Grand Seiko makes, that their level of finishing has more in common with JLC than Rolex.

If you cannot tell that level of finishing appart from a $400 Seiko, then you are an absolute pleb.
