Bought the headphones in the OP on sale for 50 dollars with free shipping. They came in last night and I am impressed.

Definitely the best budget headphones I've owned.

So I just recently got a new pair of Beyerdynamic headphones and I'm loving it, but I'm still constantly switching back and forth between audio inputs for different purposes.

I'd like a hotkey or something to make it faster. What should I do for that? I'd like to just do something natively; there seem to be a lot of little programs for it, but I try not to get a thousand tiny purpose-built things like that.
>>
>>61750285
too bad about the glued-on earpads, just because it's cheap shouldn't mean it should be treated as disposable. I still dont understand why

I am a house waifu in training /g/, and I love wearing my headset and doing chores, listening to music or audio books from my pc. I know they make wireless headphones, but I want to have one that does it all; chat and listen. I don't need exceptional audio quality or exceptional mic. I tend to use the PX3 turtle beach, I dont know what it is about it, but i can go very far from the source and still get audio, even to around the outside of the home, garage, upstairs and downstairs, It will cover a whole small apartment with ease. But these headsets are out of print and the refurbished ones are starting to last less and less as the housing tears from wear and travel.

Does anyone else have some advice for wireless headsets that have great distance? Google fu seems worthless in this regard. People are more concerned about their audio settings and the quality of the frequency in high wifi environments.

Let me know what you've bought and if you have any advice.

>mandatory perimeters
>Budget
The cheaper the better, I dont need a high end set, just a long distance one that isn't like buying a used car.
>Location

USB seems mandatory for wireless headphones with good range
>Type of headphone
PC headset, two ear pieces, comfortable to wear for hours and hours, overear muff prefered
>Open or closed
Either
>Comfort level
Not perfect but no insertable headphones. I can wear PX3's for hours, I'd like the same for performance
>Sound signature
Audio quality is not 100% important other than it plays audio and doesn't spike the audio.
>Past headphones
PX3, shitty wired headphones all under 10 dollars.

Additionally, outside microphone rather than in built will be preferable if expensive. mic volumne from surrounding noise is somewhat of a deal to me. Ultimately though I am focused on range, please know enough about the range of a suggestion that you can give me some kind of idea of how many rooms or feet you can receive away from source

What signature do these have ? I assumed they were a new head fi meme, and they looked a little tacky at first, but apparently they're actually good?
>>
>>61751075
It's Focal, if you don't know who they are you're too immersed in the headphone world. They make great speakers. I have a pair.

The signature is very very neutral, like the HD600/650.

No niggerbass, no bloat, no pleb smile.

Tards who listen to dubstep and anime tunes will no doubt think they sound boring.

If they were like $500 I'd be all over them but $1k is too much for any headphones. I could upgrade my bedroom speaker system for that.

Closed, and they have to be very closed. I don't mind about sound leaking in to me, but my sound can't leak out.

maximum. 7-8hrs a day solid wearing. I will be wearing them at home, never out of the house so it doesn't matter how stupid they look, as long as they're comfortable.
>Past headphones
Currently wearing some Sennheiser HD428 that I got 6+ years ago. They work, but they're becoming less and less comfortable as the padding wears out.

I don't want/need studio quality sound, but something a little nicer than the Sennheisers I currently use would be nice I suppose. Comfort, closed-ness and longevity ultimately the most important.

Many thanks folks, appreciate any help. I've had a quick google but I'm really not sure what to look for.

Define "cheap"

For the most part there's no point in buying an amp for less than $150 or so. Back in the good old days before headphone amps became fashionable buying a headphone amp - any headphone amp - was a pretty safe bet you'd get something better than your iPhone. Not so these days, too much me-too cash grab crap.

The cheapest amp anyone should even consider is an O2.

Can I use the headphone DAC/amp in my mixer to drive headphones or am I better off getting a separate DAC/amp?

The specs for the headphone out read "75ohm output impedance, >105mW into 75 ohms, >40mW into 600 ohms". Is that any good?

Also, what are some good alternatives to the K702s that are in the same price range or lower, open backed, comfy for 16+ hour a day wear, and have a detachable cable? It seems nothing beats the K702s.

Hey what do you guys think of rtings.com? At first I saw their suggested products(beats/bose all over) and immediately thought garbge paid ads but they actually have measurements and what looks like a good testing rig.
I guess its possible beats improved their headphones over the years. They say they have great bass and lower mid reproduction but treble is dog shit.
Here is their dt990 measurements which, considering they're literally on my head right now, seem good.
Decent review source y/n?
>>
>>61754078
This general doesn't really like rtings, but I don't really have any issue with them
>>
>>61754113
Would you say its safe to assume their measurements are correct and a good source to use while window shopping?
>>
>>61754078
Beats have improved over the years but they still fall flat in a few areas such as
>The aesthetic
>The build quality
>Fairly muddy sound signature
The price/performance is fairly low on them. That being said, the second iteration of them certainly improved performance over the first which were absolutely trash. I'd say they're just darker sounding now.

Rtings is a great website though. They take a good approach to reviews and I like that they put a number value behind what they rate for comparison.
>>
Would the Monoprice amp be better than the Fulla 2 for 300 OHM headphones?
>>
>>61754177
If you need power than a fulla 2 your best choices are a hi-fi me diy sabre dac(i might have the name wrong but its a really fucking good dac for the price) and a magni 2 at the high end of the price spectrum, micca origen+ in the middle, and fx-audio dac x6 at the low end.
Having used the dac x6 I can vouch for it and answer any questions and I'm sure other people could do the same for the magni.

Thanks guys. My next question is at what point would spotify premium(320 opus) stop being transparent? Is it transparent on hd598/dt990 class headphones?
I have some of my favorite music in flac from rutracker but I'm not on any of the private trackers and don't wish to be. I have 5 more months of tidal free and it has some stuff but I only pay $5 for spotify.
>>
>>61753673
I own all three and the magni as an amp drives them slightly better than the fulla 2. The fulla sounds slightly flatter and less detailed than the magni. I use the fulla 2 as my dac, or you can buy the modi as your dac and have less features.
>>
>>61754276
Spotify premium will be perfectly transparent for that setup. Only on repeated material would you possibly notice the difference between lossy and lossless if the lossy files are 320kb/s.

Spotify should have a premium lossless streaming service soon. Best advice is to avoid paying for tidal. I have a few years free because of the Sprint voucher shenanigans, but I refuse to give my money to a company that supports the garbage known as MQA

As in stuff you've listened to for a few months or even years repeatedly. Music you default to in a listening session. That's the only way it's discernible, because I'm sure you have certain recording artifacts, little details like musicians saying things softly in quiet passages or scuffing the floor with their chairs, things along those lines. Compression may ruin those things, but it's stuff that's only picked up after listening to that track at least a few times usually more.

>>
>>61754078
They're learning and open to discussion. From what I see, they do not seem to have a general intuition gained by long experience but are willing to experiment.

The first and most important problem is the lack of industry standardization of headphone measurements. As is common to this industry, Rtings is trying to come up with a better way to convey "audio quality". The gist of this is that the "frequency response measurements" seen on Rtings is not standard, and requires some adjustment when trying to compare it to another website, such as innerfidelity.

The second problem is even with a standard information layout, the equipment has distinct inaccuracies and failures in modeling. Even though the equipment costs tens of thousands of dollars, it still has a few differences from a typical human head. Sometimes, the difference can be significant. Rtings is aware of this part, and they are trying to update their current methods and data with a new methodology.

>>61754276
>what point would spotify premium(320 opus) stop being transparent
That is not the best way to ask that question. It doesn't have very much to do with your headphones, unless the headphone response were so severely skewed that it defeated the intended error shaping and masking model used.
So, the answer to that is *never*. You will not find a headphone or speaker good enough to make lossy coding more obvious than what it already is.

The real answer is that the ability to detect artifacts will depend on the method used to analyze audio and distribute, the audio data that is used, and your ability to recognize when the combination goes wrong (codec, track, listener).

Inherently subjective. Figure it out yourself.
But, I wouldn't go anywhere near the the Clip+ now.
General notes:

-Very small, very light.
-Cheaply made.
-Rockbox feature suite
-Below average voltage output.
-Low Z out, capable of output into low Z loads
-Higher than average noise floor, particularly for balanced armatures

Is form factor the primary priority? Sound quality? Or something else?

just get the FiiO X1 or X3 at that price range.

The Sandisk Clip+ was only ~$30 new before discontinuation. That was a great value since there was Rockbox support for it.

Don't bother with the newer Clip Jam either. Never going to get Rockbox support because of limitations. It's over for the Clip unfortunately.

I don't think you're going to be able to drive those with a clip they need like 51mw into 62 ohms if I remember correctly but of course if you pick up some IEMs that'll be no problem.
The xDUOO x3 looks awesome to me at $100 and it's listed with prime shipping right now. Throw in whatever SD card you can afford.

Filters, output impedance, and expectation bias. The magni is good in the first two regards, so it's the third.
>>
>>61755093
>Is the X3 worth it?
It's got a more powerful amp, an entire socket for the line out, and I think that's pretty much it.
>>
>>61755102
It's good, but more expensive amps must be better in that regard. They wouldn't be more expensive if they offered no empirical benefits. Right...?

I can easily blind test the difference after volume matching, so I am trying to understand the science behind it. I guess there must be some distortion, because the Magni after all is a cheap, $99 device.
>>
>>61755143
There are no measurements for the magni so it's pointless to speculate either way. I'd suggest you try blind testing against something with measurements, maybe an O2 of something.

I ran my HD280's off my Alesis. When I got 300ohm headphones, I bought a separate amp. Then it became clear how noisy the mixer was, and the built-in dac wasn't that great. Now it's on the other end of an a/b switch where it gives me no troubles while I listen to an external dac.

They don't need some arbitrarily selected power input. The user defines what playback level they want and sets the electrical requirements in accordance.
The obsession with power is undeserved. Headphones are defined by voltage drive. Power can only be appropriately used if the headphones impedance is nearly constant. Other than planar dynamics and coil dynamic in-ears, this is not the case.

So I'm looking at these M1060s and they're everything I want from the price to the sound to the style... mostly. My biggest issue is the headband. I find this style of headband ugly as shit. Is there a way to replace it with something more subtle and normal looking?

Anyone have any experience with these they wanna tell me about?

I received my K7xx from Massdrop on Thursday and have been using them for the last couple of days, and although they're decent, I can easily say that my HD650s are much better. Out of the box they're more comfortable, at least. I forgot that the K7xx series had the elastic band mechanism, and I guess I'll be SOL once they fail. Still not bad for the price point, although I'm not sure if they serve a purpose in my collection because they'd don't quite stand out. I used to have the K701s for a short while 6-7 years ago, and they were distinct even if they were flawed. The bumps on the headband made them unwearable, however.

A simplification either way, but if you were aware what is left out, you wouldn't have said the stuff you just did.
>reach a decent volume on shitty sources like my phone and motherboard but I swear the sound goes to shit, the treble gets even worse
There are many variables. Too many. Cannot narrow it down for you. The basic issues.
-Digital overload (excess digital volume, effects, phase shift...)
-Electronics cannot handle full level output/Headphone impedance too low
-Multisensory input and biases
>30 something mw into their 250ohm
Stop that. The power stuff doesn't do crap.
Beyers in general do not have remotely constant impedance.

Thicker wiring wouldn't fit the arrangement. Would require redesign of entire capsule.
As to why the capsule is designed as such, it's compact. TRS style connections would be far more bulky and less secure.
No stress is applied near wire, unlike k701 design. Still much harder to work with voice coil wire. Can be an issue given the contact spring defect.

That's the only reason? I thought it was supposed to because of some sort of audio engineering hocus pocus. Turns out it's just a ploy from shysty Sennheiser to make it impossible for people to repair their own gear, making it necessary to shell out for expensive replacement parts.

the bigger they are, the less sweaty actually

on-ears are actually the worst for sweat because they're literally squeezing your ear to your skin. AKGs are the biggest earpads I know so they're pretty much sweat-free in room temperature as only the top edge of my ears touch the pads, and the K701/702 velour earpads seem pretty "permeable" (or whatever word is better to describe it) to air.

I'm not after really expensive headphones desu, no intentions of doing that.
>>
>>61757619
>over ear headphones have hardly been used because my ears get too hot (Audio-Technica)
that's because those are barely over-ear headphones

I had an M30X and I still have a 7506, and yeah, they sort of fit your earlobe within the pad, but it's sort of folded in and in contact with it from all sides. Both may as well be on-ear headphones to be honest as it's a world of difference to bigger (full-size) over-ear headphones.

The HD6XX or K7XX is $200. It's around double what the M40X is, and just a bit what the M50X cost. I'll tell you that the extra cost is worth it for the comfort alone, let alone the SQ upgrade provided the lack of noise isolation is not detrimental to your situation. Neither headphone is perfect though, despite the price that may seem excessive already to a normal person.
>>
>>61757693

I think £70 would be a limit for the time being because there is a ton of stuff I'm looking at getting. I still like keeping an eye on the market and what people have experience with of course.
If I got those pricey headphones I'd be looking at amps then, you know how it goes.

They're speakers by KEF... they specialize in home theatre equipment and have very competitively priced gear that has sound rivals offerings from other companies that cost 5 times as much. I fact I've see plenty of posts on other threads comparing the ls50s to other much higher end speakers they cost over $10k. I really have no idea tho so I was just asking around about them. I'm going into 2001 audio video tomorrow to get a demo of them tho.

Is there some human discernible difference in audio quality if some other wire was added inline?

As I understand, the wire shown is stupidly thin because it's the same wire that forms the coil. Placing another, thicker wire there would adulterate the audio path and make it less pure ... Or at least that's what the marketing department would tell you.

Meh. LS50 got a lot of hype a couple years back. More than deserved.
LS50 bass rolloff starts high, bump in the high midrange.

Coincidental driver has close sum point, can be more easily used in the nearfield than most other 2 way loudspeakers. Has wider vertical listening window, for better or worse. More ceiling and desk reflections, but it sound similar whether you stand up or sit down. LS50's directivity performance is lacking compared to the 3-way coincidental designs from KEF and Genelec, particularly at LS50 X-over point.
Coincidental driver in the 2 way configuration presents potential issues of modulation, as well as general issue of designing surround that both allows for linear excursion and even sound dispersion for the tweeter. Theoretically removed or heavily reduced by the transition to 3-way.

If you wanted a compact coax speaker, KEF's R300 is smoother in the upper end, and has some bass. If we give up the coax, other small nearfield designs can serve as alternatives: Neumann KH120, Genelec M040, and so on.

PM3 is basically MSR7 with a bass boost.
Both are compact headphones, upper midrange-low treble dip with a peak around 9-10kHz like almost everything does. Neither suffers much from the typical closed-back midrange unevenness, which is good. PM3 bass boost extends to lower midrange.

I know that for American buyers, PM3 can be found sometimes discounted from Oppo direct.

>>61762193
>rining wall of hell
You have to stop saying that. It's not remotely as important as you seem to think.
Indicates high-Q peak, with which "ringing" is inherently associated with. Frequency is lower than most other high-Q modes in headphones, so the period is naturally longer. Magnitude is moderate, so while it is not ideal, it's not a 4kHz tuning fork. It's a narrow 4kHz peak, nothing more or less.
>>
>>61762193
Why buy headphones with terrible flaws like that, in the first place?

>You have to stop saying that. It's not remotely as important as you seem to think.

It may not be as wide as peaks on beyers but it's a still peak that is precedent by a dip and followed by an EXTRA DIP that people both measure and hear. Also to anon that was thinking about M1060 vs LCD 2, M1060 also has an unusually high distortion in highs and a wonky square wave response that should negatively affect imaging. Still they are only 300$, maybe there will be a further revision as this rining problem can be solved by pads and some modding, and that weird pike n' dips make it look like they fucked up with tuning or rushed it.

I was thinking about those, but then I also found Abacus Cbox-3. It's the smallest 132×132×202mm one and it also goes the deepest specs wise 30 – 20.000Hz at -6dB. They are more of a local German brand that makes speakers and amplifiers, so the only measurements with comments I found were on aktives-hoeren. Doesn't look bad and they do go deep after correction, altho there is a deep before a bump in bass followed by roll off.

Luckily Abacus has test packages so I will try them out, I also want to try M040 tho and maybe KH120. They are all within same 600€ price range. Any other small near fields recommendations for 600€?

The narrowband notch doesn't mean much.
Either way, it's not smooth timbre. That is very much a downside of the m1060.
>wonky square wave
Stop that. Stop thinking that.
A square wave by definition operates on a limited subset of the frequency response. It samples points of the frequency response (every other term of an arbitrarily defined Fourier series) and tosses the rest out.
If you find square waves easy to understand that is one thing. But it is strictly less informative.

Go play with a Fourier Series generator sometime.

>>61764444
Abacus Cbox looks like it gets that bass response electronically. That can applied to any other loudspeaker. Maximum output is still given by mechanical driver limits. Since the driver and cabinet are small, this also means that total sound pressure and loudness will be limited.
>Doesn't look bad and they do go deep after correction, altho there is a deep before a bump in bass followed by roll off.
Like on this page?
http://www.aktives-hoeren.de/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=7214

The wiggles in the low end are room effects. Dips and peaks in the low frequency come down to how you place them.
The limited SPL is somewhat offset by their compactness, so you can just place them closer to your listening position.

The recommendations I would give tend to revolve more around directivity control, since that is the essential part that cannot be equalized. I'll try to come up with more in the next thread.
