Of course, I can simply not update at all (I didnt run any update since more than two months on my Edu) but it still annoying to find updates removing software. It will mess up nothing.
If you already have a nice graphical login screen (i.e. have a session manager installed), it will justt add a new option to the list of sessions to choose from.
If you uninstall it again, it may leave behind config files in your home directory, which do nothing and can safely be deleted or left there.

Bit of a late reply but I figured out what was causing it.

Some dirt, dust of other debris must have made one of the empty USB ports short circuit or something like that which caused Windows to think something was constantly being plugged/unplugged.

After cleaning it it finally stopped.

Any suggestions on how to price older/used PC rig parts?

I found good pricing information for my CPU, but I'm looking to sell some DDR3 RAM and a dying motherboard. I found the ram I'm trying to sell at $33 per module (new), and I have two of them. Found the CPU at $190 on eBay. I have the stock cooler too.

Finding info on my motherboard is problematic (I don't know what problematic/parts boards may sell for). I still have the I/O shield, though.

Here are the parts in question:

any recommend a good lightweight video editor?

like cutting out parts of video, while being able to seek through the video as well.

Linux and Windows option would be great

You can't. Windows won't install to external media. There is a version of windows called win-to-go that runs exclusively off external media, and can be moved from PC to PC at will. There's also WinPE environments, which are much more common and are equivalent to linux live disks. It's a bit of a pain to add apps to those, but it can be done.

How do programs and operating systems know which CPU cores to use?

Say I was using a 16 core ThreadShitter and playing a game, and it was using cores 1 to 4 at 100%, then I fired up WinRar and started unpacking a 35GB folder, then started an anti-virus scan or something too. How do the cores get allocated to WinRAR and my anti-virus scan and know to not use my first four cores that are already at 100%?
>>
>>61651664
to a degree, you still need to actually /install/ the programs you want to run with it, as you would with a fresh windows installation
as long as you have the installers, you can reuse them, provided wine can run them
check winehq's appdb site to get an idea of how well the programs you want to run are supported

some programs you use might have linux versions available, which you should use instead, others will have equivalents

one way or another though, the way you use your computer will need to change to some degree, though i'm sure you've considered this

if you don't have or know how to make a backup of your system, you should look into that first, you don't want to be that person who installs linux only to find he accidentally wiped everything without a backup

your operating system kernel takes care of that, by means of a scheduler
it decides what to place where, and will move things around when needed automatically
at least in some systems, the way the scheduler works can be tweaked, though this is beyond the means of a typical user

>>
>>61651803
i'm not sure which, if any, schedulers take immediate core frequency into account
i'm not certain it would matter, either
a higher clocked core indicates high load on that core, so you'd probably be better to place a new task onto a less-used core, which in turn gets clocked higher as it's load increases from the new task
if anything, it should pick lower clocked cores, if only by coincidence

My only biggest program that I use is Fl Studio 12 (which is the DAW) which is fine with Wine according to google search. My steam games are already Linux compatible but I don't want to deal with downloading them with a 260 kb/s inter speed. And my other stuff is only basic stuff like images and music.

Main reason why I want to try Linux (Mint is a good starter) is that I'm planning onto getting into Computer Science or web development which I'm planning on getting into soon. I heard that Linux is great for both of them (unless I'm getting memed). Basically, I want to understand and use Linux so I could get deeper into teaching myself about computes and other related stuff.
>>
>>61651914
you can reuse your steamapps folder, like you would between windows installations, at least for the windows versions of games
if there are linux versions of your games, it may be better to have steam download those instead, some of the files you have for them might be the same between the windows and linux versions, so you could try dropping those in and re-checking the files in the steam client, to try to reduce what needs to be downloaded

I'm moving out of my parents' house and need to buy my own Internet service (I'm moving to Nashville so XFINITY is the only option I have)

If I'm streaming/torrenting/gaming, is 100 Mbps enough for me, or is that overkill?
>>
>>61652015
100Mbps is enough for all of that, but xfinity probably data caps since they have a monopoly. Is it 100 up and 100 down? If you're streaming as in broadcasting, 10 is enough and 20 is overkill.

Torrenting is all about patience. I have 3Mbps down and torrent plenty for my needs

Gaming doesn't need much, you'll be fine no matter what.

Where'd you hear that rule? AFAIK there's nothing particularly bad about that, and a lot of times it makes sense to do. For instance:
-if (!success)
--if (mode7enabled) {
---do a thing;
---} else {
----do a different thing;
---}

Works totally fine.

Hello, I would like to know if there is a shorthand for prototyping functions with repetitive argument types.

I have looked and I can't seem to find relevant information, which makes me think there isn't. However, this is getting absurd and it looks silly. I know there are automatic types which can be used without explicit prototyping but I want short.

Nope. Cold boot > hybrid boot. There's higher chances of problems occurring after a hybrid boot.
Also if you don't know how to cold boot to desktop in 5-10 seconds or less on windows 7/8.1/10 you're doing it wrong or bloated up, check event viewer diagnostics performance for boot and shut down degradation.

you can freely access non-system drives while windows is in "fastboot" status, though you should be careful not to modify anything that was open in windows at the time it was "shut down"
you can read the system drive in that state, but not write to it (mount it read-only). forcing read-write mount is possible, but will break fastboot status, which might cause data loss (in things that were open)

I wanna say try to keep it, but be ready to send it back at a moments notice. Who knows, they might've sent you and the winner one each. They might've sent it to just you, and could email you soon about sending it back.
Enjoy, but be ready. They might come bust your knee caps, anon.

Guys, /g/ told me if I don't install gentoo and only use shitty FOSS made by hobbyists NASA will take me to Guantanamo for having furry porn on my PC.
Is this a meme? Why does the space agency want my amthro folder?

Any that's cheap enough in your opinion, that also has decent features.
For example, I got a raise and decided to treat myself to something fancy. Bought an Asus Maximus IX Code, but it was defective when I received it. Sent it back for RMA, and through the process, they fucked me over three times ranging from another defective board, and sending me the wrong board twice (Z170-K), and everytime I had to pay for the shipping over there because muh freedom. So in return, they were kind enough to give me a discount code for any Asus motherboard on Newegg (my choice). I didn't want to go for something as expensive this time, so I went for the Maximus IX Apex. Ended up costing me $150 ($330 on retail at the time), and it's been pretty comfy so far.
Would I recommend it? Probably not at the retail price - on sale, however? Sure.

May newer linux kernels have better performance or is it only for a wider support of new hardware?

I've never modded a PC game in my life;

I've just downloaded Devil May Cry 3 from Steam.
I've also downloaded the supposed files for the Style Switcher mod, but there's no readme. What do I do with them? Where do I put them?

In pic related there's a slot for "GPS card", what is it and where can I get it?
>>
I'm confused with variable length arrays (VLA) on C. As far as I understand, constant length arrays allow the compiler to put in constant jumps in stack memory, e.g., go 40 steps forward after "int a[10];". However, with variable length arrays the jump offset would have to be read from memory, costing a memory fetch and a register.

If I understood correctly, this would make getting across a VLA essentially a pointer operation, about as bad as using heap memory. In addition, the VLA is later removed and the jump has to be done backwards too.

However, I'm told that it's still more preferable than heap allocation whenever possible. Why is this?

looks the same as the sd card slot, you sure it isn't just a manufacturer-provided sd card with GPS map data on it?
my friends' ford focus 2012 does similar with a (regular) sd card/slot

So after making a Windows XP gpu passthrough VM I wanted to see how far back it would go.

For legacy vidya I thought I would try Windows 98 with a passed through 7100GS and it worked!

The only problem I have is that 7xxx cards aren't officially supported on 9x and I have to use these modded drivers:
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/97786-geforce-67-and-8-agppci-e-driver-edition-for-win98me-by-zak/?do=findComment&comment=656166

The drivers work somewhat as I get 32bit colour and partial hardware acceleration however I can't get any resolution higher than 640x480 and DX is broken.

The readme for the driver said this might happen so I tried powerstrip but no dice.
The only other single slot pcie GPU I have left is a 6600GT which has 9x drivers but it's passively cooled and takes up the slot above it so I can't use it and I can't change slots around for iommu group reasons.

Anyone else here dealt with this?

I got this car used, the seller didn't provide the so called "GPS card"
But now that you mention it, it does look like micro SD card slot to load sd card with map data.

Is there a way to get my hands on ISO or IMG file to burn into the sd card?
Or do I need to buy specific one?

thank you. i think too. i used 4 different anti malware softwares. nothing at all.
and i recently fixed the not woring updating issue on win7 and did a lot of updating, so that is more likely.
>>
>>61658236
it's unlikely the owner took one out, it probably just never had one
my friends' car simply doesn't support maps when the card isn't inserted, so it came with a card
in this case, the maps are horribly out of date (timestamps are from 2009!), and i looked into it for him to see if there was some way to update them (for free...), turns out the map data is proprietary (no hope of dropping in maps from other sources), and even encrypted (so no hope of simply using a dump of someone else's newer card)
it's either buy from ford or nothing

might be different in your case, do some research into it

Even if it is, shouldn't dd copy it as is?
I've looked around, but couldn't find anything specific for Hyundai Accent.
I've found this
http://www.hyundainews.com/us/en/media/pressreleases/45514/hyundai-releases-do-it-yourself-installation-for-smartphone-integrations-on-several-existing-models
But I'm not even sure if it's related.

>>61658362
>Even if it is, shouldn't dd copy it as is?
yea, but encryption is pointless unless it's enforcing a restriction, no? in this case, it's tied to thie specific car, someone elses card won't work, so therefore a copy of their won't either
i saw forum threads talking about it

Nevermind, I have over a thousand now. Took like a week though.

Thanks for replaying.
Then would getting Android Auto worth it instead?
At least for the maps?
>>
>>61658479
i'm not familiar with that, i do use osmand (foss, supports completely offline maps and navigation) on my android phone when needed though
>>
Gonna add a Crucial ssd to my laptop, it comes with Acronis to clone my old drive. Is there any problem with doing this? I've heard transferring an os is a bad idea.
Are there better cloning programs?
>>
>>61658568
I meant to get navigation from the car because I think the car GPS would be better than a phone.
>osmand
Will look into it.
>>
>>61658568
>osmand
I remember when this almost killed me.
Osmand use OSM which is outdated, I used it while I was hiking and ended up stranded for three days because a certain road that was supposed to be there isn't anymore, Apple's maps and Google's both had that little "update" included.
>>
>>61659028
they're not perfect maps, but they do the job for me
certainly much better than the 2009 maps in my friend's car

mobile data is expensive as fuck, so being able to have all the maps on my phone, completely usable offline (directions and all) is a must for me

not to mention it will keep working with no cell signal

on windows 10 here, cant think of anything unusual i have done lately, but somehow my taskbar thumbnail threshold got set to one, ive already fixed the issue, but i was wondering if anyone knows how it could have gotten set to one in the first place

>all the maps on my phone, completely usable offline (directions and all)
Google maps has been able to do that for like 2 years now.
>>
>>61659479
i can download multiple countries as small vector map files with that as well now?
even so, i'd rather not install gapps/proprietary software when there's a foss solution that works for me already
>>
>>61646961
The phone is decrypted at startup. You enter a password and the phone is no longer encrypted. It will not affect stuff on the lock screen since it does not encrypt/decrypt every time you lock.

>>61659445
same happened to me a last week, it happened after changing from a HiDPI resolution to a non-HiDPI.

Windows 10 is full of mysteries.
