If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Building my first computer.

Anything wrong with this setup?
>>
My 20+ hour struggle continues, I plugged in the power switch and reset switch wrong and I think I connected my HDD and optical drive wrong, I'm just going to take a break from this for a few days
>>

disassemble all the part and start with simplest one,
- connect psu to the power, turn it on does your psu fan spun?
- add psu to motherboard and cpu without ram, it should beep
- add ram and gpu, connect the monitor, try to go to bios
- finally add your hdd

Went to turn on my PC last night and it made a big pop sound and a flash and then went quiet. Smelled like burning too.
After that it was conpletely dead, press the on button and nothing.
I opened it up and looked for any signs of a problem but didnt see anything. I looked at the mobo for a while and didn't see any signs of a short or burnout. So... power supply?
Not sure how to test it.
>>
>>61641226
>recommends iGPU graphics
>only one CPU with iPGU in the list
Why? Also the R3 isn't really a much better value than the Pentium, is it?
>>
>>61641477
Better get a spare PSU to test it with. Sounds like exploding PSU to me.
>>
>>61641512
2 vs 4 cores matter
>>
>>61641512
R3 1200 when OCed beats the Bentium. Ditto for A12-9800 which has a better iGPU and can also be OCed.
>>
>>61641544
Sure but it's almost twice the price right now and you need to spend money for a gpu (which unless you are a total poorfag you would do anyway9 but leaving the Pentium out makes no sense in this context.

>>61641552
But would a poorfag build really include an A350 chipset?
>>
R8 and please don't h8

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/j78Wqk

I'm getting it prebuilt on another site for peace of mind/included warranty, but as a result I have to pick certain stuff like Corsair RAM because they have deals with suppliers

Do I need to upgrade to splash out for liquid cooling or anything?

It will be used for a wide range of game genres. MMOs, FPS, RTS
>>
>>61641572
>But would a poorfag build really include an A350 chipset?
There is barely any price difference between the two. Maybe $5 or something.

I've been driving myself insane with my obtuse need to fit a computer into a hole for /aesthetics/ and I find the case with the perfect size and features. (Antec ISK 600M) But oh wait it hasn't been made in years and can only be bought used for like $200.

Anyone else have some suggestions for this one?
Dimensions: 13in Width x 13in Height x 15in Depth.
mATX. Preferably with some sort of disk drive space and I/O connections on the front. My alternate option is the Corsair Air 240, but it's lack of disk drive pisses me the fuck off.
>>
>>61641477
Look at your connector diagram and bend a paper clip and complete the circuit in two pins to make the PSU think it's on. If you hear the fan whim, then it's probably fine.

Or you can just get a power supply tester.

Sub 500 € light-gaming build for the Krauts

Not going to buy it, just was curious what is possible with the R3 and what not in terms of money.

General thouhgts of this build:

>Use 2 x 4 GB of RAM to profit from dual-channel over 1 x 8 GB which would have been way cheaper
>Only 120 GB SSD to avoid spending too much money on storage
>Focus on a good PSU to avoid losing the hardware quickly, but renounce a modular PSU. Non-modular will do in this price range

Since it's still almost 30 € below 500, you can still either put a bigger SSD, or get the 1050 TI

Thoughts? What would you have done different?

It's an i7 6800k so that's an unlocked one right? I don't think they come with a stock sink, and I assumed it did until yesterday, and I think he does as well. No. DVI is pretty much dead at this point and it's only included in cards for legacy reasons.

You could buy DP to DVI adapters, but those aren't cheap either.

>>
>>61642795
Lower timings are in general better, if not significantly so. What's special about 14-14-14-34 is that it's Samsung B-die, which gets along better with Ryzen. You're more likely to be able to run it at full speed compared with lower quality ram. A set of Hynix or lower quality Samsung may say 3200mhz, but have trouble actually running at that speed. At least that's how it is for regular Ryzen. BIOS updates since launch have been improving the RAM situation, so Threadripper could fare better.
>>
>>61643534
my ram was unstable at 2133 and sometimes the pc wouldn't boot at all

1050ti oc and rx 470 4gb are almost equal in price where i live, I'm going to pair it with ryzen 1600 for video editing and gaming, which one will be a better choice
>>
>>61643606
Get faster RAM. If you want to save money, you may want to consider just using the stock cooler. Wraith Spire is quite acceptable even for decent overclock.
>>
>>61643699
The 470 is almost as fast as the 1060 3GB, and significantly faster than the 1050 ti. So unless you have an actual reason to prefer Nvidia, it's the better choice.

Why the fuck nobody wants to increase the production to make up with the demand?
>>
>>61646619

after the mining dies down all the cards will be sold to gamers, the supply and demand will return to as if this whole thing never happened

dont expect any cheap gpus when this dies down either
>>

>>61646647

lets say there are 500 gamers who want 1070s, they only produced 500 gpus to meet this demand

and then 10 of crypto assholes buy 50 cards each and the gamers have none

after the cryptokings sell their cards, there are 500 cards and 500 gamers want them
the supply and demand is the same as before, because the production didnt boom the price of gpus will be the same for the gamers as if this never happened
>>
>>61646655
depends on resolution and graphics. if at higher resolution/graphic settings the 1060 might find itself running out of VRAM (i remember a few games where the 1050Ti was better because of the 4GB VRAM) but if you're keeping it truly humble (e.g. 1080p@60hz medium settings) then 1060 3GB is fine.

>>
>>61647094
Great, I was wondering why nobody had cpu coolers. What about motherboards, beyond compatibility what should I be looking into specs wise?

Yes I know. I didn't really want to drag it out this long but what it comes to in my mind is that the G4560 should simply be included in the current OP until the R3 drops in price.

My AMD version would be Ryzen 7 1700 and MSI x370 mobo.

I was actually thinking of getting a 1TB NVMe. This would be my first time with liquid cooling but it seems to be a must have nowadays for overclocking
>>
>>61647227
If you are only playing games a NVMe SSD is not the best idea since they dont really benefit a lot from them, SATA SSDs are fast enough.

Don't bother.

Ryzen 7 for most cases as it is better rounded and has a better upgrade path currently. Or wait for Coffee Lake and see how that goes.

If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well.

So I got given an old Dell OptiPlex which I'm in the process of adding a gpu to.

What do you guys reckon? (Yes I know the PSU is torture)

CPU: i5-4570k
Mobo: MIH81R Tigris
PSU: 290w Chinese shit
GPU: MSI 1050ti X 4GB
RAM: 8GB old DDR3, Dell provided
DVDrw
Storage: Toshiba 1tb 7200rpm (don't laugh)
Cooling: Dell stock fan (think it's 80-82cm and 1 case fan (similar size)

Will I blow up the PSU or motherboard with this setup?

PCPartPicker has me at 258w, but that's with substituted ram a different psu model and different case and cpu fan as I don't have the model/make and I'm not pulling them out to check.
>>
>>61647330
haha
>>
>>61647410
Pretty sure you won't blow it up with a 1050ti, make sure it's a 75w one without addidtional power cables. People put 8800gtx ovens in their 320w dells years ago without problem.

>Will I blow up the PSU
Yep.

>or motherboard
Nope.

Don't be a retard, just buy any 400W+ PSU made by EVGA, Seasonic or Silverstone that has an 80 Plus rating and you'll be golden. It will cost you like $60 tops.

Case cooling isn't a problem, 1050Ti uses very little power, people can and do run silly GPU setups in prebuilt PC cases just for kicks and it's not a problem.
>>
>>61647449
>>61647410
aftermarket PSUs have a 60% chance of not fitting onto a proprietary mainboard.
Also 290w is enough, they currently sell a 240w optiplex with an i7 and a RX350X.
The spec sheet for the Optiplex 9020 which I assume this is says it supports discrete graphics from Nvidia and AMD so just do it.
>>
>>61647449
Dell has a stupid proprietary connector. If I buy a new psu it ain't gonna fit.

You think it'll blow even though my power consumption is 30w below it's output?

>>61647446
It seems that even the 75w model has the extra cable, but the techpowerup teardown I saw basically said it was pointless because the card never went over 75w
>>
>>61647564
It's even older, it's an OptiPlex 3020. Model is from 2014...
>>
>>61647055
TDP measures how good cooling you need. It's approximately the same as power consumption, except not really.

There pretty much isn't any way to calculate the power consumption yourself, the best you can do is look at the PSU requirements. Reviews may or may not look at the power consumption, Anandtech and Tom's hardware usually have pretty good figures I believe(even if their reviews are otherwise kind of questionable sometimes).
>>
>>61647100
Generally getting the GPU with base amount of VRAM is a good idea, but 1060 3GB is an exception as unlike most cards, it DOESN'T really have sufficient VRAM for it's performance profile.
>>
>>61647564
>>61647569
Hmm, didn't know Dell stuff was using proprietary stuff, thats shitty. I've put silly powerful aftermarket GPU's in prebuilts before and not encountered any issues, but I've never built in a Dell.

I assume there's no adapter you can use?

>>61647569
>You think it'll blow even though my power consumption is 30w below it's output?
It's not the wattage that is a concern, a manufacturer can write whatever wattage they want on a PSU because technically it can do that. It's the amount of rails and amps that you want to know.

Some manufacturers use dogshit PSU's to save money, others don't (e.g. server grade systems), I don't know about Dell. You'll have to look up what PSU your system is using and find out if it's shit or not.

If you can somehow run an adapter from whatever stupid proprietary connector Dell is using to a standard ATX PSU definitely go that route. $60 spent on a PSU beats dying in your sleep because your computer caught fire.
>>
>>61646736
If srs, how so?
>>
>>61647569
most versions I've seen don't have the connector. I've had a superclocked EVGA one that came without it. PNY makes one that has it, as do others, I'm sure. But that's an easy check before you but it.

>>61647588
doesn't matter it seems, same PSU

>>61647633
I can't say for sure it's not a standard ATX mobo but I've have 3 dells, 2 of which were BTX (and awesome as fuck, built like a tank, completeley toolless etc...) and one that was supposedly atx (never looked inside) and a HP that had a non standard ATX board.
The tip with the amps is good. Google pics tells me the two 12v rails have 14 and 16 amps.
>>
>>61647133
4 ram slots, which yours has. your mobo only has 4 sata slots, which is used for dvd drives, hard drives, and SSD's. if you plan to use more than 4 of those, then you would need to get a pci to sata card. you'll probably be fine.
>>
>>61647683
>>61647633
Through the fan casing, I can just about see it says 12v 0.19amps

So I assume 12volts and 19milliamps?

There doesn't seem to be any review of the unit online, but I found a version on Amazon.

Pretty good, but cue the onslaught of people who'll tell you to go Ryzen instead.

Since you've got a 1060 and will likely be GPU limited anyway, I'd probably agree with them in this case. You might also try and budget for 16GB of RAM, a lot of games use more than 8GB these days.

Let me guess, you've never built a high end system before and want it to be silent? You're going to be pretty upset when that PSU fan is making a shit tonne of noise and you get endless water pump whine.
