If you want help:
>Assemble parts list

How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for select gaming scenarios (ask if unsure)
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
>>
Is it true that you should get an overpowered PSU for reliability and silent running or is it a meme to go more than 100w over your max usage?
>>
>>61648300

Kek

Is this seriously a video Gigabyte released
>>
>>61648592
Not a meme.

If you get a 1000W+ PSU to run a 400Wish system it'll remain passive all the time. Pretty pointlessly expensive to do it though unless you have autism and really care about noise. For most PSU's the fan noise isn't that much, but if the rest of your system is super quiet it could easily be the loudest component.
>>
looking for a new HDD. is there any reason not to get a WD Blue? is there anything better in the same price range?
>>
>>61648684
Hitachi has great HDDs for cheap, with amazing reliability. They're pretty underrated.
>>
>>61648257
I don't know how i missed that HDD, thanks
Is this better?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dTnTkT
>>
>>61648708
Not bad, people will no doubt rip on you for not going Ryzen though. Check some benchmarks for whatever games you intend to play and decide for yourself. If you're doing any productivity work Ryzen will piss and shit all over a 7700K.

Also a 1080Ti is roughly another 10% total system expenditure and will net another 30% gaming performance, something to think about.
>>
>>61648300
is 4k gaming possible now? considering building a new rig.
are there any graphics cards that can run TF2 on max, 4k, and 120fps?
>>
>>61648820
>is 4k gaming possible now?
1080Ti does 4K ultra 60FPS in its sleep.

>are there any graphics cards that can run TF2 on max, 4k, and 120fps?
Yeah the 7970 came out in 2012 if memory serves me correct.
>>
>>61648855
What about the newest games on max, 120fps? like the new hitman?
>>
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/TpKPBP

About to pull the trigger on my first gaming build.

Anything here look out of place? Already a little over budget. (Australia)
>>
>>61648878
the ssd is too small, 500gb is what i consider minimum for OS. it fills up fast!
pretty sure you're paying too much for that HDD, dunno about aussie prices though.
monitor is too small(atleast for me), consider 23" or 27"
pretty sure you're gonna have problems with that small PSU.
>>
>>61648877
I doubt it. I've got a 1080Ti and Hitman and it sits at 100% GPU usage at 1440p on max at somewhere north of 60FPS. If you're wanting 120FPS in everything you'll have to wait until better CPU's exist, and given the number of single threaded games out there you'll be waiting a very, very long time.
>>
>>61648878
>>61648922
Pretty much what he said. A lot of games are 50GB or more these days, by the time you've got your OS installed and account for the amount of dead space on an SSD that's like three games.
>>
>>61648765
how about this for a ryzen build?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/JckcD8
would be using the stock cooler because i don't want to wait a month for the manufacturer to send out an AM4 plate.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GgbtD8
How's my build? Budget of $4k, meant for gaming 1440p 165Hz on AAA games. Are any parts just meme and useless, or any bottlenecks?
>>
>>61648926
was considering 1440p but i feel like might aswell just jump on 4k and save myself the trouble of upgrading my monitors again. my current ones are over 6years old.
what about sli? wasn't it directx12 that would allow you to run multiple cards and get linear performance gain?
>>
>>61648877
I'm waiting for whatever takes the 1080 Ti's place in the next progression. I'm looking for a similar jump from my 980 Ti as I experienced when moving from my 770 SC. Though I wouldn't mind a similar jump as the one from the 5770 to the 770.
>>
>>61648974
you don't need to buy separate thermal paste, the cpu cooler comes with some on it.
i'd consider a 850w psu or higher

>>61648978
Yeah I'd definitely recommend 4K for a 1080Ti, at 1440p I'm finding it to be kind of underutilized in a lot of games. Not like it's a bad thing, but it kind of means you're throwing money down the drain on an unnecessary GPU.

SLI is pretty much dead at this point and there's no evidence to suggest that it'll make a comeback any time soon, see pic related. Nvidia has killed support for anything above 2-way SLI for anything other than benchmark usage, and even 2-way SLI is very limited in it's support recently.

The 'problem' of not hitting 120FPS in a lot of games is primarily going to be a CPU bottleneck issue in most games anyway unless you're running a retardedly high resolution, SLI isn't going to help.

Honestly though my monitor is 110Hz and so long as FPS is above 60 I don't really care. In my opinion super high FPS is only important in first person shooters.

>free-sync or g-sync?
Neither, I don't use vsync in any games. Tearing isn't really a problem on a 110Hz display, and it sure as shit isn't a problem at 144Hz and above. I've not used Freesync or Gsync but I can't really see them being worth it unless it's a 60Hz panel.

Your mileage may vary, some people are very sensitive to stuff like frame tearing. It doesn't bother me unless I actively look for it.

Depends what you're buying. If you want a top-tier GPU it isn't looking like Nvidia's next gen is going to be anything special, so you're pretty safe in buying a 1080 or 1080Ti. If you want to save some cash on a GPU it would probably make sense to wait a few months for mid-range stuff to come down 25% or so, but the savings are kind of meagre in my opinion.

I personally wouldn't buy a CPU at all in the current climate, I'd wait til early next year unless you're desperate. Were on the cusp of a Sandy Bridge tier jump, Intel is finally dropping 4 cores as their mainstream mid-tier offering.
>>
>>61650601
Ryzen is not a good option?
>>
>>61650652
It's breddy gudd but a 6 core 12 thread i7 will piss all over it. By the time that comes out Zen 2 or whatever the fuck AMD are calling their Ryzen refresh will be out and hopefull have some tasty IPC improvements.

>Better how
Better thermals/noise. There are a few sites that have tested all three, I think TechPowerUp is one of them, the Aorus and Strix are the best. Unfortunetly I don't think there's been a roundup test yet like TomsHardware used to do where they normalise the temperatures and see how much noise a GPU needs to stay at that temperature, but the Aorus and Strix almost always come out on top in the reviews I've seen.

Honestly though I doubt there's much difference between them. I've got the Aorus Extreme card, I undervolted it as much as I could get it while staying at 2000MHz, repasted with NHT1 and set up a fan profile to run as close to 90C as possible. It's barely audible above my 600RPM case fans, even if a different card is 20-30% louder it isn't going to be a whole lot of difference.

Does it make sense to focus on power supply / case for my first build? I'd like to get liquid cooling + a high end power supply first off (along with good thermal paste), so I don't end up damaging the expensive parts I buy later.

How would I go about allocating, say, a $500-600 budget to a PC that is SAFE and that I can buy an expensive GPU / CPU / fast RAM / phat SSD for later. Basically I want to avoid overheating / damaging the parts at all costs

I was thinking:
>Liquid cooling kit + case
>1000W psu
>1TB HDD (I don't mind managing the memory for a bit with usb stix)
>8GB ram

and then that's about as far as I've thought it through
>>
>>61652681
Liquid cooling is a meme and so is overheating. Off the shelf AIO's are shit because they have a (very small) chance of leaking and they make pump droning noises which air coolers don't. Unless you're a retard and try to put a Crossfire Vega setup in a passive case, and you happen to live in Brazil or somewhere else where it's hot as shit, components don't overheat. It's not the era of Fermi anymore and modern parts run plenty cool under normal circumstances. There's also absolutely no reason to buy a 1000W PSU for a single card setup (which is what you should be going for) unless you are massively obsessive about fan noise.

Just post a pcpartpicker list of what you're thinking of getting. No one can really say what to get, but if you're saying you want a 1000W PSU and 8GB of RAM you are either quite clueless or baiting.
>>
So, is it worth buying windows 7 or is there a way to download that fucking shit, im not paying greedy jews 80 dollars for something i have in my old laptop.
>>
does anyone know how the vega bundles will work exactly? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_3-GDOWFXg this guys says you have to use your discounts all at the same time. Def clueless, very glad this thread exists

and yeah i'm brazilian LMAO that's why i'm worried

anyway why is 8gb of ram bad? I've had some people recommend like 16 gb which seemed like hella overkill so I figured I'd go with like 8

why, do i only need like 4?

also I assume a 500 psu would be fine hten
>>
>>61652838
8 is the bare minimum these days with bloated shitware and games using ever higher fidelity graphics. Hell, even 16 isn't enough for at least a couple of games that I have.
>>
>>61652838
the opposite .. you need 16 gb and a less powerfull PSU
>>
>>61652838
Like other anons said, 8GB isn't really enough for gaymen these days, assuming you're gaymen. 500W PSU would be fine if we knew what sort of specs you were going for, more important is picking a quality manufacturer like Seasonic, Silverstone, EVGA and maybe Corsair.

You can't really blame people for giving that advice back in the day, no one could have expected the Sandy Bridge platform to last 6 years+ like it has. Back then an i7 made absolutely zero difference in gaymen, and neither did RAM over 8GB. The truth is even now there aren't many games where an i7 and 16GB makes much difference, and if it is, you sure as shit aren't using a 2011 GPU in that system.

Hmmmmm, gotta be honest lads I don't really need a good build, any gaming rig will probably feel like heaven to me, i'm typing this on a 2007 laptop, i currently play vidya at like 720p on low settings to get like ~55 fps andt some rpgs like new vegas at ~20fps which is aight cuz they're single player

this build is more just to get me a solid foundation of things that I can expand on later, and atm I don't have any games that really require more than 8gb of ram (except maybe modded STALKER with a-life shenanigans and dorf with worldgen modding)

i'm sort of a more old school gamer guy anyway

So I think:
>8gb is fine for now, I'll manage avoiding bloatware
>1TB HDD is fine because I can just manage my stuff carefully

>liquid cooling case probably because brazilaylmao, pls don't destroy my parts 3rd world country life
>good motherboard that permits me to expand later, buy more ram
>mid range cpu and gpu, I'd like to be able to run things at 1080p with high textures and maybe some dynamic lighting, all other graphical stuff is just fluff imo
>would be nice to also be streaming capable of 720p / decent video and audio quality with a cam for me and my brodies

will i have to re install drivers or lose anything if i switch windows to an ssd from a hdd?

its a fairly new build with not much on the hard drive, so i could easily backup any important files. im not concerned with losing them. the inconvenience of redoing drivers, even if it take minutes, is annoying enough for me to want to know how to avoid it. ive got one of those win10 flashdrives that can take the os off the boot device and then be used again. pic not related, but i might pull the trigger on buying the sdd in like a month.

Always do a clean installation if you are moving your OS between drives.

The Corsair AX860 is really good, but also really expensive
A cheaper Seasonic or Super Flower unit would do just fine
The boxed cooler of the 1700 should be fine, but you can always get a fancier cooler
bequiet Dark Rock 3 is a nice one and its really silent even at 100% fan speed
And get at least a 2TB HDD

Zen 2 is going to be Athlon all over again or AMD's version of Sandy Bridge, the CPU generation that keeps on keeping on when overclocked.
Zen 2 will allow to overclock up to 5GHz. AMD's borrowing some IBM tech in 7nm.

I'm opening my own startup, or at least I'm preparing for it. Basically I'm forking OpenVZ to offer a certain kind of platform to run applications. So I need a machine for nested virtualization (Running my OpenVZ fork in a VM and running containers in that)

I live in Switzerland, but Swiss sites are really expensive and I'm poor, so I was looking around mostly on German websites (Alternate, Mindfactory etc) to build a computer for good virtualization but I end up always almost-spending a lot of cash.

Now I found that there are several websites who offer s second hand high-end workstations from both Dell and Lenovo. Is there any con in getting such a used workstation?

Like this, I would never manage to get such specs for a similar price when building new:

https://www.itsco.de/workstation-dell-precision-t5610-2x-intel-eight-core-xeon-e5-2650-v2-8x-2-6ghz.html

What would you do on a, let's say 3k budget for nested virtualization? Build your own? Wait for Thread Ripper and build your own? Get a used work station? Kill myself?

It would run: 4 connected VMs, running a total of maybe 8 VMs, host system Gentoo, first level guests OpenVZ/CentOS and third level guests are also mostly CentOS + 1 IDE (IntelliJ) and it should be able to compile Go code at an acceptable speed while running those.

Here's a wierd situation /pcbg/.
So, i finished setting all my overclocks and all was good and i went for a quick cpu-z
and cinebench benchmarks only to find out that my scores suck ass.
So i spend a couple of hours troubleshooting and i opened task manager(i'm using windows 10)
and i threw another cpu-z bench to see my cpu usage and suddenly i get amazing scores.
That's when i realise that for whatever reason whenever i open task manager my cpu performs much better.
I tested this on heaven benchmark too and also in games and i'm getting much better fps when having
task manager running.

What the fuck /pcbg/ i googled this and i seem to be literally the only person experiencing this.

I bought 2x4GB kit of 2666MHz memory. If I overclock it to 3000 (if possible), and then later add another of the same branded kit and overclock it to 3000 too, will that work?
I remember seeing some shit about Ryzen only liking 2x# kits, but have I locked myself into having to sell the 2x4 for a 2x8 kit later if I want 16GB?
The motherboard I got supports some 4x4 & 4x8 kits, but if they're listed at 4x, would that mean a specifically 4x4 kit, or would it mean (2x)2x4?
When the parts ship, I'll contact Ayysus to see if it's possible, but for now I'm just left with questions.

As someone on an Athlon 860K overclocked to 4.6GHz at 1.4v, it dropped 100% load temps down from about 86 on the stock stuff, to about 73 with Cooler Master Master Gel Pro. Realistic load was about 68 on stock, and 61 on the same CM stuff.
Since I got it for $6, I'd personally have to say it can be decent.

>>
>>61657722
Basically, unless you're some counterstrike fag, a 60hz IPS monitor of your budget-fulfilling resolution and screen size is the best you're going to want. Within IPS monitors there's a few distinctions, as well as among the kinds of LEDs in the screen, but if you're looking into that stuff then you don't REALLY have just a $150 budget.

I hate CounterStrike. I am, however, a person who plays video games. So... yeah. Like I said, monitor that died is more than 10 years old. So anything I buy will probably be better. Just looking to get the most bang as quickly as possible. I have heard those Dells have an issue where they die 6 months in, though. So I'm hesitant as hell. I wish electronics were made to some quality standard these days.
>>
>>61657847
Well my oldest Asus is a little over 4 years old and the only problems I've had were related to a bad HDMI cable and some shitty video card drivers, so they've got my endorsement. Just buy from a place with a good return policy or a warranty if you're super nervous.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236305
>>
>>61658121
Is that one I linked right in this post lacking the IPS display? Hmm. That would explain it. And that's probably one of the more desirable features for me personally given how I always had a big fucking issue with vertical viewing angle when sitting back to watch movies or when setting the fucker up in general.

The gold color of the bezel is a thing easily fixed with some electrical tape. So that isn't an issue.
>>
>>61658400
Yeah. Oddly they're both the same price when not on sale. Personally, I use the MX239H and MX259H, but they're a little over your budget.
>>
>>61658437
>Oddly they're both the same price when not on sale.
Well, the one I linked has a 1ms refresh instead of a 5ms refresh. And while it's arguably trivial as hell (and logically lowers the lifespan of the monitor), gamers (not game-playing individuals, but morons) will pay $50 more just for that minor advantage.
>>
>>61658478
Also, according to this Asian dude on Youtube, anything beyond 5ms response on a standard refresh rate monitor is totally, absolutely, immeasurably pointless. Only matters for 144hz.
