If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - 144hz only
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
Buying used is perfectly fine for budgets (PSU excluded)

>>
*sigh* I just killed my 1TB Caviar Black. I was setting up a computer to sell, noticed the cage was buzzing and the seeks were loud as hell, and decided to try moving it to one of the optical bays to get it horizontal and in a different cage. The holes didn't line up so I decided to just cram it in the floppy bay.

BEEP BEEP BEEP

From the clicking noises it's making, it be dead.
Sucks because I actually swapped that one out of my main rig for an 82 bad sector Seagate because the Black was faster and clean.

Now I have THREE more computers than I do hard drives.

If you put all that money into buying ETH instead, you would have made way way way more dosh.

I've found a dual bulldozer server (2× opteron 16 core, 64GB DDR3-1333) for 410 dollars. No discrete gpu, but it has an integrated one and has PCI-E 16x 2.0 slots. Is it worth the money to upgrade my desktop PC (currently old phenom II)?

Well maybe, but investing and mining are strategically different. Had I just bought ETH it's very likely I would have sold before its current price. Not to mention that I did exactly that with more than the cost of those gpus anyway and with more than just ETH
>>
>>61287297
You would have made more.
Have more liquid cash.
Now you are making profit sure but your investment is still sitting in the form of GPUs vs the guy who can easily move his money into the newest commodity.
The best way to make money for crypto is to treat it like stocks rather than goods.
>>
>>61287327
Mining is about passive income with minimal risk not about managing commodities... I have plenty of liquidity available elsewhere so that is of no concern. But this is totally off topic now.

DDR2 is referring to the system memory, not the vram on your gpu.

Either of those cards will work with your system assuming it has a PCIe x16 lane on it.

So...

This is my build.

I want a new graphics card in the $200-250 range.

The problem is...

My monitors are on DVI-D (Philips 243V) and VGA (Philips 150S4, I have a DVI-I converter).

Is there any way I could get a reasonably modern graphics card without having to buy new monitors? What card would that be?

I've scoured all the 1060's and 1050 ti's, and none of them seem to have two DVI's (and one MUST support analog signal).
>>
>>61287623
GPU memory is totally unrelated to system RAM, and anyway GPU memory isn't 'ddr5' it's GDDR5.

A core 2 duo is kind of shitty though and might just bottleneck anyway, what resolution are you playing at?

How are used 970 prices? They were going for like $125-$150. They aren't a very good mining card so I would think they wouldn't have been hit very hard.

Worst case, just get like a 6770, GTX 960, or some shit like that.

Mostly play at 1280x1024 while fiddling with antialiasing and lower-end quality.
I'm thinking about ricing it up though by putting an Core 2 Quad Q9650 inside.
The next step would be the extreme series but I think instead of buying it I would be better off getting a new mobo which could get 8+ cores. Not willing to do that yet.
And modding to put a xeon inside it seems to much of gamble to me.

It's massive overkill at that resolution, you'll 100% be CPU limited. Even at 1080p a 1050Ti should max pretty much everything at 60FPS-ish.

I'd usually say to change the CPU first, but since right now is about the worst time to buy a CPU since 2010, just buy the 1050Ti now if you feel you need it, then change the CPU at the end of the year/the start of next year. Besides, it's not like you can have 'too much' GPU power.

RAM does not correlate with performance, look at benchmarks to get an actual idea of performance.

Car analogies are usually shit but in this case I feel it might help you understand. It's like judging the performance of a car based on the size of the tyres. Sure, lower end card usually have smaller tyres and performance card usually have larger tyres but it most certainly shouldn't be what you're basing your decision on.
>>
>>61287645
Bump. Been scouring Amazon for the last half-hour, can't seem to find any graphics card in the 10xx series which would still have VGA/ DVI-I connectors.

What. The. Fuck.
>>
>>61287957
>VGA/ DVI-I
No way in hell you'll find any modern, powerful card with a VGA out, not sure about DVI-I. Some manufacturers have even dropped DVI altogether and just do Display Port and HDMI now. Shit for people like me who have a Korean monitor that only accepts DVI-D and nothing else.
>>

>>

Fuck.

So getting a new monitor with this is pretty much a must.

Is there a list of /g/ approved budget gaming monitors?
>>

Most new cryptos have asic proof algos. Can't mine ether with it which is probably what he's doing.
>>
>>61288007
Yeah, VGA out hasn't been a thing since like AMD's 7000 series, they just included a VGA adapter in the box. Looks like on the 10xx series they've gone with just all digital outputs.

I guess you could use active converters, but I don't know how well that would work.

>>

Used business laptop (sans MBP, those might be more than 500 dollars due to the jew hipsters). Dell, HP, and Lenovo have several good laptops in multiple size ranges that you can now find for much less than 500 dollars.

If you don't mind sandy/ivybridge era hardware, you can find those for about 100-200 dollars. Get one that looks in mint condition if you care about that kind of stuff. Replacement parts can be more expensive than the laptop is worth.

Respectfully disagree. Load times in games that take a week to load like Skyrim and GTA5 are much improved with an SSD, and with an SSD you'll usually be first to load in on multiplayer games.

Means in games like Rising Storm 2 you can get whatever class you like, every time :^)

SSD's are noticable faster than a 7200 rpm HDD (fastest consumer HDD) for loading

if you dont care about long term data retention(you can recover games in steam for instance)

id suggest the SSD

if you use raid 0 or a zmirror your I/O is multiplexed

the down side is that HDD are mechanically limited by the arm

you can also raid 0 / zmirror SSD which doesnt have the delay of a mechanic arm and you will notice the full effect of raid 0 / zmirrors

imagine if you had 20 SSD's in a raid 0 / zmirror configuration lol

also dont use hardware raid controllers

>>
>>61290668
They are pretty good thse days actually. Modern day components don't draw that much power and emit that much heat and are really compact. Sure you have Intel's stutterlake-x efforts but a midrange setup with a R5 1600 and a 1060 6gb is really no problem anymore. They make anything up to the GTX 1070 in mini forms for mITX builds and they are barely slower. I startet my 10 liter case build with a Pentium and a 1050ti mini and I feel like I could run this stuff passive.
The new Ryzen mITX boards are gonna drop soon and I'll upgrade to said 1600/10606gb combo I guess. But the Pentium and 1050ti combo is stronger than I expected. Thank god I already bought the 1060.
Why don't you post a build and I can comment/r8/h8?

Looks good to me. A couple o fpoints though:

I need to upgrade /g/. Do I bite the bullet and go for the 1151 chipset? The would require a new mobo, cpu, and ram (all of which are desperately needed at this point). My only other option would be what, a i7 4970k? As far as I'm aware, the 1150s will be phased out for the newer gen, and I may as well make my computer future proof now by upgrading to current/future chipsets. Thoughts?

Hello /g/

I'm planning to build a PC primarily for games, but I also want to do creative stuff like music, video editing, and 3D modeling as a hobby. For games, my goal is to run current 8th gen games at 1440p60. Also, emulation. I'm comfortable with going with Logical Increments' Exceptional tier (GTX 1080, i7 7700K, 8GB RAM) for about $1600. Is that a wise decision, or is that a bit overkill? I'm kinda a wage slave, but I can be frugal to save up cash. I'll probably have the funds to make the build in a few weeks time, but if it's overkill, I wouldn't mind paying less. And of course, this isn't even counting the cost for a new monitor, new KB+M, and other peripherals. For reference, my current machine is a potato by 2009 standards (Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, Radeon 3450. Using a 900p monitor)

Side question: a friend of mine has a machine with 8GB RAM, an i5 (didn't specify which), and integrated graphics. He's not very interested in current 8th gen games, but would prefer to run older 7th gen and below games at 1080p60. I told him to get a GTX 1050 for about $110, but is that actually good advice?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not the biggest computer guy when it comes to hardware, but I am when it comes to software and I'm willing to learn more about computer hardware.

The most I'd go is somewhere in the $1000-$1500 range, ideally lower.

My biggest needs are good audio, low lag display/low enough lag to not severely mess up my inputs, and something that can run Dota at a consistent 60+fps on at least medium settings.

I don't have a build yet, but I want a mix of good price with good quality. Ideally not something too expensive and something that does the previously mentioned.

Also my Acer Aspire E5 won't load Windows, so I'm looking towards building a PC.

Primary focus is for gaming, but I also do a lot of coding, video editing, image editing, ect.

I have a 3570K now and do not have any issues with multi-tasking or using other software so I was thinking I would just go with the i7 over Ryzen.

How is the motherboard? I spent the better part of today researching different boards and settled for the ASUS Maximus IX Hero

The Ryzen 7 1700 is only marginally cheaper than the i7 7700K. How much of a performance difference is it? I know Ryzen is supposed to be better for multithreaded performance than Intel, But isn't it worse for games?

And yeah, I was considering getting 16GB of RAM. Hasn't RAM seen a spike in price over the past year? Why is that? Is it related to the GPU price spikes from cryptocurrency mining?
>>
>>61295266
If you don't do anything but gaming on your PC that's your business. Other people have different needs.

>>61295276
Ryzen 7 all day: faster compiling, faster video encoding, faster image processing, better general use, same game performance as a 7700k but usually with higher minimums and no stuttering.

Unless you need higher single threaded performance (maybe 15% at most) AND you are willing to lose around 50-70% multithreaded performance you should not go with a 7700k. The other niche is if your compiler toolchain is only available for Intel then you're kind of stuck with them.
>>
>>61295437
>>61295402
Who'd you kill anon?
>>
>>61295486
Huge multithreaded performance boost, around 50% on average.

Gaming performance is nearly identical to the 7700k except when you're in CPU bound situations where the 7700k can pull away by 10-15%. One thing almost all the benchmarks and charts fail to mention is that Ryzen and Intel 8-core+ systems have far less stuttering and better minimums in most games even if the averages are slightly lower.

RAM being pricey has no relation to cryptocurrencies, it has to do with overall shortages related to increased demand for DDR4 for phones and embedded devices.

So here's my problem right now, /pcbg/.

I am currently saving up to build a new PC, and I have to rush the process as much as I can due to my laptop slowing down and being unable to do multiple tasks at once.

I am going to be primarily using the laptop for playing LoL, OW, and MAYBE BDO/GTAV. I also want the laptop to be able to emulate PS2/GC at a smooth framerate and to be able to stream.

I am going to have a 1920x1080 144Hz monitor, and I was going to spring for the GTX 1070 before the neckbeard cryptocurrency miners spiked the price of it. Should I still spring for the 1070 or would I be able to do just fine with a less expensive GPU? Let me know if you need more information and I'll provide it. This is my first time building a PC.
>>
>>61295555
Thanks for the info.

So, I went to PC Part Picker, and made two builds. Both primarily based on the exceptional tier on Logical Increments. Primary difference between the two is one's a i7 7700K, and the other is a R7 1700. And I also did slight variations from Logical Increments (5TB HDD instead of 2, added an optical disc drive for shits and giggles, etc).

The price difference is negligible between the two builds. Like, it's only a difference of less than $10. I feel like even though the R7 1700 is cheaper than the i7 7700K, it's actually offset by the price of the motherboard. The Ryzen compatible motherboard is more expensive than the equivalent Intel compatible one.

Anything I can improve on? Any glaring flaws?

>>61297095
One thing to note is that Ryzen is fairly picky about RAM right now so make sure the RAM you chose is on the QVL for the mobo you chose.

The BQ coolers are nice but they are a supreme pain in the ass to install because of the way you screw down the heatsink. I don't know why they use that system but it is what it is. You could look at the TR Le grand macho as an alternative though it doesn't look as nice.

Does anybody have any advice for a computer to be used for daytrading?
My budget is <$1000, preferably with options to upgrade later if needed rather than now.

I have no real regard for gaming performance or anything of the sort, however I need at least 2-3 1080p monitors and about 7 different charts going at once, at least.
So I'd need a good GPU anyways, correct? Would it be good to get one with good memory (4GB+) vs a better, but smaller memory card?

Should I get a R5 1600 or the like, or is multi-threaded worthless for my use and I should get an i7 or the like?

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to a full size case such as the Enthoo pro vs something like the meme-tier Fractal Design Define mini C?
Would it simply be potentially 2 GPU's vs 1GPU?
Would cooling be a concern if I had 2 GPU's?

Any advice would be appreciated, as I'm literally on a 1.2GH/s labtop that even stalls running linux and having just this tab open. I need out of this madness and start making up these lost-opportunities when my computer lags during a trade.

Don't need a good GPU, you just need a GPU with enough outputs. A strong CPU and a lot of RAM since you are going to have multiple programs open and multiple tabs in your browser.

Do need to be concerned about casing unless fan noise distracts you while you are trading.

Okay, any idea if single threaded would be better to prioritize?
Sounds like I should bump up to an i7 if so.

Looks like I'll need 2 GPU's most likely then, but I can get some sub-par ones I suppose.
I'll definitely need a full-size case then, right? Fan noise doesn't bother me.

>>61297982
They problem is without at least a couple you won't be able to look at more than one or two markets/stocks/trades/commodities/etc.
If one crashes or begins to drop you can set your screen or the window to flash red if you want.

If you can only see 2 charts, but are trading 7, or even 4 or 5, if one drops or something happens, you won't see it as clearly.
On top of that it'd be annoying going back and forth dozens of time in a day, if not hundreds.

If you day-trade cryptos or FOREX/currencies a lot are open 24/5 (or 24/7) which means you may prefer to have a screen to transfer funds or do something else while still being able to see the market, trends, if something drops, etc.
>>
>>61298076

>Looks like I'll need 2 GPU's most likely then, but I can get some sub-par ones I suppose.
You only need them for output display. It is not like you are running anything GPU intensity. Again you should know your programs better than we do.

>I'll definitely need a full-size case then, right? Fan noise doesn't bother me.
No. You need a ATX mobo over another mobos. Full tower or mid tower is your choice.

I mean, I don't mind going over budget. It really just means waiting maybe an additional paycheck or two before I can purchase my parts. But also don't mind saving a hundred dollars or so.

Updated build with mid-tower case:

Also dumb question. Is it necessary to get a separate network card, or should the mobo just be able to handle ethernet? Same for a sound card, is it necessary to get a separate sound card, or should the mobo just handle sound? Sorry for showing how much of a novice I am.

>Is it necessary to get a separate network card, or should the mobo just be able to handle ethernet?
Mobo ethernet should be good enough

>Same for a sound card, is it necessary to get a separate sound card, or should the mobo just handle sound?
Preference. Modern mobo sound should be good enough but if you do audio production or are some audiophile then you might want to get a sound card.

Samefag here.

Dunno what happened, but I guess the prices listed on PC part picker changed or something. Both of the mid-tower builds and both of the full-tower builds are now showing about $400 cheaper than a few minutes ago. Dunno what happened, cause I didn't change anything else. So yeah, I guess now I'm under budget!

>>61298383
Thanks. I plan on doing some hobbyist audio production, so it might be a good idea for me to add a sound card.
>>
>>61298422
Easy cause your 1080 has no price. Did you notice that?
>>
>>61298456
Didn't catch that! Good eyes there, anon. When I initially added it, it had a price.
>>
>>61298474
I hope you know the card you added has a blower design and what that entails.

Another major issue is screen-size.
You can use one or two if you have a hyuge 4k monitor, but if you have 1600x900 or 1920x1080 you simply cannot fit enough.
You can fit enough on a 4k monitor if you want, but it's cheaper to use cheaper monitors, plus they usually have worse refresh rates, which is good for your eyes.

On top of this all, ideally you want 1-2 chatrooms open or a news site or two, and maybe even a youtube video or something for entertainment.
Markets move slow (aside from crypto), but when you're leveraging $5000 into potentially $250,000 and looking for a 0.5% gain, it matters to know everything.

Thanks m8, I'll put it together on pcpartpicker after looking into the thread preferences.

What's a good air cooler for a Cooler Master K350 atx case? I'm using the i5 7400 stock one but i haven't played any games yet. It's a new rig.
>>
>>61298485
Noise, right? I'll change it.
>>
Does anyone here overclock on the gigabyte gaming 3, turns out this shitty board only has a voltage offset instead of manual.

Or does anyone know the stock voltage of the R5 1600?

Can't go wrong with a H7

What are some PC building memes everybody should avoid?

AIO when you don't need them
Buying reference cards cause they are cheaper
1 stick of RAM
The wait meme

Mid-tower builds:

Full-tower builds:

Anything else I should modify? The mid-tower builds are only slightly over budget, so I'll probably get a mid-tower ultimately. Haven't decided on a sound card, so I might end up just skipping it.

Just decide between a Ryzen or 7700k why do you have both?

I made a Ryzen build and an Intel build mainly to compare performance and price. Ryzen is supposedly a better value for the money, but the mobo is more expensive than the Intel compatible mobo. I'm leaning more towards the Intel build, to be honest, despite it being slightly more expensive overall.
>>
>>61298950
Only get the intel one if all you do is game at 144hz otherwise the Ryzen one is more flexible.
>>
>>61298950
are you sure you need/want an X370?
any reason for you to avoid the B350?
>>

Searched all over and can't find it in my country
>>
>>61298950
7700k has a slim use case, Ryzen is just a better value overall.

I'll avoid these. Thank you, Anon.

24" or 27" for 1440p 144hz monitors? Smaller one has G-Sync for my 1080 Ti if that matters. Usage is mostly video games and I'm moving up from a 20" or so 720p monitor so I expect to not be comfortable at first with either.
>>
>>61298960
>>61298977
Ideally, I'll be playing games at 1440p60. And, I'm interested in hobbyist video editing, audio production, 3D modeling, etc. The Ryzen would better serve me?

>>61298971
I was using Logical Increments' Exceptional and Enthusiast tiers as a frame of reference. Beyond that, not really.
>>
>>61299000
27inch 1440p144hz with Gsync is the best.
Otherwise go for the one with Gsync if 144hz is important to you.
>>
>>61299031
>>61299031
>>
>>61299006
Yes Ryzen is better suited for you. The main use for a 7700K is for 1080p gaming at over 120Hz or something else that prioritizes single thread performance. Everything you listed there would benefit strongly from multiple cores aside from gaming which at 1440p will depend on your GPU more than CPU anyway.
>>
>>61299219
Okay, thanks.
I also wanna run emulators. I figure the 7700K is better for that, but the Ryzen shouldn't suffer too much.
