>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>i7-7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>AMD GPUs are suffering a lack of stock and Nvidia a rise in price thanks to miners

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

some of us just run the free version of windows 10. You can download it onto a USB installer from Microsoft's own website. There's a watermark in the lower righthand corner, and you can't use the personalization options until you activate it, which you can do through the windows store by either buying the license or purchasing a code as

Beyond those 2 small gripes, there's nothing the free windows 10 can't do that an activated version can.

The price is what's wrong with it, those would be great CPU if they were $140 or such because they are still very capable hardware. But $240 for a CPU that gets big FPS dips in any CPU intensive game, where even the $180 1500x doesn't thanks to it's 8 threads? That's not worth by any mean.
>>
>>61091319
>Easily the best overclocker among B350 boards

That isn't true. It lags behind Asus' own Strix and most of MSI's boards in terms of VRM quality. But it is cheaper than almost all of them, and a very good option for the money. It's the B350 board that I'd buy, were I buying one.

affected by mining =/= bad for mining

I got the Fury X for $300 not too long ago, and the goddamn RX 480s are going for nearly the same price. If the Vega cards have decent price/performance, they may be used for mining but if that ratio is too far off then they probably won't be.

Really new to building a PC, have only done it once. I'm about to swap out a GPU, so two stupid questions. Is the order -

>use DDU to remove old drivers
>power down PC, remove all cables
>unlatch GPU, pull it out, put new one in
>fire PC back up and install new drivers

Is it that simple? I'm also plugging it into a 3 year old PC - is there any way it can harm the GPU? I'm not building a new rig until Christmas, but I don't want to sit on the GPU that long, will pull it out when I build the new one. Unsure if there's any reason doing so is stupid.

Sorry for the dumb questions.
>>
Is the EVGA G3 a good PSU?
>>
>>61091596
Maybe. My bet is that it will be good for mining given that 580 are going for 400 dollars and Vega will be better than them.
>>
>>61091603

I'm not too cluey but I built my first PC 4yrs ago with your guys help and i really appreciated it.
>major software
Some video and photo editing (mostly GIMP), Skype, discord, VLC, etc; Nothing you'd consider noteworthy however I do like to dabble with the software packages Humble Bundle drops. OBS for streaming (not game streaming, just video capture via webcam).
>Games
Mostly OW and Darkest Dungeons, but I occasionally get better games via Humble; Dying Light, Far Cry Primal, Etc.
>Budget
Around 1-1.5k. I would prefer to make it as cheap as possible but from what I've been able to gather thus far I've trimmed as much fat as possible (minus the case, I know). All prices are in AUD.
>current build
I have a Haswell i5 (4760 I think?) 16GB DDR3, had a gtx660 that I upgraded into the 1060 you see in the list, mobo is Asus B45M(?). It has two 2TB HDD and a 60Gb SSD. If I could get a quote on what this may go for with the 660 that'd be awesome too as I can add that to the budget.

Love you guys<3

You have a 4 cores 4 threads CPU and you're "upgrading" into a 4 cores 4 threads CPU that has what, 5% better IPC if any? That's a huge waste of money you're doing, the difference will be less than minimal.
Either get a 6 cores R5 1600, better than that, or don't upgrade. A 4760 is still good for the tasks you're doing.
>>
>>61091767
don't go i5. No one recommends it anymore.
AMD came out with the Ryzen 5 family. I'd recommend the Ryzen 5 1600 since it'll be better at streaming with discord, and a web browser up while gaming.
That's the beauty of 6 cores and 12 threads.

>>
>>61091798
Nope, Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3.

Should I start lowering it little by little on a daily basis? What's a considered standard vcore value for a R5 1600 on stock clocks (3200mhz and up to 3700mhz in boost for a few cores)? Also, Win10 is still set as "normal" in the power options, should I set it to "maximum performances"? When I did I'd almost constantly see 1.380vcore on HwinFO64 so it scared me a bit.

Second question regarding Ryzen. I looked up the CPU usage with MSI Afterburner on games and too often the last 6 threads were shown at 0 or something 6 or so, which led me to think HT was off, but when I'd benchmark the CPU everything was maxed to 100% and the scores I'd get were the same as other people on internet. Under Task Manager, CPU tab, "Virtualization" (I don't know if it's called like this in English) is shown as "Yes" on my 7700K PC but on the Ryzen one it's on "No" - could it be it? I'll check the BIOS next time I'm on it (it's my sibling's) but could HT (SMT?) be potentially off?
>>
>>61091799
New build (getting a 5k bonus) and it's been a while since I built my last computer, and I really enjoyed the process. The old build is in a define R4 which is why I chose to stick with another fractal design case as they're top notch, if a little heavy. I would love to have a Level 10GT just because I fell in love from the moment I saw it but $400 for a case is dumb.
>upgrade
I'm not even sure how I could "upgrade" with my current build; it's sorta stuck with old gen stuff.
>>61091833
I was thinking this desu; after I got my 1060 I'm no longer bottle necked anywhere from I can see. I think I just wanna build for the sake of building desu.

Also, you don't need that cooler unless you want to overclock, but do you really need to overclock (right now) when you have plenty of power already at hand? Should be fine. An R5 1600 system pulls less than 150W under worst case scenario Prime95 load. The 1030 has a 30W TDP, so you're not going to reach 250W, so long as you're not planning on running a ton of hard drives and stuff.

I'm trying to understand:

What exactly am I supposed to be looking at?
Visually I can't tell the difference because a decade of playing games a couple of years after they're released on hardware a few generations old has desensitised me.

Is it that the FPS are basically neck and neck?
That the AMD uses on average 40% less than the intel for seemingly (to my eyes) the same performance? I notice that the AMD seems to rely a lot more on the GPU, is that correct? Thank you I am trying to learn.

Look at the last two
>1700 at 4.05GHz - 236W
>6900K at stock - 187W
>6850X at 4.2(!)GHz - 220W
Further more, just compare the 1700 at stock and its overclocked consumption. It jumps by 104W, which is fucking ridiculous when a 6850K jumps by a mere 42W while overclocking much higher.
>>
>>61092787
Great to hear, thanks anon.

By the way do any of you have experience of making fully (or almost fully) passively cooled setups?
How do I take the heat outside of the case?

I am absolutely clueless on which RAM to get. I'm planning on overclocking to 4.0ghz so that means I might be running it 24/7 at 1.35v if I have an above average chip. Is the cooling solution enough? Also to anyone who uses an R5, it isn't clear whether I can mount the HDD cage on top of the case. I'm not planning on adding fans to the top but I do need the bottom for an intake fan and I need to transfer the HDD cage somewhere.

You're comparing an eight core CPU to a six core CPU, you retard. If you want to argue that core count doesn't matter, let's add the 6950X to the mix, shall we? Or hell, just the 5960X for that matter.
>>
>>61092851
AMD gpus have a hardware scheduler, Nvidia don't, so nvidia gpus do the scheduling on the CPU, hence much higher CPU usage

however hardware schedulers use a lot of power, hence why AMD gpus use more energy and therefore run hotter, this is also partially why the GTX 480 was hot as fuck, because it DID have a hardware scheduler, unlike their new gpus
>>
>>61092894
You need a CPU that has no more than a 35W TDP and a beefy passive CPU cooler (which means a massive 5U chassis-sized case. And you'll still need some sort of airflow in order to force the hot air out, otherwise it will just continue to build up in your PC. Vents at the top of the CPU cooler are great for this, but you still need some sort of airflow in order for this to work.
>>
>>61092851
>Is it that the FPS are basically neck and neck?

Exactly this
>I notice that the AMD seems to rely a lot more on the GPU, is that correct?
GPU is used less for intel because the CPU can't always keep up.
>>
>>61092971
Sounds like I will have to go with air at least for the processor, are there any fans that are designed to be quiet?
I guess there would be no need to run it at high speed either so that could give it quite a few dB's less
>>
>>61092899
Well, for starters I'd get 3200MHz RAM, from a reliable brand that is on the Memory QVL support list form the motherboard.

that is an excellent cooler, acording to all the reviewers, and it's retty sure tht you can run your chip at 4-4.1 GHz 24/7 at good temps.
>>
Does a ryzen 1500x even need an aftermarket heatsink? I've seen people saying they can knock 10c off with a 212, and others saying the stock one is can hardly be beat for under 80usd,... What's the rub?
>>
>>61092811
holy SHIT that's an expensive PSU
Just get a good oe of the same specs for $100
>>
>>61093023
Any fan that goes up to 1000 rpm is considered "quiet". Most of the noise a fan makes isn't from the blades themselves, but from the turbulent air moving around the blades. For a 120-140mm fan, going above 900-1100 rpm, this noise becomes significantly louder.
>>
>>61093048
So I should get a small and slow one then, okay. Thanks again, this build will be great.
>>
>>61093025
The only 3200mhz RAM certified for that board is the AX4U320038G16-B and one from ADATA. It's like +$60 more from the last part I had on the list but it seems pretty good.
>>
>>61093037
It doesn't NEED one, no, but an aftermarket cooler is always going to lower temperatures. The Wraith Spire that comes with the 1500X can certainly be beaten for a lot less than $80. You can get a fucking Noctua NH-U14S for $65.

>>
>>61093104
the bigger the fan, the slower the rpm neeed to move the sam amount of air, tht's why they're not as loud.

the sound comes from the high turbulence of the air cashing at high speeds.

Is your PC still doing everything you want it to do? If yes then this is only psychological. I feel you, I went with a 7700k and sometimes regret not having bought a R7... but in the end the 7700k does everything I need to do wonderfully already, and a R7 wouldn't have done better, if anything it might have done worse in emulations, so perhaps I shouldn't even regret anything at all.

In your case it's true the i5 is much worse though, 4 threads isn't the best, but once again... if that shit does everything you need it to do, why bother? Otherwise, isn't there a way for you to get an i7 instead of whatever i5 you have? Even a locked 7700 would be a great upgrade if you're on a b250 mobo, and 8 threads would stop making you feel like shit. Otherwise if you feel like there's no way to make you feel any better then sell it all and go Ryzen.

i5 is better for older gaymen. I don't care about recent AAA trash so I'd personally go for an i5 over any ryzen anyday. Even in newer games they're very close, hell, i5 might be ahead overall, I don't understand why you're upset.
>>
>>61093507
>Why change the PSU?
The PSU I have is already 6 years old and now's a good time to go ahead and change it out and not think about it until a few more upgrades. I'm already a bit suspicious of it causing some random crashes as it is. My BIOS reports the voltages are fine but HWMonitor says they're unstable and there's no other reason for these hard reboots.

>Do you plan on using more than 32GB RAM at any point in the next 5 years?
Nope
>if not then get 2x4GB sticks
That was my first impulse but the individual sticks are about 32~usd as opposed to the one 8gb stick which is 58. The math doesn't seem to check out in doing that.
>>
What's a good, basic keyboard + mouse for my gaming build? I'd like to keep it under 60.
>>
>>61093597
What older games are you talking about? Older games are generally less CPU intensive so it doesn't matter which CPU you have for them, and nah it's a tie overall but the i5 is at much higher usage / worse frametimes so that's a straight up defeat although not big.
>>
>>61093466
>>61093583
I also want to add that everyone (for good reasons) has been all over Ryzen, so obviously if you spend too much time on /g/ and whatnot you're going to feel really positive towards Ryzen and negative towards Intel... but the truth is Intel CPUs are nowhere near as bad as you're portraying them to be.

I have a R5 1600 at home and seen it in action, I wasn't exactly impressed and I wouldn't trade it for my 7700k. Of course I'm not trying to deny this is the best bang for buck and best CPU made in a long time, but still.

>Just used their clean up utility too and it didn't uninstall shit after I rebooted.
Huh? The clean up utility removes the drivers then reboot, then install the drivers and ask you to reboot, and then ask you if you want relive or not
Why are you assuming it didn't uninstall shit? W10 already has drivers able to do 1080p on any / most cards, if you had looked into the bottom right corner to see if the AMD driver was running you'd have seen that it wasn't. It did exactly what it should, and you seem too stupid to even understand that.

7700K is a dumb choice unless you're pushing 144Hz, and you won't be doing that with a 1080 at 1440p. Get an R5 1600, a cheaper motherboard and buy a 1080 Ti instead with the money you save. You'll get a far better experience.
>>
>>61094525
It might work, it might not. There's no way to really tell except to see if people have tested the same combination of ram kit and mobo, even then at times it's not very consistent.
Make sure to pick a motherboard that has the latest agesa in it's newest bios updates as this is the update that improved vastly on the RAM overclocking.

any recomendation for a pc that i can put on a backpack?
was planning on a micro atx ryzen 5 1600x with a 1060 6gb. i kinda want to have a pc that i can use and study at work (secretary and doing xrays is not a constant flow of work, i have huge chunks of free time in between), but that i can bring to home when i finish or atleast on weekends when a friend comes home.
I was planning on the cougar qbx, or something like that, don't know its size, but judging from the pictures it looks like i can fit it in a backpack, but feels like it would break something easily.
im open to suggestion, im kinda consedering the 1050 ti low profile, which looks neat for something slim, but i feel like i would need a bit more of a punch for rendering and baking stuff with cuda.

Idk about how demanding streaming is but i guess that you will have to reduce settings.
With your budget you'll have to cut corners, too. If you can save 100-150 GBP more you can actually get a good build.
This will cost you almost exactly 570GBP and does not cut corners too heavily: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/JzXYZ8

No you autistic retard, this one specific mobo does not. Is has 2x hi/lo fets but only 3 chokes whereas the ASRock has only 1 hi/lo each but 6 chokes meaning a total of 6 hi/lo. Both are 3-phase.
MSI's 4 phase on the other mobos like the Tomahawk is arguable better than ASRocks wannabe 6 phase. Fets are the same shitty Niko's.

AMD's Ryzen series offers better performance than the i5 series at a similar price. AMD's cheaper B350 chipset also allows overclocking. No need to step up to more expensive X370 boards (The Z270 equivalent) to overclock. Ryzen also loves FAST memory due to its design so 3000/3200 mhz ram is highly recommended.
Not him btw.
One change I'd make is adding like a 120GB or 240 GB SSD for a boot drive.

There's no way the price will be higher by this time next year

You underestimate the miners.
>>
>>61097598
Nvidia is going to release cards that are for the sole purpose of mining so I'm not worried
>>
>>61097628
from what I've seen, miners will still get the gaming gpus because they have resale value. the mining gpus don't

How much slower is nvme compared to ssd in booting up the os?
>>
>>61098484
it isn't. There's just no measurable difference between the 2. People think because NVME has better read/write speeds and that it uses a pcie lane instead of a slower sata connection, that it'll be faster at booting... and it isn't. There's no difference in booting.
