Why there isn't a laptop general like the PC and Smartphone ones. The Thinkpad thread doesn't count because those things are a /g/ meme.

There are people who need a normal laptop for school/work or because muh mobility.

So, let's fix this. Laptop General Thread.

This.

My laptop broke 18 months ago and instead of buying a shitty new laptop I got a Thinkpad T420 and upgraded it with 250 gb SSD.

Works for youtube, fapmachine and programming. Dont think a brand new laptop could improve my experience performance-wise.

>Why there isn't a laptop general like the PC and Smartphone ones
Because most of /g/ doesn't believe in laptop to be used as a device, since you can get more performance for less money from a desktop.
>The Thinkpad thread doesn't count because those things are a /g/ meme
Not really, Older thinkpads are decent enough for everyday task.
>There are people who need a normal laptop for school/work or because muh mobility.
Completely agree with you on this point.
And even some people looking for continues power and all in one system and doesn't want to bother with compatibility.

Not really, a few months ago it was friendly thread, now it's infested with HP 2570p shills.
It can't be called /tpg/ anymore.
>piece of shit consumer laptop
What's wrong with that?
>>61072582
Why do you need gaming laptop?
>>
>>61072634
It's just one guy who's just too loud
If ask nicely a lot of people will still answer you nicely
Also
>whats wrong with a shitty laptop that shit itself in two years in every way imaginable
They're overpriced
They overheat and if not they're massively underpowered
They have shitty keyboards and trackpads
They're not durable
They age horribly or just crap out right after the warranty
They're horribly designed in most cases

>it can't be called /tpg/ even though the OP says every business laptop is welcome
Are you serious?
>>61072582
Build a desktop get a cheap thinkpad alongside
>I live in a dorm
Thunderbolt 3 laptop with egpu
Or
Expresscard laptop with egpu
>>
>>61072744
>overpriced
OK.
>overheat and if not they're massively underpowered
Not all of it, but yes those are common problems.
HP are know to overheat, Acer is cheaply made.
Dell and Lenovo are somehow good.
However the race to create "slimmer" laptops have made laptops vents small making overheating an issue.
As for underpowered, concerning about Intel CPUs for laptops, Newer CPU generations isn't better compared older ones.
3rd gen CPU can do more than most of newer gen CPUs.
And to prserve battery life the CPU hade to be underclocked.
>shitty keyboards and trackpads
That's subjective but key travel distance DID get shorter which is annoying to people who use keyboard a lot, but then most people who buy those laptops just use the trackpads.
>not durable
>age horribly or just crap out right after the warranty
You're right, but with planned obsoleteness you'll buy a new one in a few years anyway.
>horribly designed in most cases
Yes, I blame apple for that.

>egpu

these anons are 100% correct, there's a reason theres no used gaming notebook market.

if you still insist tho go for one with a gtx 1060 and read reviews on the cooling and if it's easy to access the fans for cleaning

Acer and HP are known for shit cooling
>>
>>61068457
Nah, Macs is what the /fag/ is for.
>>
>>61072958
Honestly planned obsolescence doesn't go after business laptops as hard as it does with consumer grade laptops
>>61072970
Well your other options are
>desktop+mobile laptop combo
>heavy gaymen laptop
>light house fire gaymen laptop
Egpu is a pain though
>>
>>61073405
>planned obsolescence doesn't go after business laptops
For older models perhaps, but newer one are.
>eGPU
Or small portable power house?
Of course you would need to search for the parts and then find small case for it.
I hope the NUC market grow more so we can get cheaper models.
For me a decent PC...
>Core i5/i7
>4-8GB
>128GB SSD
And it's possible to put all those in small form factor without sacrificing anything.
I carry RPi3 with me to use as "portable" desktop.

You're better of getting a console or buy small PC with decent specs.

How does a 14 inch laptop with 1920x1080 display compare to a 15.6 inch laptop with 1366x768 display?

In particular I wonder how the greater resolution affects things. The screen is obviously smaller, but since it has a greater resolution, would it perhaps seem more ..spacious.. and still be able to get work done on it?

I've used 15.6 inch for programming until now but I'd really like something lighter and more portable

your friend is very limited in choice considering the things he's asking for. I'm looking for something good for college. I'll be going to classes on Fall and majoring on Computer Science so I want to get a laptop that works OK for programming.

Aside from that I want to play some games from around 2013 but that's not really important

I was thinking on getting a T430 but I'm not sure if I should trust the meme. Besides the battery life is a huge problem.

My budget is around $300 which is pretty much the only thing holding me back from getting a higher tier device.

Any help?
