My laptop broke 18 months ago and instead of buying a shitty new laptop I got a Thinkpad T420 and upgraded it with 250 gb SSD.

Works for youtube, fapmachine and programming. Dont think a brand new laptop could improve my experience performance-wise.

Not all of it, but yes those are common problems.
HP are know to overheat, Acer is cheaply made.
Dell and Lenovo are somehow good.
However the race to create "slimmer" laptops have made laptops vents small making overheating an issue.
As for underpowered, concerning about Intel CPUs for laptops, Newer CPU generations isn't better compared older ones.
3rd gen CPU can do more than most of newer gen CPUs.
And to prserve battery life the CPU hade to be underclocked.

You're better of getting a console or buy small PC with decent specs.
Wanting >60 fps from games on laptop is a fool's errand.
In your case look for core i7,8GB RAM, dGPU with 4GB of vRAM, SSD you can buy one separately and it will be cheaper for you.

Finally able to replace my laptop at work. One alternative is a fairly new HP EliteBook 840 G3. Any other suggestions if I were to pick something else? For general IT tasks on the go, DBA and sys-admin. Light, good screen real estate and not a dongle monster. I guess either HP or Dell, not too impressed with modern Lenovo.

XPS 13 ($1500 AUD) or ZenBook UX430UQ ($1100)? ASUS kind of seems like a "cheap" brand, but then again I've heard problems with XPS 13 too like coil whine. Is the XPS 13 worth the extra $400?

Going to college in the fall, want to have a touchscreen with fantastic writing. Options so far are HP Spectre x360 and Microsoft Surface Book. Both have good battery life and screens, don't weigh too much, and have glimpsed i7s. I already have a desktop I'll take to college, laptop is mainly for notes (which I'll use onenote for, hence the need for a good digitizer) that has 4790k +980ti, planning on just rdping to that for anything intensive. I'm looking for something good for college. I'll be going to classes on Fall and majoring on Computer Science so I want to get a laptop that works OK for programming.
