I Pulled the trigger and bought a new thinkpad from lenovo. I bought it from their outlet. It was new, on sale, and I used a coupon to get 35% of my order. Here is what I bought.

I'm probably going to buy some ram and the ips screen to swap in. How did I do? I spent 500 + ~30tax

I thought of it too but I like this idea more.
x220
>upgrading ram to 16gb or even 8gb is expensive
>CPU are also expensive if this machine was T420 were you could swap the CPU
>batteries are somewhat expensive
>panel upgrade is unheard of
I don't like, when compared to
T61
>CPUs are very cheap
>keyboards are cheap
>batteries are cheap
>if you upgrade the panel now, there is a good change you can use it on T420 when you plan to upgrade
>ultrabay stuff also works on T420 (not ultrabay batteries)
>old enough so it won't have Intel ME vunerabilites
The only problem remaining is that DDR2 4gb sticks are very expensive. With the price of single DDR2 4gb stick, you could get 8gb of DDR3. That is why I think T400 is best computer due to being librebootable and DDR3 support.

Nevertheless, it's your money and machine so it's your decision. My plan is to stick with my T61 stubbornly for a long time.
>>
>>61067823
The x220 has libreboot, ddr3 is super cheap, and you can do the nitrocaster mod for a FHD ips panel, IIRC.

>and you can do the nitrocaster mod for a FHD ips panel,
Mod so rare that it has pepe on it's chip. I do not see this as a viable solution more than long on-going hunt for that part.
>Also parts are abundant
True, but I can't find any parts for my 22-year-old thinkpad and resources start to get low on 15-year-old thinkpad.
>tfw 22-year-old thinkpad uses dumb batteries meaning that I could build one for it because it does not require any chip (or so I do assume)
>>61067921
>might just chug with the 3GB of ram on the T61 and get a T400 later then
Install 4gb on it if it's chipset supports it.

Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out what models to look out for, but I was hoping I could get some suggestions.

Budget: ~$600, assuming this can get what I'm looking for
Location: nyc
Size: Medium to small, I'm looking for something more portable
Performance: I am looking for a laptop to use for recording music via audio interface. So, I would only really care about decent IO (a decent amount of USB ports), good display (at least 1080p would be preferable), good battery life, and decent processing power.

I understand that thinkpads are modular, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea (if it came to that) to purchase a lower quality one, so that I can upgrade it myself.
>>
>>61068770
t440p with FHD ips panel, maxed ram and non socketted haswell cpu.
>>
>>61068716

Otherwise just get a new one dude.
>>
>>61068816
x230 can be corebootable I think.

or the t520 has a really good screen but it's rarer.
>>
>>61068811
Thanks for reply, this sounds pretty good, I can't seem to find any models with the fhd ips display you're referencing, would this be an upgrade?
>>
>>61068991
there are stock options with the FHD display.

But you can always buy the display and do it yourself.

The only problem I think, it's that the max amount of ram is 12gb.

The dell e6440 can also use a FHD ips display and non soldered haswell quadcores, but keyboard and trackpoint is not as good as a thinkpad. but still pretty good imo.

btw you might want to do a trackpad mod for the t440p.

clickpad is shit
>>
>>61069035
Cool, actually was able to find a FHD transplant on youtube, looks simple enough. I'm gonna look through some listings.

I think 12 GB should be fine, I have 16 on the desktop I do everything on currently, and I haven't noticed it ever go above 8 to be honest.

What's the benefit of the non socketted cpu? does that imply upgradability?
>>
>>61062501

>>
>>61069081
btw the 12gb of ram I'm not sure if I'm right.

I say this because the t440 has a soldered 4gb stick of ram. I don't remember if the t440p has it as well.

In the high-end, the only E6440 configuration with comparable performance is with the i7-4700MQ, and those typically sell for more than $400 on eBay. The E6440 has better options for discrete graphics, though.

Best stock processors: i7-4700MQ (E6440) vs i7-3720QM (E6430)

I have been thinking to get a Dell as an alternative to Thinkpad. The reason being that they are just as good as T420 in terms of available compenents and their keyboard should be alright (non-island keys and three buttons for the trackpoint) while HP elitebooks looks tempting, the keyboard kills it for me. Also Dell latitudes does not have thinklight so backlight keyboard is a must.
Dell latitudes are quite underrated, don't you think? I mean they have a lot in common with Thinkpads or Elitebooks because they were each others rival brands.

It's T420, So I assume the air intake is from below while the back and side for venting?
Should I try putting something like an air filter below it?
>>
>>61074508
back and side are intake and exhaust
it intakes from one side and exhuasts out the other since thats how those fans work.
The vents at the bottom add extra air, but it's not really much.
Honestly your best bet would be to set a custom fan speed curve that keeps your fan speed off/as low as possible.
At low speeds its a lot harder to pick up dust.
Seriously though just clean wherever you live as much as possible.
or get carpet, then whenever you do clean just air for the carpets.

no, you can always take it out and put it in a new machine in the future, there's no reason to cheap out
>>
>>61075013
they wouldn't let you do it if it wasn't safe

technically increased speeds and heat will obviously wear out the fan bearings faster and more heat cycles will also degrade the cpu thermal paste faster

but these things were built to be used not babied, the cpu will cut off if it gets into truly 'dangerous' territory

NMB is always the superior option for typing. As for trackpoint buttons, probably the chicony by a little since it's less tactile (pretty much silent)

The part numbers for them are different so if you're ebaying, it is possible to know the make. Might even be able to tell which XXXX-YYY config gets which keyboard part number. >>
>>61062801
I had some fun gaming with my shitty W520. It's not terrible for gaming but your right it's rather unbalanced.

In Just Cause 2 I had most things set to medium-low settings, but I could leave textures at max as well as the CUDA accelerated water textures.

If you want to game get the (K)2000M though, it's something like double the cores but a lower clock speed to keep the thermals happy.

Also don't get your knickers in a twist for the 1080p screen, it'll molest your performance.

Oh, right, I meant K2000M since it's the W530 dGPU, but at the moment I didn't remember correctly.
Thanks for the advice, although I think that my issues with emulation speed (namely, GC/Wii emulation) might be related to using a fidget spinner drive instead of a SSD. I might land a cheap one for about $60, which has 256gb of storage, hopefully that will fix a few issues.

I still am in doubt, though, is it just a mobo swap or do I have to buy the W530 roll cage, too?

We all start somewhere.

It is mostly due to the forceful change in market.
Not many people want a powerful CPU in a standard 15" or less PC.
Those who do, ended up buying specialized machines for that. I think the mid/high tier socketed CPU market dried up, as they ended up going high end to CAD or Gaming laptops instead.

>>61070060
I would recommend a X1C3. X1C2's touchpad and keyboard layout was not a success. I am not sure if it can be touchpad swapped.

But if you can get an X1C2 w/ IPS for at a good price... try it out. The FN key thing was not supported under linux. Also they did somethings with the camera that would recognize hand gestures if you decide to use windows.

I've yet be successful with removing a glued on glass touchscreen digitizer, so I haven't really bothered after messing up 3 times.

Sorry if this belongs in /sqt/. If I bring my T420 to Japan, can I just plug my charger into their outlets or will I need an adapter? I hear the outlet shapes are the same but the voltages differ.
>>
>>61080430
It depends where are from
US, UK, Europe, Australia?
>>
So I punched my x201t.
The glass broke, but the pen and LCD still work.
Can I take out the glass and use it without the screen falling out?

The US.
>>
>>61080552
Does the plug of your charger have a ground pin?
Is it a polarised plug?
>>
>>61073403
arctic silver is old there are better alternatives out that perform better and wont short out your mobo if you get some on it
>>
>>61080576
It has no ground pin. Not sure if it's polarized but it works going into my socket upside down or not.
>>
>>61080676
Then you're good to go. Japan uses what is essentially non-polarised, non-grounded US plugs and the same voltage.
>>
>>61080708
Alright thanks for that.

The screen bezel on my T420 is loose at the top and it's getting in the way of the thinklight.

I fucked up one of my keyboard connector pins. Pic related.

This feels like a really tiny thing that should be able to be fixed easily but I have little idea how.
It seems like I can just stick a little shred of metal in there and it would work.
>>
>>61080430
>>61080455

It also depends on which part of Japan you're going to.

Japan has two electrical grids, each with different frequencies and voltages.
>>
>>61081096
Well he shouldn't need a power converter because they all have it built in
>>
>>61079509
Turn it off
Remove battery
Take it apart
Wash mobo with isopropyl
Clean out case with damp cloth
Leave everything to dry for a few days
Close everything back up
Try if it works
If rip buy new mobo and be careful in the future
If just keyboard is rip buy new keyboard and be careful in the future

I hear displayport on thinkpads does not support audio, but the wiki is confusing and appears outdated. Is it a thing with the port itself or the drivers? Does it happen on both windows and linux? Am I gonna have trouble attaching it to my tv to watch chinese cartoons? I'm about to buy a t420 by the way

well that took a big ball of stress to fix
There's still another piece of copper kicking around on the connector
Pic is only one of my attempts, note the jump it's making. I don't have soldering kit(not that I would use it on a plastic connector) and I didn't want to pull it up again to snap a pic of the working try.
FUCK.
>>
>>61081586
never had a thinkpad with displayport that did not support audio

I've used a T420 with a dp -> hdmi cable on a tv and it worked fine
>>
Does the x230 have any free USB headers on the motherboard that I could use?

Nice, that's what I intend to do too
>>
>>61082349
take little pos of shit out yo
>>
>>61082484
I should, but it's out of the way a good bit, inside the ridge of the connector, away from the pins. It should be fine.
>>
>>61081586
the DP port is wired to the nvidia chip if you have one. It will do audio in windows but not in linux, but it should work in linux if you don't have optimus.

Ok, maybe not THAT rare but I haven't found many, and they tend to be quite expensive, even a x220 is cheaper most of the time.

Also, I'm not sure the CPU is going perform well in the current year, IIRC is a low power core2duo.

Can anyone help on this matter?
