Why haven't you bought Intel optane memory yet?

And the most important issue: It's literally pointless. You can save money using common SSD than this piece of stupidity.

Intel sells fast SSD but people who want to take advantage of it have to buy a Rysen CPU with more pci lanes.
What is their master plan?
>>
>>60918659
and what exactly is it purpose?
>>
>>60921698
It's to intelligently speed up HDD performance. If you had a 1TB HDD and an optane drive it would be like having a 1TB SSD.
>>
>>60912754
because this pointless increment to "hybrid" HDD's is fucking dumb. hybrid HDD was stupid, this is worse. just put a fucking nvme m.2 in there and put the important shit on it.

lol so sshd? i can already buy that, and i already have that 2tb sshd for 100euros.
>>
>ITT: Retards that don't understand the niche this fills
Because I haven't maxed out my memory capacity and don't need a giant pool of extra OS independent ram
>>
>>60921763
>It's to intelligently speed up HDD performance
It's to act as an extended memory pool with smart caching, it's not just to improve HDD load speed.

It operates below the OS to extend what the OS sees as a memory pool so high RAM usage applications can natively use it as an extension rather than having to do with disk caching tricks themselves.
The main thing you'd want it for is stuff like media production and enormous SQL databases

That's just the first iteration of XPoint.
Once we have it on DIMMs next year, the storage stack latency disappears, as does the PCIe overhead, and it can become functionally a memory replacement/addendum.
As of now, it's glorified RST hobbled by overhead it was never meant to see. Intel only stuck this together when they realized their NAND controller could be crudely slapped on top of XPoint for caching. Even with the embarrassing implementation, that the 1st Gen of a new kind of memory already exceeds NAND in some ways holds great promise for the future, when it's not working with one arm tied behind its back.

Essentially makes your HDD into an SSHD, you just need the super expensive cpu to go with it.

You know a product will fail when the marketing slides from Intel was 1000 times faster speed than NVMe SSD and the final products is slower than NVMe SSD
>>
>>60923688
It can be used as SSD cache as well

Wrong.
see >>60921867
>>
>>60923840
> It operates below the OS to extend what the OS sees as a memory pool
It's a hardware cache, can you not see it? It's like CacheCade, but from Intel and it only works with expensive Optane and, therefore, dead on arrival.
>>
>>60923914
>It's a hardware cache
In the same way RAM is a hardware cache
The expense between having to program read/write cycles to hard drives (SSD or HDD) is WAY FUCKING HIGHER than letting the OS natively treat it as memory. That's Optanes entire advantage. It's a gigantic pool of slower memory with none of the caching and slowdown issues of writing to disks.
>>
>>60923923
> In the same way RAM is a hardware cache
Bullshit. Learn the difference between a volatile and a non-volatile memory.
>>
>>60923923
> letting the OS natively treat it as memory
It's slower that NVMe and NVMe is several times slower than RAM, what are you talking about? It can work as a swap partition at best.
>>
>>60912754
How does that thing work anyway?
Can you just use it as a normal 32GB drive and install gentoo on it?

>>
>>60924004
Has nothing to do with being volatile. That's an independent property. RAM is designed to be a faster cache for data being in use at that time. There is even faster cache on the CPU die, even in multiple stages. It's all the same shit.
