Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portgage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (packages) not found in the grimoire (repository) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

If I want to learn one programming language and be good at it, which one should I choose?

Primarily I want to write smaller programs and tools that help me around on the system. Should I choose a scripting language like Perl or Python or should I go for something more powerful like C or C++ just in case I want to build something more complex eventually?

I dabbled in a lot of the languages during the years but never went more than the beginner/intermediate levels. So I want to pick up and learn something and learn it good.

I have a surface pro 3 with ubuntu 17 on it - the cursor seems to freeze up and needs to be left clicked on the touch pad to work again - it's like the left click is held down.
This doesn't happen on Windows. Is this a sofrware problem most likely or should I just deal with it?
>>
>>60898987

You will never do anything and you'll give up after 2 hours.
>>
>>60899054

>>
>>60898987
I didn't think you'd ask this again, because it looks to me like a textbook case of asking a question for the sake of getting your thoughts in order and finding the answer yourself.

Your current goals and priorities are right there. What's keeping you is the idea that you should only learn one language and therefore you should pick one that fits goals that you don't have now but might have someday. Fuck that and start working on what makes sense now.

Does anybody use thinkfan? How exactly does the lower-bound and upper-bound work? The sample config has temps that overlap, does the next level engage when the current level's upper-bound gets crossed or the next level's lower-bound? How about when going down a level, does it switch when it hits the lower level's upper-bound or the current level's lower-bound?

>>
>>60898987
Pick a scripting language. Don't fall for the language as a lifestyle memers. If you need something more powerful you can use a lower level langauge - don't be limited by just one language.

Still, Python will get you far due to the number of 3rd party libraries people have written for it. I don't know much about other scripting languages (aside from using Bash as and when I need it), but I assume they all cover a broad range of uses.

An idea might be to go on Learn X in Y minutes and look through a couple of languages to see which looks the nicest to you.

Like others said, start ASAP.

Ok, so I was able to join my company's domain from Linux using PowerBroker Identity Service.

Now that I know that I can do that. The only other thing I have to do is deploy some kind of management software that can essentially image and maintain the twenty or so machines that will be running Linux.

I'm looking into Puppet right now. Is there a better software to accomplish this?

The security issues are all minimized by having the program being run by a normal user in the docker container.

Also, the benefits isn't just for security. This allows each program to have their own version of a certain library without any conflicts at all.

There was a lot of times for me that a new program I wanted to run tries to install different versions of things like Apache
>>
>>60899902
depends on what sort of learning curve you want to work on and if you have a language of preference.

Salt is extremely simple, written in yaml. some functions are lacking and the salt mine is unreliable

Chef is very nice, but upstream Ruby and Gem stuff cause it to break a lot which isn't ideal for production CICD and config management

Ansible is very nice, but I haven't used it in depth enough to know any immediate shortcomings

Puppet is pretty old and tried and tested, but I've found it's workflow cumbersome.
>>
>>60899966
I guess?

I manage my libraries via my system's package manager. I never run into any conflicts at all. If i need to use a specific version of a library i could make a virtual environment, package the dependencies locally, or yeah put it in a docker image. I'd ask what sort of fly-by-night SSH implementation you're using that has custom libraries?

I just use docker to develop locally though. that program I write isn't going to just run in docker off of local host, it's destined for a CoreOS or ECS cluster somewhere to run in a stateless fashion.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Ok I feel like I don't know what I'm doing now:

I did:
mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/sda1
mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/sda5
so that I create the filesystems.

Now I wanted sda1 to become "/" and sda5 to become "/home" since I'm installing from scratch and I've done this:
mount /dev/sda1 /
mount /dev/sda5 /home

But this last part I think I don't really understood what I've done or if it's permanent. Thankfully it's a virtual machine to try linux.

Its not, you need to set them up in /etc/fstab so they are mounted upon boot

What that anon said. And also, since you're dealing with fstab, you should also ponder >>60899867's advice on using UUID.

I realise it might be too much for you to take right now, and anyway getting used to the basic fstab syntax wth device paths is very important, but it'll do you good to start learning about the benefits of using UUIDs.

Daily reminder that clocking around on the cpu in order to save power is snake oil. The defaul setting, which is on most machines "ondemand" is just perfect, compared to powersave modes which make the cpu fall asleep later (because it's computing shit slower and therefore needs more time), but a sleeping cpu consumes less power than a computing cpu.

I'm getting desperate here. Stackoverflow has abandoned me and I'm at my wits end. I'm hoping someone can help me.

I am running Ubuntu 16.04. I am also living in Germany, but I have an American keyboard layout. For some fucking reason, I didn't have a "Compose Key" option in my Keyboard dialog. It is there now. It must have come in an update or something.

Anyway, a while ago, I was trying to set the compose key manually by messing with some system files. I finally got it to work with RALT, but now my LALT key is just dead. Or at least, I think it's dead. Alt-tab doesn't work anymore.

Is there some way I can just hard-reset my keyboard back to normal? It's getting really annoying not being able to alt-tab, and you basically need LALT to resize windows because the grabbable area on the edges of windows in Ubuntu is like 1 pixel wide.

Not a good choice for babbies first compile since it's pretty complex. If you still want to try it, check github, there's a repo with helper tools.

Try some smaller programs like scrot, lemonbaar, coreutils. Most C programs can be compiled by simply running make; make install. Some ship a configure script, which you can call with --help to see some options you can enable/disable for your program. If theres a configure script, configure, then make; make install.

Is there anything I can do to improve quality as an audiophile?
Is there a recommended distro? Or a program?

Linux sets the quality to what most users need which is more efficient. As opposed to the windows method which is just fucking crank it up for everyone regardless of their needs so it "just werks"

I don't think service files support variable expansion. You have to use the Environment=.

I'm trying out source-based distrobutions for the first time and I'm a curious noob.

How do I get optimisation benefits from compiling from source? What resources do I need to read in order to understand what I can do in order to optimise compiling from source?

I am interested in compiling an optimised Kernel, how do I do that and what information do I need to do it?

If anyone has any articles or web pages I can read to get me up to speed, I would appreciate it.

which distro?

it's 2017, you are not going to get much more performance compared to binary packages, what you are going to get is the power of customization, which is the real advantage of source-based package managers.

> Kernel
you could compile in all the kernel modules your hardware need, as opposed to just load the modules at runtime, that's going to make your boot time a little faster but besides that, no real difference.

I was going to install Gentoo but I fell for the Source Mage meme. I'm a sucker for mage thematics.

I've still got outdated and shitty hardware that I'm using on a day to day basis, so I might get a slight performance boost. What kind of customisation can I do with source-based package managers like Portage, for example?

Hey guys, I have a question about mpv:

I know I can use O to toggle the display of the current playback time. Is there a way to customize what is being shown? I would like to know the exact frame number I am on instead of just HH:MM:SS.
Thanks!

Different anon and never used a source distro, but I think I can answer that.

Complex programs often provide compile-time options, i.e., the ability to include a certain feature into the binary or not. With binary distributions, sometimes you may find that they omitted a feature that you want. More often, if you're into efficiency of that kind, you may prefer to save space by skipping features you don't want.

I recently found out that debian's mpv ships without libcaca video driver, so I can't use it to watch Mongolian dynamograms in text mode. What the fuck, man.

For a less silly example, a few years back I had to compile my own conky because the one in debian main lacked a feature that I wanted. It was probably integration with audacious, I'm not sure.
>>
>>60909539

What commands would you be using with your compiler(I assume GCC) to compile mpv with libcaca?
>>
>>60909570
Usually you don't run gcc directly. Projects provide a configure script and a makefile and you use those to choose the options you want and build the software.

From what I've read of the SMGL docs, that is integrated into the package manager, so you just run the command to install a package and it downloads the source and asks you about compile-time options.

https://mpv.io/manual/stable/#property-list

--osd-status-msg=<string>
mpv Peep.Show.S08/peep.show.s08e01.mkv --osd-status-msg "\${estimated-frame-number}"

also you can cut down dependencies or choose different backends (example, compile all your software to use alsa for audio instead of pulseaudio)

in portage you could do something like USE = -pulseaudio and now any software that has an option use pulseaudio will not use it.

Hey guys, I've got a question about Stretch.

I want to upgrade to it when I get some new parts and that is in like 2 months.
What's bothering me is that I want to go for zen chips but those need 4.10 kernel to be efficient and Stretch will be on 4.9.

I also saw somewhere that the fix for zen topology was backported to 4.9 so is it fine to use 4.9 with zen afterall?
If no, how fast could 4.10 be backported to Stretch, or should I compile my own kernel instead?
I never played with kernels and I don't want to fuck my system up, is it hard to do so?

While you will benefit from cutting down dependencies, optimizing for old hardware usually somewhat pointless because old hardware doesn't provides less extra instructions that let you optimize the code

Plus there isn't really an option "make shit faster", generally speaking optimization is a meme unless you're willing to do some serious research, because popping random optimization flags might break some programs or cause performance loss instead of gain

Some further reading
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Safe_CFLAGS
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Optimize-Options.html

You can probably just copy-paste cflags from Gentoo wiki, maybe replace O2 with O3, but Gentoo also has safeguards against compiling complex packages with custom cflags, dunno about Source Mage.

Wayland isn't even out of initial design phase
If you don't understand what it is, you're not supposed to try it yet

it seems that people are using wayland just because it's newer.

Well obviously if you're DE or Wayland developer, you need to have a Wayland setup for testing

Otherwise running Wayland right now is retarded

Yes, because Fedora is a bleeding branch of Red Hat, used to test system-breaking features before adding them to RHEL Beta

it's not hard to compile your own kernel, really.
>>
>>60909793
Yeah, what other anon said, it's not hard to build custom kernel
Just don't delete your stock kernel and you'll always have an option to boot from it
