Just noticed some strange behaviour when scrolling with the mouse in vim (vimx actually). Sometimes it takes a second to render each line in the correct place so you may get a block of code popping in or jumping up a few lines into it's correct place. I haven't noticed this before and can only attribute it to upgrading to Fedora 25 recently. Nothing to do with Wayland as I use i3 and it doesn't seem to be present outside of vim. Anyone had this before?

What's a tiling manager and why should I take one over whatever window manager Ubuntu has (Nautilus?)? Or can you have both?

The copypasta collection in the OP (https://p.teknik.io/wJ9Zy) recommends pytyle3, but I've went through all the links and nowhere does it even say what it is.

I've also been told Nautilus sucks and want to replace it, but with what? One of the links in the OP (https://github.com/aleksandar-todorovic/awesome-linux#x-windows-managers) has a list of "X Windows Managers". Are those special windows managers or, hence the "X", or are those normal ones I can use?

I always have used mednafen. Works well enough, very easy to set up gamepads, and I never experience anything terribly different from my actual gba.

Trying to use a Linux distro for (approximately) the first time here and I'm already lost. I installed the most recent Lubuntu on an old Athlon XP machine I have here, and Firefox gives me an immediate crash on startup (presumably because versions above 48 don't run on SSE-only processors, and the one that comes by default in there is 50), nearly every other browser I tried installing via the software center also doesn't work (QupZilla works for a little while and then it crashes too), and even the SSE build of Pale Moon crashes upon trying to open any site, outputting "Illegal instruction (core dumped)" to the terminal.
Well then what the fuck can I still do? The earliest version of Firefox that shows up on Synaptic is 50, and as I just said it doesn't work.

Backup all config files. That mostly means all dot-files and dot-directories in ~/ and maybe some stuff in /usr/etc/. Get a list of your installed packages with

I've been using Arch for a while but for some reason I can't shake the feeling that I've got it set up "wrong" just because it wasn't already configured OOB for me. Has anyone else experienced this? I didn't suggest nomodeset exactly for that reason. It disables graphic acceleration, so no wide resolutions and no modern DEs. However if you system only boots with nomodeset, then that's a problem. You will need a newer kernel from backports or proprietary crapware drivers.

Just upgraded my first machine from Debian to Devuan.

The only thing that I ultimately had to let go were desktop icons for removable devices. By using spacefm instead of thunar, I can mount and unmount from my file manager without privileges and with dynamic mount points, with no systemd dependencies. Having that functionality in thunar requires gvfs, which drags libsystemd0 but nothing else from systemd, so it's not a terrible option either.

During the upgrade itself, though, I accidentally answered Y to apt-get and uninstalled xfce and my current display manager. This, of course, dropped me back to text mode. Fortunately I was running my commands from a screen session. That should be avoidable by marking packages as manually installed, but I hear some of the metapackages involved have systemd dependencies and do need to go. I'll see if I can do a less aggressive upgrade next time.

One important bit: the official way to upgrade is to replace the repositories, install the signing key without verifying it and then upgrade. I find this silly, because the key can be obtained by less insecure means. I did this:

gpg --export Devuan\ Repository\ \(Primary\ Devuan\ signing\ key\)| sudo apt-key add -

It sure beats a one-off unauthenticated HTTP download, I think. At least you can use different servers and check that the key matches.
