Lots of people use their old phones as separate media players. Particularly useful if you have an old phone with a good DAC in it - shove a big microSD card in it and you're good to go. There are tech sites online with huge lists of uses for secondary phones.

Rooting can be incredibly useful depending on what you want to do. Too many uses to list but, basically, it gives you complete, total control of your device. If you really are interested in doing it then you're lucky you want to do it on a Moto G4; Motorola is a total bro company and outright HELPS you unlock the bootloader, one of the main steps of rooting. Samsung doesn't do that.

All those phones are still new enough for the manufacturer to be releasing updates for them. You only need to flash LineageOS or another custom once the official support is over.

If installing a custom ROM is something you're interested in doing in the future I'd forget the Honor 8, it uses Huawei's in-house Kirin SoC which means it gets less ROMs developed for it.

If you're just going to use it to store your music collection it doesn't matter much. Get the cheapest one and move on with your life.

But if you're going to set your camera app to save photos and record videos to it you want a fast one, especially if you're recording at 4k or 1080p60. The same goes if you want to put your apps on it, the faster the better. For these purposes there's a world of difference between a shitty slow card and a good fast one.

The camera wouldn't be as good on LineageOS, Samsung's camera code is proprietary so it cannot be used in custom ROMs. It's the same for most manufacturers , but some release the code so that custom ROMs can also use the camera fully.

Comparing camera quality on the stock ROM the S7 is quite a bit better than the X Compact. The Google Pixel camera is rated higher than the S7 in most reviews. The lack of expandable storage isn't that huge of an issue as the Pixel supports USB OTG so you can just plug in a USB-C flash drive or a regular USB drive with a adaptor to move files off the phone.

Looking for a replacement for my ancient-ass Galaxy S3. Will be purchasing unlocked, don't want to spend anymore than $700 CAD (~$550 USD) looking for a decently large battery, good rear camera and an SD card slot. Was looking at the LG G5, but after seeing all of the shit about its bootlooping issues I'm not too sure on it anymore. Also, I wasn't a huge fan of my S3, a lot of bloat and it slowed down way quicker than I was expecting. It also wiped 2 of my SD cards on me and needs to be restarted every day or 2 because of issues with data access through the SD slot. Would be willing to give Samsung another shot if their newer phones are actually improvements though. Any suggestions?

Galaxy S7 is definitely an improvement and may suit your needs as well
Some less expensive options would be Moto G4 or G5 Plus, or Xiaomi Note 4 Global though the camera is apparently shit
