First time owning a smartphone.

>use adb to uninstall program
Does that mean it's forever gone now? Even when I factory reset it?

>recovery
I want to install one of those recovery programs, like CWM. I can't find any downloads though. Does it have to be specific for my phone or is there a generic one? Is there something better? Because now my phone doesn't have one of those menus when you hold down a specific key combination before turning it on.

>stock firmware
Someone told me that firmwares are usually huge, with everything. I could only find one for my phone (Xperia Ion) and it's around 600MB. Is that the "complete" deal? If I fuck something up, can I just install that one and go back to start?

>use adb to uninstall program
afaik if you uninstall a system app it will be gone even after a factory reset. Reinstalling the stock ROM will bring it back though.

>recovery
It needs to be specific for your phone model. For newer phones TWRP is the best one to use, but for older phones only CWM might be available.

>stock firmware
600mb sounds about the right size. Usually (unless you fuck up very badly) going back to stock firmware fixes everything.

The XDA subforum for your model is a good resource for more info, guides, downloads etc.

I'm planning on upgrading my galaxy s4 soon. I was thinking about the moto g5 plus. Is that a good upgrade? I use my phone for web browsing, Clover, youtube, and music (Spotify, SoundCloud, and local). Having a reliable GPS is also important to me and good battery life would be a plus.

Or maybe a oneplus 3? I Dont do much in my phone so I fee like that'll be wasteful

Thanks.
There appears to be only one topic about recovery and they have both CWM and TWRP. Is there a downside to having both recoveries installed? Is it overkill?

Who is the "startup"? Huawei? They're a massive telecom company with deep ties to the Chinese state. Hardly a startup. And frankly, Moto is just a sub brand of Lenovo at this point, so either way you're getting chinkshit, even if the G5 is superior chinkshit.

help a phone nub /g/

I'm upgrading on vodafone UK - here are my options:

Galaxy A3
Huawei P9
Xperia XA1
Xperia X Compact
LG G5 SE (not sure the difference between this and non-SE?)
Huawei P10 Light

All of them are 'free' on the contract - so relative costs are no issue

I'm not a real phone power user- mainly for email, gps, web, IRC, camera but not too fussed. I have a passionate dislike for random shitty bloatware etc.

Battery life is important- must be able to last a full day!

I currently have an Xperia Z3 which I really like - the screen is really good (I think?), battery is nice and big and lasts for a while, the general interface + lack of too much bloat is nice as well. However, I would not want a phone that is any bigger than this.

I like the fact that the LG has a removable battery that I can change. I like the smaller size of the X compact but feel like I would miss the extra screen real-estate. I hear that the camera on the XA1 is really good. I've never owned a Huawei, but am not averse to doing so.

Any thoughts /g/ents? What would you get?

A3 (I assume it's the 2017 version): a well built, compact-size phone with a nice AMOLED display, great battery life and waterproofing. Performance and camera are average, and there's only 2GB and 16GB internal storage (there is a MicroSD slot to help with the low storage space). Touchwiz isn't for everyone, there's plenty of useful extra features but also more bloat than your average android skin.

Huawei P9: Huawei's last year's flagship and a great phone all around. Dual rear cameras take great still pictures but average video. EMUI is actually pretty nice for a android skin, lots of extra features without feeling too bloated.

Sony XA1: it indeed has a great camera. Battery life is better than you'd expect with only 2300mah, enough for one day's use but don't expect more than that. Performance is only average. Screen resolution is only 720p (below average for a 5" phone) with large top and bottom bezels. Sony's software is very close to stock with a few added features.

X Compact: A good mid range phone which doesn't really stand out in any way other than it's size. If compact size is your priority you can't go wrong with this phone.

LG G5 SE: There isn't really anything special with this phone. The modular concept didn't catch on so LG abandoned it with the G6. I'd say pass.

Huawei P10 Lite: a good midrange phone on its on rights, but a downgrade to the P9 in most regards. It is newer than the P9 though which might mean it might get supported with android updates for longer.

Why do you need it? It's simpler to have the SD card and internal storage separate. That feature slows the phone down as the microSD card has slower write/read speeds than the internal storage. I'd only use it if you have a small internal storage (like less than 16gb)

Having owned both an Xperia Z1 compact and an iPhone SE (and having used my brother's Xperia X compact extensively), I can say that the iPhone offers a better overall experience, better build quality and better after sales support, but you also have to deal with iTunes and a generally locked down interface. Android is less frustrating when you want to do slightly unusual things with your phone, iOS is less frustrating for day-to-day normalfag things. They are both good but it depends what you feel is more important to you. Personally I would probably not go back to Android because I feel like the update bullshit and overall jerky, disjointed design outweighed the positives, but your assessment may vary.

This sort of thing happened to me a few years ago here in Canada. Chink audio store took an order for an audio receiver that was clearly way underpriced to get people in the door, then later cancelled my order since the pricing was a "mistake" and tried charging me more. I ended up ordering it from another local shop. After that, I sued the bait-and-switch cunts in small claims court for the difference. It was not a whole lot, like $150, but I won and got costs as well as punitive damages back (because Chinks had no concept of how the Canadian legal system worked and were stubborn... so I ended up getting the receiver for free). The point I am trying to make is, even if these fucks try to get out of their obligations, you can still assert your rights and make them pay for underhanded bullshit. Grow a backbone and read up on how you can hold them to account.

Also the possbility to extend the memory with a microsd card.

My Z1 was having a few problems. The touchscreen would randomly stop registering inputs at least once per day, and sometimes the whole phone would lock up completely, requiring a restart. This, at first, only happened a few times, but eventually it became a weekly affair and at one point it did that four days in a row. Factory resets didn't seem to solve the issue so I think it was hardware related. Aside from that I was kind of pissed off that the phone wasn't upgraded past Lollipop and received no further security updates- for a supposedly "flagship" level device, less than two years of support is kind of pathetic.

While my brother's X compact seems alright so far, I am personally very reluctant to trust Sony again. And the update issue is something pervasive with Android. Since I generally keep my phones at least 4 years (my last phone before the Sony was a Blackberry Bold, purchased in early 2011), it is important to me that they last. Not only do iPhones seem more durable, they also get updates, which is a huge bonus.

Anyone have any experience with the lesser known Chinese brands?

Specifically Vernee?

I hear some of these Brands are pretty solid (like Cubot and Uhans) but for some others I read bad reviews and issues (UMi).

So anyone know or have experience with Vernee phones?
>>
>>60887553
At least where I live 150€ gets you a used, good condition Galaxy S5.

Out of new phones there's Moto G5, Moto G4 Play and Galaxy J5 2016 all with removable batteries
>>
For the folks looking to buy cheap phones, never ever buy a Prestigio phone, unless you literally like inferior quality and no updates.
>>
>>60887327
How good are we talking for battery? Like what is the SoT? Not the guy who was asking, but I desperately need an upgrade from my Galaxy S3. Camera does not really matter since I have a Canon G11 and a Nikon D800e, both of which take far better photos than any phone camera I've ever seen. Middle of the road is fine for capturing life's spontaneous moments.

Problem is I'm currently in the middle of traveling without a phone and will be in Hong Kong where I can hopefully get a legit phone from their "official" store. I just need to know if it's the global version on that link so I can still use it when I get back to the US.

Yes, it's the global version, so it'll work with the US GSM carriers. Make sure you don't get the 4/64 version as it's only the 6/128 one that exists as a global edition.
>>
>>60887949
Site doesn't show bands though (at least I assume so because they use normal arabic numerals in many places but there's no section with numbers like 800, 900, 1800 or 4, 5, 7, 20)
Just tell the people in the store what band you need.
Though I doubt they have global version in normal stores.

S8 is aids, especially on Verizon where you'll never ever be able to stray from the massive amounts of bloat or their garbage ROM. The Essential looks like a better phone on paper (and I say this as someone who owns a U11) but it's up to you whether or not you want to place a $700 bet on a completely untested company. As for the U11 it's a really good phone in almost every way assuming you live in an area with good LTE coverage as there's no CDMA support.

Where i live they only sell the shitty 1GB version, and even if it's cheap it wouldn't be an improvement from my xperia S, having a single GB of ram with an ancient chipset really fucks me over whenever i open the browser and listen to music at the same time, it either crashes or the music player closes, but i don't wanna sink more than 200 dollars on a phone because i almost never touch it, i don't wanna import one from china either, i wish they sold xiaomis here.

>>
>>60890848
Not the same anon but I also have a G4 Play, 2GB model.
It _does_ have a notification LED, but its use is extremely limited - it comes on when charging and...that appears to be it. There are apparently apps on the store, designed for other moto phones, which can give it a bit more functionality. It's weird that there's one at all.
Build quality is alright. It doesn't feel like a piece of garbage, but it is far from premium. The back has a nice texturing to it which helps keep it from slipping.

1. Is substratum shite? There's almost no decent themes out there. Most of them are either quite dark or too close to stock, most are paid and they often crash while compiling for some specific application.

No, the Mediatek Note 4 or the Note 4X won't get LTE on any US carrier. Only version that will is Redmi Note 4 Global, and even then it's only partial support (it has bands 2 and 4, T-Mobile uses 2,4,12, AT&T uses 2,4,5,17). Certain MVNOs only use Band 4 for LTE and it's also T-Mobiles main band so I'd only use it on those carriers.

>>
>>60896633
Yes seriously, they LITERALLY said that they'd update the phone.

https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oxygenos-3-0-q-a-with-helen.449242/page-3#post-14926014

It has an SD810 which can run nougat so why aren't they doing it? They're a much bigger company with many more resources than they were when they promised it. I'd bet $100 they'll fuck the OP3 owners over with updates next year.
>>
>>60896640
It got discontinued a few weeks ago
https://www.androidcentral.com/oneplus-3t-being-discontinued-make-way-oneplus-5

You can still get it from the chinks though

>Essential Phone
>get rid of top bezel
>screen looks shit because a hole for camera
>bottom bezel that serves no purpose left in
Really makes you think.
>>
>>60896678
Makes me think that it's an asinine complaint and the only ones who keep bringing it up are shills
>>
what are the chances I'll actually be able to buy and recieve a oneplus 5 this month?
>>
>>60896830
Not him, but I agree having the front camera take part of the screen looks retarded. What they should have done is put the camera on the bottom bezel and have the software change screen orientation by 180° when the front camera is used.
>>
>>60896876
And make a copy of the Mi Mix? That wouldn't fly

How long are those smartphones alive on average? From what I am reading their average lifespan is two years.
>>
>>60897075
Depends, some anons are still using/were using first gen Moto G LTEs which were released 4 years ago, all depends on the software in my opinion
>>
>>60897075
I had my galaxy s4 for about 4 yrs. They last long if you have a case and/or be careful
>>
>>60897075
My dad's Samsung Galaxy S still lives.

Of course it's slow as shit and pretty useless, but hey.
>>
where do I buy the Nubia z17 8gb ram model it seems that it cannot be bought and would it work with metro pcs
>>
>>60897142
>>60897150
>>60897196
I bought a fucking S2 on release for a ridiculous sum of money and it only survived a little bit over 2 years and now you are telling me I can buy a cheap Moto 4 that surpasses that phone in every way easily?
>>
>>60897230
Stay woke anon
>>
>>60897230
Yes. Welcome to the future. My galaxy s4 was king back in the day and now a $200 phone is better that it in every way except maybe the camera.
>>
>>60897230
Well, I have a moto G4 and it's all I think I could need on a phone

It's fast as shit too.

Now it's decreasing, but the development of smartphones and software has advanced enough that even chinese garbage will be better than the kind of phones you spent 700 bucks for 5 years ago. This shouldn't come as a surprise.
>>
>>60897219
pls respond
>>
>>60897219
Metro PCS trappin' boy I'm making plays
>>
>>60897281
With the price of the moto 4 I wouldn't even complain about upgrading every 2 years. What's up with the moto 5 though? Doesn't seem like an upgrade at all.
>>
Should I get a Sony Z1 Compact for 20 bucks from a bankruptcy sale? Wonder if it's gonna be beat up.
>>
>>60890848
>?
i had the moto g4 plus and it works good, before that i had a note 5 and the diference was huge, better perfonmance on the note 5 but the 2 sim slot was good for change between data carrier, battery great one day of use with hardcore usage, and for a reason the led never turn on with stock os, on lineage os works just fine but i decided go back to the stock 7.0 because of facebook app issues and didnt lock the phone with the sensor, i sell it yesterday because of money needs and i have a nokia now
>>
>>60897230

What is the best compact phone on the market? 4 inches is the optimal size.
>>
>>60897818
Manlet.

Shut up manlet.

You guys do nothing to bitch about how big is the screen and how tiring is to hold a phone without having your arms tired, grow some balls you fucking hipster faggot.
>>
>>60897818
iPhone SE. Xperia X Compact or Galaxy A3 2017 if you don't want Apple.
>>
>>60897901
Nigger I have a 5.5 inch phone because I couldn't find a decent 6 inch what are you talking about you goddamn size queen
>>
I think my iphone 4 is pretty old at this point. Twitter is really slow and sometimes you can't even see the full messages. Forget loading a gif or a video on twitter, shit will take ages. Apple's id identification in the app store makes me insane.

So what to get at this point? Is this appstore faggotry still in the newer iphones?
>>
>>60897142
that was a damn good phone.
>>
>>60897920
>I'm not the size queen!1!1! I just wanna know what size is the best!!1!1

>>60897921
You can install apps from the browser now. However if you get a $1k fashion accessory you don't need to pirate your $5 minecraft app
>>
>>60897952
>I'm still responding to someone else and being retarded enough not to notice

Ok

>>60897989
Whatever you say fucking perdiepie hipster.

Stop wearing skinny jeans. All the sperm is going to your brain.
>>
Motorola G5 Plus has no LED for notifications.
Alternatives for this price range without downgrading too much the camera?
>>
>>60898073
Afaik you can make the charging led work as a notification led if you have root. Check out Honor 8 as an alternative (might be a little higher in price)
>>
>>60898073
>I made my own thread to ask for this exact same shit
>oh wait!!!! I will post in the general instead xdddd
Nobody gives a shit about your led fetish fucking pajeet

I'd go for the 6S.

>significantly better battery life despite a 1700mAh battery (SD810 issues)
>significantly better camera despite worse hardware specs - Sony has always had very bad image processing
>faster SoC and has a fingerprint reader
>somewhat brighter and contrastier display but lower density
>no IP68 and memory expandability though
>will get updates for a few more years
>>
>>60897805
shiiet man are they getting the phone two days after U.S. markets
>>
>>60897805

Jesus christ this looks like a fake skit or something.

I'm currently using this. You can say it's my second Android experience (first one being a shitty Galaxy S4 Replica)

What would /g/ recommend for more productivity? I'm looking for a fast and powerful experience with the decent amount of beauty as the interface.
