Has anyone here replaced the LCD screen on a x200?

I have this x200 with libreboot, and yesterday I got my AFFS. I previously checked that I had CCFL, and installed the screen with no so much incidence. (Although I had to remove the tactile glass from the AFFS).

The thing is, that when the screen turns on, the inverter goes *beeeeEEEEEP* and the screen goes off. If i manage to restart the screen (say, by attaching a secondary monitor) and lower the brightness before the beep death occurs, the screen stays on, but very very dim.

Is it possible that I have a short in the AFFS panel? (how could I check?) Or is libreboot handling the inverter wrong? (could be, because since I installed it, the inverter beeps if the screen brightness is set to less than 100%).

Has anyone run into these kind of problems?

>>
>>60822262
They might replace the thermal paste with poo.
Okay serious answer this time, the only parts worth a shit are the cpu, ram, battery and charger. Maybe the HDD. Worst case you get a busted HDD, worn or fake battery and a knock off charger which even in europooristan is like 50 usd for all three.
So if it boots it's probably fine
I'd carry a copy of your favorite benchmark, preferably something lightweight like Intel burn test and maybe some hardware info program though I guess device manager works too for just checking the specs
Oh and don't forget to check for the regular shit
Bios password, computrace, physical damage, overheating, cum(or poo) under the keys
Just because they a different type of brown don't mean they don't steal

1. How to tell if they battery in a used x220/230 is genuine or not?

3. I used to have an Acer laptop back from 2001. By 2006 years screen became very dim even at max settings. Do x220/230 suffer from that? What's the rule of thumb when screen is on its way out?

4. What software tools should I use test used thinkpad when shopping around?

5. When traveling, what screwdriver type will suffice to remove all screws?

Is this battery ok to purchase for an x220? I am buying one without a battery. Any concerns I should have about it being listed as not tested, but sealed?

1. doesn't really matter, they're going to be out of warranty anyways, it either holds a charge or it doesn't

2. subjective, depends on dpi if you ask me, 1366x768 at 12.5" works fine IMO

3. modern LED backlit screens don't really dim or wear out like that

4. would not bother, if it boots into the BIOS it will tell you what CPU it has and how much RAM it has, it'll also tell you the model number and serial number which you can look up on Lenovo's site that tell you the original hardware specs, usually these things either function or they don't, so as long as its physically OK and powers on then it should work fine

5. a small phillips head screwdriver, magnetized would be handy

ok, i created a walkthrough list when shopping for a used Thinkpad:

>look over the laptop for any signs of physical damage and cum under the keyboard. slightly shake it and listen for any loose components.
>ask if you can take off the lid to look at the internals(memory, cpu, hdd/ssd, wifi)
>turn on the laptop and let it boot to OS. listen for any unusual noises
>look at the screen for any dead/stuck pixels and etc
>reboot laptop into BIOS/UEFI and check to make sure: no supervisor password, computrace is disabled, check cpu and memory specs
>on lenovo website check the service tag for stock specs and warranty
>restart and boot into OS, open a notepad app and test all the keyboard keys
>check with speccy for temperatures
>open web browser go to YouTube and play a vid in 1080p at full volume(no meme vids, don't make the seller uncomfortable, something normie like the "wrecking ball" song will do)
>test wifi and wifi button
>test all ports
>test power adapter and check battery info via preinstalled lenovo battery app(if it isn't installed punch seller in the face then continue)
>if circumstances allow form it, download and play a ranked match of Heroes Of The Storm on low-med settings

The black pill:

Nobody will upgrade their $150 2012 laptop beyond maybe the panel.

X220 offers a popular, documented path to a drop-in FHD mod.

2570p requires dremeling the entire lid of the laptop in half to make room, leaving a disgusting metal scar. Then you have to adjust the panel with Styrofoam and tape so it somewhat aligns with the bezel.

>>60825669
It's 1366x768. It's TN.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-Elitebook-2570p-B6Q10EA-Notebook.82051.0.html

The brightness is dogshit. It's 185 lumens vs 800 lumens on modern smartphones. You would barely be able to view the screen in a well lit room.

The contrast at 150 is unbelievably bad rivaling the T420. It should be illegal to offer such a display to consumers.

Let's face it, you are using such a dogshit screen because you are forced to. You have no path of upgrade outside of sawing the lid in half.

>>
Which one should I buy?

http://www.strawpoll.me/13147804
>>
>>60826025

Not the other guy you're making out with, but the 2570p kinda looks cute. Is there an easy 1080p upgrade? Google comes up with nothing and it's a deal breaker if its stuck with a shit TN panel.
>>
>>60826292
hinges are a little bit worse than t420 ones, but should last for at least 5 years of daily use.
Palmrest and screen casing is made of aluminium, so it's pretty sturdy. Rollcage is also present, just like in x220/x230.
>>
>>60826323
>Is there an easy 1080p upgrade?
>easy
no
>shit TN panel
I'm using 14" 1080p IPS screen in my other laptop every day, just like this stock 12,5" 768p one. And I can ensure you it's far from being shit. But if you really need the IPS option then you should consider x230 instead.

It's perfectly fine you gaymen faggot >>>/v/
>>
>>60825744
I just got used to it, since the trackpad on the computer that I first had one on was complete shit. Now when I use other laptops without them, I look like a retard because I start feeling around in the area where it normally is for a second or so before my brain makes the connection that it isn't there.
>>
I'm looking for my first tablet pc and I've just found two X220T in the same price. I'm going to use Windows 7 and Fedora (most probably with KDE or XFCE4 - depends on which will work better, I prefer KDE) and drawfag's software like Photoshop, Krita and regular browsers kinda Chromuim and Chrome for scrolling the /g/ or watching films on youtube or similar with multiple tabs opened

i7-2640M, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD or
I5-2520m, 8GB RAM and 1000GB HDD?
>>
>>60826350
I plan to get ~12' laptop, and have yet to decide.
I have T420 that I use daily, but due to my upcoming living condition, I need extra small laptop to carry around with me since I need more space in my bag for clothes, etc.
I was torn between x210/x220/x230, but now I'm considering 2560p/2570]

Do you need desktop performance (aka high end quad core CPU, 2133MHz premium RAM, multiple SSDs in hardware RAID, full eGPU support etc) or do you want to simply use it to shitpost and do basic shit?
Because if it's meant to be a shitposting machine you should go with x230 (don't get x220, it's deprecated). In other case get 2570p. It shits all over x230 in performance.
>>
>>60826372

I've already done the 1080p mod on my x220, but the wristrest feels a bit cheap being plastic. The metallic wristrests on the 2570p would solve that.

How hard is not easy? Is it just hard to find because a few links would be fantastic. I can't find anything on google.
>>
>>60826462

It's not well documented. Some chinks did this on 51nb forums and they confirmed x220/x230 lvds>edp board works. But fitting the new screen in 2570p casing is very hard with lack of free space.
I'd say either accept tn 2570p or get something else.

Sandy Bridge was always overheating piece of shit compared to Ivy Bridge. x220 has known throttling issues, unlike x230.
>lmao
>>
>>60826561
It's not a bad laptop (the HP), he just makes it look bad by spouting nonsense about how much better it is.

Performance wise it beats the x230, but in everything else it sucks shit.

>>
>>60826592

I remember the throttling issues only appears when you have it plugged into the wall, but with no battery.
>>
>>60826593
it's funny how to imply having all these thing such as replaceable cpu, raid support, 65W+QC support etc is "just barely beating x230", while "everything else" is better in x230.
Aluminimum case is included in this "everything else"? No whitelist too? more bios mods, overclocking, actual DVD drive/second disk, better battery options, full USB 3.0 docks, superior cooling?
x230 and 2570p are meant for different people. Just get over it, autismo.
>>
>>60826618
what do you mean by BIOS settings? Are you implying I should forcefully decrease CPU performance to avoid throttling? You know that's literally the definition of throttling?
And noone is talking about your T420. It's x220 vs x230.

Well anons, i see that nobody gives a shit, but I do anons, I do. So I'm taking a break to my progress here as a sign of praise for the community.

So:

Checked the backlight input resistance for shorts. Resistance is out of bounds, so I discard that there are shorts in the panel's backlight

Got a new inverter from germany (pretty good deal) as a preventive measure, because it is 8 years old, and sure I could completely destroy it out of dumbness.

It so happens that you can change the PWM frequency in libreboot with a few commands, so I'm going to tinker with the values to see if I get a stable signal (i should have done it before, I do have a lot of coil whining)

Anyway, who is also /toiletposting/ here?

it's their system. they could (and probably do) code backdoors. and you can't prove they don't since the source is locked behind doors. the ME exploit backs this notion.

you're the one saying they're nice enough not to spy on people, even if everything points otherwise. so yeah, the burden of proof /is/ on you.

Yes they do spy on you. Stay with librebooted x200 and don't upgrade. Ever. Whatever dude.
Also remember to libreboot your EC and HDD/SSD too, because internal firmware is capable of messing with your file system. Oh, and you have to get additional, same x200 to desolder and disintegrate the CPU core to make sure it doesn't contain any undocumented functionality in it.
also chipset, wifi chipset, bt driver... whatever else you need to check in order to make sure govt doesn't look at your porn folder and meme database.

stock CPU options in both 2570p and x230 are exactly same, hence are same in terms of performance. The thing is that 2570p has socketed CPU that can be replaced with any quad core model, easily doubling x230 performance whlie x230 has soldered CPU that can't be replaced.

1600x900 screen is disgusting in t430. Had one previously and it was painful to switch between IPS and this thing.
So it's best to just go straight to IPS 1080p. LVDS>eDP should be available on ebay or directly from 51nb chink forum. Plus you need the right panel and eDP cable.

Affs-anon here

I impulsively bought a new inverter but there is a chance that i got a defective screen. Returning is not an option because i scrapped the touch glass before realizing the tomfoolery. Shit.

Tinkered with the PWM values and now I know how to prevent my old screen from beeping, but didn't help with the issue. If anything, the screen dies later at lower frequencies, but any duty cycle beyond 70% won't last long.

I'm parking this matter until I get the new inverter.

But not until I make some remarks about what has been discussed here about CPUs, SSDs and x200 s:

About x200:

Been using this x200 for 8 months now, and at least for 6 of them, for work, everyday.

I got it for 75£ and even though I bought it as a hobby, to tinker with libreboot, but its portability and comfyness made me prefer it over my usual laptop.

About SSDs:

When i finally librebooted it, I decided that it would definitely have its use, so I bought a 120GB SSD for it, and slapped in an atheros WiFi card.

The difference is huge. It's another world. Parabola linux with gnome boots before any other computer at my work.
Open program, *click* there it is.
Open file, *click* there it is.

Under no circumstances or optimization is any HDD even close to SSD. It is is not such thing as "a negligible speed increase". No. Is attaching a fucking jet to the thing's ass. I don't even need more RAM in any of the computer I have, because when it runs out of it and starts paging I don't really notice a significant change.

About CPU security:

How in hell is a core ix more secure than a Core 2 Duo with intel ME scrapped off??
How is that comparable to a work in progress script that erases part of what they think is intelME?

It's a promising work, and will strive, but it is not there yet. Using a Core 2 Duo isn't bad. Situations in which it surpasses 50% are uncommon, and I usually have a LOT of stuff opened at the same time.

Thank god he used a tripcode...

Yeah I understand that upgrading to 1600x900 wouldn't be a really big improvement.

Continuing my rant-erino

About libretardedness:

I work at firmware and CAD for prototyping, so i have the luck of being able to opt out or any propietary software.

I went full libretard for work, as an experiment, and I must say I'm impressed on how good it went. The software catalog is huge enough to have a tool for pretty much everything.

I jump between IDEs and use the terminal for pretty much anything compile-esque, and use FreeCAD for prototyping. Seriously. It does the job pretty well.

It's pretty common that my fellow workmates who use windows are complaining about how slow the shit is, how things suddenly break, and how there is no solution.
I run into problems also, as frequently as they do. But when I look it up, there is like 20 posts about the thing in different forums. When they look in forums, they always end up with a post saying "hey this fixed it for me, check it out!: wanacry_ultraFuckYou_2001.exe"
Or ultra long threads full of "same here" "same here" "same here lol" "bump".

And THATs what I like about free software. It THERE when I need it, but help is also there. There is no cloak of obscurity, covering an incompetent programmer's fuck up, or a restriction that suddenly appears, because the feature i used to use is premium only.

It would look like I am some greasy haired weirdo, with uncomplete an unconnected ideas about software freedom, with an outdated shit laptop with unconfortable freedomtard demands.
But when I get the job done, in no time, with incidence solved, it doesn't look like that anymore.
>>
>>60830463

I must recognize that the libreboot part was for fun.

But still! I'm glad the backdoor is closed.

Its not only because of ME, I enjoy the full disk encryption approach.

Is not like i wouldnt open it up to the police if required, is just that if some fucko steals my laptop, I don't want the dipshit to have my data.

Got a few T440s machines from work. Repasted this one to improve temps, still underclocks under GPU load. Took the old paste off and found no paste at all on the GPU portion of the head sink.

Besides that, it's pretty amazing from a battery standpoint, goes about 10 hours.

c/p from last month:

quick hp 2570p review:
-all metal build is great, feels really solid
-screen is as bad as any thinkpad tn from that time, is "fine" for displaying information humans can look at
-pointer is pretty good, no middle button sucks
-trackpad is nicer than x220/x230
-popout keyboard lamp is hilariously useless vs thinklight(tm), but a neat mechanism to ocd fidget with over and over
-keyboard feel isn't any worse than a macbook pro/air, layout is not as good as xx20 or even xx30, motherfuck any kb that makes you fn modify for pg up/dn
-dvd drive in a 12" laptop is pretty cool, will probably put in a caddy though
-bootable esata port is nice, will probably be underused
-laffo @ smartcard slot
-internal accessibility is fucking great, everything is right there under one panel. once everything is repasted, upgraded, etc, everyday usefulness drops pretty quick, but man i won't dread getting in there like i did getting my x220 heatsink off
-broadcom wifi is shit shit shit with [my linux distro of choice]. replaced it with some jobber intel card i had laying around so now it doesn't take 30 seconds to reconnect after standby

it might sound like im shitting on it, but the 2570p is still a hell of a lot better than most laptops. that sata3 raid0 thing the one dude was jerking off over, cpu upgradability, dvd drive, might be enough for some people to overlook the design shortcomings.

final verdict: still prefer my x220, but a fair 2nd place out of all the laptops ive touched. will use as a beater or whenever i feel like mixing it up. might gift it to the next friend whose shitty acer desolders itself

Hello /TPG/. I got my first thinkpad and took some pics (X230t), I also have a question.

Mine didnt come with a batter but its in great condition so Im not upset. I have a slice battery currently but how does it charge? Only through the port on the side? Also can I have both a slice and a 6Cell at the same time? Do the charge through the same port?

Thanks and enjoy the pics.

after 4th gen (t440, please dont get it), the goyims at intel stopped socketed processors on laptops, making OEMs solder everything to the mobo.
