Anyone know if eDP screen upgrades need a new cable? I know LVDS does.

I'm going from HD to FHD on my x240 once the display arrives. From what I've read it's a drop-in and no need to replace cable, but I'd like to confirm if I need to order one before it arrives.

ok thanks, it does display a picture, but the resolution is fucked, will have to wait a few more weeks to enjoy my t430

>>60798818
generally, a workstation has a more powerful CPU, larger screen, dGPU (or a more powerful one), and less battery life than a Business Laptop

Think of a Business Laptop as being something you take into a meeting to present a slideshow on, and a Workstation being something you take to different offices to run simulations or VMs on
>>
>>60797038
If the item costs ≥$50 including shipping and other fees, you pay 16% of the transaction's price
>>
>>60799082
You might be able to look up the datasheet for the two monitors, and compare the cable pinouts to see if they're the same. Also make sure you remember to pull the battery, I don't know how eDP looks, but with LVDS the pins are so close together that if you pull it out or plug it in at a slight angle, it will short pins and blow a fuse (if battery is plugged in).
>>
>>60799326

It might be, although some sellers say "no, fuck u spics XD" and don't ship here.
Although I've read somewhere that there are mail providers that can provide you with an address in the US, such as Redpost or Estafeta Members. I don't really know if DHL has a service like that, too, but if it did it would be my personal go-to. DHL is great.
>>
>>60800747
>no fuck u spics XD

It's because you don't have a good track record of successful deliveries.
I don't really blame them.
They're shipping things that represent several weeks pay to the average mexican, why the fuck wouldn't you steal mail?

Plus, ebay is absolutely hostile to sellers now, if you can even lie that your package never arrived or isn't exactly like the listing and you'll have your money back 100% of the time and you get to keep the item too.
This is a good thing for buyers, naturally.
I run an ebay store, I don't ship internationally anymore.
>>
>>60800785

Which sucks, because of some random lowlife piece of shit cartel wannabe now we're fucked and some sellers won't ship because they fear that it will get hijacked along the way.
I can't really blame them, but it burns me that I see BINs of e.g. X200's for just $20 with just HDD, HDD caddy, adapter and battery missing and I cannot buy them because sorry no international shipping, go suck a dik.
I'll try with those services, though, and see if I can actually make a deal, though I'm not sure if the addresses they give you count as P.O. boxes, because there's also sellers who won't ship to P.O. boxes, either, for mostly obvious reasons...

you can get low-voltage RAM but even then the power savings are negligible in real world scenarios, but it may be easier on the system long-term

Purchase request template: Yes
Budget: Ideally $300 AUD, can rise to 400 if really necessary
Location: Australia
Size: Not too fussed really
Performance: Light gayming and general anime watching.
Other requirements: Nothing really, just a pretty standard poorfag shitposting laptop.

Just from lurking here for a while I was thinking probably a T420 or a T430 but I figured it can't hurt to ask. Also would be helpful to know what other australians have paid for such machines.

currently own an x230t, my first thinkpad

i was originally looking for an x230, but i wanted both the IPS and the i7, which i couldn't find on a regular model, so i went with the x230t which was roughly the same price. i now feel this was a mistake as i don't really need, use or want the touch screen. the t model is a fair bit bulkier than the regular x230, and it can not take a 9-cell battery, both of which are important considerations for me.

beyond that, however, the x230t has met my needs quite well and i believe the x230 would do the same (though i might have to compromise on the IPS to get the i7). with that said, are there any other devices i should consider? the Real Business Experience™ is important to me, namely serviceability (i intend to add an SSD and will likely replace the battery). basically just a 12-13" thinkpad-quality laptop with x230 level specs at a similar price.
>>
>>60804199
checked
and thanks for the recommendation.

i want a 15.6" full HD thinkpad that can take 4k video editing like a champ. i am never going back to 14". i guess w series is 15.6", which i'll obviously google right now after i post this reply.

is there something in particular that i should be looking forward to in a video editing laptop?
>inb4 gpu

>>
>>60804218
At minimum 8gb ram, ideally 16.
Ideally one big ssd, but a smaller ssd + a hard drive would be fine just be damn sure you have an ssd in it.
Other than that it really depends on the software you use, and if it's more cpu or gpu heavy.

>>
>>60805507
Then why are you compromising on the ips to get the i7?
>>
>>60805487
I bought the 2760p in america, and I'm european.
Ebay's global shipping program really simplifies importing stuff, and is a lot cheaper than having the package stop in customs.
The more expensive the item is, the cheaper the import cost is, in comparison.
As an example, I bought the computer for the $80 mentioned, and payed $10 in import costs. If it stopped in customs I would have payed 100€. This way I payed a bit less than 80€.

Unless you're britbongistan. In that case, you pay ebay the customs, then it stops at customs anyway lol
>>
>>60805487
So X220 shouldn't be more than 200$?

>>60805580

>>
>>60805517
And to add, you can't just look at ebay one day and see the best offer and just buy it.
Search the site for a week or two and see what's best.

European, as I said.
>x230 for me

>8470p for gf

>2760p for me
i5 2540m, 8gb ram, wwan card, 320gb hdd
$80 from america (base price in europe is 200€ or so for the lowest specced one)

So, just search before buying, check all your options.

>>60805580
Portugal. The global shipping program is around for a lot of european countries. even for the UK, but it seems it always goes wrong there for some reason. I was pretty aprehensive at first, but everything went well.

Also, never buy laptops from kraut refurbishers/resellers. They're worse than jews.
>>
>>60805628
I hunt a lot I know how it works but in my country you cant get a good deal because people here simply overpay for shit rather than leaving a good deal for a buyer
>>
>>60805657
Where are you from? Here in Portugal local sellers usually ask for 200€ for a x201 and ridiculous things like that (unless they don't know what they're selling, I once saw a listing for a fully specced w520 for 250€, the seller just said it was old and heavy, but I didn't want the thing), so ebay is a real life saver.

The French are another kind of memesters. They disassemble every laptop and then sell the parts separately, for a shitload. I've seen used thinkpad bezels for 15€ from them.

It seems the best countries to buy from in europe are eastern countries (Poland, Czech Rep, Hungary), Nordic countries (Sweden and Finland mostly) and the UK.

well the IPS over the TN Is a marginal upgrade for me, and i think i'd rather have the marginal improvement in performance. further, i already have the i7 in my x230t so the i7 wouldn't so much be a performance increase as the i5 would be a performance decrease, and even if it's small, i'd rather not compromise on that

my question isn't "i7 and TN vs. i5 and IPS" so much as it is "if i like the x230 are there any other machines i should consider before buying"
>>
>>60801944
265 for i5 version, 400 for i7 version, 20, for a teensy 2.0 microcontroller
>>
>>60805989
Yes, the scandinavian countries use a really sensible layout for northern europe as a whole.
It differs a bit from southern european layouts, like the portugues, but I don't really look at the keyboard.

ATM I use a UK layout mech keyboard, a portuguese keyboard and the swedish keyboard. If it has the keys, it's good to go.

Hey /tpg/, about to pull the trigger on a T460, can you pricecheck this?

T460
i5-6300U
8GB DDR4 2133 MHz
1366x768 garbage (will be replaced ASAP)
256GB M.2 SSD
6 cell battery

brand new, box opened for testing, for $560

Will be switching from a T420 with i5-3340M, 16GB DDR3L 1600 MHz, 250GB Samsung 840 Evo - will I get equivalient/better performance out of the T460?

Will use GNU/Linux on it.

I'm probably going to sell my X220. Issue is the keyboard has a broken key and has a different layout.

So I've been thinking about buying a new one for it which is already quite a loss, but I'm wondering: Are there fake or shit keyboards for this? Is there an actual risk of buying some chinese crap for 40 bucks?

Anon here with a W540 i7 4600m k2100m on Windows 10. I went ahead and replaced the w540's meme touchpad with a t450 touchpad. I've done the registry edits needed for the synaptics driver to work properly with the 3 buttons. It is fucking glorious. However sometimes, when I restart windows the touchpad and the trackpoint lags like ass, but will sometimes dissappear after time. Does anyone have issues upgrading their X40 series thinkpad touchpads?
I could have gone with a w541 but when I was in the market they are expensive for even the k1100m model. The w541 actually went down in price. Maybe I should sell the w540 and upgrade to the w541 to get peace of mind with the touchpad drivers or just leave windows 10 and install.

If there's a T530 listing with the colorimeter on it, it has to be the 1080p panel, right?
>>
>>60817720
>>60817714

what would be a fair price for the specs listed in that listing?

Going to libreboot my UXGA T60. It will be glorious.

>"Windows is installed but not activated..."

That's not right, there's something fishy going on there and a telling sign that something is fishy, I'd pass on it personally but then again that machine as configured (at least to me) is worth about $325 tops anyway.

What kind of cooler do I have to swap in to put in a quad on my T430? Do I have to mod it?

The seller has 99% positive feedback from 909 transactions, and there's 30 people viewing it per hour. It probably got posted recently and someone's going to buy it soon.

People will also find better deals than that, and others will spend more for worse. Such is life on ebay

It is but ebay does have buyer protection doesn't it? You could order it check for bios password, computrace and cum under the keys.

dGPU cooler (no mods to the cooler).
No coreboot, but a custom vendor BIOS.
No problems, it effectively makes the processor 4.0GHz with a boost to 4.2GHz.

>>
>>60818707
Make sure you don't get the one with a Delta fan. I have it and with a i7-3740QM it overheats horribly. Apparently the Toshiba one is better, but louder.
>>
>>60819308
Is that the one with the narrow cut out? Or does it say on the fans
>>
>>60819326
Yep, that's the one. The delta one has enormous cutouts, but that's just to keep it quiet.
>>
>use a trackpoint for a couple days constantly then try to use my normal mouse on my desktop and it feels weird and almost have a weird muscle memory sensation that I'm moving my cursor with a trackpoint even though I'm obviously using a mouse
What the fuck have you done to me /g/. I should've listened to my parents when they said not to listen to /g/.
>>
>>60819331
Interesting. I have the delta one on my igpu heatsink and my 3630qm did not like it much (throttled down to 2.9 and constantly at 99c)
I thought the delta ones were the better ones that everyone wanted
>>
>>60819302
stop lying, you butthurt t430 fag. In every single thread you're being told by t430 users it throttles even on dual core cpu. Deal with it and stop baiting people into buying this shitty sublaptop.
>>
>>60819373
They're way quieter, but don't spin as fast. I'm waiting for my Toshiba fan to arrive, it'll be interesting to see if it works better.
>>
>>60819391
There's 2 different heatsink variants, and there's 2 different fans that could be in a T430. This is why some people get different results.
>>
>>60819302
dualcore dgpu
If I turn off the dgpu it only throttles a little bit under load
but with the dgpu on it goes all the way down to 1.2ghz
It's basically a 2012 retina macbook pro in the way it throttles
>>
>>60819413
dGPU heatsink does not fix the overheating issue. dGPU heatpipe from it is not even connected directly to CPU heatsink, so it makes zero difference in temperatures.

>it is not even connected directly to CPU heatsink, so it makes zero difference in

Probably bait, but in case you are retarded and don't know physics, the copper will dissipate throughout itself and since the other copper pipe is connected to the entire unit (and halfway up the other pipe), it will reach the other pipe.

Heatsink with more mass = better dissipation, and since that extra heatsink isn't being set on fire by the GPU, it has a significantly better capacity to hold heat compared to one without it.
>>
>>60819650
More Mass = Higher capacity. When the capacity is reached, then you throttle.

If you were to mill out a small solid block of copper, then welded it to the bottom of the second pipe, you would increase its' capacity to hold heat even more, despite it not touching the CPU. Why the fuck do you think there are copper fins to each side of the fan?.
