So I had to give my w510 to my lil brother because the shit needed a pc.

I want a boxy laptop. Should I go with something brand new or just get a w520 or something

>>
>>60836007
Looks good.
>>
>>60836183

I'm OP. I think it's because of it's size and weight. The T440P seems a lot heavier and thicker. I think I snatched mine up for a bargain though, the shop that had it had been trying to get rid of it for a year. It's manufacture refurbished by lenovo but it's in immaculate condition, storage only had like 7 power on's and the battery only had 1 cycle count. Not a single dent or scratch anywhere on it.
>>

AFFS/X200 anon, if you're lurking, I need your help.

my panel arrived earlier today and I just swapped it. terrible bleeding on the right side. I noticed pressure worsens the problem.

I also noticed the inverter gets hot, considerably so. did this happen to either of yours?

but I'm guessing the screen is the problem since a stuck red pixel just showed up. wasn't there the first time around.

I bought a genuine BOE-Hydis like yours (no digitizer though) but I'm thinking about trying one of the cheaper, 'compatible' ones since these are 10 years old.
>>
>>60835917

So a bunch of colleagues at work play this boring game called Overwatch and they have been trying to get me on this game but I don't have a proper desktop and nor do I even want one, since I live in a very cramped apartment.

ok, i created a walkthrough list when shopping for a used Thinkpad:

>look over the laptop for any signs of physical damage and cum under the keyboard. slightly shake it and listen for any loose components.
>ask if you can take off the lid to look at the internals(memory, cpu, hdd/ssd, wifi)
>turn on the laptop and let it boot to OS. listen for any unusual noises
>look at the screen for any dead/stuck pixels and etc
>reboot laptop into BIOS/UEFI and check to make sure: no supervisor password, computrace is disabled, check cpu and memory specs
>on lenovo website check the service tag for stock specs and warranty
>restart and boot into OS, open a notepad app and test all the keyboard keys
>check with speccy for temperatures
>open web browser go to YouTube and play a vid in 1080p at full volume(no meme vids, don't make the seller uncomfortable, something normie like the "wrecking ball" song will do)
>test wifi and wifi button
>test all ports
>test power adapter and check battery info via preinstalled lenovo battery app(if it isn't installed punch seller in the face then continue)
>if circumstances allow form it, download and play a ranked match of Heroes Of The Storm on low-med settings

what else would you add?
>>
>>60840732
Just because it runs, doesn't mean it works.
>>
>>60836472
My T430 runs it at 30 fps at 720 on very low. A W model or new T should have a bit better luck. Just don't get anything older than the w520

Imo the game isn't that fun anymore so I wouldn't go with something too expensive either

This.

That's why you bring a USB flash drive with puppy to test it.
>look at the screen for any dead/stuck pixels and etc
And try wiping the small smudges, sometimes it can't be removed.
Also try displaying grey image and look at the screen from different angles.

>open web browser go to YouTube and play a vid in 1080p at full volume
Why?

>what else would you add?

Test can take a while. Just open the lid, look at internals and make sure they don't smell like coffee, turn on the laptop and if it goes through POST then everything should be fine.

>Also try displaying grey image and look at the screen from different angles.

Just buy from ebay.
If something doesn't work, you can complain to the seller and they will bend over backwards to fix it because they know that you can complain to ebay and ebay will force a total refund if the customer is dissatisfied.
And you'll even get to keep the thinkpad.

Well, when USB 3.0 was widely used and made 2.0 unusable for some.

Because of the main reason shills happen to anything: desire for attention, aka bait.

It isn't that old, but in regards of iGPU it gets it's ass kicked by Ivy Bridge.

why does entering UEFI depend on Windows?

Pressing F1 (or Fn+F1) during boot doesn't work. The only way is to do the following in Winblows 10:

I have a T500. I get one 54mm Expresscard and one 32-bit cardbus slot, yes? The wiki features list for the T500 has "(on select models)" after both of those, but if I have the two slots on my machine then that's what they are, right? I want to make sure before I buy something to plug in them.

Hey guys, my x201 shat itself after a few years (shutting off randomly) and I think I just want a new damn computer.

x220's seem alright, though really all I want is:
- vintage business aesthetic
- small and light
- good keyboard and screen

X230

The keyboard and aesthetic both seem worse.

I said jack about CPU/GPU power because it hardly matters to me, if that's all then I'm sticking with x220. That or an x240 because at least those have a stock 1080p IPS variant.

X220's are good machines, however the X230 is much better. I'm 99% sure most people would be happier for longer with an X230 over an X220.

the keys feel the same and overall the keyboard is sturdier and has less flex

only thing that bothers me is the lack of space between F4/F5 and F8/F9, the newer ThinkPads fixed that though so it was obviously recognized as a problem

T420 is a halfassed machine that doesn't know what the fuck it wants to be.

>Cheapest piece of shit display they could possibly have put in a laptop
>Yes, even the 1600x900 panel belongs in a trash can
>Only just barely weighs less than its bigger brother T520, which comes with a significantly better display and has an option for a 1920x1080 wide gamut panel from the factory
>Is not thinner than T520, only marginally smaller in other dimensions

Drop the T420. The portability argument for buying it is shit. Reasonable models in the 20 series are X220, X220t, T420s, T520, and W520.
T420s is also a huge compromise, but at least it's a compromise that makes sense. You give up some battery life and cooling performance in favor of actual portability; The s model is actually fairly lightweight at about 1.67kg. Meanwhile the regular T420 weighs in at 2.24kg, with the T520 only weighing a large bag of candy more at around 2.5kg.
The s model also suffers from the same shitty ass display panel as the regular T420, but this can be upgraded to an IPS display provided you manage to get your hands on a conversion kit (good luck with that), which for some reason unknown to me supposedly doesn't work all too well on the regular T420. But again at least it makes sense to pick a T420s because it is legitimately easier to carry in a bag than a T520.

it doesn't work well because of noise coming from power section in t420. Display cable is very close to the CPU, and even if you shield it heavily and use the newest 10 layer conversion PCB it will still be too much noise to handle.

Pajeet detected. This is the kind of sentence I'm used to hearing when I'm on the phone with a pajeet.

You don't know the definition of modularity. During 2010-2013 HP did not sell more business laptops to companies than Lenovo did. The keyboards on both machines you mentioned are fucking identical, what the hell are you talking about? They're both utter fucking shit. My old Samsung netbook has a better keyboard than both those machines. While the 2560p has some undeniable nice qualities, like faster RAM, quad core options and space for a CD drive or extra HDD, its nowhere near enough to redeem it. What the fuck is the point in even having a trackpoint if there's no middle click for scrolling? Why have the trackpoint deliberately gimped to only do most functions and not all? Why have a magnesium almost-unibody which needs replacing in its entirety should you ever damage a small part of it? Internal rollcages are miles better than metal unibodies. The X230 has the magnesium structures where it can to sufficiently prevent mobo flex.

All in all, you're a fucking idiot arguing a lost cause.

Can someone translate what this nigger retard is talking about?
Just because 2570p has an aluminium palmrest doesn't mean it's unibody. It still has internal rollcage which has NOTHING to do with palmrest.
You fucking retard.

So, you're talking about fucking KEYSWITCHES and not the important part, which is the fact that its a shitty flat chiclet style? At least the X230 does that right. Let me explain this in the simplest terms for a retard like you. If you damage the palm rest on an X220/X230, you replace the palm rest, not the whole fucking magnesium upper. Want to have a FPR, the option is there, don't want one? Its gone. Want a totally plain palm rest without even a ThinkPad embalm? Done. That's and example modularity.

I could not have said it any clearer than I just did. Face it, even on eBay there's barely any demand or supply of the 2560p/2570p. Don't have to upgrade your laptop, don't have to spend lots on modern eGPU cases - just get a low power passively cooled GPU (something like a GTX 1030/1040 and you'll be able to play games completely satisfactorily at very little cost and without having to give up your T60!

>chiclet is bad because I said so!
>what? you enjoy chiclet keyboard more than I do? You fucking retard! How dare you?
If you damage METAL palmrest (which is hard btw, unlike plastic x230) you replace palmrest. It costs $5 on ebay and you must be retarded beyond repair if you overcomplicate this.
2570p is more modular than x230. Everything that is replaceable in x230 is also replaceable in 2570p, plus CPU.
Both x230 and 2570p are older than 5 years, so it's not shocking that nobody talks about it. You stupid shitposter.
God damnit what am I even doing in this shill thread at this point. Enjoy your autistic safespace while you can.

lel, nice projecting tho
it's so funny how there is literally one shill for hp that surfaces every thread to defend anything said about the line

Here are the facts:

hp can't make a proper hardware user interface

their elitebook line is barely distinguishable from pavillions in terms of material construction and their warranty is complete trash

HP enterprise lines are notorious for mainboard failure

If you use HP """""""""""""""""enterprise""""""""""""""" hardware you might as well just consider low end consumer gear. It's cheaper and feels/lasts about the same

>mindlessly defending lenovo trash
lel, nice projecting tho
it's so funny how there is literally one shill for lenovo that surfaces every thread to defend anything said about 2570p being superior towards x230.

Here are the facts:

lenovo limits their hardware abilities for marketing purposes:
1) wlan/wwan whitelists
2) mSATA degraded to 3Gbps speeds
3) batteries dying instantly if you attempt replacing cells with fresh ones
4) absolutely trash screens
5) software backdoors (superfish, AMT that is still enabled even if you ""disable"" it in BIOS
6) hardware backdoors (ata password can be generated using motherboard serial number by lenovo and handed over to police on request, even hp doesn't do that lmao)
7) users being silenced on their support forums, they don't give a fuck about user feedback, while HP INSTANTLY REMOVED WHITELIST ON COMMUNITY REQUEST IN CASE OF 2570P, HAHAAHAH
8) lenovo is a gook company, while HP is purely american. If you're a real patriot you support american companies.

their thinkpad line is already same as thinkpad edge and ideapad lines.

Lenovo shitpads are known to overheat and explode in some cases, that's why they were obligated by the court after years of ignoring customer reports to RECALL ALL BATTERIES FROM FAULTY LINES, HAAHAHAHAH

If you use Lelnopevovo """""""""""""""""enterprise""""""""""""""" hardware you might as well just consider killing yourself and your family which apparently is reponsible for abomination of human called (You).

Also jokes aside I've never recommended any other elitebook other than 2570p, so how about you check your facts and fuck off. Dumb nigger.

Considering 2570p vs x230.
IMO x230 looks beautiful, but 2570p seems to win in performance via hardware upgrades.
If you outfit 2570p with that quad-core(can't do that on x230), 9-cell battery and that 2133MHz RAM(not possible on x230) - how will these affect battery life and heat if you compare it to x230 with a 9-cell battery too?

high 45W quad cores require modding the heatsink.
during internet browsing or some light shit like that you can expect about 20% of battery life degradation in case of i7-3840qm vs i5-3320m.
Both i7-3840qm ad i5-3320m idles at same temperatures and power consumption (around 3W)

what do you need that much performance for in an ultraportable? plus you're still stuck with the integrated graphics

and RAM speeds don't really affect anything, pretty negligible among all benchmarks and real world scenarios
>>
>>60856769
RAM speed has big impact on iGPU performance.
In my case about 25% FPS increase in all source-based games when upgraded from 1600MT/s ram to 2133.

My uni's minimum system requirements are 16 GB ram, dual-core i5 gen 6 or higher, and a 256 GB SSD. They want us all to be able to run Windows 10 but I doubt they'll actually care. Which Thinkpad should I get?
>>
>>60856737
so to sum it up:
>less battery time
>same temps
>need to buy a heatsink
what heatsink though?
>>
>>60856984
Of course it's less battery time. Are you surprised?
You don't buy a heatsink. You buy small piece of copper and you solder/glue it with thermal compound to the heatpipe. You can use copper coins if you're poor. This takes like 3 minutes to finish.

X230 is a good choice low-budget choice.
people here seem to imply that X240 is not worth it due to some unknown reasons to me.
not sure about X250, X260, X270 but they are much newer and more expensive.
what are you going to use it for?

Hello /g/, I need an advice. Should i buy:

Lenovo Thinkpad T440

i5-4210U
8 Gb DDR3 RAM
120 GB SSD Samsung
Intel HD 4400 Graphics
14" IPS screen 1600x900
Battery has 22% decay.
Price: 350 €

Or:
processor: Intel® Core i5-6300U
Intel HD Graphics 520 4GB
128 GB SSD
RAM: 8GB DDR3
display: 15,6 1366 x768 ) Anti-Glare
Price: 450 €

Lithuanian. I intend to play some low req games like "Don't starve" and "Minecraft" too from time to time. Honestly, these two seem to be the best options.
>>
>>60840430
x220 works bretty well with os x. you're just going to replace the internal wifi card with some other brand ($8 on ebay, guides tell you which exactly).

everything else works out of the box.

protipp: replace the x220 shitpanel with an IPS one. around $80 on ebay. 10 minutes of work if you've never done it before.

no idea about the hp. seems like aids.

I see, so:
2570p with i7-3632qm, 8GB 2133Mhz > x230 stock but at expense of some battery life(less than if you went with 45W quad core) and same heat stats?
