I'm interested in purchasing a thinkpad and loading Linux on it. Been a windows fanboy up until this point but not only do I need to learn Linux but I am pretty frustrated with windows 10. I mainly will be using the laptop for programming, electrical design, web browsing and maybe some CAD stuff.

Does any of you own a T430s with NVS 5200m and managed to find the correct proprietary nvidia driver for linux? I've already tried everything and every version seems to miss miss options in the configuration window.

What are the functions of the Security chip on the x220, should I enable it or disable it?

I did a fresh install of Arch, and it complains to me when it's inactive or disabled with "kvm disabled by bios" messages. I have not tried Active in the BIOS settings yet.

Should I activate it? Should I keep it Disabled and stop the error messages another way?

Xubuntu is a good transition to something lighter, get LXLE if you want a bit more minimalism & difficulty.

Wine also improved, additionally there is winetricks and play on linux to help you out with games/program compatibility. I needed PoL to install Photoshop CS6, at least it help eased to install it.

there is just a 0.2GHz difference in base clock and turboboost you are paying, no difference in cache... I am quite happy with my 2.6GHz T430s, but thats because it's FHD and I really don't do anything intensive other than inkscape and 30 tabs on chrome.

Bought my T430 in perfect condition last week but wasn't impressed with the viewing angles of the screen. So I bought an Alienware M14x HD+ screen for it. It already has an HD+ screen so I don't need the cable. Hopefully it will be easy to install, because I've never replaced a screen before.

Overall I love it. It came with the i7, 8GB, and the Nvidia graphics. Threw in a 240GB SSD and installed Manjaro OpenRC. No problems except had to hold back an update to elogind and libelogind.

My 2760p just arrived.
Comfy as fuck, and the battery according to Linux is at 100% of it's factory capacity (strange considering the manufacturing date is 2012).
And surprise surprise, it came with a badly connected gobi3000 wwan card. I connected it properly and it works like a charm.

$81 for a i5 2520p, 8gb of ram, 320gb hdd, Intel ac wlan, wwan and an excellent battery.

Fan sounds like a jet turbine under Linux though, although under win7 it's very quiet. The pc stays at 45 degrees or so in idle, with an ambient temperature of 30 degrees.

Power management, set it up and you'll likely see improvments. I had the same issue under Windows before I installed lenovo's power mamangent tool, which in turn also improved the battery life.

What should people be looking out for if they plan on upgrading most stuff? Like, I'm thinking about getting an X220, but I don't really know what I can't touch/what would be the most difficult to upgrade for beginners. For example, is upgrading the cpu harder than ram? I had T430 like a month ago and it was absolutely disgusting. Screen is the worst unit I've ever seen in my life. BIOS has restrictions that can be only removed by using a hardware spi flasher, using dGPU forces you to not use quad core cpu or set some low-end qc to 70% before loading any demanding program (or it will throttle and potentially shut down), quad core config without dGPU requires at least 90W and it still throttles during full load (recommended 135W for a docking station, while 2570p with i7-3840qm doesn't throttle even when using 65W PSU LMAO). Keyboard is fragile as fuck, it has to be immediately swapped with classic one, then it requires a lot of work to cut it perfectly or it will look bad in the palmrest. Fan is loud and ineffective, batteries are overpriced like twice and the highest model (94Wh) still uses 2800mAh 18650s, while 3400mAh is the standard since like 2014, dock station locks inflow vents so you can't gaym on it even when using egpu, or the cpu throttles. Slice battery is "dumb", you can only activate it with physical switch, main hdd bay is only 7mm, wifi antennas are pretty bad (wwan are ok), eGPU support is tragic, there is no egpu hotplug support, 16GB RAM doesn't work well with eGPU (causes 100% CPU use) unless fixed with modded bios via hardware flasher, you can't have 16GiB 2133MT/s RAM because lenovo decided to artifically limit qm77 chipset capabilities to CL13 (and there are only 2133MT/s CL11 sticks available on the market), fingerprint reader (the LKN4 one) is bugged, can be easily cheated, also scratches very quickly in daily use.

I moved it, unplugged and replugged it, as a result the display is still fucked. I guess I should do the same from the monitor side... I never dissassembled a laptop screen before, hope this isn't too tricky. I'll keep you informed.
