Well I just did it and it was a real pain in the ass and I don't have a disc drive, and their .isos don't work as bootable USBs so I had to rip the bios out of the ISO with some random tools you have to compile yourself and then added it to my grub manually.

Alright I've been trying to fix this for several days but I still can't figure this out

Goal:
-Set my W520 to run on the discrete quadro graphics only. No integrated. That's it.

What I've done:
-Bios settings are:
>Intergrated
>Discrete
>Nvidia Optimus

With an extra option of
-OS Detection for Nvidia Optimus (Enable/Disable)

Windows 10 boots fine with integrated and Optimus. The quadro card works perfectly with Optimus, passes stress test and everything.

I can boot into safe mode completely fine with the discrete graphics options.

I CANNOT boot normally with the discrete graphics. It hangs during the black spinning wheel.

I've tried a bunch of drivers and they all exhibit the same problem. I'm suspecting it's a software/Windows 10 issue.

Try Display Driver Uninstaller while in Optimus mode then rebooting into discrete only.

Make sure OS Detection is disabled; otherwise it will want to revert to Optimus if you try to boot an Optimus capable operating system.

A T430 cost $200 and a P51 cost $2000

P51 has a 4k IPS display
T430 has the worst panel in the history of laptops and it only supports a max of 1600x900 TN (which is also dogshit)

P51 has Maxwell graphics that can actually run shit
T430 has IGP or the abandoned EOL nvs graphics

The 3840QM also cost at least $150 and it'll throttle like hell. No you can't overclock it even with custom bios, the T430 doesn't support it.

Then there's years of IO difference like NVME and thunderbolt. The newest IO on the T430 is USB 3.

If the W541 would be enough for you, then get the W540 with a garbage CPU, and save hundreds of dollars by manually swapping the trackpad/CPU (literally the only difference between the two, and the W541 is far more expensive because idiot normies). Update on the Lenovo T430 I found at Goodwill.
I used Hirens to crack it open. It was a school computer with all the bullshit bloat schoolboards like to install on them.
Everything works fine except for the up arrow key on the keyboard. The Hard drive is pretty much in perfect shape. There was nothing of value on it so I wiped it.
Installed Mint on it mainly because I want to learn Linux.

OK well I havent actually used one yet, looking to upgrade from my X200s. But what I want is a ThinkPad that stays cool. The most intensive thing I would want to use it for is watching YouTube videos at 1600x900 or 1080p. Id like if it could do that without getting hot.

I have a feeling a ULV would be able to play 1080p YouTube videos fine, but please correct me if that isnt the case.

I also have a feeling that a standard voltage CPU, when playing 1080p YouTube videos, would run at one of its higher voltages thus running hot. Again, please correct me if this isnt the case

It looks like Quadro on Windows 10 is completely and utterly fucked.

Good news is that it works perfectly fine on Windows 7. Amazing in fact.

On Windows 10 with optimus I get about 12FPS on Overwatch. On W7 I consistently get over 50FPS, peaking around 70. The res is 1366x768 with 75% render scale. Super playable.

my only issue with CPU power is YouTube videos. My X200s has a 1.867 GHz Core2 Duo, but gets very hot watching even just 240p and 360p videos.

Well, the T400 has the ultrabay, which allows you to trade the optical drive for another HDD/SSD, so you got that.
I didn't list them, but I remember some HP EliteBook models having two HDD bays, so you might also consider them.
8440, 8460 and 8470, either with a "p" or with a "w" at the end should be good, although I think the two HDD bays were in the "w" models...
You could also take a look at the Dell Latitudes. Starting with E6400 and up.

The T400 will work just as well as the T420 except for battery life and the iGPU. I use a T400 with a fully disabled Intel ME and Coreboot as one of my main computers. Coreboot is better than Libreboot because it still lets you run non-free binaries if you want so that your hardware works. It also lets you easily add SeaBIOS as a payload. Best way is to install Coreboot with the SeaBIOS payload and then let it boot GRUB from disk.

Something that you should know about the ME is that it isn't spying on you. It's made for big businesses to manage shitloads of computers at once. ME Cleaner will not disable the Intel ME, but will minimize attack surface by stripping it of things that you as a home user will never need, such as the ME's networking capabilities and the ability to access your hard drives/RAM. Don't be afraid to let the ME do hardware init though, because that's what it should be doing.

EFI is the problem, since the manufacturers can just shove whatever they want in that, including malware. Coreboot takes care of that.
