Linus confirms X299 launch will be a mess

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

tl;dr the 14,16, and 18 core CPUs were a rushed, knee-jerk reaction to AMD's 16 core Threadripper, and that motherboard makers don't know how they're going to support so many options. It's going to be a buggy mess at launch. If you were thinking of getting one at launch, I'd hold off for a bit.

Will it be the right socket ?

my own tl;dr

Motherboard manufacturers need a standard to build their products around.

Intel is throwing a bunch of high core count cpus at the new platform that each have different standards.

meaning, motherboard manufacturers are either gonna have to build specific motherboards for Lesser CPUs or sell high priced motherboards with Features that cant be utilized by most of the cpus of that platform.

It's very similar to the (admittedly simple) strategy that drug addicts use when they come into hospitals or pharmacies and simulate phantom pain.
They try to score prescription painkillers or even pharmaceutical amphetamines by pretending to not want painkillers and only "giving in" when doctors are unable to diagnose their (non-existent) ailment.
Some will see it as a sign of trust while their goal is the very opposite.

Intel really needs to stop funding diversity garbage and get their shit together. Zen is already amazing in how it scales and AMD is having amazing yields. In this case the choice in CPU will determine the number of RAM slots that can be used, the number of PCI lanes available in huge ways.

If they make a motherboard with three PCI-e m.2 connectors and two full speed 16x PCI-e slots, plus a couple more PCI-e slots, some of the compatible processors for the socket will have enough PCI-e lanes to cover them and others won't, yet they have to make the board compatible with all of the processors.

The board might have eight DIMM slots, but with some of the compatible processors you can only use four of them.

If you spend on an expensive processor and cheap out on the mobo then you will probably lose half the features of the processor, and if you spend on an expensive mobo and cheap out on the processor then you will miss out on half the features of the mobo.

People will have to do a lot of reading and matching features before making purchases again, and that is pretty silly.

I don't see how it's the motherboard manufacturers fault on this issue.

The CPUs are so fractured in capability, that the only thing they can do is offer motherboards built for specific processor groups. That is just shitty and consumes factory space instead of making one size fits all.

PCIe lanes are identical at 44 on the higher-end SKUs (7940X+) Intel prepared specifically for Ryzen.
It's the lower-end (7820X-), that would have come regardless of whether Ryzen was a success, that are causing the headaches for motherboard manufacturers.
This mess was coming irrespective of Threadripper.

Intel seems to have really managed to fuck it up this time around with X299. Not only is the platform a fucking mess, but it's overpriced to all fuck as well. I bet AMD's cheapest 10C Threadripper is going to be in the $500-600 range and you'll get the full 64 PCIe lanes with quad channel support, meanwhile Intel wants to sell a 28 lane 8C CPU for $600 and asks for a whopping $1000 for 10C with 44 lanes. Intel's $600 CPU can't even fully feed 2 graphics cards even before you consider other shit like NVMe, what the fuck?

>>
>>60732492

And then you look at this and realize their "massive advantage" is a drop in the bucket.
>>
>>60733525
No. The 44 lanes allow for the maximum amount of possibilities regarding lane allocation.
When you have fewer, the "if-then"clauses start appearing. And that's the issue. It's a problem affecting the 7820X and below. SKUs that weren't created to respond to Ryzen.

Worth it compared to what? I wouldn't say Kaby Lake is worth it if you already have a remotely recent Intel quad core, I wouldn't even consider it if you have anything Haswell or newer. The limited extra performance just isn't worth the large sum required to do a full platform upgrade (CPU, mobo, DDR4 RAM).

If you have something really old, it may be worth considering, but I still see no reason to buy Kaby Lake X. Even if it clocks 200MHz higher, that won't really bring you anything at all in practice and comes with a more expensive motherboard with features you cannot use along with actually *losing* certain things mainstream Kaby Lake has, like the iGPU which can be useful either as an emergency contingent but also to drive multiple monitors, or for QuickSync or for VMs with GPU passthrough. There's just no way that Kaby Lake X makes any sense at all, if you want Kaby just buy the mainstream platform on Z270.

Mobo makers prefer not having to use every last CPU PCIe lane for AIB slots, since running lanes directly from the socket to various back-panel IO port controllers is a ton easier than burying PCIe 2.0 lanes all the way from the chipset under the slot lanes to the back.

But when one socket standards has to deal with CPUs with between 16 and 44 on-die lanes, they have to start making unpleasant compromises or accommodate the least common denominator.

SKL-X is shaping up to be a complete shit-show.

not even that interested in how the intel processors will perform. seems pretty much like more broadwell-e ding-bus'd together on 14nm. putting SoC features up as unlockable pretty much makes its presence negligible (and the fact that they're locking it to Intel SSDs is pathetic). really strange platform overall, ryzen/threadripper/ebyn are all pretty clearly targeted whereas i9/i7/i5/i3 now is choppy gradient, and bleeds heavily into the xeon segment. x299 having mixed dual/quad channel support, some pcie lanes cut off (some m2 won't be working some pcie slots cut off, blah blah blah) and the fact that IGP is also beaned on KL-X is going to make adoption a huge pain.

threadripper/ebyn will be very interesting.
>>
Then again my Supermicro server board requires a key if you want to update the BIOS via IPMI or configure the raid interface!
>>
>>60735882
The higher end CPU's are just LGA3647 Xeons that have quad channel memory on the LGA2066 socket. What really shocked me is that you can only use Intel PCIe SSD's for this new key option. I am sure someone will figure out how to crack that technology, and make it work with non Intel PCIe SSD's for CPU lane boot up in RAID 1, 5 or 10.

Overclocking = getting more throughput for your money.
Watercooling = Keeping the system cool.

I don't know what else to tell you.
>>
>>60739061
>Overclocking = getting more throughput for your money.
You might want to do your monetary math a do-over because the system for overlocking in this case required cooling expenditures where you could have bought additional servers and/or components equating to more calculation power than what overclocking would get you.
>>
>>60739074
In large server farms. But yes, >>60739061 is a fucking retard for defending it.
And only mild tweaks for 'personal'
>>
>>60739118
It's not only cooling expenditures.

But you would also not have to calculate amortization decrease (hardware life expectancy shortening whether documented or state prescribed for financial records) if you just bought more hardware for the same money that would be wasted cooling to overclock.

Overclocking is really only good for home use and small-case situations. The whole watercooling thing was stupid. Amusing, but damn facepalm level stupid.

Honest money is the toughest to get.

No. I am the one who said that i could use my education to get far more money than Linus, and also endless better looking pussy, if i decided to just to into the business of taking advantage of other people and went full-illegal (thought that's relative to some states/countries these days).

But i prefer never taking advantage of others, and doing everything legit and respectably.

The guy arguing me though thinks that money is all that matters, ergo methods and honesty don't, such that someone should be jealous for being legit over someone taking advantage of people for money.
>>
>>60732545
gluing cpus is old and it always worked, intel used to glue 2 c2d into c2q and those were amazing, amd went 1 up and these cpus even communicate via IF, its no suprise INTEL is getting buttblasted, they didnt expect AMD to adopt this old design and improve it and totally smash them.
>>

How does he take advantage of people?

By any measurable metrics he's objectively more successful than you.

The reasoning that you could be more successful than him by crimmitting crimes and that those crimes are the equivalent to him "making youtube videos" is hilarious.

Linus looks like Machine Gun Kelly
>>
>>60742769
>How does he take advantage of people?
He deceives and lies people for money. Banking on their lack of knowledge primarily.
He is not successful by any measure since he doesn't make money with a clear conscience and he takes advantage of people for it.

>The reasoning that you could be more successful than him by crimmitting crimes
Again, in this day illegal substances are getting legalized in countries so it's still relative on whether i would be a criminal.

If you say success by any measure, then i can be far more successful than Linus if i decided to throw principle out of the window.

The core of this discussion is that I have a clear conscience in how i make money, as i don't deceive, lie, or take advantage of people, ergo i have no reason to be jealous of Linus.
Are you jealous of criminals having more money and being more successful than you?
Because that's what you are arguing, that one should be jealous of other people irrespective of their methods. I say that's stupid.
>>
>>60732237
wait wasnt he an nvdia shill ?
>>
>>60742866
>i have no reason to be jealous of Linus
i mean you sound pretty jealous
>>
>>60742877
Whatever he's selling, he's shilling.
>>
>>60742911
I don't take advantage of kids and the less knowledgeable to make money.
If you believe someone should be jealous for not being a sociopath and stooping to that level, then that says more about you than me.
I stand by principles.
>>
>>60742949
i'm not saying you should or shouldn't be jealous

i'm just saying you sound jealous

like really jealous
>>
>>60739391
thank you
>>
>>60742961
I make legit money without taking advantage of others, and my career can only go up over the years, even way over the level of Linus if i take it into the area of management.

The only reason we are having this discussion is because i am questioning your morals and mindsets when it comes to jealousy and what levels you take to in order to perceive it.
>>
>>60742840
if you bought a kaby lake housefire think again, 2 years tops before those chips start to cook themselves
>>
>>60743033
i mean you sure put a lot of effort into proving how not jealous you are of someone more successful than you

really sounds like the type of thing someone who isn't jealous would do
>>
>>60732341
What is the point of both the i7-7740X and i5-7640X.

What use case is there for a HEDT 4c/4t and 4c/8t with no extra PCIE lanes?
>>
>>60743090
Only thing I've seen is that you buy the crappy ones first then upgrade to the expensive ones later. Which seems kind of pointless.
>>
>>60743074
How is he more successful if he takes advantage of other people for it and loses respect in the eyes of others?

If he was making all that money by legitimate knowledge and not taking advantage of people, i'd be jealous; however he isn't.

There is someone who i am jealous of, Steve Wozniak for example. Or Notch. Or may other examples.
>>
>>60743235
That makes no sense for the HEDT market at all. People who buy into it are fucking whales that drop 5k at a clip.
>>
>>60743240
>may other examples
And Linus
>>
>>60743335
but that's the one he's most not jealous of at all
>>
>>60732459
he does run a business. his chink wife is rich and he is pissy away her money. it is quite different from a business. even a venture capital backed startup pisses away money trying to develop a product, this guy cant even setup a switch.

>>
>>60743335
Linus takes advantage of people for money and doesn't get it by skill though?
Wozniak made a computer and programs.
Notch is a programmer.
Many others have skill-sets that made them rich and successful.

Linus takes advantage of kids and less knowledgeable.

If i was a criminal and made more money, you would say i was more successful.
I'd still disagree with your because it's not honest success, it's taking advantage of others.
>>
>>60743805
Linus is naturally talented.
>>
>>60743856
In taking advantage of kids and the less knowledgeable, just like many frauds are.

Thankfully this board is called "Technology" and not "Business", and we prefer people who get successful from tech skills and not fraud.
So you are the cancer on this board i guess?
>>
Guys...

Statham is the answer.
But Linus has a ratty face and looks like an atrophied faggot, so there is no help for him.
>>
>>60743805
But marketing is in no way a criminal activity, moreover it's one of the pillars of any business. The entrepreneurship is what made the West rich and attractive, and allowed you not to rot in your Slav shithole but to boast about your successful and "pure" career.
>>
>>60743982
>>60743997
>>
>>60744020
Taking advantage of people is not criminal in many cases. Still doesn't change the fact that it's taking advantage, and worse when it is taking advantage of kids.

You think the law is the final say on principle and morals, what would you have argued then when slavery was not criminal and was perfectly legal?
>>
>>60744020
>people used to do stupid shit to make you rich, so you shouldn't strive to make riches by doing better than them and not being a shit person at the same time
You need a psychologist m8.

False advertising is a criminal offense.
It's just that the Internet hasn't yet kept up with the material economics when it comes to quality standards and economic regulation.
>>
>>60744059
I bet you're employed by some capitalist sharks that used and continue to use any opportunity to take advantage of people and maybe also kids and yet you dare to virtue signal here saying how you're not a part of all this.
>>
>>60744230
I'm not though, and i don't.
The studies i finished enable me to create new wealth for society as a whole, through production.

Linus on the other hands doesn't create new wealth for society as a whole, he shifts existing wealth, and he takes advantage of children and the less knowledgeable to do it.

You are bad at this.

dude i barely even know who linus is, i just find it hilarious how hard you're trying to prove you aren't jealous of him

like if you wanna jack off over how not jealous you are go ahead, you don't have to drag us into it lmao
>>
>>60744367
I don't know how to define a person who entertains the thought that taking advantage of kids and less knowledgeable people should be an object of jealousy, except as cancer. I'm not even saying this ironically, it truly does make you cancer as a person.

Shady marketing practice. AMD is deliberately using the B350 and X399 nomenclature for their chipsets to deceive the public into believing that their chipsets represents the latest generation Intel technologies and features.

amd is making a big mistake by pricing their HEDT too low, a normal consumer will buy a 4-8 core cpu, HEDT is incredibly niche, amd is cannibalizing itself business wise yet again

TR competes with nothing in AMD's lineup, they're not cannibalizing anything
