>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good for higher FPS; may have heat issues
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper/i9 - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050/Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA)
>1070 - 1080p@90-144hz/1440p@100+hz
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings
>Freesync2 & Vega soon

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>Go mATX form factor for cheaper board+case
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>>
okay I have started building my PC but noticed that I do not see anything that can read CDs. I thought one is included with the case or the motherboard. how fucked am I? because I need one to install windows, right
>>
What's the current best AIO?
>>
>>60691062
You can install windows from a usb stick

Hey guys, I'm building a PC for the first time, and I just wanna make sure that this build is fine. Any recommendations on what I can swap out to make it cheaper and keep the same performance?
>>
>>60691078
don't get a founders edition especially in hell on earth australia.
>>
>>60691099
that all in one heatsink is garbage tier, take that money and put it on a good air heatsink, for like $5 more you can get 3200mhz ram, 850 evo is a waste of money go for any other brand. 700w is overkill, 650w is the max i'd recommend.
>>
>>60691097
Recommendations? I'm still 2 or 3 months away from building.

>>60691100
God damn it, I overhauled this build coz everyone was telling me to cut costs elsewhere to put that in there.
>>
>>60691143
The 1080 ti itsself is amazingly good, but founders edition refers to the way it's cooled. Get a different cooling configuration like an ASUS Strix, Aorus, EVGA SC3/FTW3, etc.
>>
>>60691073
well windows came in a CD

but I will get to it later. if necessary I can buy one in a store or take the CD reader from my old pc
>>
>>60691157
>EVGA FTW
They had fire problems. And the VRM thermal pads are still? optional extras.
>>
>>60691166
You literally unironically bought retail Windows?

Man, you wasted over 70 dollars, for absolutely no reason.
>>
>>60691166
You can make an USB installer with a tool from microsoft

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
>>
>>60691157
Fair enough, but I chose that one for the price. IS the difference in cooling worth a couple/few hundred more dingo dollars?
>>
>>60691117
What would you recommend for the heatsink?
>>
>>60691191
It's not hundreds it's like $50 max what the fuck.

And yes, it is. Blower cards are loud as fuck, hot as fuck, and just shitty as fuck, even if they look coolest.

>>
>>60691224
Keys online are $25, "not being poor" isn't an excuse to piss money away for no reason

>>60691227
EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB SC Black Edition Video Card is only $60 or $80 more.

>>60691270
That is a good heatsink, just be aware its huge.

You cropped out all the prices and are doing images instead of just linking the list but if the Z270-A from ASUS is cheaper, consider that. I'd look at the mx300 or the _400 series from Kingston for the SSD if the prices are comparable. (avoid v300 like the plague from Kingston)
>>
I'm wondering if there are going to be new offers during summer or if I should just go for it and buy the rest of my parts for my PC. Missing

>>
>>60691315

I think everything's fine on this list. The case fits the CPU cooler fine.
>>
>>60691197
Get a Be Quiet, like dark rock 3.

Anyway, >>60691099 why 7700K?
>>
>>60691448
Everyone just recommended it to me and I have money to blow.
>>
>>60691440
Do you need Wi-fi+Blue tooth integration? Otherwise, the E is a waste of money over the A.

Also, as it turns out that SSD is bad so I switched it for one that's $10 more

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PYWfgL

This is what it looks like as Z270-A, just switch the mobo back if you want.
>>
>>60691471
Purely gamin is fine. but you want a system that'll last, grab an 1600X and learn to overclock.
I'm guessing you were planning on running the 7700K at stock, even tho it's an unlocked chip you par more for.
>>
so i went all out and got an evga supernova g2 750w just for the peace of mind.
Everything else that was available here had bad reviews and everyone here saying "don't cheap out on a psu"

is there any disadvantage on a psu that is obviously more than i needed apart from electricity bills?
>>
>>60691505
he should get 1600, not 1600X, there's no point in getting 1600X over 1600 if you're gonna overclock anyway.
>>
>>60691505
But if*
pay more for*
>>
>>60691517
Not true, as a small number of non x chips aren't capable of overclocking to match it. It's insurance, plus he may want a better heatsink regardless.
>>
>>60691517
They're binned better, giving greater chance at winning the silicon lotto.
He's got extra cash he want to burn, not really a bad place to skimp.
>>
>>60691315
Alright, you're starting to win me over on the open air cooling. Do you think this case I've chosen is ventilated enough though?
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/N7nG3C/cooler-master-cm-590-iii-black-atx-mid-tower-case-rc-593-kwn2
>>
>>60691546
It looks like you're skimping on the case a bit too much, I'd double your case budget considering how little you're spending. Not my area of expertise, but a case that cheap is usually so for a reason.
>>
>>60691505
I was probably just planning on running it at stock, yeah. I could probably pick up a bit on overclocking, but do you think it's worth the $100 difference?
>>
Will Zen 3 still be on AM4? I'm a poorfag who wants to build an entry level workstation/gaymen PC and I want to get at least the 1600 but preferably the 1700, but I'm thinking about saving some dosh and just get the 1400 first since I'm using a a ThinkPad X230 as my main PC so pretty much any quad core desktop CPU will be better than the one I have right now.

Then I can just sell the 1400 and get an 8 core when Zen 2 comes out, but if Zen 3 is the same platform then I might as well wait for that.
>>
>>60691518
>>60691505
>>60691630
You're not just paying for it to be unlocked, it comes with significantly higher clock speeds than the 7700.
>>
Update on my monitor problem, I have a "No Signal" error when I try to boot up my newly built PC. I've tested
>HDMI cable works on my current system
>tried both hdmi ports on my new system (the one on the gpu and the one on the motherboard)
>removing the gpu and only using the motherboard
>reseating ram as well as moving it's position
>holding the power button for a minute when everything is off
>checking all the fans to make sure they were working
Next up I'm trying to get a VGA and DVI cable to see if I can get display with that. might buy a dvi to vga adaptor too.
>>
>>60691653
I think that's the plan, but watch it require a new chipset anyways. I doubt anyone would want to buy a used 1400 desu
>>
>>60691671
Meh, I'm fine with just getting $50-75 for it so I can make some money back
>>
>>60691630
Aussi bucks?
Should be closer than that USD. Unless you take into account adding a cooler. That a 1600X does not come with.
1600 is fine for overclocking with the stock cooler it comes with. Many people buying other chips would happily pay for them.

The 1600X doesn't increase your chances of reaching extra high clocs so much to justify the cost. Unless you can find it for no more than $30-$50 Australian depending on personal wealth.
>>
>>60691506
anyone?
>>
>>60691506
No, and there isn't even an impact on your electricity bills, you're not understanding how a PSU works at the most fundamental level. It only uses the power that your components use. a 750w may have a lot overhead, but depending on the efficiency curve of the unit it could actually be using less power than one that has less overhead.
>>
>>60691506
Lekky bills won't be that different with a large PSU. Only a concern for server farms.
No obvious disadvantage than paying more for the headroom you won't use.
>>
>>60691715
>overhead
I meant headroom
>>
>>60691715
>It only uses the power that your components use
Not quite true. Components are on standby. Ready to deliver power. But not a concern, just pointing it out for accuracy.
>>
>>60691715
>>60691726
okay that's good to know, it came with a 10 year warranty anyways so i can easily use it for 10 years right?
>>
>>60691753
Assuming EVGA doesn't go defunct/power standards radically change/you lose your warranty info yeah, I guess technically.
>>
>>60691753
Oh, you can also use the extra headroom to power car stereo components.
>>
>>60691665
Please respond what else can I try? Or is the GPU just fucked? I don't have onboard graphics.
>>
might be a ram issue. Try using 1 stick and see if it boots. I had the same problem the other day and it turned out one of my 4gb sticks was faulty
>>
>>60691805
Try another GPU. You may even be inclined to take it to a shop if you and your friends don't have one spare.
Cost me $50 roo bucks when it happened to me.
>>
>>60691919
>>60691918
Will do after I get my cables, I need them anyways. I'll try these last three things and if it doesn't work I'll cry myself to sleep. 1300$ down the drain.
>>
>>60691954
>1300$ down the drain.
That's what warranties and RMA's are for.
>>
>>60691954
Not down the drain, just a delay. If you take it to a shop, don't forget for them to write officially the card/mobo is DOA. That should make RMA much smoother.
>>
i have no experience with ssds. i was looking at samsung 850 evo and adata su700. are any of those good, or do you recommend anything else?
>>
>>60692044
Kingston UV400. Cheep and performs very well.
Sandisk I hear is great.
Yours are great too.

From UV400 to EVO you're looking at a few second difference in load times. You really can't go wrong with SSD's.
Unless you get too little space.
I recommend 240-500gb for games in a mid tier build.
1tb for top.
120 for purely OS and programs in a budget+ build, with a hybrid HDD (A small SSD in a HDD that saves commonly used files to it to boost speeds)
>>
>>60692044
850 evo is significantly better.

If the adata/mx300 is a fair bit cheaper than the 850 evo, just go with the cheaper alternative.
>>

Hey /g/ents. I wanna build a cheap 1080p/60fps machine for occasional single player vidya and dat quake champions and titanfall 2 etc.
Is ryzen 1400+rx560 a good combo?
Were I live rx560 and gtx1050ti are priced around 130 Eur, rx570 is 200 at it's cheapest if I can even find one.
>>
>>60692220
Best advice I can give is to go to a furniture store, and sit as various desks and imagine your system on it. Also take a notepad and a tape measure to take note of leg room and table space, then when your home, buy online the same or similar for 1/3rd the price.

Laminated wood is better than laminated chip board.
Flat packs are easy to construct. But take not you don't put non laminated sides facing outwards.
>>
>>60692322
I'm really conflicted about straight desk vs L desk and keyboard tray vs no

I've historically always had L desks. I like the space. But I also have a bad habit of cluttering it up. Do you guys have any opinions?

Also, keyboard trays. I've always liked them for the same reason--more desk space. But I also find that they tend to get a little warped over time, meaning eventually they start to slide and catch, and generally just be annoying. Are they more trouble than they're worth?
>>
>try to find an AMD motherboard for my ryzen on amazon
>they a have shit reviews
Why
>>
>>60692358
Keyboard trays are cancer.
>>
>>60692387
Why do you feel that way, anon?
>>
>>60692262
Coin flip on the GPU. Aim for a 1500X if in budget.
Will do most things, so long as you're not on ultra settings.
Ultra is more meant for presentations. Where you'd use massive anti aliasing to upscale to 8K for projection.
>>60692358
I personally want a corner desk. For multi screen setup. But with shelving. Tray's can go fuck themselves if you use the PC often. As yes, they don't last on cheaper desks.

L is very good if you do handwriting often/have it in your bedroom, so you can set the TV on it. and still have a multi monitor set up in the corner of it.

For anti clutter there is no cure.
>>
>>60692262
gtx 1050 ti is flat out better than rx 560 (except doom 3 with vulcan).

RX 570 is the minimum for higher graphics settings though, and you really may want to consider 8gb, if you're not planing to get a new graphics card in a year (however, at that price point you may be just about the same price point as RX 580 8gb... the pricing is pretty weird).

Go with r5 1500X instead, it comes with a better cooler, so you can overclock it further without having to buy a new cooler. The 1400 won't allow you to overclock without running into thermal issues.

If you know that quake champions and titanfall 2 can run on your desired settings, in 1080@60hz, then go for it, I guess.
>>
>>60691270
>7700k
no, no it doesn't
>>
>>60692465
CPU really isn't really affected by graphics settings, there are only a few settings that will increase CPU usage.
>>
>>60692402
Non that anon but you kind of answered your own question.
>they tend to get a little warped over time, meaning eventually they start to slide and catch, and generally just be annoying

Plus it's hard to get aesthetic gainz from them.
>>
>>60692465
>But with shelving
I was planning on a getting a very minimal desk, no matter what, and getting some shelving to hang on the wall, or slide underneath the desk separately.

And yeah, this is basically a home office, room all to myself, so space isn't a big concern.
>>
>>60691270
You're looking at almost 200$ less money if you go for with r5 1600 + H7/Dark rock 3/Shadow Rock 2.
With that money you can get a GTX 1080, or save the money for when you buy a new screen (although sucks with nvidia, because the gsync tax is pretty much $200).
>>
>>60692491
True, just a suggestion because often once people have a PC they think of more things than pure gaming to do with it. So it doesn't hurt to go up a CPU tier.
Especially in the low end builds.
You're pretty solid thus far.
Note* the 1500x also comes with a cooler.
>>
>>60692552
A CEO desk might be more your style. Gets you off the wall and into a prominent position in the room.
Bit of a moral boost. Unless you've got a sweet view out a window.
>>
>>60692573
Yeah, I think the cooler is the biggest deal, allows you to overclock to around 3,7/3.8ghz, without needing to buy a new cooler.
I don't know how much the extra 8mb cache per CCX does.
>>
>>60692465
>>60692477
Thanks. I might upgrade the card in a couple of years, so no biggie. Also, isn't it worth it to buy 1400 and oc it, because I wanted to buy an aftermarket cooler regardless? Or 1500x is flatout better in every way, including oc ?
>>
>>60692609
Nah man, I've got way too many cables to hide for that.

And the blinds on my windows are closed most of the time anyway :^)

Besides, I wanna do some backlighting/underlighting, so a wall is a must.
>>
7700K + 1070
What kind of monitor should I buy? One with Gsync? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_G-Sync
A freesync one? Whatever?

I'm sort of lost to be honest. I built my rig not long ago but still kept my old VGA Asus 1080p monitor. While it's still more than fine for most stuff I do, I get screen tearing issues and such on a few AAA titles because it my PC is too fast for it (even with vsync on sometimes, yeah).
Looking for suggestions. Either 1080p or 1440p are fine. Not interested in 4K.
>>
>>60692626
>extra 8mb cache
More programs than games if history remains true. There used to be clerons with no L2 that performed better in games because of it. Might have been due to not having extra heat from it tho. Allowing higher clocks.
>>60692638
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-1500X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-1400/3921vs3922
Marginally better clocking. This comes sown to X variants being higher binned chips.
> I wanted to buy an aftermarket cooler regardless
1500X comes with the Wraith Spire 95W Cooler
More than enough to get clocks with. And doesn't look like shit.
1400 comes with the Wraith Stealth 65W
Still fine for the job. But will make slightly more noise with greater fan speed required.

So it depends on the price of the cooler you have in mind, if it plus the 1400 costs more than the 1500X alone, it's not worth it-ish.

change the ram. You'll want a 2x4gb kit to make use of dual channel. Also 2133 is really slow ram. For Ryzen, you want 2666mhz or better.
Then add a 120GB 2.5" SSD for around $50
Then choose a case to put it all in.

are you guys sure it's good to recommend r5 1600 for "high fps gaming" and mixed use when looking at game benchmarks it's 40fps slower than 7700k and even beat by haswell like i5 4690k?

it's weird i try to look for benchmarks so i could choose whether i want a r5 1600, r7 1700 or 7700k and the few game benchmarks you find between all the cinebench results where ryzen obviously shines, you either see 7700k beat 1800x by 40fps (170 vs130fps - big difference!) and 1600/1700 aren't even included in the list, and you find some benchmarks where 1700 and 7700k are toe to toe, even for the same game

i really don't know what to do, i really want ryzen for multithreading use but i really don't know what to think of the gaming results

also i can't really find anything where all 3 ryzens are included in (gaming) benchmarks to see if they have any difference in gaming, the one benchmark where r5 1600 and r7 1700 are included 1700 is barely a frame or two faster

are (older (the majority)) ryzen benchmarks just hindered by lack of optimised bios/ram etc?

how much difference is there actually between r5 1600 and i5 7600k (in gaming)? sometimes they're close, sometimes miles apart

>2 hours to oc Pascal

It took me literally 5 minutes to oc my 1070. I just stuck an extra 200 mhz to the stock core and 300 to the memory and it was good to go. As long as you increase the core frequency to where it will boost (in-game boost) to at least 2ghz, gpu boost 3 will automatically fluctuate between 2 and 2.1 ghz itself so all you have to do is get it within a ballpark boost of 2.0 and 2.1 ghz core.

I might try pushing my memory to 9gbps later on today for the sake of it. I'm pretty sure that most 1070 with micron memory can hit 9gbps

The biggest pain in the arse, id that Ryzen being new and having numinous fixes happen. There's so many 'missleading' benches. Just mainly due to not being re taken after fixes. No real malicious intent.

Was brought up in the previous thread. >>60690590
Follow the archive link, and search for 'go away IMG_"
It's often the quickest way to find up to date benches. As they're being used to cause mental anguish to a certain user.
>>
>>60692990
Hardware unboxed over youtube has made all sorts of R5 tests, some against i5s if you're interested, and his tests are all up to date.
This made me decide to go for Ryzen for the PC I'm building for my sibling. It's just that good compared to i5s.

Now regarding the 7700k I'm not sure (and I have a 7700k myself), but as anon said you probably want to wait to see how these new Intel CPUs fare and get benchmarked to see whether they're worth getting over Ryzen or not.
>>
>>60692990
The reason Ryzen is so often recommended is because it's more practical for most gamers. You're likely not going to notice a 10 fps loss, but you will notice when things stutter less. All those benchmarks are done with fresh, clean windows installs with nothing in the background. IRL, you'll likely have Discord and a few browser tabs open as well. The i5 7600k and i7 7700k will see CPU usage spikes of 100% which leads to stuttering.
The R5 1600, has 6 cores and 12 threads, and never goes above 60% useage in games leaving plenty of processing power to run discord and a few browser tabs at the same time.
>>
>>60693060
Get faster RAM at the very least, that is VERY slow for Ryzen. Ram prices don't increase much as speed goes up, it's 100% worth it.
>>
>>60693060
at least get 2666mhz or faster ram then. fast ram makes a HUGE difference on Ryzen.
>>
>>60693114
>i7 7700k will see CPU usage spikes of 100%
lol, don't spout shit like this.
>>
>>60693090
I was running more than one bench, and going for absolute max. not so much just slapping in numbers within the known averages.
Should be about that amount of time for a beginner to get things in order. With rechecking the guide, downloads and benching.
>>
>>60692990
The 7700k is the best gaming CPU, of course it's gonna have higher FPS than other CPUs (though 40? unless you're at already 140+FPS with the R5, that's not happening), but it doesn't mean every single other CPU is shit.
An R5 1600 is between an i5 & i7 in gaming: average framerate of i5 but with more threads & cores so it doesn't suffer from FPS dips, and most importantly can reach quite higher FPS using higher clocked RAM and by overclocking.

>even beat by haswell like i5 4690k?
In static pictures benchmarks indeed, but if you look at benchmarks instead (as in recording of the benchmark) then it's not at all what is happening.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBKHsMar1Jo
https://youtu.be/JypkqwpOtNI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6Ovmxfejvo
Matches the 6600/7600(k) but with more room left.

There's also updates that improved performance indeed.

>>
>>60693163
An i5 already has spikes to 100% usage in gayming on fresh windows install / bench stations, of course every single software in the background is going to make this worse

What d'yall think of this here little Zen build?

I tried to find a balance between 1337gamur and a more productivity based adult machine for mainly Ableton and Adobe applications.

I already have storage but may add an M.2

In the future may get a a second screen the likes of a 1920x1080 TN or something similar as my alternative for that quick response FPS shit. Otherwise I tend to play RPGs and other shit where i prefer the pretty visuals.

Don't hate on my overpriced meme keyboard choice, thx.

Thing is with Pascal though is that it never seems to max. Like for example my oc puts my in game boost at 2.08ghz based on calculation but when I'm actually in game it generally drops to 2.03 or 2.05ghz. I think it's something to do with the gpu boost voltage control.

With my old 980 (which broke) if overclocked, the gpu would stick to that boost clock 24/7 whereas pascal doesn't do that hence why I said all you need is a ballpark oc between 2.0 and 2.1 ghz since the gpu will do the the rest itself.

But yeah if you want to be perfect about it then it can take that long

The i9 lineups is HEDT & not for him & the 7740k is just a 7700k with iGPU disabled and 100MHz higher BASE clock (boost clock identical)
It's completely worthless to him
>>

I just get real paranoid about not having the option to SLI it up in the future, you know? Its like opting for the house with a bigger garden. Then again I don't really know where the point is that going SLI is a better option than getting the next best single card. Also those goddamn 'muh cool LEDs' keep ensnaring my simple mind.

I have an old GTX670 that still holds up well so I was going to hold off on the GPU to see what comes about with Vega, whether its an interesting GPU or for the price drop on Nvidia cards - good idea?

What do you guys think is a good PSU alternative? I generally hear seasonic is top-tier and I really like the idea of those higher 80plus standards for the efficiency payoff, but wonder if its worth the up-front cost.

That sounds like freezes to me which is much worse than stutters, and the fact that this thing can happen on a $220+ CPU is quite disappointing.
And again, just because you don't notice stutter doesn't mean it's not there. I didn't notice stutter on my $50 g1840 even when playing GTA V (i did notice the freezes though), and yet when i switched to an R7 1700 i saw a massive improvement in smoothness

no my games do this a lot because my hdd is dying. it's a common problem in gta 5 with older hdd's. it causes momentary stutter because of 100% disk usage because for some reason the game must be reloading in all the assets. after a second it goes away and its back to smooth sailing.

https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/203363418-GTA-V-PC-Stutter-FPS-drop-linked-with-large-amount-of-hard-disk-usage

as you can see there is basically no stutter whatsoever when you look at 100% disk usage and the spikes in frametime. the spikes are if you die and it reloads at the hospital, if you blow up a bunch of cars or if you get a phone call (for some retarded reason). the first spike was when i got a call from martin madrazo and it spiked for whatever reason. probably my hdd fucking up once again. either way all the people claiming that my i5 is a stutterfest if i have discord or more than one tab open and that i HAVE to upgrade to a 6 core ryzen 5 is a lie.

Newbie question. I bought the non-window version of the Corsair 270R so it only came with one fan, situated at the back for exhaust.
I bought 2 more 120mm fans for air intake at the front. There's space 3 of them - one of them will be in the middle slot. For the last one does it matter if I place it in the top or bottom position? I assume bottom as I want cold air coming from the bottom of the case right?

What is this, 2011? SSDs are not optional unless you're spending under $500 total, and NVMe drives are objectively the most powerful SSDs on the market, and not significantly more expensive.

If you have an NVMe capable processor and motherboard, there are no good reasons to not pay $20-30 more for a drive with 1,000% higher diskmark scores.

I get that you, personally, have a problem with NVMe, but that is an OPINION, and it's a shitty stupid one to boot. Stop repeating it like it's a fact.
>>
>>60693895
Does not matter. Unless the case goes into a pigeon hole. Then you want lower to avoid sucking in air from your exhaust coming back around. .
Generally as long as air is moving it's fine. You RAM is up the top, and your GPU has it's own fans.

Didn't connect power to the GPU
Got incompatible RAM
Connected display to motherboard video out on a system without an iGPU
Some sort of fan related issue, my friend once got a motherboard that refused to start up if a fan wasn't connected to the CPU fan header
Those are all the things i can think of, you GPU, mobo, RAM or even PSU could just be broken too, sometimes a fault in a network card or drive can also cause boot issues. I once had a computer stuck in a boot loop because a PCI dial up modem i never used was broken. This is computers, welcome to hell.

I did, I used both those and the red ones. They work in the bios and the screen where i decide for safe mode or normal mode. But they stop working once windows loads up. I tried the normal safe mode and normal mode but haven't touched the bios. I also haven't tried safe mode with command prompt or safe mode with networking. I'm going to take a look at this >>60695218

Wait a minute. If they work in the bios doesn't that mean that they do have drivers installed already? Why does it stop working once I go into the windows login?
>>
>>60695493
It's windows that's lacking the drivers for it, hence why it stops when you get to windows.
>>
>>60695449
If that's a sale then go for it.
Prices aren't going to drop, prices never actually drop on computer parts. They only go down a bit after launch, but if you buy the CPU 2 years from now, it'll still be the same price as it is today.
>>
>>60695493
Because your bios knows how to communicate with it's own USBs
If it helps you understand it, you could run a linux distro with ryzen support and it would be able to use your USB ports, it's just windows 7 can't without a driver update.

Windows 7 is an old OS, it doesn't work properly with newest stuff out of the box. Doesn't even work with M2 SSDs too.

The CPU and RAM probably survived, if you had an SSD it's probably fine too.
I dont know what kind of europ you are so look at this https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/PyfFnn and buy the parts in order from most likely to be broken to least likely and you might be able to save enough to slap a gpu or SSD in there within your budget or just pocket it for next time someone breaks your PC or somehting.

Sorry for the late reply, someone was at door.

I remember being recommended to kick her out right away by some, I was stupid to believe that there still was a chance of her improving her behaviour.
Paid for therapy 2 times a week and it seemed to get better the first 1-2 weeks, 2 weeks ago it started again and then 3 days ago I came home to a ravage again.
It's my own stupid fault for not cutting things with her earlier, but I guess at the time I just couldn't.

Thanks a lot for the part list again, I will check availability at stores near me.
Do you think I can play WoW with this at 1080p when I turn down the settings?

I was stupid to believe that there was a chance that she'd improve and that professional help would help her, it's too late now though.

If you dont want to spend more, a 1600 is fine.
For those tasks you will see an improvement with a 1700 though, around 20-30% depending on how much you overclock/binning.
A 1600 will still be way faster than an i5 for that kind of work though so you're not going to get fucked on price/performance.

I'm the anon wondering about a dwarf fortress build from yesterday.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/j8GjkT

>>
The Ryzen 7 1700X is now priced at $349 in leading online stores, down from its launch price of $399. The Ryzen 7 1700 (non-X), on the other hand, is now selling for $319, down from its launch price of $329.

I'm picking up a new monitor today. I've narrowed it down to two choices.
>ASUS PB277Q
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236616&cm_re=Pb278q-_-24-236-616-_-Product
Its 27inch, 1440p, has a PLS panel, built in speakers and a better stand. It's about 90$ cheaper than the other option ($369 CAD)
>LG 27UD58
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=Lg+27ud58&N=-1&isNodeId=1
27inch, UHD, has an IPS panel, however has no built in speakers and a shitty stand, it is VESA mount compatible though. However it's more expensive ($449 CAD)

I'm pretty stuck, I don't do much gaming but I do play some on the side, and my graphics card can only handle 1440p or lower. I've heard the difference between 4k and 1440p isn't very noticeable, and that 27inch is perfect for 1440p.

Any thoughts on which one I should get?

anyway all the debug lights are off so that means
>RAM, CPU, GPU and boot all work
>all fans work (including those on GPU and CPU)
>keyboard and mouse connected work and glow properly
>no errors, beeps or anything wrong

but it shows nothing on two separate monitors

also, power obviously connected to everything, no fan issues, no components seem to be broken

the only issue is that my cpu ryzen 5 does not have an iGPU

I am pissed off. very frustrating. it should work. I rechecked everything. but nothing shows up on screen

does CPU need an iGPU for BIOS to show up?

You need a GPU of some sort. The motherboard doesn't have integrated graphics, nor do the Ryzen processors. So you use the graphics card plugged into the PCIe slot.

fixed. A 4 core, 4 thread i5 just isn't enough for today's gaming. Just overclock the R5 1600 to 3.7 Ghz (doable reliably on the stock cooler) and it'll perform very closely to, if not beat, the i7 7700k. Change mobo to MSI B350M Bazooka, or Mortar if you want red leds.
Spend some more on a case, like Fractal Design Define C Mini. While at it, you really might want to spend more on the GPU too, for a dual fan, and at least 4 heat pipes, Maybe bump it up to 8gb, after all, it's almost as good as an RX 480, so it does make snse to get 8gb... But, supposedly AMD handles vram caps better than nvidia, so whichever (8gb is gonna resell for more).

While still at it, you'll probably want to go for 1500X instead, because of the better heatsink.

It's still a fairly big investment, so you should be trying to "future proof" it, with an upgrade path.

Um. No it's more than 10%.
The average difference between 1700 and 1800X is like 6.5-7%. That's the AVERAGE difference.
When you compare best to worse, it's much more. Closer to 20%.

I have a 1600X that does 3.7GHz on 1.1V. Some unlucky people with 1600s (maybe with a bad board too idk) only get 3.7GHz at 1.25-1.3V

>>60698379
Ryzen cache doesn't work the same as intel's.
The cache is non-unified so any given core in a 1400 can only quickly access 4MB of L3 cache, and it has to go through the infinity fabric to access the other 4MB. 1500X has 8MB available to any core so the difference is more significant than it would otherwise seem.
>>
>>60698406
Your calculations are shit. Fuck off.

>If it was per day everyone would be mining etherium right now
they ARE, you retard, that's why they're all sold out and the network hashrate is so high.
>>
>>60698426
You're not gonna notice it in games.
7700K should be crashing and dying all the time if the 8mb cache was an issue.
>>
>>60698520
Why are you talking about a completely different CPU?
>>
>>60698534
Because 7700K only has 8mb cache. That's shared between 4 cores.
Each CCX has 4mb cache, shared between 2 cores, on 1400.

You should back up your claims that 1400 runs far worse on games, because of the cache (same clocks).
>>
Alright guys. I can't stand white, black, or black and red themed builds. Can someone please show me a decent Ryzen 5 1600 build, under $800, with a blue color theme
>>
>>60698604
7700k has 6MB not 8MB.

The 1400 does run about 5% worse clock-for-clock than the 1500X. Cache has a significant effect on IPC. HardwareUnboxed did a video comparing the two. But you shouldn't need the video, you should already have such an understanding of CPU architecture if you're going to be so sure of yourself.

>>
>>60698734
>Costs 12% more
>Runs 5% better
See? 5% isn't significant enough.

The main reason to get 1500X is for the stock cooler.
Spending $40 for a cooler on a 160-185$ CPU makes no sense.
>>
>>60698770
It's really not that far to scroll.

>>60698096

That means it's far worse, for something to be noticeable, even quite noticable, it needs to be quite big of a difference.
>>
>>60698794
He's probably talking about in multi threaded CPU benchmarks, in games the difference can be less or much more, depends on the game.
>>
>>60698824

Going to overclock the ryzen 1600 with stock cooler. What's the max I should set it to? Just set it to 3.7ghz wondering what I should set the voltage to? First time doing this
>>
>>60698818
Not really, noticable can also mean stuff like poor minimum frame rates or more frequent drops below 60FPS which will cause tearing or frame skipping.
>>60698845
I think you have a reading comprehension problem, or at least some kind of brain thing that interprets every sentence you see as whatever will make you the angriest.
>>
>>60698866
1.1 or so, maybe 1.125, or even 1.150, then see how low you can push it.
>>
>>60694262
No I haven't, I heard it would reduce its lifespan, and since it's getting old already... I don't want it to die on me. It's probably worth a try though.

The problem is the screen flickering... or screen tearing... no idea how to call it. On BF1 for example it's still there even with vsync, or even if I cap to 60 FPS, or even 59.something FPS. I tried everything and it doesn't go away, no idea why. When I play I almost never notice it anyway because it's sort of light, but it still bugs me. If I don't activate vsync my visual experience is crap, I don't feel like the game is smooth at all, which is probably linked to the monitor not handing so many frames (100-130 FPS) well. I haven't tried much other AAA titles yet, I'm hoping it doesn't do the same for those, but well...
I don't mind buying a new monitor because that way I can give that one to my sibling which is still using some sort of 1300x700 something abomination.

I looked into the prices and 1440p 144hz is way too expensive. So my choice would be either 1080p 144hz which would normally resolve my problem or 1440p 60hz. In the case of the 1440p 60hz I'm afraid of getting once more screen tearing etc problems... unless I pick a gsync one? I know fuck all about gsync to be honest, or about monitors in general. I just want a nice one I'd pick for a while.
If I pick a 1080p 144hz one it's fine even if I don't hit 144+ FPS all the time, right? Let's say it dips to 100 or so FPS in general I'd still get a smooth and nice experience, right?
>>
>>60698890
Why would tearing suddenly happen just because you're below 60 fps? When you're running above 60fps on a 60hz monitor you'll notice the same tearing.
If you actually have freesync or gsync, you WANT to stay below 60 fps on a 60hz monitor.

>I think you have a reading comprehension problem, or at least some kind of brain thing that interprets every sentence you see as whatever will make you the angriest.
Or maybe you're just completely retarded.
>>
>>60698866
You should go voltage first when cooler limited.
Set it to 1.2-1.25 volts and see what the highest clock you can get with that is.

Ryzen idles basically the same OC'd or not so it probably won't make a difference.
And the answer to anything with temperature targets is "whatever you're comfortable with"
As long as you're below 90 degrees you're probably fine, but a lot of people rather it below 80 or below 70 and some crazier people can't stand things going above 50 (probably not going to happen for you without water cooling or severe underclock)

I'm lurking and posting in these threads coz I'm building my first ever decent gaymin PC in a couple of months. Wanna know why? My current PC is a prebuilt 2008 Dell Inspiron that I bought second hand in '09 with no custom parts added. It still plays Dwarf Fortress flawlessly and we're taking about a potato that struggles with half a dozen web pages open, kek. What the fuck are you working with over there?
>>
>>60699330
So for example the Noctua - NH-D15 82.5 CFM will include a bracket for the MOBO I have?

>Why not going for an R7 1700 by the way?
I received a large budget to build a PC so I went with bigger numbers=better. Is the 1700 better? I did very little research into Ryzen.

No, it needs to have "AM4 edition" in the name

>Is the 1700 better?
The 1700 is just lower clocked, otherwise it's the exact same specs and it can be overclocked to pretty good levels in order to reach almost the same performance, so it's usually picked instead
But if it's not your money you're spending, and you don't care about saving money, then yeah the 1800x would be a better choice

Yes, it's over the top, just like you want. You're going to have problems setting up w7 with Ryzen if you're this dumb at computers, but it can be done.

Also, I don't know much about the platform/the motherboards/status of ram compatibility but if you're spending that much money, get the fastest RAM available on Ryzen.

>>60699672
These brackets can take quite some time to get.
>>
>>60699687
Well if you have a big budget just get a noctua DH-15 AM4 edition and either keep the stock fans or buy 140mm (PWM) fans from other brands because you can slap it on them
Normally there'd be much more options but i'm recommending a DH-15 instead because brackets can take a very long fucking time to get and the DH-15 has an excellent heatsink & stock fans that should be very quiet at normal / low RPM and still cool very very well
>>
>>60699697
I heard something about faster RAM having higher latency, but I don't know much about that. Is there a brand that doesn't overcharge too much for its gamer design shit or better yet not have gamer shit?

>You're going to have problems setting up w7 with Ryzen if you're this dumb at computers
I swear I'm only this dumb with hardware, I've done weirder software installations.

>>60699727
The D-15 looks great, is it worth getting the Fractal Design 140mm fans or will those be the stock case fans in the Define r5 anyway?
>>
>>60699770
I don't know, you'll have to research it more yourself, I just know their magic infinity fabric runs at the same speed as the RAM, therefore, faster, better.
>>
>>60699816
I checked and the RAM I already had in the build is 3200, the fastest the MOBO will take and also the cheapest per GB available, so I guess I did okay with that. 2 sticks is fine as long as I put them in alternating channels, or does that not matter anymore?
>>
>>60699770
The R5 comes with two 140mm fans (one in the ear one in the front) and has available room for one more 140mm fans in the front
It won't do much for thermals but you can always get it if you want
>>

I'd prefer something slim that has 2 vertical PCI.
I have a full ATX board with 2500k currently, but I'm honestly thinking of just getting a mATX board with a haswell dual core for lower power and shit, reusing my old RAM.

Unlike picture related, it needs to have more room for PCI slots below the bottom motherboard slot. It will have 2 GPUs that are 2 or 3 slot.
