I have one and with an ssd it's lightning quick, it's lighter than my x230t and the lid actually has a clamshell and latch so it doesn't get fucked over. also the 900p is nice but the viewing angles are worse than the ips but you can get an alienware m14x r2 screen that is decent

>cancerous protrusion of the 9 cell that ruins the portability of the x series even more
Have you ever actually used one? 9cell actually makes for better portability by providing a comfy grip. With the 6cell, it's flush with the back of the machine and you can't hold it nearly as well.
>>
What models of HP Probook/Dell Precision or Latitude or Lenovo Thinkpad actually has a decent screen? I have a T420 with the 1600x900 panel. Its screen is hideous. Backlighting on it makes my eyes hurt over time.

I have a 13.3" chromebook with 1080p screen that is gorgeous, but of course has all the limitations of a CB.
>>
>>60633209
have you attempted to put linux on the chromebook
>>
>>60633204
I've used the 6cell tablet variant which is basically the same shape and extra size, it is a convenient handle but it's bulky and awkward. also, on most models it sticks out of the bottom too making them even thicker. imo thickness is more inconvenient than width and height
>>
>>60632974

honestly, I think it's better to grab a used off ebay
>>60632892
>>
>>60633218
It's a Chromebook 2 from Toshiba. According to the page that says if a CB is compatible with custom BIOS/Linux install, mine is partial. It's missing audio and WiFi has a tendency to drop out according to to people. The WiFi was supposedly fixed, but the audio really never will be as its proprietary stuff made by Skull Candy.

W510/W520/W530 (Also T510~T530) - 1080p TN, better than most modern IPS
T420(s) - moddable 1080p IPS
T440p - First offical 1080P IPS
T540p, W540 - 3k IPS

This is the "I might be a poorfag but I still have some self respect so no eye cancer" list. If you have more than $500 I personally wouldn't buy a thinkpad. Just get any generic laptop with a dGPU.
>>
>>60633264
Maybe i'm just weird but I have an old spare HDD i'm putting in and not a real fan of using other people's drives. I'm ok with no name at $30.
>>
>>60633233
>imo thickness is more inconvenient than width and height
I don't think I could disagree more. I think thickness only really matters if you're trying to cram your thinkpad into a small backpack with a whole bunch of other shit so you need it to take up the least amount of space possible. When it's on your lap or another surface and in use, the thickness of the machine really doesn't matter at all, but the other dimensions determine how stable it is in your lap or how much desk space it occupies.

Yea I was looking at a Sager as they seem to be like the only brand that has god build quality, can be repaired/fixed by the user, and isn't $2500+ brand new. Link related (I know this is /tpg/ and this is considered a gaming laptop, but hear me out please).

https://www.sagernotebook.com/Notebook-NP6850.html

Laptop would be used for VM work, a little bit of mobile compiling and the nvidia GPU while weak can help aid in cuda acceleration.
>>
>>60633380
the 14" isn't anywhere near the point of being inconvenient though. and if you don't need to fit it into a bag then why get an ultraportable? I'd rather be able to slip a thin laptop in with a couple of pads of paper and have the extra space for like a pencil case or my other shit. with a bag so small that you're limited to a 12" then chances are you aren't getting anything else bulky in there with a thick laptop

both models come with two different size batteries, 6-cell and the extended 9-cell which bulges out the back

just it use it as is, spending only whats needed for it to do the job, or save more for a modern computer. This is like being concerned with buying rims for a $2,000 car. You don't. >>60637073
No, I'm buying a pretty modern desktop rig.

in 5 years I might want something that can power 4k monitors (assuming they get cheaper and more common) and there might be a new USB revision

I've looked at the buyer's guide, but I'm still a bit confused by all the different models. How hard is a screen swap to perform? I've built desktops before but that seems a bit unwieldy to me.
Also, what thinkpads have:

>t / w series. X series if there's a hidden gem somewhere
>preferably usb 3.0
Another anon mentioned the t530 in another thread. Is that a good model to hunt for? I'm happy to add ram / ssd, but i'm not too sure on a screen swap. Can't settle for 768p after using it for too long.
>>
>>60638601
T530. Definitely.
Even if it doesn't have a dGPU that seems to be better since you can shove in better processors and have fine temperatures.
As for the screen, it's really not that hard to do, and the T530 comes with the options of a fully functional FHD screen.

That, or W530 if you can find one at a good price. It follow the same principle as the T530, except that the dGPU is better.

T470p doesn't have Thunderbolt 3, while T470 and T470s do. T470s has one soldered RAM. T470 doesn't have an option of a 1440p screen.

And one of them doesn't have an easily removable battery. Forgot which.

The T470 line is a mess. Was thinking of buying one, probably gonna get the X1 carbon instead.
>>
>>60639453
The T470p has been shunned because Lenovo singled it out to exclude the tendiebolt port. The model that would otherwise attained the greatest benefit from TB peripherals (w/ the QC) isn't able to use them.

After driver version 368.81, nvidia blocked pci-e connections that are not "hotplug enabled." If you have a card that's supported by driver 368.81, you can install it first and then update to the latest version to get around the problem. However, if your card came out afterwards (1080Ti, 1050, 1030), you can't load 368.81 in the first place, so you're stuck.

Are all W530 motherboards equipped with 4 RAM slots, and are there different mobos with and without certain card readers or whatever?

Thanks. The issue is though that motherboards come without the CPUs, finding the FRU for quad core mobos is a bitch because Lenovo's documentation may as well be hieroglyphics.

if you can get the model number/serial number of the laptop you can just look it up on Lenovo's site to see what the original specs were

Have you tried "updating the driver" via the Device Manager on Windows? Or Windows Update, since it's almost the same process in the end?

5kg is fine for a cat, also a monitor should be fine but I can't remember if the x220 has a roll cage in the back of the screen.
>>
>>60649127
it was optional

the BIOS should give you the serial number, put the serial number in here >>60648399 and it should tell you if it came with bluetooth or not

It's a "HID Compatible ____" driver.
It's not for extending pen functionality, it's for making the pen function at all.

I have acquired a lenovo thinkpad, how do I go about upgrading it? I think it probably wont be good at all for games, at least the new ones but im mainly using it to browse the internet and watch videos/media.
It had this
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo CPU @2.10GHz
1 GB of RAM

do i just leave it as is or what?
>>
>>60649473
install the wacom feeldriver and see what happens

if it's a Wacom device it will probably fix it, if it's some chink shit then you're probably out of luck and I don't want to google it myself

My T430 microphone isn't working.

i reinstalled drivers, made sure it was enabled, not muted, etc.

>Win10

When I enable "listen to this device" I just hear static/white noise/snow.

What's weird is my webcam works. Should I just go ahead and swap the module in the screen bezel?
>>
is t420s really not that much heavier than my x200s?
>>
>>60649605
I think it's probably and issue with the hardware, my x230t mic died but it was some super weird driver issue where I had to literally re-install windows
>>
>>60649623
my t420s is lighter than my x230t, although the x2xxt is probably heavier than an x2xxs so it probably works out about right that the x200s is only slightly lighter
>>
>>60649695
thanks. I need to upgrade from my x200s as it runs too hot watching youtube videos. Dont want to downgrade from the 1440x900 resolution though. Since X201s are so rare, t420s seems like a logical choice to me.
>>
>>60649885
the t420s is bretty good, it can take ultrabay batteries and hdds too which is a big upgrade.
>>

also how the fuk did you get your hands on a 1440x900 x200s? I've been looking for one for ages

Heres my x200s, which is a 1.867 GHz Core2 Duo. I use tpfan-admin to control my fan speeds. In this screenshot, the CPU is mostly loaded by watching a YouTube video at YouTubes lowest resolution of 144. My fan is currently running at 90%, trying to keep the CPU temp under 70C. If I increase the resolution of the video to even 240 my CPU will not be able to stay under 70C

Anyone got any suggestions to get Morrowind to run above 25 fps on an x220. Oblivion runs 45-60 on mostly high. Looking online pretty much shows it's a garbage engine, I just want to confirm it.

>inb4 get egpu
>>
>>60651133
what's wrong with getting an egpu though
>>
>>60649200

The X2xx until the X240 have a rubberized magnesium lid, that's why its cool to the touch and that's why they have that plastic strip at the top, its where all the antennas are for signals to actually pass through. The later ThinkPads and even the T4xx W5xx ThinkPads have always have GFRP/CFRP lids that allow for RF signals to pass through.

Anyone know how long the T430 will last?

Go to the dell thread and ask them.
Oh wait there is no dell thread because nobody here gives a shit about dells.

What makes sense about going into a thinkpad thread and talking about computers that are not thinkpads? Do you honestly expect a real answer??

What I meant was right clicking the device and selecting "Update driver software".
It searches the internets for the driver, and works 90% of the time unless it's a very specific device.
>>60649479
What model is it? Depending on your answer we can tell you the max amount of RAM and upgrades it can take, but if it's just for browsing and media you should be fine as long as you stick in a 2 GB RAM stick.

>no one can get above 2.93GHz with a 3840QM @ 45W.

This alone makes upgrading to a high end quad core CPU dead on arrival. Any ivybridge socketed ThinkPad can do 4.0GHz with a 3840QM.
