Fourth for friendly reminder to ignore the 2570p shitposter[s?].
As long as you're asking for advice or support, posts about the HP EliteBooks should be fine, just don't shitpost. It eats roughly 15-30% of the thread.

Are they solidly built?
Because they look really nice in pictures.

People will argue about the keyboard, aesthetic, build quality, and overall everything except raw performance.

If you need a 12 inch quad core it's your best bet - but it can't compete with anything except the 12 inch X series.

My X40 needs a new battery. The current one (extended 8 cell) lasts for about half an hour. Am I better off making it a home server?

The T41p I bought a week ago seems to work flawless with Lubuntu 14.04 and the 9-cell battery lasts 6 hours straight. Maybe next week i'll buy a PATA->SATA caddy and give it a SSD.

Not worth it unless you try your luck with a chink battery. But for some reason it seems to be one of their worst products, I can only speak for myself, though...

Its 700mb, fits nice in a SD card and it was the ISO I had at hand. Using it as a liveCD for now as I dont have a hard drive for that machine.
The only thing that bothers me is that it doesnt have the Radeon drivers, something that a fresh install should cover.

>chink batteries
Yeah, they are a last resort for me. Sadly the X40 uses both 18650 cells and some flat cells.
It'd be sweet to refresh the cells and get the 7 hours battery life it promised when new.

>>60656308
I'm talking about tn vs tn
stock 2570p tn is better than stock x230 tn
>What the fuck does that even mean?
x220/x230 IPS screen is known for:
1. Having 3x increased power consumption
2. Developing burns in the inner layer of LCD screen after long periods of use
3. Having "ghosting" effect which affects Gaymur(TM) experience and watching movies/browsing net
it also hurts eyes even at 50% backlight, so have fun using it for more than 30 minutes.

Market segmentation.
You're basically paying for the brand.

I have this device and the build quality is better than many recent ThinkPads. In fact, the build quality varies a lot from model to model, there's little significance to the series (ThinkPad, IdeaPad). There are ThinkPads with shitty build quality and IdeaPads with excellent build quality.

And you're saying this after having any experience with 2570p?
x230 won't handle such heat with stock cooling for sure. 2570p? I'm using mine with i7-3740qm and I've never seen it throttling during any workload. If anyone considers upgrading 1600MT/s RAM to 2133MT/s - do it, if you gaym on HD4000.
I've just tested L4D2 between 1600 and 2133MT/s RAM (same timings, both DDR3L) and I can note about 25% boost in FPS under 2133.

Thinkfags need not apply, because there are no DDR3 thinkpads supporting 16GB (2x8) 2133MT/s configs, unless they fall for the 8GB meme. Personally tested thinkpads (x230, t430) require CL13 2133MT/s RAM to use this mode, otherwise it will throttle to 1866MT/s or 1600MT/s.

Found an x240 for $300.

i7-4600u, maxed RAM (8GB).

I'm aware of the one-slot and ULV meme and am fine with it. The price is too insane for me not to consider.

I want the 3-cell battery. This will be my minimalist daily carry for when I don't wanna lug around the T430.

The touchpad is another $35 and the display is $80, so call it $125 extra. I doubt I can find an x250 with an i7, fhd, and 8gb ram for that price. Cheapest one on eBay is $550.

I want to flash a modded bios to my t420s
I've found a bios file, and read through the readme so I feel pretty confident in installing it.
What are the chances of it getting borked or going wrong? will this brick my thinkpad?

Is there even any point in installing the new bios?

I'm also looking to eventually get an egpu going. I want to use the exp gdc adapter and if possible use the built in display.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

>>60665202
You don't need BIOS upgrade unless you want to unlock ram speeds, install coreboot or disable Mini PCIe whitelists.

If all fails and you brick your T420s you can always use an external flasher to load a new BIOS.

ExpressCard is limited to 1x PCIe speed and using the internal display strains it even further as the data has to be copied back and forth. You get better performance with a screen attached to the eGPU but this may or may not matter depending on what game you're playing.
>>
>>60665526
thanks for the help, I'm probaby going to get an egpu first and then go from there, and only bother flashing if I need to as apparently sometimes you need to change express card settings

X230 > 2570p... that's debatable probably.
x230 has backlit keyboard and a small light from above (both), 2570p nothing. That's a pro for my needs.

What.
It has a light on the right side of webcam. You open it with the middle mechanical button between light and cam.
And mentioning backlit keyboard in x230... Please don't do that anon.
Backlit keyboards are made of shitty plastic that wears pretty quickly, especially small handles that keep each button in plastic sockets. It breaks VERY quickly and you have to always be careful not to tap it too hard. Also x230 backlit buttons got no anti-microbial layer, unlike standard keys.
And did you see this disgusting light bleeding in x230? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like it. I was always disabling this entire "feature" to not hurt my eyes when working in the night.
>>
>>60674186

The HP light is a fucking joke. It's trolling at his finest.
The backlit keyboard on x230 it's useful for me at night, I don't bash, guess I won't have problems..No idea about no anti-microbial layer, not sure if it's shitposting but thanks for the news.

Oh some more infos for anons.
You can easily access to Elitebooks just with a sliding out move of the backpanel.
Thinkpad you have to unscrew the hell out of everything to access (more safe if you mind security but still...), something to consider when you want to buy.

my x230 is tn, no ips, but yeah, both screens are average to be polite, I deal with it, I already knew.
If I have to buy something 1080 resolution, which I will consider but only in a not so near future, I have already filtered the hell out of every model out there, I'd look at latitude 7270 or 7280.
>>
>>60674293

No it's not, unless:

well they suck as a tablet because they are fat, low resolution, pen sucks, relatively low battery life

I have an X220t and an X230. I like the X220t but I wouldn't buy it again. Also going to try selling it soon so it would be against my best interests to say it's not good.

Touch screen digitizer.
>>
>>60679138
Wobbly screen is 100% a real issue

worse battery life since the X220/X230 tablets were only available with 4/6 cell batteries while the non-tablets could get 9-cell batteries.

And then there's also the IPS screen burn in/image retention problem. Which is very prevalent on the X220/X230 tablets.

I guess I'm just the average Joe, then (T530).

>>60673982
Learn fundamentals first, then take a pick:
Python is good for beginners; don't let /g/'s bias for C fool you, it's good enough for daily use.
That said, C is a good option, but learn it as a stepping stone to C++ or C#
Java if you like to write a lot
Ruby or Lua if your focus is games.
>>
>>60679394
I would recommend a TN model, yes. The X220/X230 TN screens are pretty good, unlike the T420/T430's which were literally the worst on the market.

Screen savers can help but doesn't fix it. For instance if you're 4channing full screen after awhile your browsers title bar/buttons will be burned into the screen. If you leave for a piss for 5 minutes and the screen saver kicks on then it mostly go away by the time you get back. But that requires you to be doing nothing and letting the screen saver go... If you want to just switch to watching anime or whatever then you'll be stuck with your browser buttons overlaying on top of your movie/show.

Is a quad-core i7 worth it? I am looking at getting a thinkpad but can't find any that have the i7 7700hq. I do a lot of VM work and cpu heavy work so I am kind of stuck on what to look for in a cpu. Also, is there a big enough difference between the two dual core i7s to warrant paying more?
>>
>>60680101
Use acpid. See the documentation on arch wiki.
>>
I was looking at something like a t530. My local computer salvage shop has a t510 for like $265. Is that too much / too old? They let me play around with a bit. Seemed pretty slow in win10, but I'd be throwing ubuntu on it anyway.
>>
>>60680177
it will not "fight" with tlp or do something redundant, will it?
>>
>>60680164
you would know if you needed a quad core or not, go with ur heart

>>60680223
yes that's too much and it's two generations older than the T530

and to be fair the slowness is probably because it didn't have an SSD
>>
>>60680164
It is definitely worth it, but it will obviously draw more power and reduce a bit your battery time.
Quad cores in 12 inches laptops such as X series and 27x0p EliteBooks are kind of a meme, especially since 12 inch is meant for ultraportability and long lasting battery life.

>>60680223
Did you get to see its specs? Also, putting in a SSD can breathe life and responsiveness into these machines, and by a great mark, even if it just holds the OS.
The best processor for that Gen is a 2.133 GHz, Quad core i7-940XM, which comes with a TDP of 55W and costs around $100 at much.
I'd say go for it, but the price is a bit too much considering you can get a Tx30 for that same price.
>>
>>60680391
>>60680296
Definitely going to put an ssd in whatever thinkpad I get. And probably a ram upgrade. I'm not really looking to swap cpu because with all that added expense, i'd be better off just buying a newer model online.
I did get to see the specs. It has an i5 540 at 2.4ghz. 768p panel.
Also, this is for the whole thread; how are you supposed to use the nipple mouse? Everybody says how great it is, but I couldn't get the hang of it when I got to play with one today.

Looking for some thoughts or suggestions
Been using my preowned T420 for a little while now and I'm loving it, but its speaker grills were pretty dirty and looked as if something had been spilled on them which really annoyed me. I don't use the speakers anyway so I just ripped the grills right off. What should I put there to cover up these areas? Would it be worth cutting new grills and gluing them there or would they just get dirty again and irritate me? Or should I just get a thin sheet of plastic or something the same colour as the rest of the ThinkPad?
My fear is that whatever I do will look tacky, I want it to look as slick as possible.

HP advertises 100Wh 9cell battery to last 14 hours. If you additionally replace stock wifi card with 7260, enable ASPMs, cap wifi and pcie sd card reader to 2,5Gbps, disable intel display audio adapter, replace ddr3 ram with ddr3l,make the HDD spindown after 2 minutes and properly configure your system then you can increase it by another 4 hours at least. Then if you count quad core cpu instead of dual core... the power consumption is higher, but not THAT high to cause massive battery drain. Keep in mind qc chips are better quality than dual core ones and actual cores are physically smaller.
So it's nothing shocking that i7-3740qm or i7-3840qm has same power consumption as ie. i5-3320m when it does nothing. Not to mention the simple fact, that if you can finish work quicker with more resources at the end it might result in less power used.
>>
>>60681391
Okay, you convinced me. I'm going for a i7-3840QM even if the import taxes rape my wallet. Thanks for the heads up.
Sadly, I lack the hardware to mod my T530's BIOS, or else I would remove the whitelist and add another card that that doesn't suck that bad.

I have a T60 with AMD graphics and a 2gHz Core2 Duo, what should I do with it? I'm not against using as a daily driver laptop and it does well enough as such but I'm having difficulty getting the right browser for it. It can do YouTube at 720p60 pretty comfortably in Vivaldi but then eBay and other scrip/ad heavy sites it chokes out, meanwhile most Firefox derivatives have the opposite issue, where YouTube struggles but other sites run well enough to a point.
I'm running Windows 7x64 with the full 3gb of RAM the chipset supports (thanks Intel, really ingenious of you to limit that) and the OS isn't actually hurting the performance that badly, but browsers of course max out the poor Core2 Duo...
Suggestions? I don't expect it to run circles around a t420 or anything but I would like to get the most out of it.
