Whats the last Thinkpad with a thinklight?
>>
>>60603084
T430, which was also the only model that had both the light and a backlit keyboard.
>>
>>60602991
I concur with this assessment. The xx30 is the best Thinkpad series in existence, and the xx40 is still top notch for upgrading (Haswell was the last mobile socket gen). After that it went downhill, but if you can get past the soldering meme, they're alright.
>>
What would be better in a t430 with coreboot;

i7 quad maybe slightly overclocked

i5 with decent overclock (4+ ghz)
>>
>>60603253
Why does the coreboot bit matter?

You can't overclock i5 chips.

>>
>>60603703

Why a 40 series over a 30 series?
>>
>>60603726
Hm, you're right, I should have gone with W530, I already have a T530 and it's bretty gud. The only upgrades I might do are FHD screen and caddy, though...
>>
>>60603703
Sorry, I meant the xx30 series.
>>
>>60603747
Wait, do you need a second machine or a T530 replacement?

If you need a replacement, you can buy a W530 mobo and rip out the T530s'.
>>
>>60603771
Do I need to replace the bottom? If I remember correctly the W530 takes two HDDs (three with a caddy, I guess?) whereas the T530 only takes one (two with a caddy).
>>
>>60603703
ya all *30 had optional backlit keyboards, but all still come with the thinklight (minus the x230 tablet)
>>
>>60604062

Speaking of thinklight, has anyone modded them

I liked the idea behind the amber thinklights, but not quite the implementation. My T430 has a pretty cold/blue thinklight. I would bet that swapping the led out with a warmer one is just a matter of a desolder and solder job. Something about 2500k or evening sun temp.

This is sorta the same idea as flux. Blue light tends to wake you up.

>>60606400
Please don't be stupid enough to think that the quality of a product is subjective or non-qualifiable.

People's use cases are different though. The question reads 'No restrictions, which one would you buy?'. Some people will value screen quality / resolution more, some will value power more, some will value weight or port selection, it's very much a subjective answer based on personal preference and objective facts.

Currently, this Z60m has Pentium M750 1gb ram and 80gb hdd.
T61 on the other hand has 3gb ram T7300 and 80gb hdd and 1280x800 (shitty) screen.
On my way to upgrade these, but for now they are fine.
>>60611468
>wuxga
I wonder if I could mod that kind of screen to Z60m. 1280x800 tends to get a bit annoying after for a while. After I have experienced 1400x1050 4:3 screen on my T30, I decided to pay more attention towards screen upgrade.

I doubt it, it's got some strange connector that even the t60p doesn't have. you can get a t60p with a different wuxga panel that is ips too. posting pictures shortly so you can bask in my cancer

The $320 W540 K2000M motherboard that I paid $20 for came today. Anyone interested in me streaming setting it up?

I have to use some proprietary tool to set it up since it was never correctly set up at the factory (which might be why so few people bid on it).

End goal is to build a W541 using a T540p as a base. The T540p, W540, and W541 all have the same exact chassis, and the only difference between the W541 and the W540 is the touchpad and the refreshed processor (same socket so you can swap in the new ones).

Hey /tpg/, I never come to this general but I need assistance.

My friend used to work for RBS in the noughhties and due to bureaucratic inefficiency he was never asked to hand in his IBM work thinkpad from 2008 after he was transferred to a different job.

We discovered it in the loft recently and it still works - problem is that after booting I am taken to the Pointsec PC logon. I assume breaking this is impossible as it protected the banks mainframe. I have two questions:

Is is both possible and plausible to install Linux on it (I can open the boot sequence and bios)

Is it worth doing? It was manufactured in 2007 so it's IBM not Lenovo.

Thanks in advance sorry for blog posting.

If you can open the boot sequence and bios then you can boot a linux install CD and install linux.

For older hardware go with puppy linux or Debian with LXQt, openbox or awesomewm if you want tiling.

USB 3.0 is a huge advantage.
Keyboard backlight is cool too (combined with the Thinklight)

I've yet to have any USB that saturates or even reaches USB 3.0 speeds of 5Gib/s. Similarly, external HDDs are limited by their IO, so speeds don't exceed that. So I would say half of 2.5Gib/s is still more than plenty. Although SSDs or similar high speed flash might be different and saturate the connection.

Yes, but I have to admit that even though the economy is not the best, there are other little things that can be enjoyed.

Anyways, I don't know if I'm getting blind or dyslexic, but the 6 on the model looks a bit like a 5 in this image, but I am fairly sure it's a T60p

Also, what is a good Touchscreen ThinkPad or EliteBook if I don't really intend to do heavy tasks and I'd just rather have a machine to do random doodles in?

as for the intel side of things the M, MQ and MX models are okay but the ULVs aka U model are absolute shit. Not enough efficiency to consider over a third gen M. And the igpu isnt much a bump over the HD4000

that aside that 4th gen is the last gen with socketted cpus and the pad swap isnt too hard but I'd avoid it mostly for beginners.

I've got a T420 that has an issue where sometimes it'll turn itself off after about 30 minutes/hour of use, it's appeared in the past 2 weeks or so.

I did wonder if it was something thermal but temps are generally pretty good and it's never thermally shut down on me before.
When I say turn off, it's a complete power failure regardless of if the batteries in or out or the AC is connected or not it'll just completely die with no warning.
This is also the case if it's charging with or without the dock.

I assume something on the motherboard is going but does anyone know what or if there's something else doing this, I have tried google as well but it was hard for me to find a coherent way in to locating a reasonable kind of answer.
>>
>>60617121
>>60617195
I believe the exact model I purchased was the 04W3270. If you just search it on ebay it'll come up. If you already have dedicated graphics you'll already have it, but the nvidia gpu will make it run warmer than just having an igpu. Not saying the upgrade isn't worth it, but your temps will be higher.

Any t430 model will handle that and then some. You could always go for a t420 but the memeboard is the only reason not to just get a t430, and if it bothers you that much you can just swap it out later

So I bought a t420 and have had linux on it for a while, and it worked completely fine. But now I have installed a win7 partition and the max display resolution is only 1024x768. i have tried it on win10 too. i've installed different drivers and nothing seems to work. what the hell do i do

Yes, but it will get toasty and throttle if you're running the CPU at full load while doing anything GPU intensive. That's why I don't recommend going past the 37xxQM chips in the T430. The 3840QM is the max for those without a dGPU, but those with a GPU have throttling issues as low as 36xx quad cores.

I know your pain. Happened to me with a Satellite C855D. Wouldn't have minded the fact that it was a low grade netbook if it wasn't because the hinge broke and totalled the frame.

Yes, because apparently any kind of thermal paste is considered industrial material.
This is a common problem people who try to import thermal paste, Amazon Mexico stopped selling it because people had problems with customs too frequently.

You can't add 1080p or 4K on the T420, there was a chip made but it was faulty, it isn't recommended, if you want to still shove your hand through the thornbush there is some chips on alibaba, buy on your own risk.

this T-420 you guys keep mentioning has me intrigued.
considering what was on the market at the same time the T-420 came out, some were better spec'd some were better priced, some were this, some were that.
if we made the same list of today's machines, what would be a good example of the T-420's grandchild/ nth iteration?
what is the modern replacement?
does is have the same longevity, so that years from now this thread will be about the 2017 model_ rather than the T-420s we are talking about now?

sorry for rambling on. it's kind of a hard question to ask i think.

The connection to the wireless AP itself isn't broken though.

Both my x201 laptops do this. I'm wondering if it's a 'feature'/bug related to the power settings in windows 7 and the wireless card. But even changing up the power settings to never allow the adapter to sleep, etc doesn't fix this.
