Gonna transplant a X1 Carbon screen into my T430s. Bought a LCD extender cable from china that will arrive in 2-4 weeks.

Anyone done this or something similar? I read on the tp wiki that you need to snip a triangle from the one edge of the cable?

>>
>>60583790
how much of an upgrade do you want

it can take 16gb ram if that's what u need

cpu performance marginal, depends which ones you have/can get, look up benchmarks

integrated graphics performance big upgrade

battery life probably a big upgrade if you get a good one

Does anyone have experience with chinkshit thinkpad batteries? I need t420 replacement batteries and I'm trying to figure where I should get them. The new oem ones are $100, but I don't want one that is going to turn into a brick or a house fire.
>>
>>60584256
Could be. It's not that much of an issue, though, just a bit curious.
It happens even when you turn it off, that's why I'm asking; it's not bright as a LCD backlight, it's actually really dim. The ThinkLight works great, nonetheless.

>>60584265
>>60584256
Regarding the T43, is it hard or expensive to fix the screen inverter or should I just try to get another screen if I happen to buy it?

>>60584291
Most of the time you're safer with OEM batteries, chinks rarely have their advertised capacity and in some cases they can die on you or allahu akbar while you're shitposting about why you should install Gentoo

I found a SL500 in a trash pile in front of an electronics school in decent visual state. It had Windows XP installed on it but wouldn't boot because the controller was set to AHCI instead of IDE after the BIOS battery died, which is presumably why it was thrown in the trash. Installed Arch on it and it runs like heaven.

Why haven't I heard of this model before? It has a comfy screen and can be upgraded to hell.

>>60585090
you had any issues on ubuntu with crashes from i915 drivers? I keep getting system hangs after 15 mins - 45 mins of uptime. it causes the machine to reboot.

I bought a T430 about one hr ago, it will ship in the mail. It has a i5-3210M and 1600 X 900 res.
Only 4 GB ram, but I have 8 GB ready here, so it will run on 12. It comes with a 250 Gb stone age version, so that will be replaced with a Sumsumg 750 Evo 256 SSD.
Then I'll be set to go, I payed almost 180 usd, I'm a Scandinavia-fag, so I think the price is ok. I am curious to if it is worth the effort to upgrade cpu ? And is it possible to get an old keyboard (the T420 version) that is back-lid?
Seller said battery last a bit more than one hr, so I better get a new one. Where to get? Pointers much appreciated.

So I bought a Thinkpad W520 around August of last year.
Flash forward now, here's my opinion on it.
It's shit. I don't understand what's so special about it. I mainly use it for browsing the internet, playing some games here and there, use music recording software like FL studios. Pretty much any laptop can do this. Bought for $250, so I guess there's that. But it's so fucking thick.

Yes, and no, it depends on the size of your computer's monitor as well as what you do on it. Personally, I find it sort of rough because I'm the multi-tasking sort, but if you mostly do one task at a time then it's not so bad.

Forget trying to have two pages or two applications opened up side by side and still have it be a comfortable experience however. I would say that it's pretty much always worth trying to get 1600x900 if possible.

The batteries of the newer models are swappable. Also, most numbers you'd need to crunch on safari are still something you can do with a dual core. You're on a safari: chances are you need the max level of battery life given that you don't have easy access to a charger.

Using an i7 U instead of HQ is the difference between getting weeks of battery life with your six batteries and getting a week.

Looking to pick up 15" Thinkpad for my mom, any reason to go for a T530/40 over a T520 if all she's going to do is browse the internet and use a word processor? >>
>>60590128
well T530's aren't that much more than T520's, keyboard is easier to clean and looks modern

whole machine is newer so it'll probably be in better condition plus it has USB 3.0 so it's relatively future-proofed

you will end up being her tech support if you install linux on it

it's not like it's going to randomly break or fall apart if it's going to be sitting on the kitchen counter its whole life

stick an ssd in it and clean install of whatever version of Windows she is used to and it will last well over 6 years comfortably

You can very easily find a working one for $40 or less. When you do find one make sure it's a 1400x1050 model (there's a 1600x1200 model too but those are rare as fuck), it's super comfy to use. Is it just me or does linux have significantly better performance over windows 10?

I have a t430 and I tried using windows on it but it had a bunch of font rendering issues in chrome and was kinda lame. Since I didn't plan on gaming on this machine and I wanted it to be comfy I installed Arch and I noticed that the performance was significantly better. I have the i5, 8gb ram and an SSD.

I'm pretty happy with this purchase, even though it is a 5 year old laptop because it was only ever used in a corporate environment it is pretty much in mint condition apart form the screen wobbling which seems like an easy fix.

Sounds fair enough. I'm still looking at two other ThinkPads before I make a decision, but based on what you guys just said, I'll probably skip the T43p.

The other two (actually three) I'm looking at are a T60p with no OS and no battery for about $45, a T61p with unspecified specs and the seller just says that "it doesn't werk" for about $25, and a... R61i? Not sure, I need help identifying it. Goes for around $30 and seller just says "it doesn't werk" too.

Also, which Windows is better if I want the most of my T530? 7, 8.1 or Bloatnet (a.k.a. 10)?
>>
>>60590245
My point? Look at who I was replying to. Their argument is that laptop x is better than y because x has a dual core while y has a quad core. Sure, if your metric for "better" is exclusively based on how fast / how many cores a CPU has, then you're right.

But these are laptops, and they're all designed with use cases in mind. It's comparing apples and oranges to try and compare a small laptop whose priority is portability and battery life to a machine that's a bigger drain on battery life.
>>
>>60585133
>those hinges
God no. What res is the display?
>>
>>60590807

The T60p looks like the better option out of all the models you've listed, it's not as old as the t43 (pentium m are honestly just too old at this point), core2duos are still pretty gud, and if it's only lacking a battery, I'd get that.

IIRC you can build a frankenpad with a t60p but I don't remember right now.

Just stick to windows 7.
>>
>>60590807
If you're going to install Windows at all just go with 10. It's not like resource usage is a worry on a **30. Make sure to install the enterprise version so that you can at least disable some of the spying (which is also in 7). You should really be dual booting with debian or fedora.
>>
>>60591505
Technically I am sort of dual booting with a Debian based distro (Ubuntu MATE; might consider just going for good ol' Debian, though), but for the moment I have to manually change my HDDs because I don't have a caddy yet.

>But Anon, they're $5 on Ali-Express
I know, I really should get one soon, but I do have a question, can the OD be used externally by any means? Or should I just get a proper external OD?

Last but not least, is LTSB 2016 the latest non-trial LTSB available? Do activators work with it?
>>
>>60591569
Why not partition a single drive to dual boot? Also if you go Debian then go with unstable (it's not actually unstable, I actually have less (i.e. none at all now) problems now that i upgraded from the testing branch).

There actually is a cable to connect Thinkpad ultrabay stuff through usb, but it's almost $9 including shipping, and ships from fucking Malaysia. http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-External-Cable-for-ThinkPad-Ultrabay-Slim-SATA-/330552904154

You should definitely get an external optical drive considering you can get one for just $13.

I don't get the LTSB meme, you get importantish updates much later. I went regular enterprise.

KMSpico works with basically every version since 7, look for it on mydigitallife or TPB. I wouldn't google "kmspico" to look for a link because I tried that in a VM and I got malware. There are probably other activation methods also.

Well the X260 is currently out of my price range and if I had to upgrade immediately I'd just pick another X230. Maybe the i7 version this time.

X230 is a huge upgrade over X201 if you need more than 8GiB memory or any kind of GPU peformance. I'd expect X260 to be only a bit more than X230 in terms of performance as they've been focusing mostly on powersaving and not getting more powerful CPUs. The GPU is a tad better too.

>>60598539
Tell me what laptop you upgraded to and I will carefully explain to you why it's shit.
>>
>>60599457
I'm leaning towards Gentoo because of number the ease of customization (Arch doesn't support that so much), and number 2 being a 32 bit means I'm a little more funky

You should try out GuixSD if you're into muh freedumbs, it's pretty fucking sick. I think NixOS and GuixSD are the F U T U R E.

But, probably going gentoo. It's time to pay my dues and become a unix mage.

I was cracking open my X120e to clean the fan and I noticed this empty slot.

Is there anything cool I can do with it, or is it just for Bluetooth/WiFi?
>>
>>60599960
I could go for a chromebook then?

Dell 5480.
14", trackpoint, Thunderbolt 3, Quad core cpu.
All with a 25mm z height.

Can't wait to get one used in a few years.
>>
>>60599980

they arent quite as shit as they once were

try some out in person and see what you like

The yoga x1 with oled is pretty much the best screen on the market
>>
>>60599980
If you've already gone there, then maybe you could give some more details about what you're looking for since otherwise all we could do is pitch each and every single Thinkpad model for you and talk about how each one would do hypothetically based on a million different use cases.
>>
>>60599995
You could go for a MacBook Pro if you really wanted to. It depends on what you are looking for in a laptop.
>>
>>60599987

I'm guessing that might be for WWAN. Might be possible to put something else there.

Check the manuals
>>
>>60599987
that would be the mPCIe slot and those are antennae

WWAN/WLAN, if you're lucky it could support mSATA SSD's too
>>
>>60599995
you have a point. I am looking for a laptop that does not break easily and be powerful enough to use programs such as CAD, photoshop, etc

What is this "cumpad" edgy maymay? Can I get a quick rundown of it? Why that urge/need to jizz on your keyboard? That's disgusting
>>
>>60600329
The whole thing is a piece of chink shit, but I got it for $80 including drive, battery, and adapter. I ended up giving up on taking out the heatsink because the power connector for the fan is stuck. I pulled on the connector until the plastic came off and it still didn't come out.

optimally you'd want a brand new keyboard and trackpad sticker for it, but adds cost

Hey I need some advice. I'm looking to doing an eGPU setup with a thinkpad laptop, and i was thinking on buying an X220 and slapping an ssd in there and setting up a r7 370 as the eGPu, now does anyone have a better recommendation for me? My budget is like $200 and dont say don't do an egpu because I literally already have everything I need, and I love thinkpad laptops. So reccomendations?

you should grab

or

for any egpu setup.
>>

thinkpads suck for egpu set ups
>>
>>60601265
Then what makes the hp and the dell good that's what I'm asking
>>
>>60601301
Simply because the thinkpads get bitchy when doing using EGPUs.

Also IIRC the 5Gbps expresscard slot on the elitebook and latitude are faster than the one on the thinkpads.

what software to clone hard drive

specifically from a samsung ssd to an hdd

samsung's data migration only wants to go to another samsung ssd
>>
>>60590475
It is WP on some datasheets and PROT on others. But the blog post tells you which number pins it in on each kind of chip.
>>
>>60601986
cloning drives is dumb.

Unless you need to save data from a dailing drive.

Unpopular opinion for this thread, but they never really stopped being good. They stopped being great, but as far as computers go today the Thinkpad's are still pretty great.
