I'm running win7 and MINT dual boot. I'm trying to expand the space where MINT's filesystem is. I already created some unallocated space through win7 but can't seem to put it to use with GPart. Here's a gif of what's going on. I want to merge the unallocated space with the ext4 space.
>>
>>60546988
Your problem is you're trying to move the start of an OS partition. That's going to be a pain, as you probably already knew.
>>
>>60547141
Yeah, the thing is that I have done it before, like 3-4 months ago was when I first expanded the space but I can't recall how or what I did. I remember somehow moving the unallocated space after the MINT partition, so that I was able to expand the ext4 partition further but as I said, no clue how I did it
>>
is bash scripting and shell scripting the same thing?
>>
>>60546988
As far as I can tell, you can't.
It has something to do with booting of OS, Can't remember what exactly, but I had a similar issue a few years a go.
My workaround was backing up the partition the wiping it then restoring it.
Ever since then I always install each OS on different physical drive.
>>
>>60547214
Yeah I think that I can't just extend the file system since it's in use at the moment, should be obvious but didn't hit me at first. I guess I'll just boot from the MINT installation iso with USB and try from there, should definitely work when doing it like that.

Google's Chrome and Opera have "data compression proxies" that you can use to save up data usage.
How safe are they? For example using it while logging to a website that uses SSL?
>>
>>60547179
no, bash is a shell.
a bash script only works with bash compatible shells.
a powershell script only works with powershell compatible shells.
>>
>>60547382
MITM has access to everything you do including SSL connections.
>>
>>60546988
you can't resize a mounted ext4 volume, and you can't move a mounted volume
boot from your mint livecd, then move/resize it
>>
>>60547421
I thought SSL was invented to stop MITM attacks.
>>
>>60547447

>Data Saver
>If you enable Data Saver, Chrome will send your HTTP traffic through Google's optimizing proxy servers. This option reduces the amount of data downloaded, and protects you against malware and phishing via the Safe Browsing service. You can find more information about the data compression benefits on the Chromium blog.
>The proxy service is disabled for connections to HTTPS origins and connections made from Incognito tabs. These connections are not routed through Google's servers. For connections to HTTP origins, request URLs are logged. Cookies and If-None-Match headers are stripped from the logs. Additionally, the content of proxied pages is also cached but not logged. The logs are not associated with your Google Account, and the entire log entry is removed within 6 months. These logs are also governed by standard Google search logging policies.
>Google uses the logged and cached data to improve both Data Saver and Safe Browsing; for example, more effective optimizations can be uncovered by analyzing timing data for pages loaded through the proxy service, and malware can be detected more rapidly by analyzing response data in realtime.
>Your IP address is forwarded to the origin HTTP server via an X-Forwarded-For header, in accordance with the HTTP standard. The Data Saver service is a transparent proxy, not an anonymization service.
>By default, the connection between the browser and the Data Saver proxy is over an encrypted channel. However, a network administrator can disable the use of an encrypted channel to Data Saver.

SSL is for exactly that, but it assumes you're not giving the MITM full control of your connection by using their software to connect through their proxy.
>>
>>60547458

So what about logging in first then using it?
Or this will cause it to logout?

>>
>>60547534
VPN can't force you to use non-SSL connection to their server. Opera can. Chrome can too, but according to >>60547473
Chrome simply doesn't proxy SSL connections.

To my knowledge Opera however does.
>>
>>60547588
>VPN can't force you to use non-SSL connection to their server
So you mean VPN can only see the traffic but not the content?
How's this different than proxy connected to SSL site?
>>
>>60547635
It's not different from a proxy connected to SSL site at all. It's different from a built in proxy like that of Opera. Because the browser software has full control over the connections it's making, it can use 1 SSL connection with its own certs to connect to proxy server, which then decodes and re-encrypts the message for a second SSL connection with the origin server. Or it can send a HTTP request to proxy which then does a HTTPS request to origin server.

The difference is the software on client computer.

Minimize dust in the room, and place it further from the floor. If you're in an apartment without any forced air, a HEPA unit can cut airborne particulate by an order of magnitude. You'll still need to blow out the inside every year or two.

Some cases come with built in dust filters. this would be best case scenario, but there are aftermarket options for filters you can attach to case fans, though I don't know how big of an effect they'd have on airflow. You'd still have to clean the filters occasionally.

900p was useful for a lot of situations. Video content isn't specifically designed for 1440p, but that hardly matters. 144hz is a meme for almost all situations, but 1440p is golden. It's really the sweet spot resolutions should have aimed for, but it was easier for marketing to sell "4 times HD!!!". Otherwise step your monitors size down to at least 25 inch

The fact that nothing is designed to be looked at on a 1440p resolution personally.
>>

madvr is not very demanding nowadays. Try it at defaults and control dropped frames (CTRL+J) in MPC during playback. If you notice constant dropped frames then try setting "image upscaling" to dxva. Dont touch anything else from defaults.

Nothing like WHAT? You mean media? But you can use 1440p in games and you will benefit from it in desktop/app usage as well.
>>
>>60549697

Games and desktop applications are fine with it. For most nongaming shit 144hz is pretty much meaningless. 1440p is great across the board except with video. Video is the only thing pre-rendered in such a way that the exact resolution matters in the way you're thinking, and even then it barely matters.

If your onboard soundcard is awful, then yeah. It'll also reduce EMI from all the shit in your computer.

Many DACs also contain an amplifier, which is useful/necessary to drive high-impedance headphone. ATH-m50x are not high-impedance, so you won't really see much benefit on that front.

They are smaller than T laptops, can only use 1 drive instead 2.
You will be upgrading from a P8400 to a I5-2540m, which is a huge upgrade.
You will be able to use mSATA, and SATA3 so you can upgrade to a SSD.
Also X220 have IPS screen if you find your T61 screen shitty.
If you like the size of your T61 look for T420 instead.

Also weird, what are you doing for browsers to be lagging? a P8400 or P8600 should run Chrome or Firefox with no problems.
1080p or 720p@60FPS will be intensive for it tho so its normal you cant do multitasking.

A family member of mine just called me saying they watched their iPhone being remotely accessed without their permission.
Apparently, the remote accessor visited several URLs too fast to follow then did the same with the text app.
The scary part was next they opened the sticky notes app and found a sticky note that this family member had brilliantly stored every single username and password on (banks, credit cards, everything).
I looked around and could not find any news stories on similar attacks, any chance anyone here has any information on this or advice?
I told the family member to inform the bank and change every single password that was stored on the sticky note.
Thanks a ton for any help!!

Firstly, I was thinking about important maintenance cares that every computer should have, whether it's an Apple Lisa or a brand new gaming PC. Besides cleaning internals, making restoration points, backup of files and HD defragmentation, what other maintenance operations should I perform every now and then? Secondly, given all maintenance that I need to do to make sure all my computers are working at their best possible performance, I was also thinking to do everything in the same day to make it all the more efficient and effective. That being said, every how many X days should I make this major maintenance operation? I was thinking of every 100 days. Checks out?

Personally, I like doing a complete system wipe every year. I keep the needed drivers and whatever else in my backup to allow for easy wipe and reinstall.

Short answer to your question(s) is
>whenever you remember
Just use your computer knowing it is fully replaceable, and backup the things you can't afford to lose. Most common error is a drive failing, so backups tend to be the most important thing you can do.

Hey guys, long time user, but I finally found myself with a stupid simple question,
I'm going to be unable to use my computer for 6-10 years. Naturally I figured Id sell the desktop I built. Keep my x34 predator monitor or sell it. But my data is the concern, I have sensitive data I want to keep protected that I will be able to pick up where I left off after im back. My thought was to encrypt several drives with mirror copies of the data, and store them in physically different locations. One with my grandma for example, one in a safety deposit box, one with a friend I know I can trust, etc. My question is, should I do raid 1, or just simply copy and paste the drives manually. I will be encrypting them and thats a must, but I read somewhere that you cant encrypt raid1 without increasing failure risk massively.

tl:dr what is the safest way to cold store encrypted data over a decade without any use, with or without raid?

Why do you have all your fans at 100% anyways? Are you encoding or compiling all the time? Just set your CPU fan to auto so fan speed scales with temperature. You can have your case fans also follow this fan curve depending on how many 4 pin pwm your motherboard has.

And yes anything would be better than the stock Intel cooler. And fans are usually rate for hours. I.e. fan ABC is rated for 600k hours at 100% speed. Noctua fans are good, but so are the cougar vortex series which are cheaper. Or some of the fans from gentle typhoon. Or be quiet! Noctua isn't the end all be all.
>>
>>60553472
As I said, depends on encoder settings. If used at non standard sample rates MP3 can handle any frequency up to about .45 * sample rate.

I'll look into it more when I get home, but does anyone know what steps I need to take if I want to one-time install a package locally, but ultimately want to sync it up with the remote or AUR in Arch? I'm guessing I just need to make some changes to the package metadata to point it correctly or something.

As is any audio >20kHz. No point leaving it in if you can't hear it.
>>
>>60553674
just needs to be the same name

for example, if you make "myprogram 1.0", package it and install it locally, then put it on the AUR, nothing happens, but when you update it to 1.1, and push that to the AUR without installing it locally, your AUR helper will see that there's a newer version of "myprogram" on the AUR, and will offer to update it
as far as pacman is concerned, there's no distinction between "locally installed" packages and "AUR" packages

to make an example of something i did recently
i had mesa 17.0.4 installed, extra repo.
i wanted to try out the 17.1.0 release candidate, but not forget about it when 17.1.0 actually came out
so when i built a local version of it, i just named it 17.0.9, this way things like "17.0.5" won't affect it, and when 17.1.0 comes out, it will be upgraded automatically, since it's above the version i set

There's no reason one filetype would experience bitrot at a different rate than any other. Error correction is at the filesystem or OS level, and effects all types equally.

Is it possible to have an unstable internet connection when you're connect by ethernet on a shitty router?

My girlfriend has a very shitty modem/router provided by her ISP. It's from a brand I never heard of. The connection on her house is unstable as fuck either on cable or wireless.

I never got dropped packages on ethernet even on the shittiest routers I tried.

FLAC just has internal checksumming. All it will do is tell you when a file is fucked if you scan for fucked files. It won't do anything to prevent damage or repair fucked files. If you don't have an unfucked backup somewhere, you're boned anyway. You can easily do your own checksumming without having to download files at 3X the size.

i've got a pretty fety overclock on my R5 at the moment. it's running at about 4.2ghz, 1.4v.

the problem is the temperature will fluctuate 10 - 15 degrees just idling. the fans will speed up and slow down.

is this normal for such a huge overclock?

i did an overnight test with prime95 and it didn't crash or reach any high temps with my watercooling setup
>>
>>60554191

Well, it's one of those modem and router combo, so it can definitely be a problem. The ISP will probably be a pain in the ass to send a new one.

I can set the modem to bridge, will it work if I do that and add a better router?
>>
>>60554278
Switching off the routing functionality won't help if it's the modem functionality that's being shitty.

First thing you have to do is track down which part of the connection is the shitty one, is it the WiFi, is it the connection from ISP to modem, or is it inbetween?

You could write your own interpreter. There is nothing in infix that requires parentheses, write your statements in the correct order for your language's precedence rules and you're fine without, just like you would be with RPN.

Obviously that's not true. There's no way to be sure of that. I guess the question I'm asking would be "Is it putting my SSD in my computer with Win10 supposedly 'de-botnetted' or wiping it and installing another Win7 installation and spitting on the minimum amount of work he did to install it?"

Is Win7 less spyware-y than Win10? I'm kneejerking towards yes, but that's probably not true. And I also have the paranoid delusion that he installed some logging or backdoor shit before he gave it back to me and I'm wanting to nuke the drive anyway.

Is it worth reinstalling 7 again or is my tinfoil hat on too tight?

I'm pretty certain that my desktop computer is infected with a virus, and it runs slow as fuck now. I tried all types of virus scans and cleaners etc but i think it's like deep rooted or some shit.

Is there a way to complete reset my computer to maybe return it to normal? I don't care about saving anything on my hard drive, I just want to try and get my computer to function properly again.

install 8.1, don't update and enjoy the best of both worlds.

7 is outdated as fuck, but it's still better than 10. 8.1 is better than both.

unless you're one of those muh startmenu retards.

7 and 8.1 don't have telemetry out of the box, they patched it in last year with security updates. that's why i'm saying not to update, just make sure you don't get malware.

reinstall windows. that should get rid of 99.9999% of all malware.

>>
>>60555278
Format the drives and start over. Best option, really. If the malware survives nuking all the drives you're fucked unless you can hardware flash all your components. That type of malware isn't really common, so you're probably fine.

Which updates am I not installing? Is there a list somewhere? I really hate the metro interface but I can get past that since I needed it for the computers at my college and there's probably a way to roll it back. I just want to stay on a version of Windows that doesn't obsessively spy on me.

Year of the Linux gaymin machine fucking when? Might be worthwhile to fuck around in Linux again with Wine, since my new computer is probably an order of magnitude more powerful than the old one I could maybe get acceptable performance out of most of my games.
