Brand new motherboard with decent onboard sound card and getting good amp soon
>Type of headphone
Doesn't matter
>Open or closed
Doesn't matter either they're only going to be used at home
>Comfort level
Doesn't matter my ears are used to abuse
>Sound signature
Considering i'm kinda new at this and haven't ever tried decent headphones before i'll just mention the use here so
i suppose whatever delivers best on those catergories. First and foremost listening to music at loud volumes the
genres will vary from classical to electro to some metal varietions to modern orchestral(incorporates both orchestral
and electro sounds) and plenty of soundtracks all of which should have at least a 320kbps mp3 quality. Another very
important use for the headphones is going to be VR gaming on HTC VIVE and asmr so a good soundstage would be
very important.
>Past headphones
Shitty cheap headsets

So at this point i'm between hd 600 for 265€ or the hd 650 for 285€, many seem pleased with the hd 600 and might be
the headphones for me considering i don't know yet what kind of sound i like and people here claim they're good
all-rounders. Should i maybe consider a different brand at this price range? I just want to get to the end-game and only
have to think about upgrading again years later when i actually earn a decent living.

Also will a 20 year old good expensive amp that was mainly used for speakers but also has headphone 1/4 jack and
can connect to my motherboard be my end-game amp(not sure if it has dac included)? The thing is, schiit has 0 greek
sellers and when i cheked their prices they dont ship here or say they're out of stock, and e10k is a non end-game 100€
tier amp that just throws me way over my budget so i'd rather get my dad's used amp since he doesn't use it anymore.

HD600 are best regarded despite cheaper, so it's pretty much a no brainer. The HD650 are a slightly colored version that particularly favors bass and recesses treble.

Most reviewers that done both do prefer the HD600 and they're pretty much the only headphones you'll ever need.
>>
>>60464096

It's not very wide at all but if you like them, they're pretty good. K612 is the poor man's HD 600 with wide soundstage.
>>
>>60464034
>>60464220
I've personally used both 600 and 650, both are great.

I prefer the 650 but the 600 is close behind in my book; extraordinary headphones for the price either way
>>
Are the Monoprice Monolith M560 worth the price?
i currently have the beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus
>>
>>60464265
Hmm, so would this mean the hd 600s soundstage will be a poorer experience? I think for vr and ero-asmr use a wide soundstage would be rather important
>>60464286
Which one do you think has a better soundstage? Considering they only have a 20 price difference here.
>>
>>60464362
They're nearly identical
>>
>>60464362
What "wide soundstage" really means is colored (exaggerated) soundstage.

The HD600 is a neutral AF headphone which gives it to you as it is, including soundstage.

Of course it does not sound "artificially narrow" like closed headphones do.
>>
>>60464475
Agreed, the 600/650 can still sound very wide on tracks that purposely exaggerate the soundstage
>>
>>60464475
I see, i suppose hd 600 is the safest option then considering i don't know if i like the coloring of the hd 650
>>
>>60464658
Go for it, you really can't go wrong with either.

Just keep in mind they'll be a little tight when they arrive, give them a week or so to strech out.

Do /NOT/ strech the band at the top, bend the metal gently if you have to

I mean they're both pretty close in the FR graph. He's going to be using them for VR so immersion i would think would be a priority. My Superlux 681's sounded exaggerated while I had them though they were some of the cleanest headphones I've heard.
>>
>>60464769
>>60464362
I'd go with the *correct* soundstage of HD600.

What exaggerated soundstage will give you in VR is shit right next to you or right in front of you would sound as if it was FAR AWAY, which definitely you do not want.

Straight from your PC/Phone will be fine but you might benifit from one in the future. If you do order them wait a month or so and see if they're too quiet or have any distortion, then order something like the Fulla 2
>>
>>60465143
They don't need one but their electrical impedence and phase graph is all types of wonky. It'll improve in bass with an amp though doesn't need one to get loud or be driven properly.
>>
>>60465143
>Would I need an amp/dac for them?
No need (they'll sound good without, already), but having one would benefit you (they'd sound better). How much better will depend on your source.

Most smartphones have builtin amps these days, so you can play a youtube or something on them and compare with your computer.

Note many recent motherboards have a built-in headphone amp too, which should suffice. You'd typically get a dialog when plugging the headphones to a computer jack asking which type of headphone. The fullsized and/or automatic settings will enable the amp. This only helps in boards that actually have an amp. See your manufacturers' spec. Asus calls it something like crystal audio 2 and is explicit with the amp thing. Other brands have equivalent such commercial names for it.

Hey retards, what can you tell me about the KZ ZS3?
>>
>>60465366
Warmish-dark, great sub-bass, amazing fit, but shit stock cable.

They're good for the price, and even better if you get a silver ZS3 cable which are like $4 on eBay. Stock cable picks up a ton of noise from rubbing on clothes and stuff.

There are mods to remove some dampening foam to make them sound better too. Search for it on head-fi.
>>
>>60464034
I recommend the 650. I use mine for both music and vidya and it's great, especially for long sessions. The price difference between it and the 600 is probably because it has a nicer cable and a more sturdy headband.

Both of them should sound great on that tube amp, but if you want a good neutral solid-state amp+dac at some point, check out the audio-gd NFB-11. They'll ship it to you there

RHA MA750

I work in an extremely noisy environment where I need ear protection, at the moment I'm using my RHA MA750's to reduce the noise and listen to music while I work. I use these for 8 hours a day and they are fairly comfortable. Where they fall short is after a while my ear seems to get sweaty and they start falling out which leaves me with no ear protection until I completely dry out my ears. This usually happens at around the 4 hour mark. I'm using the plastic ear tips with these if that makes any difference. Now I'm considering buying regular full-size headphones or new IEM's that work in my noisy environment and will stay in my ear.

With the RHA MA750's I'm also able to still hear enough to talk to my coworkers without taking them out but I am able to drown out enough sound that I'm pretty sure it's safe for my ears, was hoping to find something similar, this however is not a major aspect and can be ignored. Thanks for any help.

I would like to have some pretty comfortable headphones, so sound quality is not as important to me.

Apple earbuds: These things really hurt my ears.
Monoprice 9927: Compared to the earbuds these ones sounded bad, but were slightly more comfortable.
Koss Porta Pros: I really enjoyed these and am not opposed to having headphones instead of IEM. I liked that these were comfortable and had pretty great sound.

The big issue I have with headphones is I tend to fuck up the cables and connector. I end up bending the connector and then I have to move the cable around to a certain position to have sound come out. This happened to my Porta Pros. I fixed the connector, but the cable is still kinda fucked.

I have a few questions
I got a 770 (250 Ohm) as my first high end cans, tried them for a couple of hours and they sounded worse than a 2$ earphone chink cable, my laptop couldn't drive them at all, bass was not existent and the songs sounded like whispers.
So I packed them and ordered a fiio e10, it's the cheapest amp, and was recommended everywhere (fulla was an option but it costs more than double the e10k to have it delivered to my country, not counting taxes)
The e10k definitely drives them like a champ, but they sounded so generic, I don't know how to describe it in an audiophile terms, but they were so boring and the sound was so boring.
I read about burn in, thought that was some kind of gimmick, so I left home today with a 12 hour playlist and returned and holy shit, these things sound much more fun, I never want to take them off, every things sounds much more clearer. the bass is heavier and the details are much clearer in all types of songs.
the e10 at half the volume sounds pretty loud, while having it at max at first didn't sound too loud.

final q:
h gain and l gain:
is there a point of using h gain ever?

sorry for the blog

Just got my Monolith M1060 and Monoprice 11567 combo. It's pretty great let me tell ya. The headphones themselves are comfy as fuck. And they sound amazing, a huge upgrade from Sennheiser HD598s and a Sound Blaster Z. Maybe it's just because I haven't heard $10,000 Stax or whatever, but I find it hard to believe it can get much better from here. Sure, the sound signature could change, but that's about it. These things sound so clear. Huge soundstage too. Only downside is spending $400 on headphones I guess.

Disagree on the sound, Grados sound superb and have a level of clarity that can actually make music that was recorded and mastered poorly completely unlistenable. Which you might say is a bad thing, but this 'issue' also means that optimally-recorded and mastered music sounds even better.

Noise cancelling, does it work? Will it let me actually shut out the fucking noise my neighbours are making?
I'm just about ready to pay out the ass for it, I have closed headphones which are isolating noise nicely but not nearly perfectly and no air is getting through there so long-term wear in the summer gets harsh
>>
>>60482558
> Will it let me actually shut out the fucking noise my neighbours are making?
No. Active noise cancelling headphones are only good at blocking drone noise like engine noise. Basically noise that is constantly repeated. It won't work against sudden burst like somebody shouting or glass breaking.
The best thing you can do is buy a pair of speakers and crank them loud to annoy them or buy headphones with a high clamping force and high noise isolation to block out as much noise as possible.
>>
>>60482597

Well the noise is either some asstard playing the radio loud, or constant noise like lawn mowers and shit.
More noise is hardly a solution to my problem, and the second option is basically what I have/do now.

HD600 aka the world's best headphone.

HD650 aka the world's 2nd best headphone.

If HD600 didn't exist I'd go with the HD650, it shits on everything out there.

An interesting thing about the HD650 that I've observed is that after a few minutes of having them on your head, your ears get adjusted to the 'timbre' of the headphones, and while the HD650 is warmer than the HD600, to your brain it sounds the same afterwards. I ended up returning the HD650 because there was no point in owning both and the HD600 was a tiny bit superior.

Just got my Philips SHP9500 in today that someone in here recommended to me the other day. I'm new to this whole headphones/caring more about audio thing, any recommendations/tweaks I should know about? I see in the 'Sound' properties I have a few options to mess with, such as Bass Boost, Headphone Virtualization, and Loudness Equalization. There's also a 'Spatial Sound' tab.
Could anyone give me the quick rundown on this shit/if I should mess with it? Or are these more just things I can mess with if I'm bored? I'm mainly curious about the Spatial Sound and if it's recommended I change that, my options are Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos.

Those just poopy audio software enhancements that come with (usually realtek) onboard audio chipsets. Pretty much all of them end up ruining the soundstage and audio quality, so don't use them.

The SHP9500 has plenty of soundstage from what I hear. If you want more bass, you should get something else, since these headphones are notoriously bass-light (even more than the hd598).

Postprocessing will:
- Degrade your signal.
- Have a CPU cost.
- Add latency.

You're better off without.

shp9500 have a smooth bass roll-off, so the compensating boost should be fairly smooth as well. it's also nowhere near as strong as it should be.
2 kHz is boosted for no good reason.
doesn't really deal with the 9 kHz spike.
etc.

i could make a better one in less time than it takes to explain everything that's wrong with it.

>Gotcha. CPU cost and latency make sense. I had no idea it'd degrade the signal as well. Good to know.
In the digital domain, all transformations to the audio data will degrade it. Sometimes it's desirable, but in the general case it is best to prevent unnecessary transformations .

A case where you'd get some benefit would be virtual surround in some scenarios. Such as playing a FPS game that supports 3d positioning but only with surround speakers, that is, if the game lacks its own virtual surround implementation.

Another classic case where it makes sense is ReplayGain.

Oh I also forgot to ask if it matters where I plug them in. so I have an old Logitech speaker system that has a volume knob with an aux jack, but I went ahead and assumed that would be a shit-tier idea. My monitor has an audio jack as well (HDMI to my GPU if that matters). I have a front jack on my PC as well as the jack on the mobo itself. I'm going to assume I want to connect as direct as possible. Does the front pc jack vs. the back jack matter at all?

Also, I know you all said to leave all those postprocessing shits off, but could someone tell me what the fuck the Spatial Sound shit actually is? This is the first time I've ever even seen that option available.
>>
>>60486481
>so I have an old Logitech speaker system that has a volume knob with an aux jack, but I went ahead and assumed that would be a shit-tier idea.
Aux is usually code for "line out", which do have high output impedance and different voltage range than headphones expect. Your headphones have a relatively low impedance, so with high impedance output the "damping factor" (headphone impedance/output impedance) will be very low. Shit tier is accurate.

You'd ideally want a headphone jack from a source that has a headphone amplifier. Many motherboards do have it these days. It'd be listed in the manufacturer specs so do check that. If not, do still use a headphone jack. It's not ideal, but it'll sound way better than line outs.

A common solution recommended here is to get a cheap usb-based headphone dac+amp, like the Fulla 2. These will simply sound good and pretty much be unaffected by what computer you connect it to.
>>
>>60486618
>usb-based headphone dac+amp, like the Fulla 2.

>Aux is usually code for "line out"
So follow up to this: is there a difference between a "headphone jack" and just the green colored port on a mobo/pc? Does a green jack stand for line out generally? I ask because it has a headphone symbol underneath it, but I'm not sure if that just means "usually people plug headphones into this" or "this is an actual headphone jack" like you were talking about in your post.

As for my motherboard, I looked up specs as you suggested, here's what I found on ASROCK's (z97 Extreme4) website-
>Purity Sound™ 2 includes 7.1 CH HD audio with Realtek ALC1150 audio codec, 115dB SNR DAC with Differential Amplifier, TI® NE5532 Premium Headset Amplifier, cap less Direct Drive technology, EMI shielding cover, PCB isolate shielding and DTS Connect. As Nichicon audio capacitors are what every audiophile has been longing for on a PC, ASRock applied these high quality capacitors for Purity Sound™ 2.

I honestly barely understand what any of that means. Will it work just fine for a beginner such as myself, or would there be a noticeable increase in quality if I picked up that Fulla 2 device you mentioned?

Also thanks for your posts so far, they've been quite helpful.
>>
>>60487072
>is there a difference between a "headphone jack" and just the green colored port on a mobo/pc?
Yes. Usually the "speaker out" (green) computer outputs are line outs.
These days, thanks to HDA and their jack rerouting magic, many ports can play different roles. It might be possible to have the green jack act as a headphone output.
>TI® NE5532 Premium Headset Amplifier
Seems like a headphone amp indeed. The difficulty here is which ports it can output to. In my board (crystal audio 2 or whatever), the green line out cannot, but the front panel headphone jack can.
When plugging something to a jack, some popup asks what kind of device it is. For headphones, there's a pic of full size vs earbuds. Full size seems to enable the amp. YMMV with your audio drivers. I believe it'll be the same, because mine is also realtek.

>>Sound signature
>warm, punchy bass without treble

>HD 598
Did you like HD598? If so go HD600.
If you MUST have some extra bass and darker (less treble) signature, then go with HD650. Just keep in mind the HD600 are better than HD650 after you get used to them. The whole bass thing is a lie, your brain will quickly get used to whatever sound you throw at it, and then the less colored headphone will always sound better, as coloration is distortion.
>>
>>60487167
I love them, the problem is they leak too much sound and so will HD 600 I assume.
>>
DAC X6 or Fulla2? Currently have 668B's and plan to upgrade to DT880's (250 or 600, not sure yet). Which speakers are better for a desk, (Mackie CR3/4 or LSR305's)? any better options for either DAC/AMP or Speakers would be great, thanks.
>>
>>60487126
>the green line out cannot, but the front panel headphone jack can.
That's actually really interesting to me. One would assume it'd be the other way around.
>When plugging something to a jack, some popup asks what kind of device it is.
That's interesting, as I have not gotten that popup. When I go into my Playback devices, it does in fact have a large headset icon, as well as saying it's a "High Definition Audio Device", though I'd say that's pretty meaningless, as my shitty 10 year old speakers are also apparently a "High Definition Audio Device" as well.
>>
>>60487194
Yes, the HD600 do leak a load of sound too.
This is only true at unhealthy high volume, however. And they do indeed sound better the lower the volume; It just takes a while to get used to them.
When I got mine, with Magni2, I used them at high gain past 12 o'clock. Now, after a few weeks, I'm at low gain below 12 o'clock and very happy.
If this is an issue (main use is room with other people), you should go with something closed, such as the HD380 Pro. Just keep in mind that closed headphones will sound significantly worse /price.
>>
>>60487242
>That's actually really interesting to me. One would assume it'd be the other way around.
It will depend on the board. Mine is shitty like that. On the green jack, I still get the options, but they do sound the same (bad).
>>
>>60487242
>as my shitty 10 year old speakers are also apparently a "High Definition Audio Device" as well.
HDA is the name of the soundcard standard most boards use these days. It supports some fancy shit like jack rerouting, but in exchange it's complex AF with very different implementations and a fucking mess to use (from a driver programmer perspective)
In the old days, it used to be ac97, which was way simpler but also less feature happy.
