>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500X - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you don't want to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good; may have heat issues even at stock clocks
>R7/Xeon - compute/MEGAtask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for LoL, dota2, rocket league, etc
>1050Ti/RX560 at ~$105. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings for some games
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider only if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA)
>1070 - 1080p@144hz/1440p@100+hz
>1080 - 1080p@90-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings
>Freesync2 & Vega soon

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>Go mATX form factor for cheaper board+case
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>Good air cooler is almost always wiser than an AIO

Does the Ryzen 5 1600x come with a shitty chipset like Intel or do I need to buy a graphics card?
>>
Where do I buy linux???
>>
>>60458704
AMD's apu's are pretty much the best out there. Intel literally signed a deal a few months ago to have AMD produce all their igpu's.

Anyways no, none of the zen chips are apu's, you have to wait until octoberish before those versions come out (pinnacle ridge or something)
>>
>>60458704
No, Ryzen 5 and 7 do not have an integrated iGPU.
>>
>>60458729
>none of the zen chips are apu's
Wrong, the R3 series is all APUs
>>
>>60458730
>integrated iGPU.
ah yes, they do not have integrated integrated graphical processing unit
stupid me
>>
>>60458707
is this a troll?
Linux is free and open-source. There's no place to buy it and about a zillion different versions you can download for free.
>>
>>60458729
>>60458730
Well that's a fucking shame.
>>
>>60458777
Ryzen 3 that's coming out soon will have an integrated Vega GPU
>>
My Ryzen 1600 came yesterday. I checked if everything is okay and I noticed there something on my thermal paste. It's a little grain of dirt or something. I guess I should be able to remove it without touching the thermal paste. Should I remove that dirt or should I just remove whole thermal paste and get a new one?
>>
my current setup:
i5-6400
gtx 1060 6gb
corsair vengeance lpx 2400mhz 8gb single channel
asus h110m-e m2
samsung evo 850 256GB m2
xfx xt500

should i consider selling my current setup and move to amd ryzen and rx580?
>>
>>60458847
it'll still be fine even with the dirt thing
could you send a picture of it?
you should buy thermal paste anyway because it's always handy to have and pretty cheap

>>60458851
>rx 580
no. The GTX 1060 performs almost the same, that would be stupid. We're talking 2% difference on average.
The jump between i5 6400 to r5 1600 isn't big, it might be worth but only if you can sell it + the mobo (+ the ram if it's ddr3) at a good price.
Don't sell the rest (case, hard drive / ssds) regardless.
And don't sell the whole computer, that is very cost unefficient because it includes things that you can keep (ram if ddr4, case, hard drives, card graphics) but will have to re-buy at full price.
>>
>>60458851
Not at all.
>>
>it hurts when IP
you fucker

>8Hz WAN IP
>>
>>60458847
better safe than sorry. remove the thermal paste and add new stuff when the time comes.
>>
>>60458913
>could you send a picture of it
Right now I can't but I'll post it here later once I get home.
>>
>>60458851
No, it would be a sidegrade at best
>>
>>60458913
>>60458938
>>60458981

thanks for the suggestion. i'm never an avid amd user, and considering the r5 1600 is on same range with my i5 price wise, but providing additional core and clockspeed. the difference is only $50 or less. i'll try to keep my current setup for this whole year and maybe considering proc+mb upgrade to ryzen 5 1600 next year.
>>
Well... I make a similar PC and the budget is like $900 but adding monitor and case and stuff, mostly for videogames, ue4 development, and recording games
>>
Nvidia shills, why a 1060 vs a 480
>>
The reference 480 looks way cooler desu
>>
Wtf Nvidia cards look like shit
580 it is I guess
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/y6MCPs
Note: I have no intention of making this, ever.
This build was just for shits and giggles to see what the cheapest usable Ryzen based PC would be. I think for the price, this setup would monster a G4560 with a 1050ti
>>
>>60459065
drop the SSD & put an RX 470 instead
The 1050ti outperforms the rx 460/560, so you'd end up with less fps
>>
>>60459091
>drop the SSD & put an RX 470 instead
RX470 blows the budget. Trying to keep the build as close to $500 as possible while being USABLE this isn't about maximum framerates. It's about something usable for entry level gaming. Though I took the advice with the SSD.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fcfdPs
>>
>>60459132
isn't it at around $170?
and blows the 1050ti even
>>
>>60459139
>isn't it at around $170?
yes, but I'm not sure how much more would be able to be sacrificed to keep the cost down without stepping to the G4560.

Again. no intentions of building this. just s hits and giggles. pure hypothetical.
I've got a personal build planned out with a R5 1600 and an RX570.
>>
>>60459165
managed to drop the price below $500 by switching to a non-modular PSU.

So i asked about the ASRock AB350M-HDV in the other thread but didn't have a chance to reply before bumplock

Basically i just plan on using it in conjunction with a Ryzen 1400, not overclocked, so the lack of heatsinks and whatnot shouldn't be a problem right? Like i said i basically only do some gaming (bf1 et al) and video editing and stuff

Also what would be a good alternative AM4 motherboard in that same price range? Keep in mind once i've made the switch to AM4/ryzen i plan on staying there for as long as i used am3

first real hot day where I live, summer is coming, my pc is cooking without my two 120mm stock fans going ham while the cpu is under load and I need to prepare.

my question is, are premium fans worth the extra cash in the opinion of the people on /g/? I was thinking about getting two Rosewill 140mm fans for $11 from newegg and place them in the front of my p400s. thoughts? any recommended fans?
>>
>>60459210
Getting a $25 CPU cooler would have more impact than case fans no matter the number.
>>
Thoughts? Were unable to find any reviews on that RAM but what could go wrong?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DLDj9W
>>
>>60459210

if your CPU is hurting that much, buy an AIO

140mm fans will pump more air (and be quieter at idle and at load)
>>
>>60459241
got that covered, I have an H7 in there cooling the i5
>>
>>60458766
>Bait face plant

Of course it's a troll you autist, and I'm not even the guy who posted
>>
>>60459271
Oh, then do get fans then. Do get 140mm ones.
>>
>>60459271

then why are you worried about temps if you have such a 'great' cooler?
>>
Shiiiiiit

Just found out silent wings 3 have some noise close to coil whine.
What do I do now?

Are there any other good fans? No noctua memes.
>>
>>60459283
really my question was not answered, is something like corsairs Air Series fans, that much better over discounted stock fans, that I should shell out the extra cash for them? sorry, but I would really like the input from anyone reading this

>>60459285
maybe I was a bit misleading, my problem is less about temps, and more about "my cpu cooler is loud and I can't dump enough air into the case with my single 120mm fan at low rpm to keep it quiet". I hope I'm making sense, cause I'm kind of tired right now.
>>
>>60459352

buy a corsair h115. enjoy your low temps.
>>
>>60459360
You want me to put a rad + 2 fans as as case fans?
That's both extremely cost ineffective, and horrible airflow.
>>
>>60459373

um, who cares. your motherboard will be fine because of all the surface area and your CPU will never hit 60c.

But you kiddies can keep thinking that the AIO radiator is somehow worse than not getting air to that little heatsink.

any that's still being fully supported by Microsoft, if you don't like it, go to linux. Honestly I would go with 10 because at least I know I'm under their full protection, god knows if that actually means anything but jack shit.

I'm trying to put together my first build. Is it normal if nothing really makes sense and I'm kind of just picking expensive things seemingly at random?

Having a bit of a dilemma, I'm saving money for a mortgage (London isn't cheap), mostly use PC for surfing/gaming, but I'm having to set most newer games to Low to get consistent +60 fps at 1080p. Current specs:

i5 3570K
Radeon 7950
8gb ram

Should I go all out with my planned mobo, ram and ryzen 1600 build (bearing in mind it'll cost me around £850 and I'm trying to save up), or can I get a radeon x570 or something to keep me over 60 fps at 1080p on high/ultra settings and leave the rest of the build as it is?

I'm stuck between wanting a good new build and being mature, frugal and within my means

There's a big AMD update for RAM compatability, which will allow all RAM to clock as normal.

The problem is if the system can't boot with the ram, because then you won't be able to get the bios updates.
>>
>>60459875
I'm gonna laugh when these turn out to be the best boards for am4 by a long shot. Full RAM support straight to 4200, two nvme's without cutting into the pcie lanes, crossfire support, and x370 tier VRM's

all of it for cheaper than the regular x370's
>>
>>60460226
Cant you just under clock the RAM from the BIOS, boot, install the update, and then set the clock to normal?
>>
>>60460302
that's generally how it works
>>
>>60460133
Do you play anything competitively, and is that competitive game dependent on sub 150ms reflex, and are you in the 90th percentile in performance of those who play that game competitively?

If the answer to all that is yes, then no 144hz is not a meme, buying a 144hz monitor is buying skill. You'll immediately see the difference in input lag and your own response time to things happening in-game and you will wonder how the everloving fuck you could have possibly played at a lower refresh rate before. You'll never be able to go back.

If the answer is no, then yes 144hz is a meme, you'll never notice anything significant between it and 120hz or even 60hz. Things will look a bit smoother to you; whoop-dee-doo.
>>
>>60460302
Don't think you can even get into BIOS if your mobo refuses the RAM.
>>60460256
Crossfire/SLI support would be difficult with only one PCI-e lane though... I guess APU "crossfire" could be a thing.
>>
>>60460380
>If the answer is no, then yes 144hz is a meme, you'll never notice anything significant between it and 120hz or even 60hz.
Bruh, the difference in smoothness is supposed to be pretty big.

Old 60hz CRTs used to have a visible flicker to them, that's how little 60hz is.
>>
>>60460226
Not all RAM

currently the fastest you can get, even if your RAM is working 100% fine, is 3200mhz. This is because that's the highest multiplier AMD's allowed.

Getting faster than 3200mhz requires a base clock overclock.

The upcoming update is rumored to include bigger multipliers so shit can support faster than 3200mhz ram, but don't hold your breath or expect anything more than 3200.

Is it just where I live or are silver rated PSUs completely extinct? The only ones I can find are EVGA Bronze at 500-600W and Seasonic Gold 650W that cost twice that, and I don't really need more than 500W. That EVGA PSU can't be that unreliable, right? The one I have in my current PC, some Antec Truepower 650W has lasted me 4 years of heavy use without any problems.

And maybe a retarded question but do I need to buy one of these to get Wifi when I build a new PC? I currently have one of those Asus Wifi antennas but it's super inconsistent and sometimes drops out completely.

If you want to overclock your CPU then you need to make sure the mobo is overclockable, and then even it is some are better than others.

And if you plan on keeping it for a long time then in the future you might want to get a little more performance out of it
>>
If I am poor as fuck and only play games that are not really heavy (dota 2/CS:GO), would a g4560 + rx 550 combo suffice?
>>
>>60461061
silver is just more power efficient
yes, you'll need a PCIe wifi card unless the motherboard specifically states it has wifi. Most don't. Make sure you have a free PCIe slot for it
There's a lot of PCIe1x wifi cards, look into it
>>

Have you looked into the price of 1050ti? RX 550 is more suited for people who will buy Ryzen 3 because it lacks iGPU and RX 550 seem to be just as strong as an iGPU(which the g4560 has). Unless you will really just play Dota 2 and CS:GO save the money as g4560's iGPU will suffice but if not, try the 1050ti, because at the very least it will let you play other games in decent settings.
>>
>>60461227
You could probably make do with the iGPU on the G4560 if you play the games on lower settings

Im trying to choose a nice, small portable mITX case. I didn't like Lian-Li or Cooler Master's options because of their low airflow. Could any of you Anons share your opinions on which one of these cases to get? I picked these cases based on size, airow, and portablility.

Fractal Design Node 202
+
>smallest
>average price
-
>shitty cable management
>small coolers only

Silverstone SG13 and SG05
+
>relly cheap
>can use AIOs
-
>virtually no cable management
>boxy

Corsair 380T
+
>best airflow (tons of fan mounts and space)
>decent cable management
>atx psus
>room for big HSFs and custom loop
>handy carrying handle
>cool design
>easy to access
-
>expensive
>bulky
>gaymen aesthetics

If you dont see a case you like on here, its probably because it was bigger and had no big advantages (e.x: The Milo and The Raven are like bulky node 202s), was some impossible-to-get overpriced crowd funded case(e.x: The Zaber Sentry costs almost $250 and takes half a year to ship), or it was had major flaws (e.x: Most Prodigys arrive broken in shipping).
>>
>>60461272
Yeah, it's at least double the price of an RX 550. A friend of mine also recommended the 1050ti but because of the price I might not be able to get it.

>>60461274
It seems I have missed the part in OP where it says g4560's iGPU can cover CS:GO and Dota 2, but what I'm actually thinking about is whether the iGPU of g4560 can maintain a decent FPS on a 1080p monitor.
>>
>>60461341
>Yeah, it's at least double the price of an RX 550. A friend of mine also recommended the 1050ti but because of the price I might not be able to get it

Double the price? Isn't rx 550 about $80 and the 1050ti around 110-120? Where the fuck do you live.
>>
>>60461341
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmYRKi-x4Aw

At 720p it works but 1080p is pushing it. But the RX550 is very overpriced for what you're paying for when you can get a 560 or 460 for just slightly more.
>>
>>60461412
Philippines, you would be surprised on how the prices here are really fucked up specially on NVidia GPUs, the 1050ti is almost 200 usd.

>>60461433

>>
>>60461525
It depends on what it costs over there but here the RX460 is literally cheaper than the RX550 and the 480 is almost cheaper than the 570 so it's just not worth it. AMD really dropped the ball on the pricing of the 5xx series, I hope they'll bring down the prices soon because this just doesn't make sense at all.

Nah. Generally it's just fine to use a chinese USB wifi transceiver with antenna thing.

Hey pcbg
My new ryzen build bootloops 5 times before booting up normally.
After tweaking with the bios for a while I changed the RAM frequencies from the "OC" 3000 to the default 2133 and the bootloop stopped. My system would only recognize the memory at 2400 at max anyway.

I already uodated my bios, I'm on a AsRock B350m Pro4 and my ram has XMP 2 which was what I had enabled and atomatically set the "OC" and RAM voltages.

How can I make this work?
>>

You lost the silicon lottery or bought shitstix. wait a month and there should be another BIOS update that fixes the RAM bullshit for everybody
>>
Well now that I have this old i5-2500k and 4x4GB of good RAM, I'm thinking I want to make a mITX box out of it using the iGPU.
Maybe a NAS? I could get a 4-10TB HDD to combine these 2 1TB HDDs I had. But I don't think I want to get a 2 TB SSD, for it.

Predominately, I want to keep it around to use to test software since it's a common CPU. I'm making a game and I'd like to have it running on an i5-2500k iGPU. At least at 15fps I guess so it'd run on something twice as good well.

I also have a full ATX PSU I can use.. but I guess I could buy a new picoPSU. I do really want a small box since I might end up with 3 if these testing machines, and only one of which would have a dGPU.
Maybe I'll get a larger box for a dGPU for this one.. like a RX550.

But case suggestions then? What's the smallest size for a full ATX PSU and a small dGPU?
I could go with SFX PSU instead if it makes more sense, though.

>>60458745
Again, there is no evidence of that.

On the contrary, in the shareholders call Lisa Su said that the Ryzen APUs would be A-series APUs and the ones without iGPUs would be Athlons and not Ryzen.
It sounds to me that they'll have less L3 cache.

Idk. My 7970 was bottlenecked by my i5-2500k in some newer games with how it stuttered. A 1050Ti is similar performance in some cases. But it shouldn't be that bad.

Despite that cherry picked benchmark in >>60459774, the RX550 can be as fast or faster in newer games and still fine in older games. I would get that if it's significantly cheaper. But get the 1050Ti if they're around the same price.

>>60459870

Why are people even recommending the R5 1400 or 1500X? They're both 4 cores split into two complexes, it's pretty fucking trash. If you're going ahead buying a 4 cores processor then get an Intel one at least, or better, simply get a 1600.

These two CPUs are the worst of the worst.

Make sure you really can make use of all those cores, consider fan over watercooling at that price range, at that price might as wll as go taichi otherwise get a cheap b350 it will overclock just fine. Change memory to a 2x8gb 3200mhz kit, drop the hdd for a 250/500gb ssd if over budget and buy hdd later on, would wait for vega if i were you considering you are on a budget and cheaper monitors for amd gpu's, PSU overkill either spend less on a 600-650W seasonic one or pay similarly for a better quality evga with less W.

Raijintek Metis, but requires modding.

The case is completely symmetrical (with the exception for two screw holes, may need something like a glues pistol for it), so you can swap the internals.
Put the GPU at the bottom, cut two holes at the very bottom, and mount 2x 120mm fans there, as intakes. Then you cut a hole to the right of the motherboard tray, and mount the PSU there. You'll have room for a few 2.5" drives, if you take them onto the case/PSU.

For the CPU cooler, you can put it as exhause, or as an intake. The thing I'd worry about if I had it as an intake is too much positive pressure, which means that air flow will be impeded. To solve that, you can drill another 120mm holes at the top, and fit in a couple of slim 120mm fans, as exhaust (I don't like this, because I think it ruins the appearance of the case).

Imo Raijintek Metis is the best and most available SFF case on the market.
It can fit 160mm CPU coolers, 265-270mm (not sure exactly) GPUs.

Ok... Do you think 4k will become the standard relatively soon?

Sure, that's one hell of a card, but there's soon new architecture coming out... And why would nVidia push out so many cards? Maybe just plain greed of one upping their customers... Well it's worth it since you can get a 40-75hz range one for around $105.
If any game is shittily optimized and drops down to 50fps, it helps there in addition to being 75hz instead of 60 which is 25% better and a lot smoother.

That's because none of the current interfaces can push that much data. The highest you're going to see right now until new specs come along is 4k at 120hz

My 1600X is in the low 40s with two twitch streams decoding off it along with a game that doesn't take many resources. So about 15% CPU.
It's probably not going to be lower with all cores clocked to 3.7GHz unless you turn up your fan curves.

I have a pretty important question

My friend's hard drives wouldn't be read when he built his new PC, and when he put his old PC back together with all his old parts, his drives still wouldn't be read

So now his drives just don't work. I'm just guessing, but when he first built his new PC, he used the power supply cables from his old power supply, not his new one. Could that have shorted the drives?

Can using power supply cables from a 650w PSU for a 850w PSU wreck the drives?
