If I'm looking for general purpose headphones (mostly for video and some music) what would I be best off with?

AKG 612 + amp
Sennheiser 598 w/o amp
AKG 7xx w/o amp

I'd like to stay around $150 but I'm willing to make the sacrifice for the 7xx if I can get by without an amp.

I kind of doubt it, but it can be. Sennheiser just recently started with closed back and those are on lower level while this will be top of the line. Biggest obstacle however is that if it is a closed back, that would mean that Sennheiser redid the headphone, probably from ground 0. You can't just slap a closure onto the HD8xx cups that also give a specific resonance that needed resonator and some damping to kill. However, HD820 the cups are larger, so they probably redesigned it's structure. Maybe it's semi open, maybe it's open but grill is more dense or some shit, or maybe it's an improved HD800 but with more relaxed and 'neutral' sound of HD600 which would be ebin.

What I am more interested in, if it will be Sennheiser's first planar. Hoverer, it's HD820, not 900 or 1000 that would be suitable for new technology, and those cups are still hollow while planars cups are always flat.
>>

I got my HD650 for $300 new last month, and don't regret it one bit

Besides, I highly doubt they will sell the 6XX for $200 again. That was a limited run of only 5,000 to create a huge buzz. Next drop will most likely be something like $250+ now that there's a high demand (over 55,000 individual requests by people with accounts on Massdrop)

They basically admit that it will cost more, unless they're trying to win brownie points by saying it will likely have to go up in price and they just managed to convince Sennheiser to keep it down, because they're so 'for' the community.

He's right, though.

/hpg/ has been an HD600/HD650 circlejerk for ~a month and a half or so. While I'm not going to argue that the two of them aren't timeless classics (because they really are), they have been the flavor of the month as well. Something else will come along and people that have HD600/HD650s will continue to enjoy them regardless, but there's room for all different kinds of headphones.
>>
>>60138711
It's been like that for a whole lot longer than a month and a half. There has been on and off bickering between Beyerfags and Sennfags for years, only in the last year and a half did the AKGbabies who were basically shunned to irrelevance have started piping up (but really it's just one the samefag K340 owner and always has been. You know the one who screams Belgium or whatever it was)
>>
>>60138727

Fanboys gonna fanboy, sure. It's been really bad with the HD600/HD650 posting though. It's okay, I'm sure if I fanboy'd over what I like I'd be shunned for being an audiofool, so I'm just gonna stay in my corner and enjoy what I enjoy. People get too damn worked up treating /hpg/ or any other place on the web like it's the frickin' gospel.
>>
>>60138769
People who actually care about their audio equipment being neutral will be laughing at HD600 shills while their Etymotic eardildos blast shitty anime music right at their eardrums while others who have found their sound signature preferences will also be listening to their music.

Can't you see the entertainment value in the shills repeating the same shit over and over while exposing their lack of knowledge on the subject?

Why do you guys use flange tips? Foam has better noise isolation and is more comfortable. Only downside is that it gives inaccurate bass response.

I've got a pair of re-400 I really like, currently stuck with a pair of cheap Sony headphones, don't know the model, the cheap on ear like 20 buck kind. Love the hifi man's, sonys are good for what they are. Had a pair of nvx xpt100s, liked those a bit but the sound always seemed a bit dull, not sure how to describe it.
Looking for something I can put on and just sit and listen to music with, don't need to be good for gaming or anything else, just enjoying music. Mostly I listen to metal, after that progressive rock, classic rock, jazz, and folk. Looking for something that lets me come home after a long day and just lets me sit back and enjoy
Any ideas or pointers?

Sorry you're treble sensitive friend.

The treble might be harsh if you're listening to electronic music or something, I've never tried.

662 Evo are good closed headphones, but they might not have the sound signature you want, they're pretty neutral while you'll most likely want v shaped
I'd say spend the extra buck & get Hyperx Cloud 1 (core optionally if you don't want velour pads. It's cheaper in some places) or takstar pro 80
they're the same headphone, but the cloud has a detachable mic and the pro 80 isn't findable everywhere. Prices vary depending on where you live, but I got the clouds for 60.

>>
>>60145785
It's not hard to get right, it's just that nobody really cares, the market is too caught up in the audio jewelry thing.

Only a small number of autists care about neutral sound reproduction. A niche within a niche.
>>
>>60146013
>It's not hard to get right

There is no perfect headphone, so it's clearly hard.
>>
>>60146040
On what basis do you define perfection?
>>
>>60146165
Perfection would be being unable to tell if you're hearing a recording or live music. But then you'd need a "perfect recording".
>>
>>60146203
No that sounds horrible. Perfection means that what you're hearing through your headphones is exactly what the original sound engineer of a song had in mind when he mastered the song.
>>
>>60146165
Well, being able to say that every single part of the headphone sounds good, i.e the bass, mids, treble etc. Every single headphone has an obvious fault in this regard. The 600's could have more bass (though I still love them) the highs could be better on the 800 etc etc.

If a thousand pound headphone can't fucking get it right then pretty much nothing will.

That's an overstatement, it just has more bass and lower midrange OR it has less upper midrange and treble response, it can be perceived many different ways since the HD650 is shelved in comparison to the HD600 but both have the same octave roll off in the bass.

HD650 just sounds a bit warmer in comparison, not night and day like some autists think.

It doesn't. Most people jerk off too much to a flat sub-bass response but it doesn't make much of a difference in real world listening. For HD600 to truly be neutral it needs a treble lift. But one can argue that lifting the treble further would turn it into a bright headphone even though it's technically neutral. See ER-4B for example.

Sure, if your source is not analog in the first place. Chances are it is. Headphone jacks tend to output analog.

An *amp* would benefit you, as HD598/599 have weird and very pronounced impedance vs freq. A good test is, if it sounds very different after making the volume aproximatelly the same between two different sources (like phone and computer), at least one of them is wrong, and you'd benefit from an amp.

The Schiit Fulla 2 is an amp+dac(usb) with excellent specs, additional inputs and outputs, and very affordable. It's probably the only such device you'll ever need.

Too much shilling, anon. Too much shilling.

Some poor anon was asking for closed-back headphones a few threads ago; he was recommended HD 600s. Didn't help that none of the recommendations were that good either.
>>
>>60147123
e10k if you want. But you honestly dont need one.

Are the AKG K240s any good for a cheaper pair of headphones?

$0.02 cents was deposited into your account.

That's silly, but still, if he bought it, I'm sure he doesn't regret it one bit despite the fact he wanted closed.
>>60147251
I'm just a happy Fulla 2 & schiit uber stack owner. I've had the chance to play with similarly priced devices, and I am confident enough to recommend schiit over these.
>0.02 cent.
If I was a paid shill at that pay, that'd be a pretty sad life.

/g/ hpt used to be an objective place where there weren't any head-fi tier buzz words or low-effort shills

now it is the total opposite where autists somehow recommend you to EQ $100 headphones to give them the clarity of a $1000 headphone

But that's possible. Why do people get butthurt over that one anon's statement?

Can you show me a guide to make my DT770s sound like DT1770s without having to upgrade?

Kek. It's almost like you can't eq for shit. I bet you spent $400+ on something that sounds worse than my $70 pair of eq'd headphones.

Pic related.

They are decent if you have a low output impedance source.
Also spare parts are cheap and easy to come by.

I literally have $250 headphones that are considered flay by a lot of people, and they have next to no soundstage. I use a solid state 'cheap' amp and I hate 99% of anime

You fucking kill yourself you retard. You don'y belong in this general. Go back.

I'm not sorry and I don't think they're neutral, i n fact I didn't even say the word. I said that others here find them flat.

Their blend is what makes them sound so nice. Keep going though, I'm sure you'll feel good about your headphones if you keep going.

Just added a subwoofer to my speakers. Man, fuck headphones. Now I'm going to regret working in the office and having to use the inferior option.

I suspect it's because of the release of the HD 599

I'm trying to find headphones that have filled out earpads rather than the usual donuts. Is there a term they are coined with so it's easier to find them? I had a pair of sony headphones, though I can't remember what they were called, that were great on my head and didn't give me headaches no matter how tight they were.

Yes that's it. I got two of them for $40 each years ago but it seems they're no longer manufactured so the price shot up. Haven't been able to find headphones that are as comfortable on big ears like those.
