dumb question inbound

i was given a w530, i replaced the HDD with my SSD

I was getting boot issues related to some strange SSD, turns out theres a 16gb module plugged into the m2sata port or whatever it's called.

Unplugged it and now no problem.

But now i'm wondering, Is there any reason in the world as why i would still use that small "boost ssd", when i replaced the HDD with an actual SSD?

Is it better to just set it up as a little encrypted drive for bank documents and shit?

I think it has something to do with some intel speed boot shit.

and random sidenote:
TO ANYONE WONDERING
YES, CHANGING THE THERMAL PASTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

On my t420 artic ceramic knocked temps down an average of 8c

not sure if the factory paste is shit, shit because it's old, or shit because they used a fuckton.

eh why not

w530 in the dock
t420 up front
t43 on the right

The *30 series imho feels as good as the *20 series, i think *40 and up starts to feel like shit

but that being said, there is a MASSIVE difference of quality between the t43 and the t420

I've dropped my t420 on a industrial carpet floor, and only broke my ultrabay lock clip which was able to be snapped back in.

I was worried, but this t43?
I feel i could deliberately drop this bitch .

(sadly i'm low on money atm, what's the typical selling price for the t43?)
>>
Hey, i was thinking about getting a t420, and do some light Photoshop and Vegas work there. I just read online tough, that the intel hd 3000 doesn't have dedicated memory, and that worries me.

Im not going to render 4k, or even 1080p videos, or use Photoshop to do heavy work, just basic card/editing stuff, but im worried if the t420 can actually handle it.
>>
>>59938309
So get a t430 instead.
It's not much more expensive, is it?
>>
>>59938309
it really cant, the intel GPU sucks

make sure it comes with the nvidia 4200m dedicated card and at a minimum the i5-2520 (its the same speed as the other i5, but has the same cache as the i7 that was offered so it runs a bit snappier)

It's fine for photoshop work, but i was getting slightly frustrated working with aftereffects with only a few layers, but i was working with 1080p XVAS video from my a6000.

You might want to look into a t430 or a w530 for a bit more power

They did come as an option on all laptops, but when searching ebay, theres a 8/10 chance it has the better specs if it has the fingerprint reader.
>>
>>59938111
there is a bios setting to do this.
>>
>>59938111
There is an option to swap it in the BIOS.

t. T450s owner.
>>
>>59938364
I just did a quick search, the intel hd 520 that comes in the recent skylake processors, actually get their memory from the main RAM.

If the hd 3000 did the same (I don't know if it works this way too), i wouldn't mind settling for the t420, as i planned to upgrade him with 2x 8gb.
>>
some marketplace seller on newegg has the W530 for $500. Tis refurbished but good anyway?
>>
>>59938538
only settle for the t420 with the dedicated gpu
it makes a serious difference
>>
>>59938559
Can't find any t420 with dedicated GPU.

I was actually interested in falling for the 420 meme, but if i wouldn't be able to work well with it, i might as well do as >>59938338 says, and get the t430.
>>
>>59938309
Get a W520
>>
>>59938627
Wait, were you actually gonna get it just because it's called 420?
>>
>>59938151
I'm also wondering this. What's usually the battery time on them and/or the 6-cell ones from AliExpress?
>>
>>59938675
No, because people here recommend it a lot. And i suppose it's still a great notebook, despise that, but i need one to at least cover these basic work.
>>
>>59938764
Most of the Thinkpads /g/ recommends aren't meant to do anything other than browse /g/ and do light text editing. I jest, slightly, but really 2 cores are a joke for any even semi-serious post production work.

W520 is probably what you're looking for.

Do you guys think it's a good idea to have a X230 constantly hooked up to two 1920x1080 monitors for /g/ shitposting and youtube videos? I'm concerned that it will shorten the laptop's lifetime drastically due to high load/heat.

>>
>>59942618
The plebs here are too plebby to do the EC flash to enable the xx20 keyboard on the xx30, so they erroneously recommend the older models.

Personally I've found, assuming the best OEMs for each model (since they're all multi-sourced), that the xx30 island keyboard feels slightly better in terms of its key travel/actuation than the older keyboard, which I personally think is a much greater advantage than the slightly inferior layout. Who cares about a few 11 row keys that you'll rarely use when your keyboard feels sub-optimal.

>>
>>59942742

>>
>>59942663
>multi-sourcing

This pisses me off so much.

My dad's T410s had a beautiful, crisp feel to the keys and was a joy to type on. My W520, when it first came, had a more imprecise and mushy feel. And they're the SAME FUCKING PART. It was the same deal on my T61 before; I wrecked the keyboard with coffee and ordered a replacement that felt noticeably worse then I salvaged a keyboard from a T60 and it's was better than the one that was there in the first place.

In the end it worked out because my dad uses an external keyboard so I just asked him if I could swap the T410s keyboard with the W520 one and everything is great now. But you think Lenovo could get some fucking consistency. They do this shit with their screens too; some have pulse-width modulation with shit viewing angles and others do not. Whichever you end up with ultimately comes down to luck.
>>
>>59942742
I had this with my T400. Turn the machine off, take the battery out for half an hour and plug it back in. Fan error will probably go away.

>>
>>59942840
Why would you want to stop your fan from spinning?
>>
>>59942663
It seems that the main reason for people to recommend the xx20 over the xx30 is "muh keyboard" and "muh lack of whitelists" but it looks like there are methods to switch the keyboards AND you can flash the bios for them too
>>
>>59942838
Alright thanks I'll try this.

Honestly though the fan might be dead, it's been acting funny for the past couple days. Blowing hard for a minute on idle, then doing nothing. Only did it when I was running Windows, Ubuntu was totally fine.

Anyone know how long it takes for a new fan to ship in?

Alternatively I might do >>59942663, and grab an X230 and throw the old keyboard on. Just seems a shame to waste a 9 cell X220 battery.

Stopping a fan from spinning while it is turned on isn't a big deal. Letting it spin while it is turned off isn't a big deal. Your issue is elsewhere. Does it spin at all when you turn on the computer now?

If not, double check the connector for it.

Looking at W520s on ebay. How come some 15.6" screens, all with nVidia Quadro 1000M, say 1600X900 while others say 1920x1080. I know they both scale into each other. Are some dummies just unaware they can scale up to 1920x1080? Or are those machines locked at 1600x900 for some reason?
>>
>>59943543
There were three panels offered for the W520, 1366x768, 1600x900, and 1920x1080. Not everyone picked 1920x1080 when they ordered theirs, so there's some with the lesser panels on the used market. You can upgrade them yourself, but generally it's just easier and cheaper to just find one that already has the best panel.

I've got a t430 and t420 and unless it's just sitting there doing nothing it's usually at 45-50c under very light load
20c is like room temp, and I highly doubt your cpu and gpu would be producing little to no heat at all.

I've been trying to decide between the x230 and the t430 for a while now. I want to get a decently small laptop to lug around for class and shit, but I also what to be able to use an eGPU to do some light gaymen now and then. What's the best model for this of the two? Does one have extra PCIe slots or different expresscard tech? For some reason people online love to blatantly lie about the specs, so I'm not sure; the wiki says the t430 has a full size mPCIe slot, is that better to use over the expresscard? Does the x230 have something similar?
>>
Just bought a t420 the other day, haven't got my battery or OS yet, already thinking I should have gotten a t430 or 440 instead, what do you think?

I'd like at least 10 hours of battery life on it, and it doesn't seem like my t420 can do that (with the 9 cell). It looks like I may be able to upgrade the t430 to a quadcore and still get that 10 hours

I'm not too fussed about the layout of the keyboard I just want the same feel as the t420 (travel time, tactility). I've heard bad things about the trackpad for the t440 being too clicky or something.
>>
>>59946430
are there any good tutorials or anything on how to go about doing this?

I've put together desktop PCs before but ive never taken apart laptops
>>
>>59946538
I have a t420. You're not going to get close to ten hours on a 9 cell. If you need ten hours you're gonna need a backup battery or a slice which makes the thing enormous.
>>
>>59946517
both have mPCIe, x230 is under the palmrest and T430 is next to ram stick on bottom.
If you want more portability (and possibility of IPS screen), go with the X230. If you want a comfier size and more resolution, go with the T430. You /can/ get a discrete GPU in a T430, but its not going to be good as something external.

>>59946538
>10 hours
I'd be really surprised if the T430 got anywhere near that, especially with a quad. You should get a solid 6-7 from the T420 with the 9 cell though. And if you're ballsy you can do the mods to use that 9 cell in a T430 if you pick one up.
Only bad thing I've heard about the T440 trackpad is the lack of TrackPoint buttons which (despite being fixable by swapping a T450 trackpad in) is unforgivable.

There's a few factors. Most important is that used older models are so cheap that buying the new stuff just because some neckbeard hasn't gotten his DNA all over it doesn't make economical sense. Secondly, Lenovo has been trying to make their new shit look less corporate dadrock and more hipster Applefied. Lenovo makes plenty of lines of notebooks, plenty of which are perfectly suited to be simple modern MacFag clones. Thinkpads shouldn't be included in there. Or at the very least not ALL Thinkpads should be included in there.

So, save some money, get a better product. It'll be used and have a scratch or two and some dust, but if you want anything else you're a faggot.

I have a question about swapping out the trackpad - do I need to swap the ribbon cable from the T440p with the one that comes from a T450 trackpad for it to work? I know there are issues with the ALPS hardware version as to the Synaptic's one so I can purchase a complete palm rest for the same price as just the trackpad.

There are no screws on the LCD bezel, so it comes off if you pull it and twist the inside to a 45 degree angle.

Afterwards you have (i think) 4 screws retaining the LCD on the corners.

Rotate the top of the lid towards you, remove the LCD ribbon cable (its taped a bit), put in a new FHD screen. No cable swap needed.

I wanna buy a laptop for my mom. It should be quiet and not too hot while skyping with relatives. Hi /tpg/! I've never posted on this gen before, but I've lurked it a little in the past. Now I'm looking for your thoughts! I just got into a coding bootcamp and I'm super psyched about it. I need a laptop to do work in the classroom and on the go, but just about every red cent I had was spent on the course. I've got about two hundred dollars in my budget for a laptop. It has to be sturdy, but it doesn't necessarily have to be powerful, as I can remotely access my beefy desktop for any sort of big code compiling. It just has to run things like Sublime and maybe compile some simple stuff on the fly.

I was thinking of buying a refurb Thinkpad t420 for about $150. It looks like a solid piece of equipment that would serve me well. Am I making the right choice? Do you know of a better alternative to consider? I can spend a little more, but it'd eat into my food budget!

If you want sound you may want to use dosbox, but there are also better engines today that run on top of Windows.

halp tpg,

>>59954373
I think he is memeing us. The joke is that Doom runs on everything. dosbox is alright, but the real action's at QZDoom these days. The dev has a really good software rendering system. I've never seen the game so smooth.

>boot and nuke
what do you mean by that?
factory reset?
>>
>>59954349
>>59954404
Google Darik's Boot and Nuke (aka DBAN) and download the software. Read about what it does before you use it.

However if you bought a SSD to swap out with your HDD, you won't need to scrub it before use. Just pop open your machine and replace the drive. However, I would recommend you check youtube for a video or two on exactly how to do it. I, personally, have zero experience opening up thinkpads and modifying their guts.

This also might be a silly question, but do you have a new Windows installation to install on the new SSD?
>>
>>59954472
I think he's talking about DBAN. I use it at work all the time when I'm about to toss a drive, or when I'm reconfiguring a computer for a new user. It might be overkill, but it keeps my headaches to a minimum in the future.

So, it depends. You can reinstall an OS if you have the physical OS CD and the product key associated with the computer that you're going to be putting it on. Typically Windows pairs a product serial to a specific machine, so you can't use the same installation of Windows with multiple boxes.

Is the ebay seller shipping the associated Windows installer CD and product key with the w520? If so, you should be able to swap the drives and move the installation over to your new drive. Though you'd probably have to verify over the phone.

If you don't have the CD and key, you're probably going to have to buy another copy of Windows, unfortunately.

Also, what you linked me to is definitely not a Solid State Drive. It's a High Definition Drive. SSDs don't spin, but HDD do.
>>
>>59954664
>Also, what you linked me to is definitely not a Solid State Drive. It's a High Definition Drive. SSDs don't spin, but HDD do.
is that a bad thing?
>>
>>59954664
Now how much am i going to have to pay for windows 7?
>>
>>59954712
No. But you said you bought a SSD and then linked me to the HDD. I just want you to know that you didn't buy a SSD if that's the item you purchased. You bought a HDD. They're slower and wear down. Some people would say that they have a higher failure rate than SSDs due to moving parts.

>>59954728
You can google around for prices, but you can pick up W7 Pro for like $20 pretty easily. Don't sweat that.
>>
>>59954728
There are also some methods for migrating your OS, but if you are confident in your ability to do it, you might want to give them a miss and just spend the little extra money.

I think I fucked changing the fan out, I couldn't get the power clip out of the old one and it got stuck, the cords came out but a remnant of the plastic is stuck. I tried a screwdriver, and nail clippers to get the piece out. Rip thinkpad x61 if I can't get that piece out
>>
>>59954866
If you're looking for a tb, that recommendation was pretty solid. See, a 1tb SSD of midgrade and up quality (you don't want to jew out on your data storage, you get what you pay for) is going to run you $200+ dollars easily. With a SSD, you're paying for speed, not space.

Most people use their SSDs for their OS (which makes the whole computer run much faster) and a game or two (which decreases load times significantly). They don't use them to store all of their files and whatever, it's a waste. SSDs are for high access files. HDDs are for media and other less demanding data. Many users get a small SSD for their OS and then use a HDD for everything else.

When you're trying to figure out what sort of drive you should be getting, you've got to take the overall value of the machine in which you intend to install it into consideration. An unrefurb w520 is goes for, what, $300 max? It doesn't make sense to put a $250 SSD into it, you know? That HDD, on the other hand, is cheap, will read/write acceptably well, and will last you as long as you're going to need it.

After all this, if you're still set on getting a SSD, I can link you a few SSDs.

>>59955182
Yeah, I'm not sure exactly about the w520, but in the t420, you can pop out the disk drive, get an adapter, and slip another hard drive into the bay. So to try and alleviate your confusion:

Laptops have a bay for a hard drive. It's somewhere integrated into the body of the machine. You can open that pay up and pull the drive out and put a new one in there. In many (most?) laptops, there is a CD disk drive. Many machines let you pop the whole CD disk drive out of the body and use an adapter to slide another hard drive in. So you could have two drives active at once.

So yes, you can use two at the same time. You'll have a primary drive which will have your OS (and maybe Doom II?) on it and a secondary drive with whatever else on it. It's good for keeping the price point down.

What's your budget for a SSD?

Looking at the ebay listing, you can do what I described above and have two drives operating at once. I would strongly recommend a fairly small SSD for your OS, you'll be able to stick the tb HDD you bought into the CD drive (assuming you're alright with that).

>>59955193
Fair enough, but even then, I wouldn't be able to justify buying a tb SSD to myself.

Some people like to use disks for backup or something. I'm not one of them, but there are some who just like having a disk drive on hand.

I think a Crucial BX200 would suit your needs pretty well. They're about $100 for 240gb. Your OS'll take about 16gb or so of it. What do you want to do with the computer? If you're looking to game on it, you'll be able to install Steam and some games, or the Blizz launcher and OW on it.

Crucial is a reliable brand. Google around for the best prices, if you don't like this one:

>>
>>59955651
If you want to spend that, go for it, my dude. That's why I wanted to know what your budget was. I'm a big fan of spending as little as possible for the best results. When it comes to computers, they can always, always be faster and more powerful. But you can be let yourself be constrained by a budget so you don't spend 14 grand on a triple SLI Titan build.

How much are you looking to spend?
>>
>>59955707

>>
>>59955872
Then look for an EVO 850 PRO SSD on Newegg. I can tell you that you'll be spending a lot of money on what will most likely not noticeably change your user experience. There's a diminishing return on using a SSD in your machine.

OS= Huge difference
Games= Pretty significant difference
Applications= Significant loading difference
Compiling code= Depends on your CPU, but faster
Media= Slightly faster
Pictures, word docs, internet browsing= About the same.

Follow your heart if you've got the money to spend.

850 EVO is the best SSD you can get when it comes to SATA SSDs.

Unlike other SSDs it doesn't have the SLC cache problem where performance drops when you use it.
Also the 3D TLC NAND will outlast your computer.

the reason thinkpads are so cheap have to do with office laptop cycles
office buys 20 laptops, replaces them 4 years later, they get sold en-masse to re-sellers who have to sell them at low prices
hence good specs for low price
so things that were not in that cycle, consumer laptops, get more expensive

a good cheap upgrade would be more luck than anything, a max specced t420 can be within that price range, but then its still just a t420 over a t410, why bother ya know?
maybe t430 but same issue, not that big of a performance increase

look into things like elitebooks or dell latitiudes, they can sometimes go for cheaper than a comparable thinkpad due to people preferring thinkpads for used business laptops

its not really named, its just generally considered "compact keys", where theyre all close together
spaced out keys are refered to as chiclet keys since they look like chiclets and have lots of space between them
the reason they have lots of space is because theyre so flat, without angles or sloped edges they would make just one big flat surface that offers absolutely no touch feedback when typing

This isn't going to be some collector notebook to me, it's actually going to be my main platform for some time, so i really want to know if droping that money on the t430 would be really worth it, or it's just a marginal increase.
