Not a problem with note 2's, the battery is replaceable anyway.
>>59906557
>samshits
Old samsung phones (such as the Note 2 pictured) are not shit, here's why:
-Easily replaceable SIM, SD card, and battery, just pop off the back cover and remove.
-Easily repairable. You can replace the screen with just a philips screw driver and a guitar pick.
-Easily rootable and flashable
-Support for replicant, a fully free software android-based rom.
-Integrated stylus
-Super durable
-Used models are very cheap and easy to find.
-Still has specs on par with mid-tier phones today.

poorfag here wanting to upgrade my t410
currently have a i5, 6gb of ram, the 256gb disk that came with it and a caddy with the 500gb disk from my old laptop.
what should I get first?:
- more RAM
- an SSD (can only afford a small one, but it's not a problem as long as I have the caddy)
- new battery
- ???

I use this laptop mainly for music production, mainly Ableton Live, some video editing, PS and shitposting
thanks

Actually no.
The phone is more akin to a Unibody Macbook rather than a ThinkPad.

There is no ThinkPad of phones, if it did, it would go to a Nokia.

so thats the ssd?
I recommend going for more RAM first, for multiple photoshop layers & ableton live tracks it'll help
The SSD will just help loading the track samples.

What the hell?
$20 is fine for shipping.
A USPS large flat rate gameboard box costs $18 for a buyer. That will fit 14" to 17" (not thick) laptops with power cords. A $14 USPS medium flat rate box may not even fit for that laptop

When I come across 'expensive' shipping, I ask if they can ship USPS Gameboard box or FedEx ground.

>>
>>59910084
They added the price of shipping to the final cost.

You're not going to get away from $20 shipping, that's what it costs to ship a laptop in a timely manner.
Just consider it part of the price of the laptop.
>>
>>59909241
To elaborate on the whole GPU thing this is the pic they have up
I'm kinda stuck between this and T430, but the cheapest T430 on ebay right now (without waiting on auctions) is a 200 bucks with shipping and it's in pretty shit condition.

This one is in good condition and honestly after 4 thinkpads I'm ready for a change. Kinda excited about the metal palmrest too.
Just need to make sure it doesn't have discreet graphics for the obvious reasons, but I don't think it does.

Also speaking of my X201
>Had it for 3 years, daily use outside, constantly left on all night
>Would rarely shut it down, always kept it in sleep mode
>Always just tossed it in my bag

A month ago it starting developing really loud CPU noise, somehow becoming worse than my old ass T61.

Then it started heating up so bad it would automatically shut off, so I stopped compiling software and most demanding things etc.

Then the backlight on the screen started to randomly not come on when waking up from sleep mode

The worst problem by far though is that pressure on the bottom right side of the screen bezel would toggle sleep mode, so it would turn on in my bag and naturally it would rapidly heat up.

I opened it up to see what was going on and low and behold, like 60% of the screws are completely stripped to shit.

So my question: is it worth fixing?
I would probably need a new screen cable (assuming it's not the screen dying) , new set of screws, and the heatsink is now basically stuck on the mobo due to the screw on the the very edge of the copper being to stripped to remove and too short to torque out with pliers like I did with the other screws.

Or I can just buy an X220 when they get cheap enough (I won't need one for a while). I kinda hate the *20 models because they're a total pain in the ass to take apart, and whenever I buy a thinkpad I HAVE to give it a total clean plus repaste, so yeah.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

So a while ago I found a broken Thinkpad T530 at my work's electronic waste.
It turned out to be a pretty powerful machine with i7 Quad core, graphics card and the best screen you could possibly get in that model. However it never turned on. Tried all my different AC adapters (including a 90W one), and of course all the "press power button for 11 times XD" memes.

The correct motherboard model would have costed me a fortune. So I decided buy just a different one without a graphics chip.

Fortunately, the pack also includes the proper cooler that doesn't have a heatpipe to the now non-existent graphics chip.

Is there anything else I should expect from changing the motherboard model?

Check the ultrabay for a battery, if so, remove it.
Also broken USB ports will stop powering up your system
>>
>>59916355
If that is a larger 15" model it may require a 135W charger in order to even turn on.

If you plan on replacing the Motherboard then you should make sure that it works with the screen that this thinkpad has. Also make sure that it has the same ports and supports the same devices.

What makes your Thinkpad comfy to you? For me it's the rubberized coating on the cover, the physical keys for the touchpad including the very useful middle key, the finger print reader, the green LED's, and the metal hinges.

Ok, my budget is limited so im torn between two options here.

This is going to be my main notebook for a while, so it has to be reliable.

>But a smaller AC adapter would at least charge the battery, right?

Yes.

More powerful AC adapters are only necessary for continuous high load use.
If you're just browsing or only use your Thinkpad for short periods of time the smallest AC adapter will do just fine.
But if you're gaming hours on end you might want a heavy adapter to both power you CPU/GPU at full load and charge the battery at the same time.
>>
>>59918756
To clarify: the one that comes as standard with your Thinkpad assumes worst case scenario (extremely heavy load + empty battery that needs charging).
But any compatible AC adapter will work.

He's talking bullshit.

I have directly compared an L460 to my T460p.
There is very little between them, build quality wise.
And the L460 certainly feels a lot stronger than average laptops including Macbooks.

I think it's actually the same build specs as the X260, which nobody complains about.
But I could be mistaken.

Isn't that exactly how the mouse buttons on many thinkpads are? It never was a bit deal I think. Always used my thumb for clicking, and it would always gravitate towards the bottom where clicking is easier.

>using the mousepad

>>

No I use the tools that works. On macs they work great. Except for the current one where they're annoying pieces of shit without buttons or a proper tactile click.

If you thought I was talking about the thinkpad trackpad, I wasn't. I was talking about the _buttons_ that are hinged at the top, so you have to click them near the bottom. Which is a non-issue when you consider how it is natural to press those buttons.
>>
>>59919134

I think that varies depending on the model. On my L460 it doesnt matter where you click them.

Also, I'm using my X230 right now, why is it that the trackpad is buggier and more jittery than the mousepad on my fucking E130. It seems to be extremely sensitive, when taking my finger off the cursor will jump around for half a second after because its still measuring the input from my barely touching finger as it comes up. I have a W520 model with the lower end graphics card (Quatro 1000M) and the i7 2620M Dual-core. Got it for only 250-300€ (I forgot, but it was in that range) barely used. Installed a 250GB SSD and 16GB RAM and it's a tank. I mean, literally, it weighs almost 3kg and the adapter is nearly 0.5kg. It's a beast for what it is designed for though, I do a lot of numerical computing and simulating, CAD, CAE, Matlab related stuff and it's perfect for it. I cannot imagine how good the new models are. The only downside is that it is missing an HDMI port, but it doesn't bother me to much since I have other laptops for that.

No point in this post, just wanted to describe my fascination for this great machine. <3

Well that depends on what era of hardware, what specific model and what price you can get them at.
All are generally on the same tier quality and situation wise, all old office laptops that get sold en-masse for cheap.

I personally prefer thinkpads because i love the black brick design, but latitudes are also really nice hardy machines.
From what ive seen of elitebooks, you get better performance for the price but theyre not built as solidly

Trackpads on expensive laptops these days are good enough. If people want more they use an external mouse. The whole not needing to take your hands away from the home row thing is pretty autistic, the trackpad is like 6cm down from the keyboard, you have to make more of a move to hit delete than touch the trackpad. Making precise adjustments with the trackpad is much faster too. That being said, I still think the trackpoint is a nice addition.
>>
>>59923981
Gotta pay for those premium features, anon.

That being said you can find Thinkpad P50s for around $1k on Ebay with an i7-6700HQ. Maybe give it a few months and the price will drop down to ~$800 or less.

I need some help, i have a problem

I have a T420 with a 300gb SSD
and a W530 with a 500gb HDD

How can i go about swapping the SSD into the W530 without doing reinstalls of win10?

I have a couple of external drives i can use for a "buffer"

I've already backed up what i needed to, but i know windows is going to bitch about keys.

Should i just bite the bullet and reinstall windows on both systems?

are keys saved to my bios or linked with my microsoft account? key storage is confusing again. (both are OEM-Upgrade keys not retail keys)

The plan is to sell the t420 (id rather not, but i'm tight on money thanks to getting laid off out of the clear blue)

>>
>>59927467
You can't just move a windows installation from one computer to a computer with vastly different hardware.
If it was a transfer from models in the same generation like T420 > X220 then is would most likely work but, in your case it would not work and windows might simply refuse to boot up, it's worth a try though.
If you had GNU/Linux installed instead of NSA/Windows 10, than this transfer would work since the Linux kernel doesn't need platform specific modules, and modules are easily replaceable in the system.
About the keys for windows, on the T420 the key is not saved on the machine's firmware because the T420 is bios only, and bios doesn't support saving windows keys.
However, the W530 has a UEFI, which does support saving windows keys, so it may have your windows key saved in the UEFI.

I highly suggest you switch to Linux, its a great operating system if you don't plan to do gayming.
Ubuntu is a great place to start.

My t500 beeps once when it turns on. I've disabled all beeps in the BIOS and it's not listed in the beep codes in the technician's manual. I read somewhere it's indicative of a hardware error. Is this something I'm going to have to send in to diagnose.

ehh idk It's not bad per se, but it may not be cost-effective if you have a lot of data, and most of that data doesn't need the improved performance of an SSD. So it depends on your specific use case.

Hi! I want to buy a modern thinkpad that still retains the old design language and so far have come with the P50 and the T430, problem is that I don't care too much for the GPU, just the Q versions of the CPUs. Is there any smaller computer that has recent Q CPUs? I'm thinking 14 inches tops.

whats that thinkpad on the front? T430?

For a thinkpad under 14" with a quad-core processor your options are pretty much the T420, T430, T440p and T460p.

Good to know that there's barely any difference for normal use between SATA 2 and 3. I heard something about problems if you for example have a mSATA SSD in the mSATA slot and another drive in the normal HDD bay. Is that true?
>>
>>59932492
>mSATA SSD in the mSATA slot and another drive in the normal HDD bay
yes
>>
>>59932492
>Is that true?
not really, unless you dual boot and have different operating systems on each one. in my case in order to install linux on the msata ssd and successfully boot off of it I had to boot up windows on the main drive then go into diskpart and mark the msata partition as 'active' or something like that otherwise when I hit enter in the bios boot menu it had no effect.
but as long as you only use one operating system there are no issues.
>>
I believe my thinkpad's charger just died. I've been using it as a desktop- no battery- and the power was someho cut. I was able to boot it three more times in the following few minutes before the forth crash, after which I got no more power.

Are both parts of the charger bad? The part that plugs into the thinkpad has a power brick, and the other, uh, connects that to a wall power outlet...

>>59933257
>I've heard horror stories of keeping a laptop perpetually plugged in with a battery, and the battery being wholly fucked a few months down the road, so...

those ancient horror stories were probably from 10 years ago because on a 2010+ laptop you can set battery thresholds and not worry about the battery getting fucked after a couple of months. mine has like 12% wear after three and a half years because I'm not a retard, also using your laptop without a battery or some sort of ups/socket protection is definitely fucking stupid, it was a matter of time before your shit got fried.

Discrete GPUs in laptops tend to fail regardless of the brand and OEM

The best setup for a discrete GPU is when it has its own heatsink and fan instead of sharing the CPU's. You'll find that in Alienwares and older Dells but not much else.
>>
>>59933257
The "keeping your laptop plugged in is bad for the battery" thing is a meme. The degradation they're referring to applies laptops from the '90s that used different battery technology.

I use my laptops as desktops with the batteries in. They run 24/7 and the batteries still hold a good charge like before.

You only need a UPS if your power is unstable.

Nope, I haven't been watching prices lately but not too long ago there was someone regularly selling X230's for prices starting at $200 for one in shit condition (along the lines of needing a new screen bezel or palm rest) and not too much more for one in functional enough condition like the ones you linked.

There's nothing that cheap right now, but you could always look at dropping a 128GB mSATA SSD into one with an HDD or something like that.

Also, if you're not aware there's some 15/10% off offer for certain people on eBay right now. If you didn't get it I think there might also be a 5% coupon you could use.

Hey, thanks for the reply, The other guy mentioned options for post-2010 laptops but my Thinkpad is a 2009 model (W500), so I wondered if I had that functionality.

Also, sorry for the late reply. My W500 is dead. I plugged in the (50% charge) battery again, and it can't even boot- the power flickers. So it's fried. I only had it for two years, but at least now I know the dangers of using a laptop plugged into the wall without a battery plugged in...

The shitty thing is I researched the effects of keepig a laptop's battery plugged out indefinitely, too, but none of the several articles I read mentioned the safety benefits of using a laptop with a batery plugged in, and the risk of using it without one... at least now I know, and can tell others...
>>
>>59936577
I've seen this happen many times, people yanked the power cord once or twice by accident and the charging circuit got fucked. it's simply not designed and tested to be used without a battery which acts like a backup.

even companies who keep 200 of them in docks without batteries 24/7 have backup generators in the building and UPS's so you can safely shut down your laptop.
>>
>>59936702
:'(

It sucks so hard that I thought I did my research, yet I still got fucked. I'd actually lost the stock HDD with this thing due to its enduring dozens of crashes in a house with unstable electricity. But somehow I figured it was only either the battery, or the HDD, and I thought Thinkpad batteries were sketchy.

I need to match 1080 res to avoid cockblocking myself with my own torrents. Hopefully T500s/ W500s, or the 16:9 1080p thinkpads have lowered in price since I got this two years ago. Want the 16:10, still, ideally though.
