I recently picked up a used T420 and have been really enjoying it. Of course, it doesn't come with USB 3 so I also picked up an expresscard USB 3 from Startech: https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/USB-3.0/Cards/1-Port-Flush-Mount-ExpressCard-SuperSpeed-USB-3-Card-Adapter~ECUSB3S11

The adapter works great in Win7 but seems to be inconsistent with my various USB 3 drives on Linux, despite the website claiming it is compatible. I've had some difficulty tracking down much information for drivers for this device or anyone talking about configuring it for Linux.

Any ideas or resources?

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally I find that a lot of the older style keyboards suffer from mushy key actuation. It isn't even model specific, just depends on the supplier for that particular batch. The keyboard on my W520 is amazing but the one on my brother's T420 is sort of underwhelming and imprecise in comparison. And they are supposed to be the same fucking part. The new chiclets are more uniform it seems. Personally, I like both the T560 I have at work and the W520 I've got at home. The T560 is a little annoying because Lenovo simplified the keyboard a little too much (the whole function row is messed), but for 97% of the time it is just as good. And this is coming from someone who turned his nose up at the T430 when it came out.

>>59969699
I used to have one in my T61. I was pretty disappointed with it, the card would get stupid hot and then sometimes stop working, which caused problems when I was trying to copy shit to a USB 3.0 drive.

LP140WD2(TL)(G1) replacement panel for my t420 review:

got a used "grade b" panel off ebay for $35, which seems like the only way to get a legit-by-model-# panel, instead of a """compatible""" who-knows-what from china. one tiny scratch that i can't see when the panel is on unless theres a solid color underneath and i try really hard to find it. probably going to put worse scratches on myself in my day to day

-hell of a lot brighter and better color. at least as good as my cheap lg ips monitor
-viewing angles are *acceptable* vs stock (piss awful). pretty good horizontal, pretty good tilted back until about 120° then starts getting wonky, not great tilted forward
-glossy coating isn't too reflective. bright lights will show up, but its not a fucking mirror like some ive seen

i'd say worth $35. don't pay much more than that to improve your t420 display unless it's straight up going full retard soldering in a board for a 1080p ips. even then, please reflect a little on how much time/$$$ is being put into a $150ish 5 y/o laptop

Is it worth asking a seller if the charger in the photos is part of the listing if it's a good deal either way?

It doesn't mention the charger, but if I ask and they confirm, I'd be out of a good deal if someone buys it before I do.

More than it's worth to be honest. It's subjective, but the T430 keyboards are still one of the best you can find on a laptop to date. The dedicated media keys are a plus too. I dont think a BIOS flash and the minor I/O handicaps are worth the switch when the T430 keyboard is good enough. But if you really need the T420 keyboard, I'd advise you to do a bit of research before the BIOS flash.
>>
>>59972871
I don't. I was just curious.
Thanks.
>>
>>59971641
I just got the same display off Amazon for about $50 for my T430. The glossy display looks much better than the matte cheap-shit panel that Lenovo provided. Honestly, I advise anyone who has a T420-T430 to make the upgrade if they cant handle the piss-poor viewing angles and shit color contrast from the default panels. Just dont expect IPS level colors, viewing angles and brightness, it's still a TN panel.
>>
>>59972534
This really depends on the specific cooler models and how much you're willing to mod it
I was able to add the R52 cooler with the bigger fan and gpu heat pipes on my T42 after a few hours with a dremel tool, files and a drill.
I've also done a similar thing involving some alienware heatsink I found on eBay for 5$ and modified that to fit on a T410
>>
>>59971742
A brand new original charger is 20-30 dollars. Usually what you see is what you get, unless the seller is just using the same photos for every listing, or something he lifted from elsewhere.

Got a second T430 and I think this is the greatest fucking deal I've found so far.

$100 shipped with power adapter and dead battery. No HDD or caddy. 8GB RAM, i5.

Spent $55 on a new OEM battery, $45 on a 120GB SSD and caddy.

Total $200 for a fucking sparkling refurbed T430 with 8GB RAM and new battery/SSD. Does a better deal exist?
>>

Sounds like an awesome deal. Mine is at around 300$ with 8gb ram and the 300hdd switched with a 128ssd.
I don't really know the state of it yet but I am assuming it will be factory quality.
Might get a caddy and an additional ssd down the line.

It went from like ~50Wh to 35Wh.

Which processors do these HPs have that are quad-core? I'm pretty much seeing the same i5 and i7 processors that the x220s come with.

Also I don't see two Sata Hard Drive slots in here unless you replace the DVD drive. And it does not have an mSata slot, which the x220 does have. The only other tradeoff would be having the chiclet keyboard and a arguably worse trackpoint than the x220 has.

Those elitebooks have socketted CPUs hence the possiblity of quad core options. I doubt you could find examples of that for purchase, given that the seller would be liable for losing their money if/when the motherboard gave out.

The X220/X230 also have the IPS screen going for them, which seems to put a fair few people off the smaller elitebooks. Though really all the differences are pretty small and your average person would probably be best off just getting with whichever's cheaper.
>>
>>59983776
I guess its nice that you can add a quad-core cpu to it. Don't know if I would be willing to spend the money to upgrade a small laptop to its absolute max specs.

>after a while elitebooks do not look good and clean
It's MUCH easier to wipe down the metal surface and get them looking good again.
If the keyboard is worn you can just pop a new one on.
Meanwhile all the contact surfaces on a thinkpad are plastic and they get shiny VERY quickly, which just looks like your keyboard is a greasy mess, even if it's clean.
The rubber is pretty easy to scratch as well, and you'd be hard pressed to find a thinkpad on ebay without worn corners on the lid.

This is without mentioning some inherent problems on the X series past the x201, the outer lip will eventually break off because of how poorly designed it is.

Look, I love my thinkpads, but stop putting them on a fucking pedestal. They excel in some areas but are bad in others, like anything else in life.
>>
>>59988295
I wonder If you should look for a desktop instead, but then again, how I'm supposed to find space for that versus a laptop. Now the next problem would be a monitor, possibly external keyboard and mouse.
Monitor would cost about 120€ or so and I already have a few keyboard to spare and a mouse (needs proper cleaning).

I'm using one. x230t has guaranteed IPS screen. Pen and touch input is nice to have. Tablet mode is bulky but you can still make it comfy in certain situations (like laying it against your legs on the sofa). Besides the tablet features it's pretty much identical to the regular x230; nearly the same body. The two hinges of the x230 probably make it sturdier.

Main things T430 has over the x230 is socketted CPU, secondary drive bay, and 900p option (factory).

I have the majority of the performance I got out of my i7-6700 desktop, but I just have to unplug an expresscard cable, press a button and pick up the laptop to take it to lectures.

Why wouldn't I game on a such a laptop? It does everything except house more than 8gb ram and an eGPU at the same time. Only thing I'm unsatisfied with is a little bit of CPU bottlenecking of photogrammetric processing, but as far as I can see getting a T430 and moving up to a QM wouldn't change that to any extent that makes it worth it.

I've got a 2560p.
120gb SSD + 320GB SSD in this badboi. It's my first laptop and I've had a pleasant experience with it considering I paid £130. The screen is certified dogshit though.

Mine doesn't look like that, though there is a few scratches near the hinge.

my w520 throttles badly on the gpu, and the cpu runs at like 95+c under cpu and gpu load (not even full load, just any load)

Pretty much all laptops have terrible cooling.
Only the gaming laptops that are fuck hueg with dual fans run nice and cool under load.
Plus it's pretty sad that my 2012 15" macbook pro runs cooler and doesn't throttle like my t430 does (and my t430 throttles badly)

I've got a Thinkpad T530 with no screen, no OS.
I've got a Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D cable, a VGA cable, an RJ45 cable, power adapter for the T530, and a non-EFI PXE server setup.
There is a password set for the BIOS, and I know the password.

I can't traverse bootup blind to get it to network boot. pls, anyone w/ a Thinkpad T530 willing to guide this blind anon?

>>
>>59975363
I'd say so

In my personal experience (I had a x220 before)

Same stuff
>Ruggedness
>Size
>Screen
>Touchpad and trackpoint (slightly different design on the touchpad, but essentially the same)
>Hinges - again, different design but essentially the same
>ports (minus the CD - Rom plus the miniDisplay)
>still waterproof
>fingerprint reader

Better stuff
>Battery life - the regular model goes >10h and the 6cell goes >17hours
> reserve integrated 3cell battery
> keyboard more tactile and feels stronger
>backlit keyboard

Worse stuff
>keyboard button arrangement - they removed a lot of important buttons
> no dedicated GPU
>no CD rom thus no space for more SSD

Debatable stuff
>keyboard design - the new is island design the old was classical, but essentially it comes to the user, I prefer the island type
>NOTE: The keystrokes have the same depth and the island type isn't your average keyboard shit it feels more tactile than the classical one
>Overall design - some folks like the "late 90s look" some like the "modern but tryin to look old look"

That was my experience with the new T450s, honestly it feels just the same as the rest of thinkpads but they tried to make it "cooler" with the design. Don't fall for the "not a thinkpad" meme, it's missing some features but overall it's the same shit they come up with every year
