I was swap thrashing my SSD a lot, so I found some spare ram and upgraded my x200 to 4GB.
Should I max out to 8GB while I'm at it?

X220 and T520, both with 9 cell batteries, new keyboards, and the best screens available for those models.
>>

I know this is a retarded question but I'll ask anyway
Is it possible to retrofit the x200 or x420 motherboards into a x60 case and use the x60s LCD?

Is a Y510P a bad idea? (Known defects, etc.)

I know it's not a true thinkpad, but I'm mulling one over.
(I want to replace an i3-2310M/GT540M Acer with something better performing for vidya, but still a laptop out of necessity. They seem to hover around the £500 mark used, which is around my budget.)
>>
>>59881410
No because the T420 motherboard is too wide because the T420 is a wide screen, and the screw holes of a x220 wont match the x60 screw holes. I'm also sure they have a bunch of differences in battery, display, and keyboard connectors so not it is not possible.

Very bad, that shit will break down faster than you can yell SHIT! If you want a thinkpad for gaymen, then look up setting up a eGPU setup with a T420 or W520 (if you want a quad core). Or maybe you should think about stopping gayming and doing something productive, like programming. They call them think-pads for a reason, you've got to THINK YOU VIDEO NIGGER.

they just work, older models are still relevant because there's not been a significant increase in performance during the past years, can be fixed and upgraded, tons of parts, trackpoint is GOAT, it's not gonna get nigged.

why is OP always a cum slurping retard who doesnt bother to include this pasta?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
>>
>>59881621
There HAS been a significant increase, just not in performance.
While it took intel 10 years to effectively double the performance throughput of a core2duo, CPUs use so little power now that 8+ hour laptop battery life is now possible, even on gaming laptops.

Meanwhile, you're lucky to get 4 hours from a core2duo thinkpad.

Just installed *dibs bedora*:DDD 25 on my x230, two questions:

Any general advice?

Is there a way to have GNOME report the actual battery capacity instead of going to 100%? I've used i3 a lot and once of the nice things its status bar thing can do is check the actual battery capacity versus its designed max. In other words, my battery has lost about 25% capacity over the years and therefore it would stop at about 75%. Look at /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/energy_full[_design] to see what I mean.
>>
>>59885936
Unless it's a particularly bad chink battery, it's not going to decide to keep charging until it explodes
Just use tp_smapi or the like if you feel inclined to stop it charging before 100%
The settings are probably stored on a chip somewhere since they're usually preserved between boots to different operating systems unless overwritten again (e.g. into windows with Power Manager) but reset if you remove the battery until booting into an environment that applies battery settings

16:9 is not that bad because if you think about it, its the natural shape of your vision. A persons vision is much more horizontal than vertical, so with a 4:3 screen you have a lot of your horizontal vision unused.
>lower build quality compared to IBM ThinkPads
The plastic body panels are a bit lower in quality, but because the T420 retains the original IBM design with a real rollcage, it keeps it structural integrity on par with older thinkpads.

Hello /tpg/, i'm planning on replacing my lenovo G580 with a ThinkPad since reapairing/upgrading it might not be worth it. I run linux and most of the time i browse the internet, listen to some music and watch chinese cartoons. I'm looking for a ThinkPad that has a better hardware than my G580 (this include toughness) as well as the ability to upgrade to a nice 1080p IPS display and run a SSD for the OS along with an HDD for mass storage. The best candidates i found would be the T440 or the T450, their hardware is better than my G580 and both are able to upgrade to a 1080p IPS display, but apparently they aren't that tough and you can't use it's m.2 slot for a bootable SSD. With my preferences in mind, what model would /tpg/ choose?
Pic unrelated.

>>59896213
Don't get lenovo's new redesigned thinkpads, they aren't very durable or high quality. If you want 1080p and are not very concerned about portability, get a W520/T520. Although the 1080p T520 screen is TN, it has the same color accuracy as lenovo's new cheap IPS panels, and has quite good viewing angles for a TN. Also by buying a new lenovo you are supporting a Chinese business that does not have your interests in mind.

Depends on what you want to to
a 15" 4:3 R60 frame and motherboard are physically different from a 4:3 T60 & T61 mobo.
R60's dont come with an IPS display, but 15" 4:3 T60p's mostly do.

I was gonna frankenpad a R60 with a bad mobo but after finding out it wasn't an IPS panel and I needed another R60 mobo, I bitched out because I didn't want to modify the frame (didn't have a dremel at the time

>>59896349
Fuck off please

>>59896213
A base T440 does not support IPS 1080p, its LCD ribbon cable doesn't support it and anything past 720p bricks the motherboard.
T440s and T440p can be upgraded to 1080p IPS, the easiest is with non-touch models.
I used a ChiMei panel on a T440p, cheap swap and easy (did a video tutorial)

This changed on the base T450 and supports 1080p IPS. The 'p' models just have a socketed processor if you think about upgrading the CPU.

>pic related
Left is the cheap (but good) chimei panel next to an AUO B140HAN01.1 on my T430s, which is arguably the best 14" panel available in 2014.

You can use the m.2 slot on T440/50 models, but you need the correct length, a 52mm one. Could always get an extender.

Me personally, I don't care unless I am told that I should not update. Reasons are because of bios whitelists on wifi/hdds, but sometimes these whitelists are removed on updates...

Some modified bios are great, especially the middleton bios.

>>59894881
IMO develop software first with a linux system and then decide for yourself. Have you tried Trisquel, because you may hate the OS. With that said, you could always use another distro that can respect your freedom.

You are limited to hardware if you do the LibreBoot path.

>>59893571
Not sure why, but /g/ made me discover ThinkPads in 2010 and I've had about 50 ever since them.
Its just fun buying and trying them.
I just got the 'first' ThinkPad, an IBM 2521. Gotta fix them but I've became obsessed.

The 16:10 display is hard for someone who likes 4:3.

But fuck them. I'll take the bait and tell em to eff off (:

IMO the 'god tier' ThinkPads should be recommended to enthusiasts or for people who don't want a primary mobile machine.
Like I recommend an IBM machine for anyone who wants a unit for fun. Then again, i will recommend Sony Vaios, ToughBooks, Elitebook 8760w, 2760p, and late 09 or mid 2010 Unibody macbooks for funs.

It just depends what they need, want and budget for. <3

>>59888728
IMO it should be updated, but its all copy paste
T450s is really a damn good deal
T430 is a superior machine than the T420, and if people bitch about the keyboard, it can be modded to accept it.
IF even then it is bitched at, a T601p is a better laptop than the Dankpad.
With all that said, a T420 is still a damn good place to start, though I recommend a T430 if you want to spend a little more and dGAF about the OEM battery lockout

Hey /tpg/ I'm looking for an anime/porn game machine with a focus on battery life. Was looking at chromebooks but I found out they don't play .mkv or use java. Was looking on amazon everything looks like garbage according to reviews. send help.

Hi, first time poster on TPG.

I have had an 8 year old laptop and I'd like to bite the bullet and after I get paid for the book I'm translating, I feel that a thinkpad is a good way forward.

My use case:
>Games: Not gaming on laptop
>Office: Loads on battery, I work while commuting, using WPS and PDF reader
>Battery: High priority, needs to hold out as long as possible (now my laptop charges for 2 hours and can go for about 7 working actively)
>Budget: Will state options below
>Size: anything under 15" is okay

I would just like a pointer on how to orient myself in the Thinkpad world. Looking at this:

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s – i7 2,8 GHz, 6 GB, 320 GB, 14,1" HD+ LCD, nVidia NVS 4200M, WiFi, webcam, 2x battery, W7

Is this a good choice? I know that S means Shit battery. This laptop is about 180$ (shit Czech prices).

I would like a 16:9 frame ratio.

OK, got some with 8GB RAM or 4GB RAM, but that doesn't matter so much. Comes with stock battery, though.

What about the god T420? How does it compare to the X220? Any laptops with a greater stock battery life?

The power cable keeps coming loose from the back, and it's difficult to even wedge it in there to make it start charging.

Does this call for a new cable or what?

Is the 30 series that much worse than the 20s?

Upgraded from a loaded t420 to a loaded t530with the quad i7 + 2gb nvidia card

I feel dirty using this keyboard but holy shit does this have a lot more power

I think the 30 is as new as I can get while having a traditional dock right?

Am I correct in thinking they now only have the usb dock?

This dock is my life
>>
>>59903895
I could have sworn the t420s is simply the fully loaded one, does the badge actually have the s?

Just make sure it has the quadro 4200m and the better i5 (one has 1mb cache and the other has 2mb or some shit, but the better i5 is more inline with the rare to find i7)
>>
>>59905485
I just got a t440s and it has a docking port. I don't see the complaint about it, the build quality is similar to my x301. Just need to replace this dog shit touchpad.
>>
>>59898912
actually on my T420 I disabled both turbo boost and hypermemethreading.
I know right now this is a really good dualcore instead of a proper i5 but it feels great doing literally whatever I want without being worried about high temps and throttling and shit (I get 40cmin 70cmax), and honestly desu I can't feel the difference during daily usage.

blaze it.

New soldiering process by nVidia.
It botched a lot of laptop manufacturers, the MacBook Pros are notorious for them lol

This is why Lenovo went back to ATI after the nVidia scuffle
Its strange though, because they were preferably ATI in the A3x & T4x era, the T60p had an ATI GPU as well lol

Anywho, a remedy is removing the motherboard, baking it or applying a blow dryer/heat gun to the nVidia chip.

>>59901061

A new cable is only about 10 dollars, but before ordering one i would check one out at a store in order to make sure it isn't the port that's broken. If it is the port it's an easy fix. A new charging port is only about 5 dollars and you just have to plug it in.

alternative is to buy a used T520 on ebay, and sell the T61 on ebay, since the T520 is the newest with the classic keyboard..

but idk if its enough of an upgrade to bother leaving my T61..

So what do?

Upgrade the T61?

or don't and sell it, buy a T520? The fact that T61 uses ddr2 and 4GB sticks are overpriced sucks

Guys,

HP Elitebook 8470p with 2.7Ghz Core i5-3340M, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, and most importantly 1600x900. The OEM power brick is included too.

It's in pretty good condition. $168 with shipping

My only worry is that I don't know if these all have the discreet graphics option (AMD 7570) which would make installing linux a pain, not to mention the heat issues and decreased battery life.
Anyone have any experience with the elitebooks?

hmm interesting, they aren't too expensive and 1080p seems more common than in other models. its fatty but whatev.

If you don't disable the trackpad in BIOS and use the clitmouse exclusively then you miss the point of using this device
>>
>>59906256
There is no "Thinkpad of phones". The new Nokias might come close, but they aren't modular and upgrading internals is out of the question (then again, upgrading is often out of the question for a lot of modern Thinkpads as well)
>>
>>59908125
it's an alternative to the trackpad from the early days of notebook design that's wonky as fuck and will give you wrist aids

it survived on thinkpads and thinkpads only because the userbase of thinkpads is 78% people with intense autism who have arbitrarily decided it's a superior choice and will defend this, without basis, to their death

Currently using a Galaxy S6, someone broke the charging port but I was able to use a wireless charging device to make it work.

I am a fan of the 8740w & 8760w.
the 8470p looks decent, haven't had one yet, my coworker likes the 2570p and we haven't had problems so far.
Best thing about the 84xx series is that most of them come with 900p displays.

>>59907558
Try to get a 1080p quad i7 for $250, 500GB HDD or 128GB SSD with 8GB RAM would be considered a 'nice deal' at that price.
i've gambled on a few with that price and sold them for $400 - $500 range a year back.

There are two different quadro GPUs though, and you can't upgrade them, this is the flaw of W series against Precisions and (W Series) Elitebooks.

it's nice to keep my hands in one place. with a track pad, I have to lift my hands to the trackpad to use it. with the track stick, I only have to move a finger.
when moving the cursor, pushing gives a constant movement. trackpad requires lifting and dragging, lifting and dragging, etc.
stick doesn't feel like it has the accuracy of a trackpad, but I don't need that level of precision to begin with.
>>
>>59908125
Yes, I actually prefer it to every pointing device I've ever used with the exception of the Kensington ADB trackball I had plugged in to my Power Mac as a kid. Being able to move the most around without taking your fingers off the home row is fucking godly, I suggest you try it sometime.

>>59907558
There's no real "ideal specs", just buy whatever suits your needs. Ideally you will want a 2760QM (the 2720QM is a little bit slow IMO), but the 2620M has better single-thread performance than either one of them, so if you don't do a lot of multitasking or multithreaded shit, you could probably get away with it.

Just make sure whatever you buy has the 1080p screen. There is absolutely no point to getting a W520 with the 1600x900 screen, there are tons of T520s available with that resolution for a lot less money. Personally I paid $290 for my 2720QM with 8 GB RAM, 1080p screen, 500 GB HDD and a colorimeter, but that was one year ago and an exceptionally good deal at the time. You can expect to pay about $300 for a similar configuration nowadays, bit less for dual-core models. I think ktgee's prices are a bit out of line on the W series, because a W520 should not be $450 unless it is in exceptional condition, has the Quadro K2000M graphics, or has a high-end processor like the 2820QM or 2920XM.

Old samsung phones (such as the Note 2 pictured) are not shit, here's why:
-Easily replaceable SIM, SD card, and battery, just pop off the back cover and remove.
-Easily repairable. You can replace the screen with just a philips screw driver and a guitar pick.
-Easily rootable and flashable
-Support for replicant, a fully free software android-based rom.
-Integrated stylus
-Super durable
-Used models are very cheap and easy to find.
-Still has specs on par with mid-tier phones today.
