There are plenty of good manufacturers, and there are more options than ever. It's just easier to purchase a shitty product nowadays. Look into some of the newer Dells and avoid the XPS lineup.

Beatbuy is having a sale on hp, lenovo ideapad, and dell. Under $300. Specs are the same. Which company would you go with. Hp's seem slow, dell has a lot of complaints, and I dont know anything about lenovos. I have a gateway desktop from 2010 that I drug back out thats doing well. I cant update windows on it so I was going to make that the fun computer and the laptop is the school(cosmetology) legal computer.

If you bothered to look up the XPS13's common issues you would have know about that atrocious coil whine defect

Also lenovo is garbage too, pic related is the broken hinge on my 3 year-old y410p literally falling apart from regular use (known issue)

current gen X1 screen is 300nits / 1300:1 contrast / 96.7 sRGB
which is mighty fine for majority of people

I have a 2013 14" HP Touch-Pavillion. I'd say it's okay. The plastic they used is kind of cheap and flimsy, especially around the keyboard. Key spacing took time to get used to, screen size is decent, webcam is decent (meme), it's quiet and comes with an i5, 8gb of ram. Touchscreen is fucking useless thoufg since the keyboard doesn't fold back so usually it's just awkward.

If you do get a MBP, don't get the 15". The touchbar is dogshit and not having a real Esc key affects me way more than I expected. Also, I've had more kernel panics in the past 2 months of having this Macbook than in 3 years of having my MBP 2013.

Either use a xx30 and below or any MacBook from 2015 and before until Apple irons out the 2016's kinks in 2018. Its not difficult. What are you doing that can't be accomplished on a W530?

Kernel panic is basically a blue screen. In practice, it's like a hardlock where the only way to recover is to hard reset the computer. It's only happened when I was doing stuff in VMWare Fusion, so it may be VMWare being shitty.
