I have a Leopold FC900R with brown Cherry MX switches. While I'm totally fine with these, I've heard you can do much better. I otherwise really like how the keyboard looks and all, is it that difficult to resolder some blue Gaterons or whatever on there?
>>
>>59873211
>is it that difficult to resolder some blue Gaterons or whatever on there?
we you never soldered before, don't start by desoldering your nice and shiny Leopold. you can actually fuck up by burning your pcb traces
>>
>>59873211
It's easy as shit, but I've soldered a lot of small shit and I do not know if you have.

Managed to get this IBM Model M Industrial M13 for a great price. The top case is pretty badly scuffed but apart from that it's in great condition. Just replaced the cable with a nice brand new black coiled one.
>>
I have a rubber dome Model M as well as the buckling spring one. The rubber dome version sucks ass
>>
>>59873416
I've found the rubber dome M2's to be very good and very tactile, similar to BTC domes and possibly topre. The Model M(1) rubber domes on the other hand do suck.

Thanks for this. Looks like a neat site with lots of (reasonably priced?) caps.

Was looking at AliExpress earlier today and even chinks are becoming way too greedy now. They have whole keycap sets for $80-90 USD. LOL! wtf man...

Okay, so I'm looking to replace that Win key with Tux key but I'm not sure what size key I need.

I now understand what these R things mean but in this infographic, bottom row has no R number. WTF?

Also, is Win key 1x1 or 1x1.25? I'm guessing it's 1x1.25 (that's the width, right?)

Anyone have a better infographic?
>>
I got this keyboard for gaming recently because I wanted a tenkeyless and I actually really like these "new" romer-g switches a bit more than the mx browns on my other keyboard.
>>

Browns are shit, every switch is better than a brown. IIRC the romer-g switches are similar to blues.

Dye-sub PBT of that quality is expensive. Look for other sets by BSP and SP. Even the Ducky dye-sub PBT sets are like 70 bucks

1u is the key all your letters probably use. 1.5u would be a key that is 1.5x as wide as a 1u key, 2u means 2 times as wide...
what you need depends on your keycaps. Instead of tux i recommend either a blank (no print) super key or a gnu super key.
does your keyboard use cherry style switches?
Alternatively if you are not using a mech keyboard depending on the keycap material and make you may be able to use sandpaper to remove the pad printing.

I consider a tkl realforce but I can't get the HHKB out of my head.

one thing that has always bothered be about mech keyboards is the very bottom row (pic related... see that sharp edge?). The angles on it are all wrong. I don't use a palm rest and my keyboard is slightly above my elbows (desk's too high) so the outside edge of the bottom row was painful to use with my thumbs.

I finally pulled all they bottom keycaps and rotated them 180 degrees. It's fucking amazing how much better it now feels. The sharp edge is gone and when you use bottom row with the side of your thumb, there's no pain anymore!

Anyone else tried doing that?

>>
>>59874518
Try to find Novatouch. 45g Topre, TKL, and cherrymx stems. That last part is great because you can find cheap keycaps. HHKB and Topre keycaps are always 2-4x more expensive... because they like to make money off ppl who buy expensive keyboards.

Repost from last thread because I got nowhere.

Oi /mkg/, I've been looking at getting some linear switches, as I've been using tactiles for a while, and I want to try something linear and quiet for late night funposting, but every time I've tried a cherry red or black board, they've always have felt so grainy and plastic-y.
I've looked into things like gateron reds, and they look great, but I've hardly have found any gateron red boards, and the ones I have found are either way too expensive for a board using cherry clones, or have an odd layout.
For example, this monoprice board would be great (https://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=13787), but the enter key and that little cluster is a complete turn off for that board.

And just to help narrow down;

Garerons are better then cherry shit. If anything paying more then 50 bucks for those shit switches is a dumb thing to do. Shame though that gateron doesn't make clones of cherry clears. I would totally pay 100 bucks for a keyboard with those
>>
>>59876909
The fact there's boards within the shit tier budget area with gateron switches would lead me to believe that there'd be more in that range, but $70 for a board like that (like pretty much the only gateron keyboard on Amazon) is a bit pushing it

Most gateron keyboards are in the 40-80 price range depending on what you want. I know the magicforce68 is a popular one that gets a lot of recommendations here, but it isn't full size. I remember there were full size magicforce keyboards on aliexpress for like 60 bucks. There are a few Plums with gaterons, but those are close to 100 bucks. I think there are a few james donkey keyboards that use gaterons as well

Current one is just some membrane IBM keyboard.

Considering I will not lie that I have been looking at the Razer Blackwidow V2 due in part that Cherry MX Blue RGB switches are a rarity in boards and Corsair outright stopped using them in their current and future boards due to supposed quality issues with the switches. Considering this and knowing that the Razer/Greetech Greens are fairly similar to MX Blues I have been leaning on that side of things. Plus it would be nice to have a kind of software to customize the RGB effects.

While I know that going to Razer is a shitty choice for a multitude of reasons, I honestly do not know if there are many options out there that fit what I am really looking for.

You can order original cherry board from amazon. They are 60£ new, but quite often you can buy used ones in excellent condition for 40.

it does make your keyboard quieter, it also changes how each keypress feels if you bottom out, obviously it does fuck all for clicky switches.

Wrong
The sound of bottoming out is louder then the actuating mechanism, sono-rings will indeed make clicky switches quieter. Of course it will have more of a diffrence on non clicky switches.

>>59886836
true, bit if you're using clicky or tactile and you're still bottoming out, you're a bad typist.

Hey all,

I'm thinking about buying my first mechanical keyboard. I do a lot of typing and mechanical keyboards sound like a joy to use, and they look great. Here's something I've been wondering about:

The great thing about mechanical keyboards are their switches. Let's say I sample a few different switches and I find myself enjoying the Cherry MX Blue. If I were to now try other keyboards which also use the Blue switch, would they all feel the same? Basically if I enjoy one particular type of switch, can I safely buy other keyboards with the same switch without too much of a variance in feel?
>>
>>59884721
What webapp is that?
>>
>>59887600
Do you mean if something like a Gateron or Kailh Blue would feel like a Cherry one? Clones are generally similar, but not the exact same. Gaterons for example are a lot smoother in general, and blues specifically are usually regarded as louder than Cherry ones. Other clones are more similar, but usually might be a bit of a step down in overall quality.
>>
>>59887625
inputclub's configurator
>>
>>59887639
Not about clones, sorry if I wasn't clear. When shopping for mechanical keyboards the thing to look out for is the type of switch, right? That's what it's all about. If I press a Cherry MX Blue switch on one keyboard, that will feel the same as another Cherry MX Blue switch on another keyboard. The LEDs, size of the keyboard, all the bells and whistles, that's just aesthetic stuff.
>>
>>59887761
Pretty much. There are ways to change the feeling with dampeners and clips, but yeah a Ducky with cherry mx blues will feel the same as a cooler master with mx blues.
>>
>>59887761
The switch itself should feel the same, however, bottoming out can still vary. Different backplates can feel and sound slightly different. It's not a massive thing, but an aluminum backplate isn't the same as a plastic one, but it only really affects bottoming out. This chart posted above is pretty relevant >>59886836
Blues are regarded as the loudest switch, but you can see that browns on the BlackWidow can get even louder, which almost certainly is related to its backplate. Not sure how much keycaps affect that, but it's probably minor.
All that said, the switches will feel the same regardless of what keyboard you buy.

I didn't realise when I bought it. It has 7 colours, each has 3 brightness levels and I can put it in a "breathing mode" so it fades in and out through different colours.

It's a lot tougher to press the keys and also very loud. I'd prefer something gentler and quieter to type with.

Nice. I'm looking at this picture here:
http://i.imgur.com/p86x8kS.gif

And I found a keyboard on banggood that is offering "yellow" switches, which aren't in the description. Is this a new type? The product description says that "Yellow switches are linear (non-tactile) switches, very silent.
Suitable for typing and gaming."

Is that legit or some sort of made up switch by them?
>>
>>59896613
Well I'm using one right now because I won't turn down a somewhat expensive gift. It feels very solid and a big upgrade over my non-mechanical one.
>>
>>59896647
Who's making the switch? Gateron? Kailh? Other manufacturers use their own naming schemes so that picture would only apply to cherry switches. Linear style MX switches would function similarly to reds and blacks, but the manufacturer might change the weight of the spring. From the sound of things this might be kailhs clone of cherry silents which are just dampened MX blacks and reds to reduce noise. Gateron also makes yellow switches, so the could be modified gateron yellows.
>>
>>59896647
what keyboard? I'm gonna guess that its just gateron yellows

Those are a 50g linear switch that I guess gateron still makes. It's pretty much an obsolete switch.

Programmable keyboards question:
Can you have an entire 3 paragraphs of text linked to a single key on a secondary layer? Could I have a series of large chunks of text, like form letters I send repeatedly, linked on keys in a function layer? How difficult is it to actually program this type of keyboard? I could get by with a 40% but it would be very handy to have 6 different form letters I use repeatedly all at a combo keypress away. Happy Hacking, Pok3r and Core aren't programmable. Which ones are that have a decent UI?

PBT is a much more durable plastic. It doesn't yellow over time like ABS, and is much more resistant to the oils in your skin. Cheap ABS will end up looking like this after a couple months, while PBT can take several years, or even decades to look as bad. But its harder to work with if you want to doubleshot it. My guess is that Ducky had some production problems so they delayed it. Also you could just use google

It would be ideal programming the formatted long text macros into the keyboard itself. The B. Fake may not be rugged enough as a fully enclosed case would be. Thank you though.

That is my use case. Heck, even storing a paragraph of text onto a key would be alright. Maybe I'll just get a Pok3r / Core and do a couple sentences each onto a series of keys in a row.

Are your wrists bending at different angles when you're using the two boards? What kind of switch are you using?

are you resting your wrists on the laptop?
>>

>>59906573
Even "programmable" keyboard will have maximum character limit. ie Mechmini has 42 character limit per key. Nobody really use it or know what saying. Get Pok3r.
>>
>>59907869
now this is what I call placebo, also clicky a shit, linears master race
>>
>>59907927
Yes, but what am I supposed to do with them?
The keyboard its quite high up.
>>
>>59908046
simple don't rest your wrists. When typing you hand should hover over the keyboard
>>
>>59907628
You chose poorly. At least you tried, right?
>>
>>59905565
Is there any reason you think it will be that long? It says on the website "Please have your orders in by 4/30/2017".
>>
>>59908067
Out of curiosity, why? What's the reason for not doing this? Aren't wrist rests a thing?
>>
>>59908200
There have been several studies into this and ideally you'd want to have your keyboard lay flat with your hands hovering over the keys. An arm rest is fine, but putting ant pressure on your wrists is bad. It's true that wrist rests are a thing, but that doesn't mean they are good for you. If you do get one try your best to use it as a palm rest instead.
>>
>>59908200
It puts pressure on the nerves and locks the wrists in place. People do it because there's a lot of misinformation on the subject.

Help me out, /mkg/. I was recently gifted a $500 best buy card and was thinking of getting a mechanical keyboard with it. Are there any keyboards there that would actually be worth buying? Best choice I've seen so far is the Orion 610, but I thought I'd ask here first.
>>
>>59910158
Did you try it out in-store to see if you'd like it?
>>
>>59910204
The two closest stores to me didn't have it on display.
>>
I want to buy Rantopad MXX Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with blue Gateron switches, because from what i read they are like a blue cherry copy but smoother and cheap without being super shitty, but i am not sure yet without knowing of what plastic are the keycaps made of. Does anyone know this? I searched the specs in their website but it is not listed.
Also is this a good decision? I wanted a blue cherry MX switches but they are too expensive to start with, and saw that Gateron where kinda similar but cheaper. Also TKL, and NKRO.
>>
>>59910158
Spend that money and get a high refresh rate monitor. They're only like 200 bucks
As for keyboards get don't bother with the selection best buy has.
>>
>>59910286
Did they have any mechs on sale?
>>
>>59910388
they do, but they are all razer, logitech and corsair keyboards

Just ordered a Leopold TKL in white with blue cherries.
Hopefully it will be good.
I already just received a lioncast lk20, which is alright, but I dislike black and they failed to ship me the ansi version (biggest dealbreaker).
Glued in switches is another minus.
It's pretty good to write on, but has tacky logos and such.
I will return it once I have the leopold (which looks pretty awesome).

Ok here one for you guys:

> Budget:

$150 us.

> Form factor

I want the case to be on level I don't really know how to put it, I want the switch to be alligned with the place instead of inset. Like this

https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/6748535/DSCF3628.0.jpg

instead of this:

http://thewirecutter.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/mechanicalkeyboards-lowres-6917.jpg

LED:

White if possible

The image attached to my post is what I would want if I could find one for 150-175 but until there is another massdrop I'm probably out of luck.
>>
>>59873164
Need a numpad. Wanted to get the KC21 but that's exclusive to massdrop it seems and has QC problems anyways. Any idea what to get? Budget is irrelevant, would prefer one with some F-keys and something I wouldnt have to build myself. Everything else in the template doesnt matter but Im currently using black anne pro with all-black keycaps if that's needed. Must not look dorky like the ducky one with the stupid calculator; just plain and simple

Looks pretty nice, price is ridiculous but I guess I did say irrelevant. Though I cant find much info on it. Do I have to register to that "geekhack" forum and request it from that nerd making them? or is there an actual distributor?
>>
What do you guys think of the AULA Wings of Liberty? Is it worth it?
>>
>>59913755
It was a one time only run, so you're going to have to buy it from someone else who's got one. I believe NPKC makes a programmable numpad
>>
>>59913689
Do you know of a good numberpad in the $40 range?
