I've been using the SSK for some time now and I'm not really missing the number pad. The higher profile keycaps threw me off at first, but it only took me a day to get used to. I was worried at first about using a heavier switch in normal use and it really hasn't impacted my typing performance. Overall buckling springs are great to type and the smaller size compared to the massive model M is great if you don't have a lot of desk space like me.

Getting any Model F is not easy. Especially the 60 and 75% variants

There are only three known Model F 77's
and only a handful of F62's

The 'new' model f reproductions are still being built and wont be delivered until late this year for early bird low serials only

The best Model F you can buy right now is an F107

HHKB but specifically topre in general have one extreme flaw - rubber dome.

These domes do in fact stiffen over time and will eventually become about as much use as a foam and foil board.

A laptop?

I've been eyeing the Asus Claymore as a possibility.

One of the things that I like about my laptop is that it types relatively quiet. I like the idea and weightiness of a mechanical keyboard but I've used some friends and it's CLICK CLACK CLACK CLICK which is fine if I lived by myself but I have a wife who is a light sleeper.

Is it possible to get a mechanical keyboard that's pretty quiet or is it hopeless and i should just invest in a good pair of earplugs?
>>
>>59835755
Forgot to mention: Can you damage the keyboard if you typing turns out to bed "heavy" but you end up using Reds/Browns/Blues?
>>
>>59835755
All Mech keyboards are gonna be loud, but what I would recommend is a topre board
>>
>>59835755
There are quiet cherry switches if you want, but they are mostly found on gaymer boards, with the exception of Leopold and Filco. You can get those here:

I've been thorough when it comes to deciding switches and i somehow always seem to like the sound they make and actuation point these keys require the most.

I have been using the Realforce RGB for about a month or two. This is my first Topre board. I am very impressed with how good it feels. Swapping on some PBT caps really helped it sound better, but I want some high profile caps. The only ones I can find are those nice dark brown ones that Filco put out. Either way, if I could only own one keyboard right now, it'd be this one. I will buy another Realforce to take to work someday.

I don't think that's a problem with something that you can't use in the first place. See, back in early 2016 this keyboard was shilled relentlessly by me and this italian guy. Little did people then know that the keyboard is not actually a functional keyboard. It does not send any information to the computer, all the usb connection does is power an internal microphone and some capacitative sensor that detect when a key is touched. Notice that I said touched, as you can't press the keys down, they are completely static. Upon a key being touched, an internal microphone plays a high quality flac file of a female voice saying "thock" with a strong french accent. Not making a "thock" sound, just literally saying "thock". Everyone who praises this keyboard is simply acting as if it were an actual keyboard out of buyers remorse. Thus it is the greatest meme of all, and grants the owners the maximal number of attainable meme points.
>>

>>

Since its plate mount you cant take the switch apart without desoldering, so instead get an eyedropper and inject alcohol into the switch directly, then press it a several times until it doesn't feel sticky. Finally rinse it with distilled water and let it dry completely.

I've tried asking this before, but got no response so I'll try again. Has anybody here tried backlighting keys by running an individual fiber optic strand to each key? If so, how did you "feed" the light from an LED into the fiber optic strands to begin with? I'm basically just looking for a part name or phrase that I can google without getting a list of expensive, high-end fiber optic interconnects.

Second, I already have a teensy 3.2 from an unrelated project, but it seems like the 2.0++ would be the device of choice for most DIY builds that include LED controls. Is there any *physical* reason the 3.2 wouldn't work? The 3.2 has 33 pins already, so the pin count should be sufficient. I don't care about existing firmware, because I can probably write my own if I have to. I'm just wondering if there are any reasons to not use a teensy 3.2 that I'm unaware of.
>>
>>59832703
>Abandons F10-12 just so the rows can be even
Man fuck this one
>>
>>59843422
Fiber optics suck for lighting. If you've ever played with toys that use fiber optics then you should know they degrade pretty quickly and end up looking like shit. Plus the lighting isn't very consistent. If you ever go to tech fairs they always give away fiber optic necklaces/wrist bands for free and those especially suck. I guess as long as the LED points into the wire then you should be fine. Using your old teensy is fine since TMK is compatible with it.

I just got my first mech keyboard last week. One thing I have about is the feel of the keys. Too many "sharp" corners on it that hurt my fingers when I make a mistake and don't hit the key perfectly in the center.

Are there any keycaps you'd recommend? Are there any keycaps that are more forgiving?

Thanks.

One more questions for you or someone else who knows... I've seen keycap heights as R1 through R5. Are all keyboards compatible with all these key heights? What key height should I go with? Any pros/cons of lower height ones?
>>
File: Keycap profiles.jpg (499KB, 1600x3600px) Image search: [Google]
Keycap profiles.jpg
499KB, 1600x3600px
>>59845059
That just refers to the height of the keycap. If you take a look at cherry profile you'll see that row 1 is lower in height then row 5. In other sets like DSA they are all the same height. What this means is that if rearrange your keycaps your keyboard will look weird since R3 is next to R5. The height of the keycap has nothing to do with compatibility.
>>
>>59845128
Ahh, OK!

Another question... are there any places that you'd recommend for buying a variety of "novelty" keycaps that I can play with? One thing that bothers me are MS Win keys. Would like to replace those with something else ASAP.

I remember seeing small "baggies" of various keycaps for cheap.

Laptops, membranes, current is a Corsair K70, but I want a tkl, save the space on my desk considering I don't even use the numpad.

Been looking at the Ducky One and the Logitech G Pro. Before anyone asks I am indeed autistic, the rgb is part of the reason I looked at the g pro. I plan to set the lights to a slight blue and purple glow, I have stress issues and it relaxes me.

Was also hoping to find something with a metal backplate, but it's not a deal breaker.
>>
>>59845489
The Ducky One RGB has a steel back plate, but its 10 bucks over your budget. There is a version with PBT keycaps, but that's only available fro pre-order
>>
>>59845489
Get a chink keyboard like keycool or e-element
>>
>>59838385
The Plum 84 I got is pretty nice. It's my first sub-TKL board that I got and I like the form factor. Switches are nice too. I'm going to save up for a Type-S JP and get a hasu controller so I can program the Jap keys.
>>
>>59845545
I would consider the Ducky One RGB despite the price because I'm aware of it's quality. I was more looking for something with an external metal backplate though, but like I originally said it really doesn't matter, I just like the look of metal over plastic.

I was also looking at the MK Disco, but I'm not able to find much reliable info on KBT switches. I've read they are comparable to vortex and gateron, but I've got no experience with those 2 either.
>>59845577
I'd like a quality product, I'm sure I'll get some shit for saying it considering I'm looking at RGB, and my previous best keyboard is a Corsair, but oh well.

I'm going to fall for the mech meme, and I'm looking for a 60%. I'm struggling a little bit with the standard/ layout choice. I want a french azerty layout, so an ISO standardized keyboard. I'm interested with the WASD VP3 since I can customize it a lot, but they are two models, the 61 and 62 keys. Looking at the layout I think 62 keys suits me more, amirite ? Thanks to this anon's >>59848016 opinion that I should go for it, I picked up Novatouch with Topre keys. It has Cherry MX compatible stems so adding keys is dead simple.

Fucking amazing for $75. Only the cable's nylon webbing has a bit of fraying on it but they keyboard itself is absolutely spotless without a single scratch on it. Even the every single key is spotless and there's no dust on it either. Sorry for my webcam shot... need to replace that too.

I had my SSK plugged into my computer, while also having another keyboard plugged in. When I toggled num lock on my other keyboard it also toggled num lock on my SSK. Didn't know it does that. This is nice since the SSK doesn't have LEDs on it so if I press caps lock on my SSK the LED lights up on my other keyboard.

It goes by name:

>37cmx8cmx2cm PC PU Leather 87-Keys Hand Palm Support Pad Keyboard Wrist Rest

on ebay and others sites (there's literally dozens of sellers of the exact same thing) and 37cm is 14.5" which is exactly the width of Novatouch. 2cm is roughly 3/4" which is exactly the height of Novatouch. Looks like a perfect match. I'm guessing all other 87key keyboards have more or less same dimensions.

so the ducky pocket came. compared to right is ducky shine 1. i actually fucking hate the new cherry RGB crap. notice how on the old LED system on the right that there's almost zero light spilling out under the keycaps while on the left even though the backlit keys themselves aren't that bright, lights floods everywhere. also the white gives a tinge of rainbow at various colors. guess ill just live with it but at least i know never to change out my shine 1.

Oi /mkg/, I've been looking at getting some linear switches, as I've been using tactiles for a while, and I want to try something linear and quiet for late night funposting, but every time I've tried a cherry red or black board, they've always have felt so grainy and plastic-y.
I've looked into things like gateron reds, and they look great, but I've hardly have found any gateron red boards, and the ones I have found are either way too expensive for a board using cherry clones, or have an odd layout.
For example, this monoprice board would be great (https://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=13787), but the enter key and that little cluster is a complete turn off for that board.

And just to help narrow down;

Logitech G710+

So far the Razer's been my favorite, the greetech switches are so much better than the previous kailh switches, feels right up there with cherry imo.

the monoprice one, after taxes and shipping, would only be $45 and also has a metal backplate. Backlighting makes no difference to me, so to me, I'm only paying for the layout and the metal body even though the monoprice one has a metal backplate and is sturdy enough.
If possible, I'd actually like the plastic outer casing so I could mod and paint it.

I want to meme it up and I'm looking for memeposting tips

- How do I not come off as desperate and lonely but still post as much of my possessions as possible?
- When is it too much? I like a veneer of authenticity, I want my purchasing habits to come off as worthwhile hobbies, not mindless consumerism and bragging.
- What are some good "hobbies" to pursue alongside mechanical keyboards? I don't want to come off as entry level and I see you guys are branching out as well. Headphones? Pens? Small potted plants?
- I can easily afford keycaps, but I don't want to buy this overpriced crap out of principle. Is there an alternative way to meme?
- Is dumpster diving for Model Ms desperate, tryhard and entry level behavior? People who post these have this air of desperately trying to fit in but I'm unsure if it's working or not and if it's something I have to do as well. In short, Model M = authentic hobbyist or Model M = hobo?
- Which subreddits do you post in?
- Recommend me a good DSLR for meme photos.
- I have no problem buying niche abominations such as 30% keyboards that I will never use (I mean come on), but if I'm buying useless crap, I want to invest smart and go straight for the meme - recs are appreciated.

You can't, that's why you embrace it.
>- When is it too much? I like a veneer of authenticity, I want my purchasing habits to come off as worthwhile hobbies, not mindless consumerism and bragging.
There is no such thing as too much. People pay several thousand dollars for keyboards just because they have a slightly darker color to them.
>- What are some good "hobbies" to pursue alongside mechanical keyboards? I don't want to come off as entry level and I see you guys are branching out as well. Headphones? Pens? Small potted plants?
Pens and audiophile stuff is okay, but you could always branch out into guns, cars/motorcycles, or even HAM radio.
>- I can easily afford keycaps, but I don't want to buy this overpriced crap out of principle. Is there an alternative way to meme?
Most great keycap sets will cost you well over 60 bucks. Anything from Gateron/EnjoyPBT or GMK will last you a long time. Unfortunately for you custom keycaps will always be expensive while not really offering and substantial improvement in quality to say a keyboard that comes with gateron dye-sub PBT keycaps as stock.

The model M has a unique typing experience as the tactile and audible feedback happen at the exact moment of actuation. No other switch does that, and coupled with the fast reset time, it really makes it an enjoyable typing experience. I have and while its lots of fun to type in the large size and loud noise might put some people off. Model Ms are also pretty common keyboards, you should be able to walk into most thrift stores and buy one. You can still get brand new Model Ms today since Unicomp still makes them. So I'm looking for a new mechanical keyboard:

1) Budget
$200

2) Location

3) Preffered switch type

4) Layout

- 100%

6) Backlight

Also would be nice if it has a built in usb hub

But then how some of you come off as so cool? I want to be like that.

This is a relief. So basically I can just buy whatever and it's all good as long as I have a quality established taste?

>Pens and audiophile stuff is okay, but you could always branch out into guns, cars/motorcycles, or even HAM radio.
I think cars/bikes are too much of a chad vibe and HAM radio is almost fedora tier. I'll consider guns, perhaps go for that classic anime figurine / gun juxtaposition.

>Most great keycap sets will cost you well over 60 bucks. Anything from Gateron/EnjoyPBT or GMK will last you a long time. I'm just looking for a way of not buying keycaps at all. I know the machines are expensive and demand/supply is skewed towards demand and I understand why it's expensive. But I'm thinking ahead and I know when I'm over the meme, I won't be able to live with myself knowing I spent actual money on fucking keyboard keycaps.

Yeah, I know all that, I used one of these as a kid. Hated everything about it. But I'm willing to go back if that's what it takes to meme.

>This is a relief. So basically I can just buy whatever and it's all good as long as I have a quality established taste?
Pretty much, just don't by consumer shit like corsair or razer. A good place to look for keyboards to buy is geekhack.
>I think cars/bikes are too much of a chad vibe and HAM radio is almost fedora tier. I'll consider guns, perhaps go for that classic anime figurine / gun juxtaposition.
I was thinking about weeaboo cars and bikes like the AE86 and TX750?, I forgot what that bike was was called. Anime figurines are always a great choice and as for guns, well depending on what you want those are usually gonna be a lot more expensive then keyboards.
>I'm just looking for a way of not buying keycaps at all. I know the machines are expensive and demand/supply is skewed towards demand and I understand why it's expensive. Don't worry your in good company. If you splurge $150 on some SP keycaps understand that its just scratching the surface. Just look at how much people pay for key clack artisan keycaps like pic related. If you get a keyboard with high quality keycaps like the tada68 you wouldn't have to worry about replacing them.
>Yeah, I know all that, I used one of these as a kid. Hated everything about it. But I'm willing to go back if that's what it takes to meme.
The model M is a pretty common keyboard. If you want meme status then get the industrial variants or the SSK. A model F would be better, but if you don't mind paying a couple grand for an industrial SSK just to get bonus meme points then go for it

The HHKB has been around since the mid 90s and has gotten its meme status due its prestige. It was almost 200 bucks in 1995 so the price really hasn't changed over the past 20 years, but the quality has definitely improved. Many programmers like RMS and Bjarne Stroustrup have used a HHKB as their daily driver. If you don't feel like buying one then you could get something like the planck. Its a 40% ortholinear keyboard that's relatively cheap compared to similar keyboards. You could buy one and just use it for meme points. If you want a lot of meme points then just go to geekwhack and buy a korean custom. Something like pic related actually costs $250 and it doesn't include switches or keycaps
