How are cherry clear switches? I'm a mechanical keyboard newb and was looking at the Coder's 60% keyboard with cherry clears. I was looking at it because for gaming, QWERTY is good. I want to increase my typing speed and being able to on the fly switch to DVORAK would be nice.

I'm currently on a cherry red board from Corsair. The ten keyless model K65.

I like them, and I think they're Cherry's best switch. A lot of people think that clears are too heavy for them, though. They have the heaviest bottom out force out of Cherry's switches. They're much heavier than blues. It might be hard to game on them.

Personally, I had no problem with clears and I have "girly" hands. I don't game, though. Honestly, it all depends on your own preference. I don't think you'll be able to find any MX Clear board near you, but if you can try out something with MX Blacks at a local store, you can gauge if you like the weight, because they're similar.
You can also just not bottom out the clears, but some people find that difficult to do.

Yea I bottom out reds. I'm very heavy handed. I really wanted a 60% board though. Unsure if I should go clear then if they're that heavy. Ugh. Just want a cool backlit 60% board with blank caps. I'm forever stuck at 95 WPM and it's getting me down.

What is the best full sized keyboard for $125?
>>
>>59914750
Yes, I do. I should of asked if the type of plastic for kecaps affects how quick it gets dirty.
>>
>>59914629
Got one already, it's pretty nice.

Only downside is they made it use a CR2032 button cell which doesn't provide enough power to run the screen's backlight, so if you want to use it independently in the dark you'll need an external battery bank for it.
>>
>>59914844
Sad.

How easy would it be to add a bigger battery?
>>
>>59914533
Clears are like a heavy brown with a more noticeable tactile bump. It's a bit hard to describe really, they're not like Blues. Blues have a "sharp" and "concise" feel to them, clicky describes them very well in terms of both sound and feel. Clears are not like that, I guess I'd say a Clear is more like rolling over a bump, there's no precise, sharp click feel to them like on Blues. They're also heavy, I use a Clear keyboard at work and it's the heaviest I've ever used. I like it, but if you're used to light switches or soft rubber domes the feel of Clears may be a bit of a shock.
>>
>>59914759
if you are heavy-handed it should not be a big deal. I was really nervous when I bought my cherry clear keyboard, thinking that I wouldn't like the weight. But I actually love them. Ultimately, you aren't going to know unless you try it.

>not going to know unless I try it

I know but the problem is that none if my local shops have clears in stock. Ever. Every other color but never clear. Hmm. Maybe I'll just buy it and take a leap of faith.
>>
>>59914921
Dunno, I haven't managed to get it open yet. There's four screws in the plate, but it still holds together with them out and nothing else is visible (or hidden under the rubber bumpers, the metal serial number plate or the battery compartment).
>>
>>59915072
every other color? you should try out the blacks and greens then, if you haven't already. they're similar in weight to the clears, if you like them then buying clears will be less a leap and more a hop. I own both clears and blacks, and only feel a small difference in terms of weighting.

I've got this keyboard. It's my first mechanical keyboard so I can't give much of a review, but I quite like it. The keys are definitely heavy, but it's very satisfying to type on. Other switches kind of feel cheap to me.

It looks really nice as well with the white lighting and backdrop. The picture doesn't really do it justice.

I really like the look of those 60% keyboards, but I'm a bit worried about loss of functionality.

Sure I lose a numpad which is a bummer, but how do you use the Function keys and what not? Does it work like on laptops where you hold some function key in combination?
>>
>>59919160
Yeah, it usually works like that, where you hold Fn and press a key so it has a different function. Some boards allow you to set up shortcuts to completely switch to a different layer, so you don't need to hold Fn, just press a combination, say Fn+2 for example, and switch to layer 2 where you have different commands programmed on everything, and then switching back to a more regular layout with Fn+1.

Also how does the KBParadise V80 hold up anyway?
>>
>>59920269
I don't have one, but after reading some online reviews they seem to have firmware problems. Those are old reviews so maybe they fixed them. To be honest if you want doubleshot keycaps then just get a keyboard with them already. Ducky Ones cost between 80-90 bucks

I need a cheap DSA keycap set for cheap. Something that has legends on it. I can't stand this OEM set anymore because it only works well with my hands when the feet of my keyboard are up... and keyboard feet are the fucking cancer and cause RSI.

I've been looking at DSA keycaps but they're all:

1) expensive ($100+ for TKL)
2) cheap but no legends of any kind
3) sold out

Can someone pls help me out?
>>
>>59920521
Get chink DSA sets. They are still expensive, but at least they give you a full set

Anon, I looked at that one. Too expensive. You can buy Dolsch (OEM) for like $25. You can buy the same set but without legends for 1/3 of the price.

I'm not gonna pay $70 for a chink knockoff that also looks like shit. If I'm gonna spend that much, I might as well buy an SP set for $30 more.

That's actually my current keyboard.
As for the V80 I guess I'll have a more detailed look but I'm leaning towards just sticking with the laser etched set since it's landslides better than my laptop's keyboard which is what it will pretty much be connected to 24/7.
This is the blue set that I wasn't very fond of after seeing the vintage set.

$4 Scissor switch keyboard. Fantastic and lasted a few years but recently died. Picked up some HP membrane thing but I'm not too fond of it.

I'm just after a nice clean mechanical keyboard without any outrageous fonts or designs. The Ducky One looks pretty neat; it's got all the keys I need, minimalist design, and the LEDs are a bonus.

I really like the compact look of the 60% and less keyboards, and the very small / lack of bezel so you can see under the keys.

Any help much appreciated. Cheers.

I wanna design my own keycaps. See a lot of them on Massdrop and most look like total shit. I can do better. I have some cool ideas that I tested out on a few keyboards that I assembled from parts.

Anyone have some advice on how to go about it? This is probably a money losing endeavor but I'll be happy if I break even and don't lose much. I already wasted too much time as it is so it can't be much worse.

HALP!
>>
>>59924488
>I'll be happy if I break even
Lol keep dreaming. Well you aren't the first person who wants to attempt such a task. Matt3o has created his own hi-pro keycaps so just read about how he did it. If you have any questions just ask him.
>>
>>59924488
what new thing will you be adding to the "keyboard market"? from that picture it looks like you're designing a new keyboard profile? It's not impossible obviously as >>59924624 said.

but it'll be hard to be successful if you don't create something for which the "market" feels a real need. recently there's been new profile popping up like XDA and other spherical SP-like keycaps. and those things are fairly successful because many people want an alternative to Signature Plastics, whose keycaps are thin and can be extremely expensive.

on the other hand if you are creating a cherry or OEM-like profile I think you'll have a hard time because people are already very happy with GMK ABS and PBT cherry profile keycaps. I can only see you being successful if you find a way to make them cheap.

>most look like total shit
I don't know what you mean by this. If you mean the candy-coloured eyesores like Miami maybe all you care about is the colour? in the case you can just run a group buy for your own colourway. that's completely doable and it's how most popular keycap sets get produced.

>>
>>59924794
>the "keyboard market"? from that picture it looks like you're designing a new keyboard profile? It's not impossible obviously as >>59924624 said.
Yes! It's definitely a new profile because I'm unsatisfied with many of the current ones. It's also close to a profile of an older keyset from 1980s that I'm really fond of. I've showed the prototype to two people I know and they tried it and liked it a lot. They weren't bullshitting me either because they were not my friends and just enthusiasts I met on twitter that lived closed to me.

>and those things are fairly successful because many people want an alternative to Signature Plastics, whose keycaps are thin and can be extremely expensive.
Right. I understand where these people are coming from. I like these newer caps myself. I don't get why there's so much hate for SP though. SP can make thicker keys but at and increased price. Since they're based in the US, prices is already 2x higher than chinese clones.

I wouldn't mind letting SP make my caps at all.

>on the other hand if you are creating a cherry or OEM-like profile I think you'll have a hard time because people are already very happy with GMK ABS and PBT cherry profile keycaps. I can only see you being successful if you find a way to make them cheap.
Definitely not. I got rid of my OEM set long time ago because I couldn't stand the angle of R4. I's also fond of ErgoDox so I made caps that work well with it as well. But yeah, OEM/Cherry space is too crowded to be successful.

>I don't know what you mean by this. If you mean the candy-coloured eyesores like Miami maybe all you care about is the colour? in the case you can just run a group buy for your own colourway. that's completely doable and it's how most popular keycap sets get produced.
Yes, most of the caps on Mass are gaudy. I used a neutral color scheme with only few accented colors. You can actually use these caps in an office and people won't look at it and make assumptions about you.

It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into this. I don't have very much advice other than to be prepared for failure. Most group-buys do fail. That said, I don't think it's impossible.

Since it's going to be something new, maybe you could look into partnering with an established vendor once you have better prototypes. keyclack or originative maybe... I don't know how much /mkg/ hates them but that way, you're more likely to get buyers.

you haven't detailed very much about the actual design, which I understand because it's in progress. But you should definitely show people as you're designing it, maybe in the later stages, to get more feedback. the IC stage is very important for the group buy.

>I wouldn't mind letting SP make my caps at all.
Speaking of SP, new tooling is expensive... 7bit spent a lot of money just to get SP to fix their Backspace molds to change it from "back space" to "backspace". And that was just for one key. SP keycaps are expensive but their molds are already made. New keycaps are going to be more expensive than that. So I'm not sure what you're planning as far as legends go, but I think you should just release blanks first since it's a new profile. It'll make them a lot cheaper since you won't have to pay for doubleshotting/dye-subbing.

talking to people who have already done this kind of thing is probably more helpful than shitposters on /mkg/ as well.

you should be apprehensive about success, but I do think you should keep going with it.

>>
>>59927351
>That said, I don't think it's impossible.
I might give it a try but need to work out few things in advance.

I feel like caps are like 80% done. There's still room for improvement and still some things that need to be tweaked. Then there's an issue with properly preparing them for mold injection and shrinkage etc. As for molds, I think I'd have to have those made since the caps are not standard type caps. This would be a LOT cheaper in China.

Now, here's few of my options:

1) Get a group buy going on Massdrop (how to do that I don't know right now) and then pay for molds etc from that pot.
2) Kickstarter or Indiegogo. Not sure if anyone has attempted that one. Again, same thing as Massdrop: collect initial funds and pay for molds from that.
3) Contact SP and other companies to see if they'd buy the design. I'd wager this is a low-probability option.

Not sure what the best way to proceed would be. Thoughts?

>you should be apprehensive about success, but I do think you should keep going with it.
Thanks anon! You know, as I mentioned, this is not going to be a very profitable endeavor (I know I'll lose due to opportunity cost since my time is not free) but I'd like to see them made because I'd like to use a set of them since 3D printed ones work so well for me. I'd love to see them made in PBT.

Like I said, I have an angle for marketing this thing and it would excite a bunch of people. I mean, I'm not marketing just a color or some sublimated design of some cap. I think it has a good chance of selling.

>>
>>59930693
the biggest problem i can see with your plan 1 and 2 is that you're paying for the molds after you get the money. i'm not sure if people will be willing to pay without seeing the product/samples first, unless you already have a reputation like that matt3o and his hi-pro keycaps. even if you have 3d printed samples. is working solo something you are adamant about? it's understandable if that's the case, but working with someone who has a reputation will definitely help, if you're okay with doing that.
plan 2 doesn't sound very good to me because keyboard stuff usually doesn't get sold there...

>I have an angle for marketing this thing and it would excite a bunch of people
I sincerely hope this is true, because
>I'm not marketing just a color or some sublimated design of some cap
unfortunately those have a higher chance of success because people know what to expect for those. usually people don't want to buy something new or different because every purchase is a gamble and they want to play it safe.

First is capacitive 30g switches with side printing. Has MX stems with topre outer for use with either keycap.

Second is full form factor modular that uses plate mounted switches of any manufacturer and can be ordered with or without cherry stem keycaps. Also doesn't have labels on the modifier LED's. Mechanicalkeyboards.com sells switches in packs of ten, but the gaterons from glorious are actually pretty damn competitively priced at 30 USD for 120 of them.

I bought one of the black 108 capacitive boards and a set of g20 blank black keycaps from pimpmykeyboard. Keyboard is arriving tomorrow, not long on the keycaps either.

New abortion from Masshit. Shitty height, shitty cap shape, shitty colors, awful pricing scheme... and it ships at the end of October.

What's interesting is that they didn't even send an email blast about it.

whats wrong with white and beige. That's about as standard as you'd get, unless you want those good awful cotton candy colors. Also is this the first time you've heard of massdrop, cause that pricing scheme and ship date is how every custom keycap set drops

Just about 50% of keyboards made are made in those colors. It's fucking boring.

You can buy a WHOLE brand-new keyboard (with nicer caps mind you) for the price they're charging for. Ridiculous.

And when's the last time you wanted to type of a typewriter keyboard? Never.

FUcking hipsters man...

So you really are new to this. You haven't seen some of the SP sets that sell close to $200 for some shitty double shot ABS.
This set is actually reasonably priced compared to the others, and while high profile isn't right for me, this is one of the cheaper ones. Even the chink max key ones sell at the $100 price point

>>
>>59938935
dye-sub is the most expensive form of printing as it involves burning the dye into the keycap becoming a permanent part of it. That means that the dye must be a darker color then the plastic it is being burned into, which is why a lot of these sets are beige. The advantage this gives is that the durability is unmatched, but it has its limitations. The new profile also means that its gonna cost more then OEM since custom molds aren't cheap.
Side note your keycaps are ugly. Why do people buy that hideous memeami shit.

>>
>>59939915
In this context you see double-shotting being used specifically to create more durable legends than other methods. The way you put it, you make it seem like the legends are a mere secondary bonus.
>>
>>59940119
They create the key cap with two different plastics therefore it's a method of creating a keycap. It's not like they create a perfect keycap and add a legend to it. The legend itself is part of the keycap.
>>
>>59940142
>It's not like they create a perfect keycap and add a legend to it. The legend itself is part of the keycap.
And? What does it matter? Why make the distinction between methods that transfer a legend to a moulded keycap and double-shot?
>>
>>59940201
not him, but injecting and printing are two different things
>>
>>59940257
I understand the process is different, obviously. I'm asking why it matters. The original statement is that it's "the most expensive form of printing", and so I'm trying to figure out why there is an exclusion of the arguably better process.
>>
>>59940298
In both methods the legends are permanent and won't wear off. Dye-sub is much more prone to errors and requires more expensive machinery. I really don't see what exclusion you guys are talking about.
>>
>>59940044
>You clearly are new to this.

Maybe i'll just use my older logitech keycaps I have for mx red switches. They show no wear and are comfy to type with.
>>
>>59940574
Ignore that retard. He did post some garbage colored keycaps, but it doesn't mean that all of them are. That just looks like some shit coating, similar to some Tai-Hao ones. Look at MechanicalKeyboards and Massdrop if you want good keycaps, and check AliExpress if you want some decent cheap ones. You can get nice colored PBT ones from chinks for like $30.
>>
>>59940201
Because doubleshot is not a legend creation method, it is a KEY CAP creation method that gives a legend as well. Are you retarded? You're not going to create a key cap with the legend missing because the key cap would not be complete, the different coloured plastic completes the key cap and fills in the legend. It IS a method of creating a complete cap.
>>
>>59940783
>Because doubleshot is not a legend creation method
Keycap manufacturers make double-shot keycaps specifically because of the legends the process creates. Do you deny this?
>>
>>59940574
>Maybe i'll just use my older logitech keycaps
Pretty sure logitech uses a non standard layout and nonstandard stabilizer placement, You can use some, but not all. Also the Tada68 comes with EnjoyPBT keycaps as standard. Anything else would be a downgrade

It really isn't at all. Have you used a brown switch for any length of time?

Setting clicky aside, there is only a small difference in the feel between blue and brown but not enough to put it in shitter dome or scissor territory. Since blues are accepted, why wouldn't browns be? Sounds like you're memin' m89.

Browns aren't for every purpose I admit, but I don't think you could argue that they are shit, considering they are the second best selling Cherry MX switch type.

I've owned several boards with browns. First one i tought was just bad luck. Inconsistent switches, skratchy and all around unpleasant. >>
>>59941372

>>
>>59942103
Yes the manufacturing process of making a key cap, not a legend. The legend IS part of the keycap therefore doubleshot is a form of keycap creation, not legend creation.
>>
>>59942132
You didn't answer my question.
>>

>>
Yeah, I'm going to wait for different colour schemes in the recreated beamspring profile. Neither of them excite me terribly, and I have round 6 on the way (not that it hasn't been "on the way" for the past two years, mind).
>>
>>59942198
You are extremely childish, too young for this board I reckon.

Whether or not doubleshot was used to make the 'printing' more durable is entirely irrelevant. The act of doubleshotting is a process in the creation of the keycap NOT a process of legend creation like Dye Sub or Laser etching is.

For them keycaps the keys are made blank then the legends are put on. in Doubleshot the legends ARE the keycap therefore doubleshotting is a method of keycap creation and NOT legend creation because it is part of the key itself.
>>
>>59942228
You've repeated this quite a number of times, and at this point I understand what you're saying. It's just a misinformed perspective is all.
>>
>>59942250
What I'm saying is entirely correct...Doubleshotting dates back to the 70's where I seriously doubt they expected people to use them keys for a life time. They've just always been higher quality and the tooling is much less advanced than dye sub

Are you thinking just the cluster of five, or the two large ones?

There are also three or so pairs that are underneath the controller here, that also look a little dirty. Are those worth re-soldering as well?
