0. re-consider your life if you use i368 ubuntu in year of the lord, 2017
1. open https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium/releases
2. search for the section for ubuntu binaries
3. download the .deb packages.
4. install the deb packages with dpkg:
dpkg -i file1.deb

You can supply more than one .deb files or you can put all the files in one directory and inside run
dpkg -i *.deb

5. run
apt-get install -f
to install any necessary dependencies
6. chromium is now should be in your.... "start menu" or whatever it is called in kde
>>
>>59858659
Check out the github page.

There are prebuilt packages here:
https://ungoogled-software.github.io/ungoogled-chromium-binaries/

Compilation instructions here:
https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium#getting-the-source-code

Since you're on Ubuntu you can also use a PPA or deb file. Try searching for them.

Installed Xubuntu 16.04 64bit on a ThinkPad X230 (Intel HD Graphics 4000) and I just stumbled upon a problem where the screen seems to glitch when playing video or scrolling on Firefox.

Just activated the proprietary graphics drivers on the Additional Drivers program/tool but the problem seems to persist. Didn't have this problem when I tested vanilla Ubuntu 16.04 a while ago.

Can anyone give me a heads up on what I should do to fix this? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Why does almost every single linux distro have screen tearing when multiple open windows overlap? For example, having a video player or a windowed game open in front, and a file manager or a web browser window either fully or partially behind will cause screen tearing in the part where the 2 (or more) windows overlap.

Fresh Debian+Xfce install on a laptop, not much more experience with Linux than just knowing a tiny bit of the terminology and some basic core stuff(cron, screen, ssh, etc). My main computer is a well running Win7 install that I'm familiar with hotkeys on, have a workflow, have fixed any little flaws on(thumbnails for webms, etc), and play games on. Where do I start on making this work for me? I've heard Xfce is terrible for screen tearing, so that needs fixing, I need to get the latest Firefox and my add-ons(ESR is preinstalled), I want to remove some of the bloat that was preinstalled, gotta get the usual laptop bits setup(what to do on screen close, show battery percentage and how long I have left, if it should behave differently on battery vs plugged in), Steam, gotta either learn what the hotkeys are, or configure them to match my old ones, gotta get the layout right on my DE(taskbar on the side, system tray on the bottom, quick launch and start button on top), probably some other stuff. Can you guys point me in the right direction on anything and I can go from there?

If any of the configure options are pointing to out of home (like /usr /usr/local) you need to add sude to make install and 99% of the time you need to. Some devs use scripts to do everything or you can even get away with
./configure && make && make install
also. Personally I like to do it one step at a time. It really doesn't matter though.

Isn't Ubuntu (and most distros) supposed to auto mount so you can just go into the file manager and click the drive? If that doesn't work it's corrupt. I don't think getting the data is likely. You might be able to format and write a new filesystem though. Google 'linux repair usb drive" or something.

Hi,
For the last decade or so, I used Arch almost exclusively. Last month I decided to take a look at Manjaro. Now I don't think I will ever return to Arch. I spent some time to check all the packages installed and configurations made, but I am now quite comfortable.
As a long time Arch user, I can safely say that even if some people claim the opposite, Arch does break from time to time. Delaying the packages and checking the problems before pushing them really gives you a sense of safety that simply wasn't there before.

Hi, I just got my hands on an acer swift 3. Installed ubuntu on it, but I cannot get grub to show up. Only way I can run GNU/Linux on it now is from my a USB, but I only have a 2GB drive so no persistance. Any ideas how I can fix this? Currently Ive got windows 10 installed on it, but I have no interest in windows so I wouldnt mind removing it, however I kinda still want it because if nothing else I can run GNU plus linux on a VM on it.

Any tips? My usual laptop is being repaired, so thats why Im stuck on this current one btw

That actually isn't bash; it's stardard shell scripting (and works with #!/bin/sh). With bash you have more features like regex so a script can look like this:

$ foo() { if [[ "$1" =~ a|b ]]; then echo win; else echo fail; fi; }; foo a
win
$ foo() { if [[ "$1" =~ a|b ]]; then echo win; else echo fail; fi; }; foo b
win

fail

Is it possible to encrypt /boot?

I've been reading on so-called full disk encryption, but it seems trivial to me to replace the bootloader with something that would e.g. sniff my keys when I enter them.

Is there a good way to defend against this kind of attack? I've heard about putting your boot, and only that, on a USB stick you would always carry with you, but that's really inconvenient. Is there a way that doesn't require that?

What distro are you using?

If you are using arch check out mkinitcpio-chkcryptoboot

Otherwise chkboot.

You can hash the boot partition and see if it has changed between reboots.

If either of these fail then you know your machine is owned and should wipe.

>>
>>59863429
Well yeah they can always modify the hardware (and e.g. install a keylogger), but in terms of software, there's no fundamental reason why you couldn't have a system which is practically and theoretically impossible to access without entering the correct passcode(s).

Off the top of my head: use a persistent storage module (so no power required - i.e. no "pop out CMOS battery" trick) on the mobo to store a BIOS password hash. BIOS decrypts GRUB (asking for a passkey, probably), checks it hasn't been tampered with, then loads that, and without entering the correct BIOS password you can't deviate from that (to e.g. boot from a different device). Without entering a Grub password, again the only thing you can do is boot into your distro - which requires entering a password to decrypt the bootloader.

With such a system, the owner can boot the OS easily by entering the correct password(s), and if they want to configure BIOS or boot from a different device (such as a USB stick) that is also just one password away. But an attacker with no knowledge of these passwords cannot use a pure-software attack to manipulate the system in any way, as far as I can see.

To attack that one would need to go the route of replacing the mobo with a malicious one, or replacing the persistent BIOS password hash storage (which might be harder than replacing the mobo), or just installing a keylogger in the keyboard.

The reason why one might realistically want to secure against software attacks but not hardware attacks is because your roommate can literally take 5 minutes and a $5 USB stick to execute an evil maid attack or something while you're taking a dump, but it's much harder to disassemble a laptop, seamlessly install malicious hardware, and put it back together during the 3 minutes until you get out of the toilet. Add some anti-tamper tape and now your laptop looks absolutely atrocious and any tamper job is that much more time to execute covertly.
>>
>>59863619
Or he could place a hidden camera to record you typing the password.
>>
>>59863511
That's actually fantastic, thanks anon.

To add onto >>59863619, if you spot hardware tampering, you will probably never even boot the machine; instead you'll do your best to restore it, most likely finding and removing any keyloggers and stuff, or even just sticking the hard drive in a different machine.

On the other hand, while one may be able to detect software attacks like the anon above suggested, these tools need to be run AFTER boot. Meaning whatever malicious bootloader/BIOS/whatever was loaded, could have sniffed your passwords, but also possibly tampered with your system after it was unlocked, meaning that now your entire system - including your data and the entire OS - can be considered compromised. Woops.

What distro? This is for Arch but you should be able to read between the lines and apply it to something else.

-Creating an Infinality-like font configuration for Arch-

From a clean slate on Arch we can now create a similar font configuration to the infinality-bundle's without having to use the patched packages. It is now possible to easily get great-looking results with the default interpreter.

1. Create the following symlinks to instruct freetype2 to use good-looking rendering defaults
sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/11-lcdfilter-default.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d

sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d

2. Modify (or create)
/etc/fonts/local.conf
to contain these contents: https://pastebin.com/rnDtdzt5

3. At this point your fonts should look pretty good and you may wish to stop here but you can improve them more by making sure that we have all fonts on the system that were defined as substitutions earlier. To do this install the packages
fonts-meta-extended-lt
and
fonts-meta-base
from the AUR which will build the rest of the fonts required.

After having done all this, restarting the X-server by logging out and back in should apply all changes.

To elaborate, yes I am aware of attacks such as van eck phreaking and other means of extracting information. I'm not aware of an easy way to perform these attacks, however. Anything like that also requires special equipment, preparation, etc.

Meanwhile, literally every basement neet can probably execute a software-based attack on a BIOS or a bootloader. I could spend a couple days researching more if I really wanted to, grab one of my random USB keys, and set out on a grand hacking adventure without every spending a penny or leaving my house (except possibly to reach my target).

So, I've been using i3wm for a week or two now, and I love tiling in concept, but I've found that manually arranging the trees is really tiresome and unintuitive, really.
There's a lot I like about i3wm, like its ability to automatically make some windows floating (great for dialogs), but dislike things like those same floating dialogs not being tied to their parent window (by default at least), so they get hidden when I switch to a different window tree. Searching for windows is also a pain, and I'm not a huge fan of dmenu over krunner which I used previously. Also, it doesn't seem to gel well with my media key modifier, and since I can't even seem to make xev register when my media key modifier is pressed, I'm not sure I could configure that properly.

Xmonad seems to address my main gripe, the searching for windows and such, but is it actually good at doing that or is it just an ad blurb? I haven't gotten into ricing yet, but I probably will at some point, so can Xmonad look good? (minor point, really)
Really, my main concern with Xmonad is that I'm not a programmer, and I don't know Haskell. i3 is really, really easy to configure, but learning Haskell would be daunting when I'm already looking at learning Emacs Lisp for Emacs and Python for data analysis and physics-math stuff

I'm thinking of looking into bspwm, but at this point I'm not even sure what I'd really like. If it helps, I'm a pleb who loves spacemacs for helm, avy, and ace, and would like something similar for a wm (though I'm not quite autistic enough to use exwm)

I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about with the dialogues. Do you not have something like:
>for_window [window_role="pop-up"] floating enable
in your i3 config?

Also for the media keys you can definitely get them to work. You just use "bindcode" in the i3 config but I forgot how to figure out which values to use (my volume keys are 121, 122, and 123 if that helps)
but it's also possible to use "bindsym" and see if they work with things like
XF86AudioRaiseVolume, XF86AudioLowerVolume, and XF86AudioMute
>>
>>59864656
I do not have that line in my config. Oddly enough, certain floating windows work fine, others don't (DownThemAll for Firefox for instance does not, though I know I could just set it manually)

The real issue with floating windows for me, however, is that when e.g. Firefox opens a floating window, and I switch to a different window on the same screen, the floating window remains in front of the new window, rather than staying with its parent window, which is odd to me. If I wanted to keep them separate, I'd do so manually.
I'm not sure what I'd write in config to make this possible, unlike the issue of making specific windows always be floating

As for the media keys, yeah I could probably fix it. I should probably not have mentioned it, since it does seem possible to change the keycode values or whatever

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

How does AMD hate freedom? Sure there's the hardware botnet, but Intel already has it (plus the CIA probably mandates it). Nvidia cards with nouveau are basically unusable for anything beyond rendering a desktop. At least amdgpu and radeon are usable with some cards. I'll wait though, thanks.

Ironically enough, if you really care about freedom you should buy old NVIDIA GPUs. AMD does not have free driver firmware for any GPU.

>How does AMD hate freedom?
>Sure there's the hardware botnet,
You answered yourself anon.

openradeon drivers were and are developed by a community of users not by AMD and they exist because the proprietary catalyst drivers always sucked fucking dick.

amdgpupro drivers are not fully "free" because in order to enable all the features of the videocard (like fucking 3d acceleration) you will still be forced to use a proprietary extension to the "free and open" base drivers.
So it's AMD figuring out how to jew you into installing their proprietary shitware and not make it break with every update like the drivers they provided for the last decade or so.

There were rumours that AMD might allow for disabling for their botnet management engine (PSP or whatever it was called) in their newest cpus/chipsets. Just shills talking out of their ass.

And while the community of desktop Linux users has nothing to lose from AMD's attempts warm up to linux and make their support for better, to call them "freedom loving" is a massive stretch.

Let's be honest, properly working, well performing proprietary drivers are better than no drivers at all.
And the direction AMD went (a base driver that allows you to install the system and add proprietary extensions) is superior to installing proprietary nvidia drivers on a janky-at-best noveau drivers.

That's wrong. There's a difference between ineptitude and unwillingness to do so.

Miniatures in the filepicker is a feature that only a very limited amount of people need.
Tell me, who else other than a drooling imageboard user with billions of anime and reddit frog pictured with cryptic names dumped into a single directory would need such a feature?

I doubt even someone working in the photography business (as if someone doing professional photo work would use linux lol) would recongise this as an absolute must-have

normies using facebook to upload photos. and facebook users are millions
>>
>>59865665
>and facebook users are millions
And 99% of them upload pictures from their phones

Plus, the already existing preview of images in the filepicker is absolutely sufficient to upload 2-3 photos everyday.
You know when you took the picture you want to upload and it's incredibly easy to narrow the pool of images in a single directory if you have timestamps in the filenames.

We must recognise that companies developing non-free software that works with GNU/Linux are not contributing to the system or to our community. Instead, they are trying to distract people and lead them away from freedom. Their 'investment' is like building a factory designed to pollute the air. It does harm, not good, to our community.

Why the fuck are you guys talking about property ownership as if it has anything at all to do with free software?

It's like this guy said >>59866186 it's natural law.

Software ownership is not natural because despite how hard everyone wants to push software as a physical entity it is literally nothing more than INFORMATION. It's not a physical product.
Software ownership falls more under that family of things as "owning an idea", "owning a song", "owning a word".

On the other hand, owning physical objects and land are in an entirely different ballpark.
