IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

If you're going to be using it at a desk most of the time, get a W series or T5xx with a nice screen.

For high mobility get an X230 or X230T.

Anyone know if the T430s heatsink is the same as a T420s? With Nvidia.
>>

Looks different. Looks like the T430s has two heatpipes for the GPU and the T420s has one.

I'm not into any graphics work, hence don't need anything super fancy. I own an E6410 with 1280 x 800, and this screen sure doesn't make me want to kill myself. However, I'm not entirely happy with this machine for some non-display related reasons, might as well sell it and buy a T410 or something instead. As long as the screen in that something is not worse than my E6410's, I'm good.

I wonder if you could hack your way into less battery consumption? Which btw efficiency is not the first thing I think about when I read the words "chinese backlight".

Clarification: Do not mean it in a derrogotary way, simply put, any alternatively engineered product designed to replace another, probably has no efficiency in mind, and the usage of word chinese I know everything is made in China, you know god damn well what I meant.
>>
Just got a used X220 and the battery is hot garbage. What battery can I get that will last me 6-8 hours (web browsing, light indie gaming on Debian) that won't rape my wallet?
>>
>>59090268
$79 original 9 cell from newegg.

On the other hand, since you got a used shitty battery, why don't you test a theory out we all have about putting in brand new 2500mah cells in your battery and report back results.

What's the point of the number lock (fn + NmLk1) on the X220 standard keyboard? All it appears to do is lock specials keys to the special key listed, but all those keys (e.g. 1/2/3 for j/k/l, or dash for semicolon) appear to exist on the keyboard already either directly or by shift-toggle. I don't get it.
>>
>>59090268
You'lll definitely need a 9 cell.
>>
>>59090359
Yes, it looks different. It has a seperate heat spreader for the dGPU. If you buy one with dGPU be prepared to put on new thermal paste. Even if it's refurbished. Replacing the thermal paste is usually not part of the process.

The condition is probably mediocre. X230t usually go for around $200 with those specs.

ebay won't take your money. If you buy via ebay you transfer the money directly to the seller so you should rather worry about shady sellers. That one's got good ratings though.

Its parted magic, latest version, Idk kernel, battery in Loonix is pretty shitty but I don't optimise it, that is live USB.

eBay sometimes have fully specced x220s but they're not exactly cheap about it.

At times it's better to just grab the thing for very cheap and buy the other parts separately (unless you have a lot of trouble with replacing parts yourself). Maybe go for an i7 x220 as those have usb 3.0 support.

I bought myself an x220 with 8GB of RAM and an SSD, maybe I'll grab the IPS display later. I think you can even replace the processor later if you want in certain models.

What would be the best Thinkpad for me to throw in my bag for commuting and the like? Thinking x220 or x230. How much should I pay in the UK for one?
>>
>>59096758
If you're considering X series, get an X230. Its performance is way better, especially in terms of graphics while battery life is pretty much the same. I think they go for around £150 - £200 in the UK. The most common spec configuration is i5 2,6GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD. Make sure to get an SSD and possibly a RAM upgrade to 8GB. If you can get one with an IPS panel.

So, I can get an X240 or L440 for the roughly same price and specs, except X240 has a 1TB HDD, and L440 has 128GB SSD. What should I get?
>>
>>59097647
Don't get an L series. If you're buying used and both are the same price there's no need to buy the inferior product. Inferior in terms of build quality, if you're wondering. The HDD on the X240 is a downside but an SSD is not that expensive and you can still use the HDD for backups once you have replaced it.

Until a few months ago my mom was still using a T40 with the 1.5 GHz processor, maxed out at 2 gigs of RAM. The thing dates from 2003, it was more than 13 years old by the time we retired it. She used to connect it in to the router directly because the internal wireless only does 802.11 a/b. The hard drive was the original 40 GB IDE with a ridiculous number of power-on hours (around 50,000). Amazingly, it ran Windows 7, albeit slowly and with no Aero. The 1024x768 resolution was the most painful part. In December I gave her my T400, which was getting a bit long in tooth for me but was a massive upgrade for her.

>>
>>59097647
>>59097789
Yeah, the only way I would consider an L series is if it were

a) Substantially cheaper than the equivalent T/X series
b) Given to me for free

My old company had a fleet of L440s and they sucked pretty bad. Although, given how bastardized the T series has become, it does not make as much of a difference as it used to.
>>
>>59098284
Meh. Personally I think the worst time for the T and X series was around the T/X 440/240. They have gotten considerably better in the last few years. Build quality is pretty good now but of course the features that defined a Thinkpad are still missing. For example clamshell lid, locking lid, super stiff hinges. At least they got the color right this year.
>>
>>59096099
Sandy and ivy bridge i7s are actual quad cores. It's not worth buying a horrible old heavy hot laptop with a 1/10 screen unless you're going to use it as a mobile desktop replacement aka a quad core i7 would be necessary to make that possible

DESU the W700 sounds so good. It looks good and has the classic keyboard, whilst also having the slide out display and the graphic tablet as bonuses. The reviews were pretty much perfect. Only thing is it's from 2008, but then again I still use my '08 desktop daily and it still works great.

>>
>>59098501
This is sort of the sentiment I have. I've got a T560 at work, overall the build quality is better than anything in the consumer world, the TrackPoint buttons are back, aside from the function keys the keyboard is pleasant to use, the hinges are reasonably stiff and the screen does not bounce while typing (unlike my brother's Y510p). I can definitely live with it, and I would not despair if this were the future. But some of the old features I liked are not here anymore, and compared to my W520 the screen's colour reproduction is horrible (the background colour I have is supposed to be a Windows 2000-ish cyan, but appears like the Windows 95 turquoise). Actually the screen is sort of shitty overall despite being 1080p. It's like Lenovo's perennial weak spot and they don't seem to give a fuck.

7, 8, and 9 of the numpad are on the number row, meaning your right hand is already on half the row regardless. Then with the left hand you have access to 1-5. There's no point in using the numpad, since all keys are well within normal reach without it.

x230 is better if you need USB 3.0 and also has slightly better integrated graphics (most people getting a thinkpad dont care about that) OR if you like the new keyboard type (I personally don't but still got a x230 because of usb 3.0 and desu got used to the keyboard, it's way better than I thought it would be)

I know you can mod old keyboard types into new models (also have to use a bios update I think?) but not sure of the other way around.

If you buy from a really good seller who is selling official Lenovo batteries, there is a good chance you'll get a good one. That's not exactly true, anon. An i7 ending with a -QM suffix is a true quadcore with hyperthreading. Any model that only has a -M suffix is the same hyperthreaded dualcore as a mobile i3 or i5, just with higher clock speed and more cache. In the specific case of the X220, you also get a native USB 3.0 port on i7 models while i5 models only have USB 2.0.

? If it's the 620M, it's an i7 not i5, the highest CPU option the T410 had. It might imply it also has Nvidia discrete GPU, but don't quote me on this.

If these two are your only options to choose from, in case the T410 actually has the i7 and discrete graphics AND the 900 x 1440 screen and the price is somewhat negotiable, I'd be tempted to buy it. If it has none of that, I'd certainly go for the T430. Even though I'm a huge fan of the 16:10 ratio and non-chiclet keyboard, 800 x 1280 doesn't make all that much sense, yet an SSD, a 2 generations newer CPU, an SSD and a dock are nice goodies to have. And the battery may well be in better shape, too.

The Core 2 Quad is a setback in performance, granted it is very good, but the price of a W700 cannot be justified when a T430 i5 can outperform it

Hello, i'm having some problem with my t400:
* the cpu is really noisy (especially when the computer is not doing anything. it gets silent only when the pc is doing some operation. i usually make it compress big file on 7zip to shut it up.)
* the display have many problems: darkens from time to time, becomes purple/pink, etc. i think it has to do with the position. the problem disappears if i press the back of the laptop with my hands.
* the AC port(?) has become loose
also some screws have come out of the laptop (and i lost them.)
