IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have both, I say no

the T430 feels more comfortable to me personally, especially if you're using it as your main PC. The iGPU in ivy bridge is also much better than sandy bridge.

Thing is, x220 has portability that just can't be beat, and if you're using it for school, I say keep it. I actually bought my x220 for that reason there.

I use my t430 has a desktop though. Pic related, just took this for you :^)

I got a x220T(i5, now with 16gb ram) a few months ago just because got it for cheap ($100usd) but I hardly use the tablet features, should I try and sell it to buy a x220? or x230?

Also, what's the best O.S. for the x220T? I can't get more than 2h in linux even with TLP while in Windows I got at least 4h but I don't know if I'm just doing something wrong.

Thanks anon. You are actually making me want to have one more.
After getting my first thinkpad, seeing other have ones really makes me want to have another one. I can't explain why...
Anyway, I'd really like to have one to leave in my room (carry occasionally) so I could play some old games I can't play on my x220.
>>
>>59052194
If you're looking to have one to act as a desktop or just stay solely in your room, then I say go for it

I was initially using the T430 for everything and loved it, but it was a pain in the ass to have to be plugging everything in and out all the time when I wanted to move around, then go back to my desk

It is more efficient to do just what you described in my opinion, and what I love about these machines is that they are so cheap now that it isn't impractical to have more than one

I even sold my desktop when I bought my first thinkpad (t430), I wish I had known about business laptops years ago, it would have saved me from buying consumer-tier computers

If you're going to get anything, get a W520/W530. Worth having just for the screen. I have one that pretty much just sits on a desk all the time and love it. Great to have what is basically a portable desktop, and I still have my X200 as a travel computer. I would say the T4xx does not have enough of a feature upgrade to be worth owning if you already have an X series.

Sure you COULD just get a docking station for the X series and buy a nice external monitor, keyboard and mouse, but by the time you do all that, you are getting close to the price of some lower end W series configurations.

>>
>>59054158
I believe the screens in the W510 and W520 are actually 95% of sRGB, and a much smaller percentage of Adobe RGB obviously. And while the larger T series sometimes got this panel, it would also sometimes have other panels that were worse. Not to mention a W series will easily run $100 more than a T420. All that aside I agree with your sentiment, the screens on the 14" T series have been completely intolerable from the T420 onwards. The old 16:10 ones were a bit better.

>act as a desktop
Your average T430 won't act as a desktop. You're much better off getting a W530 if you want a somewhat-portable """desktop replacement.""" The 170W power adaptor is cumbersome compared to smaller adaptors. There are mods you can do to trick the W530 into accepting other chargers, but it's easier to just make a little bit of room in your bag.

A near-top spec W530 can be had for the price of 2 decent T430s, and is worth it in almost every way imaginable. Get the FHD.

The T440 with trackpoint buttons makes much more sense, the T430 was the Chevy Cavalier of it's generation. The goal was to bring attractive pricing to enterprise buyers. The W530 was a "professional" machine, and had options that should have been afforded to the "bread and butter" T430.

T430s are cheap, and they are built well. But they are utility laptops in every sense but actually using them. You will desire a better display for uses other than spreadsheets. You can swap certain displays, which may or may not suit your technical ambitions.

Go for the X230 though. There is no reason not to. Even with the 7 row keyboard, there is no one 7-row keyboard. For the X220 there are 3 FRUs:
45N2071 - Alps
45N2141 - Chicony
45N2211 - NMB

The X220 was not a high point for typing quality anyhow. If you are that convinced that you personally need a 7-row, you can swap one and deal with two or so function keys not working. Why would you want to though? The backlit keyboard will be appreciated by 99% of users. The numbers on mine are 0C02034/04X1353, personally my favorite chiclet keyboard. Compared to 7-row keyboards of Thinkpads past, you aren't getting a great keyboard on the X220 anyhow.

Also, the X230 took care of IPS burn-in issues, the tablet model hinges are stronger, and you get better battery life.

Whereas both are widely available, you would have to have a specific reason to actively choose the X220 over the X230.

>>59054392
No reason not to go W530.

So guys, right now i'm using a T530 with the dGPU, and i'm looking for a lighter replacement. i mostly just run google chrome (i know meme browser) but i'm a highschool student and are looking for something that's lightweight well still being a thinkpad. I'm thinking of getting the new Thinkpad 13 Chromebook then just upgrading the storage, ram, then putting something like Ubuntu on it. i'm also thinking the X230 but buying the unit alone would almost bankrupt me, and i really want something that will last all day. hey /tpg/
right now I have an asus laptop, with a sandy bridge i5, 4gb of ram and a 500gb spinny, 15".
I don't really use it because the battery is starting to die and it's a bit cumbersome to carry around to university. I was thinking if it was worth it to replace it with maybe an x series, likely an x230, save up and go for something new, of just suffer with my current one. I'm starting my master in CE in september if it all goes well, so it would be in use for at least 2,5 years. Used thinkpads (and computers in general) here are pretty overpriced, with most x230's i can find going for around 275-325€. I could order from ebay uk, but i'd have to deal with postage

I've got the yoga 14 with the dedicated Nvidia GPU and intel GPU so you can switch back and forth if you need the lower power consumption of the intel GPU. It's pretty sweet and the IPS display is awesome. Also all the hardware works perfect on a vanilla install of Ubuntu. Even the digitizer works.
>>
>>59059972
>Sorry didn't explain myself. I'm concerned about whether the processor actually slows down over time?

no

I've read that deterioration of the thermal paste can cause this?

kind of, it will make it run hotter which will make it more likely to thermal throttle, which is reducing the performance until it cools down to safe temps
>>
>>59059260
Those are almost double the price, even on ebay.
>>
>>59060297
Go on amazon. They stock a few of the older models. The thing I don't like is if you get one that's too old it won't have the physical buttons for trackpoint and may not have the built in digitizer. If you don't care about that then no big deal.

Here's the cheapest one I found: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00OZC18MS/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

A W540 naturally. They even get a 3K screen option if you want to go beyond FHD. They're a big step-up in price over the W530 from what I've seen.

Better hw, best support for w10. I can't move there the wifi card from what I understand (I have unlocked the bios and upgraded the one on the x220), but that's the minor issue, ram and msata ssd + ssd are more important.

Just to let you know, I used to be a keyboard traditionalist since the Precision Keyboard was first introduced.
Without having ever tried one, of course. Yesterday I got a T430 and I'm just so regretful. The keyboard is
great. I know there are some faults in the layout but it's not nearly as bad as people want to make it look like.
In fact, the whole thing feels a lot stirdier than previous Lenovo keyboards. Concerning flex it's almost as good
as IBM keyboards. The backlight is a welcome addition too. It looks nice too, though I admit, I miss the blue
elements. Also the lack of dedicated volume buttons is a major throwback on anything newer than x30 series.
But still, it's one of the best, if not the best keyboard currently available on laptops.

I have the i5 version. The digitizer developed deadzones 4 separate times (3 of which I had replaced under warranty, 1 developed after the warranty expired), the backspace key popped off during the keycap-retraction process once and snapped one of the holding tabs off, so it wobbles whenever you use it, and it gets uncomfortably hot with any significant workload. person who was requesting info on the S1 yoga here, I'd decline that one and ones alike due to the lack of digitizer. standalone graphics tablets aren't as nice to draw with compared to a digitized display, integrated digitizer makes things a lot easier, and a tablet adds some bulk to carrying it around.

I need to do something about my T420s overheating.

It's the i7 and has Nvidia graphics (which is disabled). I know, the i7 is a house fire waiting to happen. It was my mistake, and I regret it. But it's what I have to work with now.

I have torn the laptop down and reapplied the thermal paste (with MX-4). I did the FHD mod, which exacerbated the overheating problem.

Is it possible that the heatsink currently in the laptop is defective? Like the fluid in the heat pipe(s) evaporated out a pinhole leak? Would the heatsink mostly function until heavy CPU utilization? Because that's what it seems like is happening. Even before the FHD mod, when I did a system upgrade (using Fedora), the temps would hit Tmax and throttle when it was actually updating the packages. The temps would get into the 70s and 80s when just watching videos. Now, with the high res screen, temps hit Tmax when watching videos, and the CPU throttles itself to the point that things get choppy.

I think I want to get a new heatsink. How many versions are there that are compatible with the Nvidia based system? Will the T430s (or even 440s) heatsink work? Are they better designs?

I just want better heat transfer and dissipation. Please help. I like this laptop a lot, and want to keep it.

So I just scored a T430s for cheap on ebay. Have not arrived yet but I'm pretty exited (coming from a E6430s with shitty screen, awefull keyboard and battery bulge).

I plan to replace the keyboard and after finding out you can swap the 20 series keyboard (with some bios modding) I was told it is essentially a "circle-jerk mod for people with 20 years of muscle memory and detatchement issues". Is the keyboard really better in any way ? I need to change it regardless because it isn't the right layout.

Also, what keyboard manufacturer is the best ? I have access to those 2:
04W3138 - CS12 B/L KBD CFA SRX
04W3064 - CS12 B/L KBD CFA CHY

Lastly, can I stull use secureboot (and full disk encription) if I mod the Bios ? I want to remove wifi whitelist and I ordered nescesary hardware (programmer and clip).

>>
>>59057305
Good enough. 1366x768 is usable but not great, but it's standard for X220(T).
You can get an IPS screen for your X220 which is a much needed improvement. X220T has IPS by default but because of the touch function there's another layer of something going on that makes it a bit less impressive than a really good IPS.
T models have digitizers for drawing. I dunno about later ones, but the X220T has an ugly protruding battery, which is the major downside to it versus the X220.
Couldn't tell you about Osu since I'm on Linux, but it may be Wine compatible.

>>59059212
I have a thinkpad yoga 12, I very much enjoy it. I got a new pen for it, the one it came with was rather dinky and hurt my hand to use. The digitizer can be a bit inaccurate, you'll have to recalibrate it often, but once you're comfortable, it's a real joy to use. Some programs are hard to use with touch screen and pen though. If you're drawing, i say check out medibang. The keyboard is also really nice, been using it for all of my programming courses now a days. It's a little weak, though. It can open programs at an acceptable rate, but you'll occasionally get little hiccups in performance. Don't expect to be playing many games on it, though i'm sure you wouldn't have to worry if you get the yoga 14 and above.

This - Most production software is only available for Windows or Mac and the way sound drivers work in Windows is such a bitch. Windows lets applications take exclusive control of a device which means you can only use it in one recording program at a time. Can be super hit or miss. Just stupidly designed compared to CoreAudio in Mac OS.

>>59071634
No, I bought three different 70++ batteries for my thinkpad x220 and none of them worked properly, I could use them for one cycle and then they wouldn't charge. Newer thinkpads since the x220 only accept legit oem batteries I think. It's worth spending extra to get a proper lenovo one. my story: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/56fi9v/thinkpad_x220_battery_and_modified_bios_woes/?st=iuniz6ka&sh=e0593777

I hackintoshed my x220. Everything works well, just flash a bios without the wlan card whitelist and put in a wlan card that is supported under osx. Trackpad is fine but you want to disable two finger right click, for some reason it's pretty buggy and annoying. I love my hackintosh

Yeah, I just want one gesture with the trackpad, which is three (or four, or even 2 if it can't be achieved, through something like bettertouchtool since I have a license for that) finger desktop switching. I find it just a little less convenient to have to use the keyboard shortcut for that one. I also have a magic trackpad laying around but that seems dumb to carry around
>>
I already encrypted my ssd. Is it a good idea to also set up a bios password for security?

the only gesture that works is three finger swipe for back/forward in safari and it's super awkward because of how small the trackpad is on the x220. just get comfy with the shortcuts.

hey /tpg/

programmer/drawfag here

looking to replace my 8 yearold macbook pro.

I've been looking at used X230Ts, are they any good? I was also looking at brand new yoga flex 15's, but turns out they don't have fucking styluses.

Does lenovo even make anything with a real stylus and digitalizer currently? All i need is that, and a physical keyboard because i must do codemonkey duties.

Would really want to give lenovo a chance.
>Otherwise, I'll just bite the bullet and get a surface pro 4 and a damn keyboard.

You could make a service that runs on boot to run a script.

A very lazy way of sharing information about the state across different scripts would be to dump a value into /tmp/LidOn or something similar. Or even just use the existence of such a file as your indicator. From there you just need to chuck some simple logic into your script.

eSATA is native speed for your drive. Can't get better than that, it's as if it was connected internally.
