>Much of the Open Source community tries to advertise the community as one happy place to the outside. Where contributions are valued only by their technical quality, and everybody meets at conferences for beers.

>Well, it is not like that. It's quite a sick place to be in.

>I don't usually talk about this too much, and hence I figure that people are really not aware of this, but yes, the Open Source community is full of assholes, and I probably more than most others am one of their most favourite targets. I get hate mail for hacking on Open Source. People have started multiple "petitions" on petition web sites, asking me to stop working (google for it). Recently, people started collecting Bitcoins to hire a hitman for me (this really happened!). Just the other day, some idiot posted a "song" on youtube, a creepy work, filled with expletives about me and suggestions of violence. People post websites about boycotting my projects, containing pretty personal attacks. On IRC, people /msg me sometimes, with nasty messages, and references to artwork in 4chan style. And there's more. A lot more.

I'm trying to use steam (not ubuntu). Installed steam, and then steam-native-runtime packages. Most games I've tried work fine. when i try to run binding of isaac (launched steam-native from terminal) It fails to open and I get this:

Game update: AppID 250900 "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth", ProcID 4786, IP 0.0.0.0:0

suggestions? steam overlay is off, and the runtimes presumably shouldnt be a problem because I am using steam-native and its 150 runtime dependencies.

Hey guys I really like how gnome 3.24 is turning out to be but I have a question: if I do a netinstall of debian stable will I be able to install this unfinished version of gnome? or am I going to need to add unstable repos?

Also, after I'm done with this, once gnome 3.24 officially launches how can I switch from the unreleased version to the official one? do I just update the package or should I remove gnome entirely and install it again?

Is there any way to browse through images with space when I open one from thumbnail view?

Is there a way to make the window size appropriate when not in full screen and also scale down the image?
Like when I open a 1900x1080 image on a 1600x900 screen, instead of giving me a 1600x900 window which doesn't even show the full image, can I make it open that image in a 1280x720 window and scale the image to fit window size?

Difficult to explain really, but there are just differences to the way it feels and functions. It's just personal preference.

I never understood it myself until I just started using i3.
Probably the best comparison I've seen someone give is that using a tiling WM is more like you know where everything is, or where everything will go. Each desktop is like its own little "project" and you get into a routing of having things set up a certain way.

I tend to be much less dynamic with my window placement than I ever was with a normal window manager (meaning I don't really move things around at all), but somehow it still feels more efficient.

>I'd actually put some blame on a certain circle of folks that play a major role in kernel development, and first and foremost Linus Torvalds himself. By many he is a considered a role model, but he is quite a bad one. If he posts words like "[specific folks] ...should be retroactively aborted. Who the f*ck does idiotic things like that? How did they not die as babies, considering that they were likely too stupid to find a tit to suck on?" (google for it), then that's certainly bad. But what I find particularly appalling is the fact that he regularly defends this, and advertises this as an efficient way to run a community.

How many init scripts have you personally written to run on systemd or sysv?

Users don't normally touch those, so what difference does it make?
The difference it makes is if you do encounter a problem and need to fine tune something you're fucked with systemd, but with sysv init you at least have a chance to see more transparently what it's doing and/or make changes

Hi all. I'm trying to install an old version of abiword from launchpad.

I've run this in the terminal.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:abiword-stable/ppa
sudo apt-get update

It all seems good at this point as far as I can tell. If I put in 'sudo apt-get install abiword' then it intalls the current version from the repository and not from launchpad. I need to know what to enter next to install it.

inb4: windows does not have this problem. I use windows too and it has problems too. Between linux and windows I can occasionally get something done without too much trouble.

Meme and jokes asides, assuming you have installed and configured everything properly, the problem is probably that those games are picky on the controller driver used.

You know, often game developers can barely program their game on a single system, when they have to make it multiplatform (actually, port it to other platforms) things get really messy.
For example there are some feral interactive games in the steam store that works with the open souce amd driver but not with the proprietary and vice versa (and they doesn't seems to care, I suppose they expects you to switch driver when you switch between said games).

-Debian, one of the most popular on web servers, renowned for its stability.
-Red Hat, developed and supported by one of the biggest open source multinational with a revenue of 2 billions USD, used often in certain industry sectors.
-Probably Fedora, for being pretty popular and sponsored by red hat.

I am missing opensuse, centos, gentoo and many other which I'm not directly listing because I never used them and don't know much about them.

I didn't say they're smart.
To apply, you need to download the PDF, there are smart fields that you need to fill.
These will generate a QR code in the left upper corner, contain the info.
Then you need to print the PDF, and sent it via mail.
I assume the QR code is to be scanned later to convert the data to digital format.

Just research your laptop before you buy. i think broadcom wireless drivers are really shitty but that might have changed since I last checked,

For instance I bought a lenovo 100s, it was perfect. But trying to install linux is a massive pain in the dick. They make it extremely annoying to even boot anything but windows. it's 64 bit hardware but they run 32bit software because there isn't enough RAM onboard. People that did manage to get a distro booted have a whole host of problems with wifi, battery, bluetooth, lid closing, power button etc etc. Makes me sad because the specs design and cost of that laptop were so perfect for what I want.

1.Anon wanted /g/ approved distros.

3. Antergos is really good if you don't mind the arch fags laughing at you. You have everything necessary preinstalled, ready to use in a few minutes.
4. Gentoo, well, I can't really find anything that makes it worth the compile, other than street cred, but for some reasons I keep coming back.
>>
>>58900233
I run Gentoo as my main OS for work and fun for more than a year, I didn't have problems with compilation time. I wrote shell scripts to automate installation process. The stages which consume most of the time for compilation are the installation stage and update stage after long period of time. Updates can go in background.

Gentoo gives great flexibility, I have a custom kernel and customised software which fits my needs. Arch is for pajeets who either want to learn CLI or who want to be like Gentoo users but can't manage their time and time of a computer.

I don't understand it either, all I know is I encountered this dbus solution twice for input related issues.

I was having a very similar issue to that guy and the problem was caused by the mouse. They told me to launch the game (without steam) using that environment variable (although in hindsight it should have worked by launching steam that way too)
Then later my steam controller stopped being detected by steam, and the solution to that was to start steam like that

So this seems to be a fix for a lot of various input related issues with steam and gaming, and that guys problem seems to be very input related, so I would bet this is the answer.

Also, this is really strange to me, after using this solution on steam it fixed my tray icon. I usually had no steam icon in i3bar until I launched steam this way then it started showing up.
dbus is indeed a mystery.

it didn't seem input-related to me
my best guess was that the game was mis-detecting or mis-interpreting something, thinking it was minimized or something
it took me a while to even find that it ran fine as an unfocused window, that's not something i usually do, but i was running out of ideas
there's plenty of people will similar-sounding unusually low fps issues, though all only on windows, the closest i got was that there was some compatibility issue with AMD FX cpus (and i do have an FX cpu, and the last time i played the game, i did not, so it fit perfectly)
i even updated my BIOS as that actually fixed the issue for some people, that's how far this went

Well when I had the issue I thought it was just the game going really really slow on the menu.
Eventually I somehow noticed that if I left it alone without touching anything, without moving my mouse it would fix itself.

So you can try that and see if it's the same issue or not.
Once it started going fast again if I would move my mouse it would slow down. If I just barely nudged my mouse it would slow down for a short period of time and get fast again. If I moved my mouse all over the place then it would take a long time before it would start going fast again.

Maybe your issue isn't caused by the mouse though, maybe it's the gamepad, but it still seems like a similar issue to me.
But whatever.

>Eventually I somehow noticed that if I left it alone without touching anything, without moving my mouse it would fix itself.
actually, that's how i found out it ran ok in a window in the background
i was switching between the game and my browser, researching, the way my windows are arranged, i could see the browser and the gallium hud (stats in the corner) at the same time
one time i had the game in an actual window, not in a wine desktop like i usually run games in, and noticed it was going fast right before switching back to it

i didn't try leaving it alone again, it could well be the same as what you ran into, still, "leaving the game alone makes it werk" is not something i've come across, i've had to unplug my gamepad for a couple other games, but usually it's because they disable keyboard/mouse input because of its presence

ps. while researching i ran into other useful info, like starting the game with "-onethread", which about doubles the performance on my machine

I want to switch to either Debian or Ubuntu, I've got an SSD and a 2tb HDD. I want to keep windows for games and stuff, I'd like to keep music on the 2tb drive and access it from both operating systems. Should I first install the Linux OS and then install windows 8 or should I start with windows and then install windows?

I'd like to do full disk encryption on the Linux partition.
>>
>>58901247
Not the guy with the problem, but I don't think that would work.

I doubt it reopens the file every time it writes to it, so the file would only be created once, then you would be trying to rm a file that's already had its name unlinked, but the filehandle will remain open and continue to fill the disk anyway (until the file is closed, then the space will be freed).

I posted here a few days ago about failing to successfully upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.9. Someone said I should try an older version of Qt5 since it had issues something like that. However I think this is not the case. I have not fully upgraded my system but have the 'plasma' package group in the ignore list (so now I'm on 5.8) and everything works absolutely fine.

The issue I'm having is that on 5.9, the entire screen is just black except for the programs I let run on startup (keepassx-reboot, kwallet and some more). The thing is, all the windows seem to be missing the window title portion. Also, when I remove my .config folder from my home dir, Plasma goes into some kind of first-run mode and initializes itself somewhat. However once I log on, the screen is just black again and no windows show up.

I was wondering if someone could help me with this... I have no clue what is going on here.

I encountered a known bug while trying to apt install winehq-devel and/or winehq-staging.
Not 100% sure what the problem is, but winehq had a bug report somewhere, and someone said to use this for the while being:

“Digital Rights Management” (abbreviated “DRM”) refers to technical mechanisms designed to impose restrictions on computer users. The use of the word “rights” in this term is propaganda, designed to lead you unawares into seeing the issue from the viewpoint of the few that impose the restrictions, and ignoring that of the general public on whom these restrictions are imposed.

Good alternatives include “Digital Restrictions Management,” and “digital handcuffs.”

>>
>>58903607
Honestly I would be more open to DRM if it was impossible for there to be any legal implications to "breaking DRM".

Sure they can put whatever they want in their software, and once they transmit the 1's and 0's to me I should be able to do whatever the fuck I want with them including breaking the DRM. That should be my right.

RMS suggests:
>Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”
But nothing of that is catchy enough to replacy "pirating".

On the other hand, people aren't completly retarded and I think most people who use "pirating" use it because it sounds funny, not because they think it's the same as murder and rape.

I have a server with 2 network interfaces, eth0 and eth1.

I would like to use eth1 as a connection that goes through a pptp vpn tunnel, and eth0 needs to be available to accept connections on it's regular wan IP.

Then i would like to configure a torrent client to exclusively use the eth1 interface to tunnel through the pptp vpn.

Thus far i have managed to set up a pptp vpn tunnel, but can't get it to bind to a specified interface, the "pptp --localbind (eth1 ip address here)... etc" does not have the desired effect. Once the tunnel is established and ppp0 comes up it still routes all traffic through eth0

I have some questions about installing Gentoo.

1. How do I clean a disk of all data using parted? The handbook says that using rm<n> will remove all partitions, but will it also clear all the data? I just want a dataless hard drive, with absolutely nothing on it. an -rm rf kinda deal.

2. Using GPT to boot. The handbook here https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Disks#Default:_Using_parted_to_partition_the_disk says to make /dev/sda2 a FAT32 FS for UEFI boot. However, making our file systems comes *after* this part of the handbook(creating our partitions), so is this just a warning for the future, on what to do with /dev/sda2 ?

3. Are the default cflags and cxxflags good enough? Found here https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Stage

4. What profile am I supposed to use? Like, for example, I know I want the stable KDE as my DE. So, what's the difference between profile 1, profile 4, and profile 8? For the record those are default/Linux/amd64/13.0, default/Linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde, and default/Linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma.

I thought plasma *was* kde?

5. What do with @world? Do I need to update @world? I heard it takes forever.

6. Are the default USE variables any good? I'm not looking to be uber Nazi about not having GTK on my system, etc.

That is all?
>>
>>58904215
Whoops

That is all.**
>>
>>58904215
1. Depends on what you mean by "dataless". If you just want it so there are no files cluttering things, then deleting the partitions will make all the files disappear. If you actually want to make sure the data is physically gone and can't be recovered, you'll have to overwrite it. Just writing all zeros (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/[your drive here]) is good enough for anything but the NSA, google DBAN if you're that paranoid.

2. I'm too lazy to figure out what you're talking about, but it can't hurt anything to create the filesystems too soon.

3. Depends on what "good enough" is. It will work fine, but you should probably look up what flags are available and what effect they have, such as -march=native, -mtune=native, -O2 vs -O3, etc.

4. It just changes what USE flags are set by default. I don't use KDE so I don't know the difference, but I'd guess 4 is what you want. 1 would still work, but you might have to dick around with the USE flags a bit more to get KDE to work the way you want.

5. @world is a keyword that essentially means "everything that's installed", so when you update it it updates everything you have that's not the latest version. I can take a long time depending on your CPU and how many packages / what you have installed. Usually it's a good idea to be fully up-to-date, but you could do it manually a few at a time, later, if you want.

6. For most things, yeah. If there's anything you know you don't want, just set it in make.conf (i.e. add "-systemd"). If you want it to rebuild everything that has that flag set add -N (aka --newuse) to your emerge options.
>>
>>58904600
>DBAN
Does that fully erase drive controller caches/hybrid drives?
>>
>>58904698
Hmm... not sure. I'd say there's no way to be sure.

If you trust your drive's firmware, you can issue an ATA Secure Erase command, which SHOULD take care of that as well, but only if it's implemented properly, which it wasn't always in the past.
