Post your simple/small/stupid questions here, ONCE and WAIT for a reply. You are NOT entitled to an answer.

Read the sticky before posting, you can often find the answer faster there: >>51971506
Same goes for taking a minute or two and googling your issue first.
DO NOT BUMP YOUR QUESTION! You wont get an answer faster, and some people look for posts without replies.

how to insert a null value into a table value?
I have to insert 2 values into a table, but it might be a null, also the first value cant be duplicate, and cant be null(that mart is fixed on the input level

I was using
INSERT INTO table1 (name, TypeName) SELECT ?,?
WHERE ((SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table1 WHERE name=?) = 0);
but the 2nd value ended up being null

then tried this

INSERT INTO `table1` (name, TypeName) values (blee, null)
Where NOT EXISTS name='stuff for value1'
LIMIT 1

but the where throws error

This takes some weird explaining.

So on this site, if I try to enlarge an image, if the image is in the middle of my screen, it anchors the top of the image, so the image enlarges down on my screen.

BUT, if I scroll down a little bit, and the image is near the top of my screen, the image is anchored at the BOTTOM, so it enlarges up, and I have to scroll all the way back up to view the image. Same thing happens when I click to shrink it again so I constantly lose my place.

This only started happening like a day ago. What is this shit. Does anyone else get this problem? It's fucking annoying.

Is value1s column marked unique in the DB? Then the second insert should work fine without that second where... You can also use ON DUPLICATE KEY to do stuff on matching value1s.

I'm trying to make a game in Unity and I suck fat balls at coding.

I've figured out how to make my camera work, and move my character sprite around in 3D. Then I made the sprite a billboard so that it would always face the camera instead of turning around like it's made of paper.

For some reason, this has made the sprite start to stretch out and look fucked up whenever it moves. That didn't happen before. Does anyone know what I did wrong? And/or how to solve it?

Set it up as a server of some kind?
Maybe it allows you to VPN into your home network when you're out and about.
Maybe it collects your mail from your mail provider and serves it up via IMAP.
Make it a compute node in your render farm using Apple Qmaster.

Hard-drive question
Bout to build a new PC (when parts arrive).
Can I use my existing hard drives in my new build? Or is it better to just install new hard-drives and transfer files from old PC to new via usb?
>>

>suddenly no video output
I can still access the UEFI because it beeps when I do but I'm not getting anything from onboard graphics nor my graphics card. What do I do?
>>
>>58879897
>Can I use my existing hard drives in my new build?
Yes.

>Or is it better to just install new hard-drives
You'll have two working PCs if you do this.
You might also consider an SSD for the os/boot drive on your new PC.

It's just down to money and your use case.
>>
>>58879911
Check the computer boots into the OS by pinging it from your network/accessing whatever services you have enabled.
Check monitor works with a different computer.

I know I'll have to install new drivers but would I remove the old drivers before or after I install them in the new PC? (All new components are different from PC)

>>
>>58879999
You should not have to remove old drivers as your OS should only bother loading a driver when it detects a piece of hardware that needs it.
Just install the new drivers.
>>
>>58880009
Is the monitor hooked up when you power on the computer, or do you try hooking it up after it's already powered on?
I would try taking out your external video card, plugging in your monitor to your integrated, then starting your machine.
This way you can rule out slow start times from the external video card confusing your bios from figuring out where the active display is.
>>
>>58880078
Pulling the graphics card worked, thanks anon. Still don't get how the UEFI settings changed on their own but fuck it, it works now.

I have three drives. Two are good, large SSDs. The third is a shitty old hard drive that's mostly porn. I want to put Windows and some Linux distro on the good drives, and somehow encrypt a Windows installation(for my porn games) on the shitty drive. I know you can do some crazy efficient stuff with virtualization now, is it possible to mouse between them(with full screen stuff not fucking it up), or do I need to go the KVM switch route? And what's the overhead like? My only knowledge of this kinda stuff is from Linus' 8 gamers one CPU video. Would I need a video card for each instance, or can they share one? As for encrypting the shitty drive, what are my options? If I can make it not show up on boot without knowing it's there, even better, but it's a "Hope for the best, plan for the worst" situation in case anyone gets nosy or I accidentally somehow give it a drive letter and open the wrong folder on a livestream or something.

>>58879999
Can you or should you? You could, sure. You shouldn't. A new motherboard is the time for a new installation, doing otherwise is just asking for trouble. You'll probably miss some driver that conflicts, and even if you get all the drivers, there are so many random spots you'd never think to check that configure stuff based on the hardware that was in place when they were installed.

Buy whichever is compatible and then go into the UEFI to choose the clockspeed you want to run it at. Or use the XMP if your motherboard has an XMP bios setting it should configure the voltage and timings correctly for your CPU clockspeed
>>
>>58880141
>is it possible to mouse between them(with full screen stuff not fucking it up)
I have Mac OS with a copy of Windows running inside VirtualBox.
I can mouse between them with full screen not screwing things up.
But I've not tried anything fancy, like giving Windows access to my hardware.

>Porn drive.
Do you have a different computer you could put that in?
Then could access it as a password protected share.

You could set-up a linux file-server running in a virtual machine, I guess.
If I had the spare hardware I would go for that for an easy life.

Joining an on-site tech support company. Pays really well, and involves pc/mac/network support and parts ordering/installment. What should I expect?
>>
>>58880255
Just a RasPi, but my friends are all the tech types that would want to know what kinda cool project that Pi was for. An extra drive, no one even notices, and extra installation, eh, they'd ask and then probably accept any excuse. I somehow always fail at network related stuff, and the goal is to sandbox that off from the other drives, so accessing it via the network on my normal installation isn't a great choice. Good idea otherwise, I hadn't considered that.

Found an old IBM Aptiva 2153 for $6 at a thriftshop.

Works. Has had FreeBSD installed (OpenBSD kept giving errors when the CD booted.)

I was planning on using BSD to explore Unix. However, there's no connectivity, at least, not yet - It's still using an old, old modem card, and I'm still getting my feet wet on intermediate POSIX configuration.

Drive is 6gb, with 128 mb of memory. Looks like the harddrive may be on its way out.

Some ideas I've thrown around: explore BSD (current), install FreeDOS, install Windows 95 from disk, install Damn Small and/or Puppy Linux, look for compliant Slackware.

Please advise, I'd love to do something fun and educational with this machine.

I have access to one of those Microsoft Imagine accounts, with Windows licenses all over the place.

I'm using parallels and I decided to dual boot macOS and Windows and use Parallels to access the Windows installation. Since I have 2 different setups (virtualized and real hardware) but Parallel officially supports this feature, how does activation work on both sides?

I'm just asking because I did this a while ago and I had trouble with this in particular.

I'm gonna be upgrading my graphics card in a couple of months. Anything coming out soon I should wait for?

Probably not. But bear in mind that wifi and blutooth compete. So you might reduce the speed/reliability of your wifi connection a bit while the bluetooth is running

>>
>>58881181
It probably depends a lot on the card/dongle. Some mobile devices won't let you enable wifi and bluetooth at the same time. But you'll probably be alright as long as your signal isn't already weak or overcrowded. It'd be a lot like having two wifi devices right next to eachother, if one of them was pumping out a more long range signal than the other

Been using a $400 HP laptop for college until I got the rest of my grant/scholarship money; I just got full $4,000.

Anyways, I can still return the laptop and use that $400 to build a actual RIG so I'm going to do that.

My question is:

I have everything but the actual tower and components. What should my budget be for a 8/10 gaming setup?

I play at 1080p on a 144hz Asus monitor.

Only requirement is:

Silky smooth frame rate, even if I can't play on Super High/Ultra graphic settings.

I'm thinking $1,500 but is that too much to little?

Any advice is appreciated.

We've just switched over from Virgin Media to TalkTalk internet in our house, and as part of the setup circumstances have changed. We're up from 20mbps to 37 now.

The old Virgin modem and my Asus NT66U router were by my PC, so I had an ethernet connection.
The new router has to be set up downstairs instead, so an ethernet connection is out of the question. This router is their "Super Router", a recent model of the Huawei HG633.

Basically my question is this. Should we bother using the HG633 that was supplied, or just hook up my existing NT66U instead?

I will need to get a wireless card for my PC tower regardless as setting up the NT66U as a bridge/repeater/whatever does not seem to be worth it.

So this week I started messing around with creating my own ftp server and after a couple of days I managed to get it up and running but out of nowhere I noticed someone was uploading this Photo.scr file (I didn't give out the server's IP to anyone btw)
I managed to kick the user before it finished but the file stayed there it was about 300 kb big I didn't open it and deleted it immediately and also disabled the ports, firewall rules and the filezilla server.
I am currently running a malware scan to see if anything turns up.
What else should I do?Am I safe?

I may have fucked up. I was pushing my GPU OC with MSI Afterburner, and even though I have the damned thing set to not apply at start up, it's applying at start up. It's a tossup. Your router is probably better built, but theirs comes with AC, so it's probably newer. On the other hand, the AC itself is 5ghz so it probably wont reach very far, and vertical reception is usually the worst for wifi. I'd try them both out as primary routers, see what works best. And just get a wireless dongle for your tower.

>vector png images
eh.

Anyway, you can disable it using
body > img:only-child { background-image: none!important; }
>>
>>58889395
Nah that's a different anon. But to answer those:

I have a 4-fan cooling pad on it, turned to its max setting, and I also keep the system fans running as well. The heatsink issue is a hard one to address because I've never actually tried to crack this thing open before. It's an alienware and I've never had one so I'm not familiar enough with its construction to try. Is my PC clean? Ahh, thats the question. I don't have any indication that it isn't per say. I just have about 8 programs running in the background when my computer is idling on the desktop with nothing open. I open task manager and obviously, nothings running but its all background processes I don't recognize. Pic related though. I think theres multiple issues going on at the same time. My top two candidates after a year of running in circles is now, corrupt BIOS driver and GPU failure. Assuming there aren't viruses.

It has to be one of the two things I haven't tried yet. A virus or a heat sink issue. She's saying she's almost 100% positive its heat sink but I can't address that on my own. I'd have to send it back to her and be without my laptop for god knows how long. She does everything in her own time. It could be months.
>>
>>58889549
Find a service manual and do it. You'll mess up only if you try doing it intuitively.

Earlier today my desktop stopped recognizing my ethernet as valid, I've tried almost everything I've seen online (reinstalling drivers/disabling/unplug and replug) but it still won't recognize it, what should I do?

Try this, unplug the printer from the pc, uninstall everything related to the printer (driver/software interface if there were any) from control panel, then restart but don't plug the printer, install* the 64-bit driver for win7 first and plug it when it asks you. If it doesn't ask, plug the printer after the driver installation ends, it should say whether it was recognized correctly or not in the tray icon.

If even after all this still doesn't work, then unplug it, uninstall the driver again from control panel, use a program like ccleaner to remove obsolete registry keys, restart and again use ccleaner or similar, then repeat from "*" and see if it works.

I want to carry the lightest shit possible, but I still need to do CAD, design, and general rendering stuff.

Would remotely using a monster computer in my house be a feasible solution?

Related but not necessary:
What would I need to do in order to make it so that all the work and saving happens on the "server" rather than in the lighter "client" I would carry with me?
What specs are we talking about?
Would it make sense to also make this Uber computer my media and file server for all the devices in my house?
Is a personal cloud a meme?

I just replaced my motherboard, processor, and graphics card. At first, it ran fine, like a dream. Got 60fps on fallout 4 on high settings and all that, but now I barly get 40fps on low. It's weirdd. I didn't change anything, everything is up to date, and there are no virses that I know of. has anyone had something similar?
>>
>>58893523
No, it's not, also it depends if the motherboard you choose supports it. Cheap 200 series chipset mobos support 2133/2400, which are the same price. 2400 is only supported by 7th gen intel cpus. If you're splooging on a z270, you may as well get 3000mhz. At most you'll get ~10 fps more.

If two different types of LCD display panel, one TN and one IPS, have identical display measurements (gamut, contrast, black level, white point, deltaE), they should look the same to the regular eye, right? Or are there some other characteristics of different types of LCD panels which don't necessarily show up on professional measurements but would still make the panels look different to a plain old human?

Disregarding viewing angle here of course; let's just assume the TN panel in the equation is a higher end one with viewing angles good enough to avoid any distortion with direct viewing.

I have a power strip. I had a space heater plugged into it. Well, I just happened to be eating on a surface above where this power strip was, and a crumb managed to land in such a way that it created a ton of heat around one prong of the space heater's plug. I discovered it by the smell. There's some warping around the socket, not particularly dramatic. No sign of damage on the space heater plug.

First question, is there any reason I shouldn't be able to use the space heater because of this? It was functioning normally the entire time anyway. There's a little bit of discoloration on the prong, but no real problems with it otherwise.

Second, is there any reason I shouldn't use the other sockets on the power strip? I wouldn't miss the one socket, probably won't use it even if you tell me it's still 100% safe.

What SSD HD do I get? I'm looking through the lists and the only thing that makes sense to me is the capacity. What do I look for in particular to tell them apart? Is the only difference some are very cheap and some are stupid expensive?
>>
>>58895104
But there wouldn't be a tn identical to an IPS. They're fundamentally different. It's like how you just wouldn't find a plasma screen that looked the same as an lcd or a crt. And anyway most of those measurements are more marketing terms then precise figures. And even within the sRGB scale there is a ton of range for what exact colors could look like. That's why people who get two of the exact same high end monitor will often still use a calibrator. You can get high end TNs with good color reproduction though

Don't get a combo drive unless you absolutely have to
>>
>>58895468
Right, sorry, think I typed it wrong. Just wanted the SSD part. How do I tell SSDs apart and how can I figure out if a cheap one isn't garbage?
>>
>>58895447
Can't you go look up reviews or whatever? I mean, all these "Top 10 BEST [x]" lists are made for lazy fucks like you, and now you want someone to spoonfeed you a spoonfeed?
>>
>>58895481
I read them. What I want to know is why are some SSDs $50ish and some are $250 for the same capacity. What sets them apart and how can I figure that out in the stats?
>>
>>58895463
But as you said yourself, quality TN panels exist. If a TN and IPS with similar contrast and color values are put side by side, they should look similar, no?
>>
>>58895497
They would look similar in some ways and really different in others.
>>
>>58895491
Size is the first big one, then there's the overall speed. There's some m.2 ones out there that go 3 or 4 times faster than sata 3 can keep up with, like samsungs 950. But that kind of speed is mostly useless. An 850 is more or less the current gold standard. The farther you go back in time the worse read/write times and random read/write times they will have. Those are what you want to compare btw. But even the older SSDs will do the job quite nicely and blow away any HDD, so if your on a budget anything made after 2012 should work. Avoid shit brands though, like OCZ and pny

Recently won a gtx 960 (2gb). I currently have a 270x in my computer, is it worth to replace it, or am I better off selling it for 100 bucks brand new?
>>
>>58895681
Depends on your monitor res, if you game at 1440 then 4gb is fine. You're gonna want the higher clock speed
>>
>>58895716
so how about the 470 vs gtx 1050ti? 1050ti has higher clock speed but 470 has higher memory bandwith. gpu boss reccomends 470

I'm sick. What game should I play?
>>
>>58895734
From what I've seen from benchmarks comparing the same card with different memory sizes, memory doesn't affect the fps that much, unless you get to a really large resolution. I dunno, I game with a 4gb r9 290x and it feels good at 1440p
