>>
>>58767661
anon, my experience is that there are bad advices everywhere, it's because people are using many different shells and have a different level of experience, then they write a book mirroring their current knowlege, which can help to understand a bit more, but may also teach bad practices

my advise: read all books, compare them and use the best practices

or just use C
>>

>>
>>58767827
Why would it?
stallman is not a philosophically pure person. he follows his ideals when convenient, and ignores them or slightly alters them when the conflict isn't worth it.

stallman is an egoist in denial, afraid of admitting that he just wants some fucking source code instead of a world where he has to rely on other people because he knows he wouldn't get it that way.

his system has some practical merits but his attempts at creating moral justifications are completely pathetic and nonsensical. how low do you have to be to have to make up bullshit "oughts" when you can just say "it would be fucking better"?

>There are various required tests and mandated hours spent in a car before you can legally drive one.

So you think people have to pass the test before they can drive?
Doesn't that test involve driving? Before they have passed?

Your argument seems to be that every person should predict every possible problem they are ever going to encounter, and read up on it before hand.

My argument is just keep a few general-purpose books/guides/whatever around in case shit happens, and learn as you go instead.

For anons who want a working wifi with free software, have a look at https://minifree.org for an adapter.

It's somehow sad that the only legit (IMHO) free distros are currently Parabola and Trisquel, whereas Parabola is basically just Arch with a package that denies nonfree packages (completly retarded solution) and Trisquel being a freed Ubuntu. Why is there no free distro, not based on any nonfree distro?
Just use Debian, which always aimed for freedom, but doesn't make it difficult to install nonfree stuffs.

So, I want some mpv features which arent available by default like playing stuff from archives and caca support.
How would I go with compiling mpv myself? It would be the first time I'm compiling anything. Is there a guide?
>>
>>58770535
Check your repos for it
If it isnt there create a package for your package manager

You can read all of this on your distros wiki with specific instructions for your package manager
>>
>>58770535
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv-build
>>
>>58770535
mpv isn't a good idea for babbis first compiling project, but: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv-build

for simple programs, you just download the source code and check the shipped README and INSTALL files, run ./configure --help to get some options, run make, make install and done

That said, that's just the standard way and many projects don't folllow this, use CMAKE or whatever. You need to know a bit about different languages and how they get compiled in order to know what you're doing.

A good idea is to check if there's an AUR package for your program, doesn't matter what distro you're using, just check the PKGBUILD and you know what to do in order to build the specific program and what flags you should use/may need.

While talking about MPV, anyone know if I can access something like overall color of the current frame from lua?
I want to power a led script around my TV so that it synchs to mpv, but I think I'm going to have to do something like have lua call into C code, which then uses some ffmpeg bindings to get a snapshot of the current frame, process that a bit, and do that like 10 times a second and hope the performance isn't awful.

Also want to make a similar audio project, where the leds change color/brightness to tempo/beat, but at least audio processing is cheap.

What's the state of Nvidia in optimus?

I run arch with gnome + wayland on my xps 15, has a gtx 1050 in conjunction with intel integrated.

Under wayland, my external gpu is completely turned off.

Does Fedora's proprietary solution actually work? Must I wait till gnome 3.24 in march?

Has anyone had any success with getting nvidia optimus to work on wayland either? Is optimus functionality supported in fedora?

Its because they're so productive that useless toolbars, icons and other crap is removed and people use hotkeys, popup menues and scripts to automate their shit.

For example, in order to use firefox, you only need the website and the addressbar, everything else is accessable with hotkeys.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm working on a new Busybox/HURD Operating system called PhilosoOS.

PhilosoOS is based upon the following foundation:

The LILO Bootloader (not yet implemented; need to provide it with support to boot HURD. Working on providing EXTLINUX as the default bootloader)
The HURD microkernel
SYSVINIT
Busybox's interactive shell // Dash as a fallback
dwm // IceWM as the desktop environment

It attempts to stick to the UNIX philosophy, the suckless philosophy, and the GNU project's FOSS philosophy. It could also be called a hipster OS.

What are your thoughts on this operating system? Should I continue development?

Put Ubuntu GNU/Linux on a flash drive

Walk through the installer until it gives you the option to dualboot..

Click the checkbox.

Use the slider to choose where you want to divide your space.

Alternatively:
In your installer's menu, select to shrink your NTFS partition. Once it is shrank, create an EXT4 partition mounted at /. Be sure to leave ~4 GB for a swap partition. Create the swap partition there. Install it.

How exactly? If the search keyword is the "cmd", how do you differentiate between cmd -a one and cmd -b in one single grep? What if you need to modify arguments? Reverse search is quite easier than that and places selected line into the shell for you for modifying.

Go is virtually as fast as C in a lot of cases and not as system-dependent for compiling. That's the point of it.

>>58772243
Even google is shifting away from python to Go. Python and Bash would be heinously, heinously slow for that kind of task either way.

You run
>crontab -e
to add it to your crontab (this opens it in whatever editor you have defined by the $EDITOR environment variable)

Or you can type
>crontab -l
to list all your cronjobs

execute your script with & at the end like
$ ./script &

To end it you will have to get his pid and kill it. Dunno if there's a better solution

to get the pid of the last executed process:
echo $?
to kill a process by name:
pkill firefox
when you background a process with &, it usually should print the pid right away, otherwise type:
jobs -l
bring the last backgrounded process to foreground:
fg
bring the process nr 3 to foreground:
fg 3
then just ^C to stop it

Hey /g/ i have a IBM Pentium 3 T22, Been trying to fix it up as a laptop for school, however im having trouble booting puppy Linux (WaryPuppy) from a USB drive, and the bios will not recognize the USB iso i made, it should be bootable. wat do?
>>
>>58774594
I did this: >>58771650
and now I have Xubuntu on my ThinkPad.

You have an option to boot from the USB, right?
>>
>>58774615
no its missing from the boot list, not sure if i didnt include something?
>>
I already have a solid easy to use distro setup with a De for my regualr daily use, but I kinda wanna try one of the meme distros as a hobby, keeping it minimal and different. Would gentoo with i3 be good to muck around with, or maybe arch and some other WM?
>>
>>58774621
Maybe the BIOS doesn't have an option to boot from USB? I know my Pentium 4 from ~12 years ago didn't have the option to boot from USB.
>>
>>58774649
ive done it with this same laptop when i got it ~3 years ago, unfortunately i los the USB, i know the 1 usb port works, im thinking ive messed up the USB steps somewhere along the way
>>
>>58774672
Try Rufus. The USB should be automatically detected in the devices then choose Create a bootable disk using ISO Image, then choose the ISO. Took less than 10 minutes with Xubuntu, should be even less with how small Puppy is.
