It's okay as a first distro. It has some cool features but most of those are part of budgie so not necessarily Solus exclusive. It's going to be very similar to Ubuntu or Mint in that it "Just Works"™.
>>
>>58757361
Solus is quite straightforward and easy. Just keep in mind that it doesn't have nearly as much support as most bigger distros such as Ubuntu (Solus literally has 3-5 packagers/devs). Assuming your system isn't old as heck, I'd recommend you to try the Budgie version as it's their flagship and a bit more modern than Mate.

Solus project are trying to do some pretty big changes this year. They're switching Budgie to Qt, a new package manager, containers for 3rd party applications etc. Their current 3rd party installation code seems to be spaghetti, installing Chrome can take an hour lmao

If you find Solus to not have enough packages/support, don't be too mad and try Ubuntu or something else
>>
Any recommendations for backup software that supports encrypted backups to amazon drive?

rclone would've been perfect if it supported versioning like rsnapshot.
rsnapshot would've been perfect if it supported third party backends like rclone.

Wanted to run linux virtually just for class to learn linux basics and to learn C..

The idea is to also have it in a folder that sync's through my synology so I can run it on multiple machines (not at the same time of course or the syncing might fuck it up?)

Should this work?

What OS should I use that is virtualbox friendly? Doesn't need to have a desktop, I need to learn VIM anyways also.

Maybe centos?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

What do you mean? Any netinstall variant comes barebones like Arch, so you can build your system yourself.
That said, Arch is piss easy. Install takes an hour reading and copy pasting and you're done. The breakage thing is a meme. Things may break, but not as often as it get's meme'd here.

Should run any linux distro and desktop environment without a problem.

I'll shill my own personal preference which is Fedora. It has official spins that feature various desktop environments or you can install the "main" gnome desktop environment.

name one reason why systemd should be doing the million things it does now. Defend it's continued hostile takeover of linux as a whole. The devs are fucking with the linux kernel, denying any fault and then trying to force any patches to be made to the kerenl itself rather than their shitty software. So I'm reinstalling Manjaro to see if I can pinpoint a problem, and I decided to take a peak at cinnamon.

Perhaps I just don't see the purpose of cinnamon. I think the menu is kind of ugly, but I see no reason to use it over KDE or Mate, my two DEs of choice.

Is there some breakthrough cinnamon thing I missed? Maybe it lies in themes OR WM but I'd rather just use xfce or something instead.

I mean I'm totally open to it because KDE is still >KDE and I don't really enjoy MATE or Xfce for a desktop experience (especially since dolphin is so good) but it still kind of comes off as a why DE

KDE Plasma 5.9 just came out this week, and KDE began running their ubuntu LTS based "non"-distro to provide latest KDE a year ago, which is what I'm using now. They don't call it a distro because it's a fairly minimal install but you still have the ubuntu repos to install whatever you need. OpenSUSE also does a good job in regards to implementing latest KDE.

No shilling here, I just don't know much about other DEs. I like xfce also but it's rather more geared toward simplicity and there's not much else to it AFAIK.

Why would you stored your document on an NTFS partition if you only use Windows for games?

No, I wouldn't have any overlap with NTFS and Linux filesystems at all, because it can only bring problems. I wouldn't trust Windows with access to my EXT4 partitions and I certainly wouldn't want to work with files stored on an NTFS partition from within Linux daily because of permission issues.

>>

>What can I do on debian that I can't do on *buntu?
Nothing. You can do everything the same way on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Gentoo or [shitty obscure downstream distribution which does nothing worthwhile]. The only thing you can't do is use the same package manager across them (technically you can, but that's just ridiculous).
>>
>>58762105
Well, if you're going to put windows only games on that storage you're gonna need some of it to be ntfs. Otherwise just ditch ntfs.
There's good ext4 drivers for windows now so you can access ext4 but AFAIK it's read-only that works well. People advise to not mess with write in that regard - and why should you in the first place.

As to avoid having to make multiple partitions and having a fixed amount of space on each, having to access the NTFS one anyways from linux if I need to put something over there, etc. Let's say I torrent shit, I would have to mount that NTFS partition for said games unless I wanted to boot into windows for that purpose as well.

Most package managers will have a log of that stuff.
I don't know what distro you're running, but it's pretty easy to just search up where it's found.
For example, for Arch: /var/log/pacman.log
Ubuntu/Debian: /var/log/apt/term.log
etc.

normally you wouldn't place an MBR on a partition at all
but if you meant placing a blank MBR at the start of a disk, then yes, sort of

chances are you've wiped your partition table, this is pretty easy to recover from though, you just need to create your partitions again and it'll be back to how it was

note: do NOT create the new partitions with a tool that also formats the partitions, such as gparted, as that will destroy the contents of the partitions

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sda1 * 2048 1933596671 1933594624 922G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 1933596672 1953523711 19927040 9.5G 82 Linux swap / Solaris

you could try to pass the pen drive to the virtual machine.

drop this in your config, it will not give you a toggleable playlist, but display tags (artist, title, comment, track number, etc)
[media.audio]
display-tags=*

[extension.flac]
profile="media.audio"

[extension.ogg]
profile="media.audio"

[extension.opus]

actually I now looked at my config, I saved some notes on how to make a pseudo player
#mpv as music player via minor configuration/script tweaks to clean the interface
#Then use 'alias mpa="mpv --profile music"' on .bashrc
[music]
vid=no
msg-level=file=error:ffmpeg=error:input=error:cplayer=no
load-scripts=yes
lua=~/.config/mpv/scripts/mpa-osd.lua
#if lua doesn't work, change "lua" to "script"
#script=~/.config/mpv/scripts/mpa-osd.lua
>>
>>58766870
cont.

mpa-osd.lua
-- store cursor position on initialization. Note that this isn't guaranteed
-- to run before initial printing has been done and can be inconsistent.
io.write('\27[s')

function on_track_change(name)
-- restore cursor position
io.write('\27[u')

-- clear to bottom of screen
io.write('\27[J')
end

mp.register_event('start-file', on_track_change)

Not really related, but there are some pretty cool things you can do with mpv using the lavfi ffmpeg extension, which allows you to do anything which ffmpeg allows. For example, basic filters like noise, blur, rainbow hue etc.

More related: You can use these also to visualize audio. An example right here:

mpv --vo=xv:colorkey=0x000000 --lavfi-complex='[aid1]asplit[ao][a1];[a1]avectorscope=s=wxga:r=15:m=lissajous_xy:bc=200:gc=100:rc=75:bf=5:gf=3:rf=1:zoom=2[vo]' Track.flac

Pic related.

Check out the available filters and how to use them here: https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html

Hope some of you guys will have fun with it.

OP, why exactly do you think that 4 fucking links to /wg/ shit are necessary in the OP, but not tlcl?

http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php

At least with /flt/ we could edit the template, and stop propagating bad OPs because some faggot removed something and everybody just copy-pasted all the same.

it's also in the copypasta collection, btw

There's a lot of shit in that book I'd probably never use in my life, but it's still pretty nice to have a fairly comprehensive pdf sitting around, especially if you get network problems.

Okay so I'm kinda getting fed up with this issue now:

I have a USB DAC for sound, it's previously worked find with linux but it seems to be having trouble now since I've done a re-install:

It would occasionally just drop sound and would not work, rebooting a number of times fixed it, so I assume it was a sound car load order problem.

I've now created an asound config file and listed the device that has the literal ID "Device" in there. Rebooted, sound worked fine.

I've done a re-install of my windows 7 vm as it was having stability problems and I wanted to resolve that, decide to listen to some music whilst doing it and I have no sound. Wait hang on a minute, when the vm booted I heard sound, go into windows, play the sample songs, sound works.

Go to host system, play song, no sound, I can't even do a speaker test now, that produces pic related amongst the other errors I'm getting when trying to restore alsa.

Help? I have no doubt that rebooting will fix this, but I assume it will the go again at some point.
>>
>>58768695

Okay so I turn off the vm and now my host system sound is back, the fuck do I reslove this.
