For my personal e-mail, I've been using the same Hotmail account that I've been using for the last 16 years. It used to be good, but now it's bloated to shit and I don't like it.

I actually quite like Gmail function-wise, and I use it quite a lot for work (the company e-mail runs on Gmail too). However, the only thing I don't like about it is that it's jewgle, and I don't like their Orwellian practices.

What else can I use? I would definitely like something that is fast/lightweight, and won't get creepy on me.

Writing random numbers does nothing more against data retrieval than zeroing.

Its not always the case, but you probably have a modem from your cable company. They won't have one that allows you to do what you're asking. The best case for this situation is cable -->modem -->ethernet cable --> computer. That weill get you the fastest speeds.

so basically this little 1GB usb I have now has the touch of computer death if they made the mistake of installing to /dev/sda (which I believe is the default of most distros, if not at least I'll get something in the slot)?

does windows default install to /dev/sda? mac os?

i'm just so fascinated at the thought that this shitty usb I got for free from a marketing shill can obliterate entire systems if given the chance

>>
>>58688198
That's the problem and that's why I'm asking this, the place where the router was is in the living room to keep all the rooms with signal, and my desktop is very far away, that's why it has a long ethernet cable that goes through the walls to one of the ports of the router. Now since the router no longer works, I need something to connect the cables to I get internet while the new router arrives. I didn't received any modem because when I got my internet plan I bought my own router.
>>
>>58688212
The order of your /dev/ devices is dependent on the order in which they were detected by the OS. It's not like Windows where you permanently assign drive letters. What is /dev/sda now, may be /dev/sdb on the next boot.
>>
>>58688212
Of course, that's why physical access = comprised machine, most of the time. You'd still need to have access to the boot menu or BIOS, which can be locked down in some extreme cases.

And really, being able to wipe a device is nothing compared to a rubber ducky type attack or even badusb.
>>
>>58688228
You're leaving out important information. The internet cable that you have- what does it go to? If it's a device, give me a model number

>>58688254
that's true, it really isn't as elegant or l33t. And that's what fascinates me about it: a nearly computer-illiterate faggot like me can just stick it into any usb slot and let it run without any of the bells and whistles while getting critically savage results

wiping a machine in many ways is still pretty devastating no matter how anyone looks at it

No. If you are using a VPN, everything that uses the device the VPN lives on goes through the VPN. Including the TOR. A VPN would just make it look like your TOR starts in another location. Usually irrelevant anyway as it is so hard to trace back the start of a TOR anyway.

>But surely the live usb could still irreversibly damage things if I leave it at sda, or would it just return with an error?

There's always a /dev/sda on normal PCs, but which drive it may be is a different story. So yes, setting it to /dev/sda will fuck up "something", but what that is, is sort of a crap shoot. But, /dev/sda IS a good bet.

#!/usr/bin/env bash

## Only attempt to write to devices that are known to exist.
if [ -e /dev/sda ]; then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda; fi
if [ -e /dev/sdb ]; then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb; fi
if [ -e /dev/sdc ]; then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc; fi

Do this for sda, sdb, and any other sd's your mischevious heart desires in a bash script.

VPN's are a different story. It depends on the VPN's encryption protocol and its hard to tell if an ISP can see a TOR through a VPN. I know a lot of ISP's can see the TOR browser itself, but can't see anything you're doing in it.

I think some VPN's could hide a TOR browser, but I can't say for sure. Someone on here would probably know.

"using a VPN does hide your internet activity from your internet service provider. It can also hide the fact that you are using TOR, which may flag some suspicion when the feds start asking ISPs to provide data about their users."

>so my question is that will this work on other computers?

Yes

Replace /dev/sda with what ever hard drive/partition your intending to overwrite.

It will not work on machines with crazy ass proprietary disk drivers and secureboot shenanigans.
>>
>>58688506
It sounds like you have a phone line coming in. This means that you NEED a modem, and really if you're not planning on having two separate units, it should also have routing ability (they call the combo a gateway) for security purposes. You won't be able to do anything until you get one. See if your isp will let you lease if you don't want to buy

How powerful is CLion for C development?

The thing that's always pissed me off about C ide's is that with other languages such as Java and C# it's nearly impossible to make a syntax error because the ide catches it and warns you explicitly by making the file icon red, in this way you can see how many bugs you have in seconds.

C being a small and simple language you'd expect that to be the case too - but it's not. I've been searching for this feature for ages. It really pisses me off in visual studio that you can have something absolutely trivial like a missing semicolon and the ide will give no warnings at all.

I've used Awesome, StumpWM, and xmonad. I think I preferred xmonad the most, but you'll need to know a bit of haskell to configure it. I liked StumpWM as well, but I like Lisp too, so am biased.

Thanks. By "newbie" I mostly mean that I know zero code and am still relatively ass at the command line, but I've been messing around with linux for a few years and tried several DEs. I've never really understood how cross compatible packages are. Like if I understand it correctly, a package written for fedora won't work on arch, but one written for ubuntu *might* work on debian because it's upstream? And if a package has like a "g" or a "k" at the beginning of it's name, then it probably requires a specific desktop environment? Does using a WM instead limit what packages you can install without bloating your install?

>>
>>58689015
There might be distro specific updates to packages, and different distros can have different means of managing packages. The latter point is probably what you're referring to. If you're compiling some code, it should still work across distros for the most part unless it's some other architecture.

There are packages that are a part of a larger group of packages meant for particular desktop environments. However, you should still be able to install individual packages instead of installing the entire desktop environment.

And no, a WM doesn't limit what packages you can install. They can be used in conjunction with a DE, but many people use them on their own.

Do you mean like repos/package managers or differences in the filetype and the way the package is put together?

>should still be able to install individual packages instead of the entire desktop environment

So say I wanted to use a media player built to work with cinnamon, it would install a few packages but still be much lighter than installing cinnamon outright?

Cool. I appreciate the help. I've had a surprisingly hard time finding useful information about this
>>
>>58689154
Kind of both. For example, you can make a Debian specific package with dpkg. Ubuntu and Debian both still use apt afaik. Arch uses pacman, Gentoo uses portage, etc.

You should still be able to install the media player. Now it may depend on some outside packages specific to the environment yes, but it's not going to be as heavy as a full environment install.

>>58691620
I only ask because I haphazardly ran past a post on /g/ mentioning how you can possibly create/delete icloud users to bypass the lock:

"On the iCloud lock screen, hold volume down and home for ~20 seconds (it's actually 15, but I'd suggest overshooting to be safe because you don't get visual confirmation).

Connect to a computer running iTunes and open a terminal/command prompt. You want to reset the management directory by sending an rmdir command. It will then load up with a new user profile.

On a Mac, you'll need to go through Restore Manager to do this. Use the -r[estore] and -f[lash] flags.
rm -rf ~ # rmdir /s /q %USERPROFILE%

On a PC, you can do it directly- but do make sure to use an admin command prompt.
rmdir /s /q %USERPROFILE%

Hope this helps. I last used this on a 6S+; I don't think anything with 7+."

I have no clue if this makes any sense but it seems some people have ideas at least.

If the router uses a hub instead of a switch you might be able to sniff in everything with the Pi's nic plugged into one of the ports.

If your end game is a real man in the middle attack then you would need to add a second NIC to the Pi. Which is actually really easy. It would limit bandwidth and that might be suspicious if the connection you're tapping saturates regularly saturates the 1000/100mb interface.

Why don't you just use the router itself for the attack. Most routers are very similar to a Pi. Damn near all of them use an embedded ARM/MIPS processor running linux.

Your not going to zoom all the fucking way down. Just zoom in a little bit. Take about four screen shots then put them together in paint.

Do the math, find out the DPI of the printer you're going to use, the size of your print, your screen resolution, and use that to find out how many pictures you need to stitch together.

A 1m x 1m print will only require a few screen caps.

You can think of a gradient as the slope (or in English "steepness") of a curve. Gradient decent just steps in the opposite direct of of the slope proportional to the slope until it reaches a point where the slope zero (aka flat). This is finding a low point, or a valley or w/e your want to call it. It wont always reach the lowest point, though, just a bottom of a valley (math term is local minimum (minima if plural), see pic related).

Do note that this whole post was VERY non-mathematical. If I used some of these words to explain this to a mathematician they would yell at me.

So this is an executable on some machine that runs with root permissions. When I try running say "<program> 0 50000 R > /tmp/out" the output file doesn't seem to contain anything from memory, but its filesize is correct.
W-why is this?

What is the state of HP laptops these days? On the market for a new shitposting laptop after my 5.5 year old HP pavilion finally shit the bed. Are the ventilation systems still shit and overheating a big issues on the current models? That was my biggest issue with my old one. Otherwise the thing was a tank.

Not looking for anything crazy, mainly just for shitposting, Netflix/streaming, maybe some roller coaster tycoon, just casual around the house usage. Budget isn't a big issue. Was thinking i5 and 1TB hdd

Thoughts? I'm not a /g/ regular so go easy on me

As an example something like this would be right up my alley

You can do better than 1366 x 768 for $500, at least refurbished.

I've been using this fucker for years and never set up QoS or traffic shaping
all I want to do is prevent someone from using up all the bandwidth at once, limiting each device to 50% or less of the available capacity

as for the ads thing you'd need to root to install a system wide adblocker
on my phone I can't root it so I just run firefox with adblock and don't bother with any apps that run ads

I have a tablet Thinkpad from 2009 (x200) but I got the click of death from the hard drive late last year. I haven't tossed it yet though. Would it be difficult to get a SSD and replace the broken hard drive with that? I've never messed with hardware at all, but it's my hobby/Linux machine and I'd rather just get a cheap SSD instead of buying another laptop. Thank you.

Alt + Ctrl causes my PC to go into sleep on Windows 10.
I can't find any key binding like that and no answers on google.

>>
>>58693793
if it's anything like my X220T you just unscrew the HDD access plate and slap a SSD in there, go read the manual
http://tim.id.au/laptops/lenovo/thinkpad%20x200%20tablet%20x201%20tablet.pdf
sandisk makes decent cheap SSD's one can be had for around $50

1600x900 or better

I'm going to be like everyone else on /g/ and reccomend a thinkpad
t420 can be had for under $200, though if you want a IPS screen you're better off getting a X series one

Decent free VPNs? Need to torrent something as a favor and don't wanna risk hearing from my ISP for a minor torrent.

I'm a little strapped for cash for paid VPNs at the moment.

at one point I had around 500 "copyright infringement" emails but nothing happened

Like I said not for me, was asked as a favor. Though I might also have to get around to downloading all those /ic/ books. If I can end up paying for things I always do, except college textbooks because fuck unique printed covers that cost $200 and I only use for a single class.

1600 DPI(dots per inch)=40x40 pixels per square inch

A 1m x 1m print is about 39in x 39in

39in x 40pixels = 1560

Your image can be 1560X1560 pixels.
