$200ish

I have no diver, that's why I was kind of looking at the Ray II. I don't like the small numbers on the Mako II bezel and I don't think the Mako USA II is worth $80 more. Not to mention, it looks sort of bland. I didn't like the round pips on the Ray at first but they're growing on me.

Unfortunately, it's what sells. And cheap brands can't make good original designs.
>>
>>58662793

Yep bunch of anti-social plebs trying to give fashion advice. Plus all the watches they glamorize are all shit brands brands anyway. It's all about the brand in the real business world.

Not shit terrorist watches and that knock-off brand Seiko
>>
Which is worse guys:

1) "the collector"
>always buying new watches to get that passing honeymoon buzz and fill that gaping void with shiny inanimate objects
>can't part with any of them, and they rot away in his closet

2) "the flipper"
>always buying new watches to get that passing honeymoon buzz and fill that gaping void with shiny inanimate objects
>constantly selling off his watches after a few months

Sure, the flipper gives his watches a chance at another life with someone else, but for some reason the flipper strikes me as the more mentally unsound of the two.
Or simply the poorer of the two, putting him in the "30k millionaire" faggot bracket.

It goes without saying that anyone owning more than 2-3 watches (dresser, daily beater, super beater) is a faggot, no matter how rich he is.
>>
>>58662963
Not everyone buys watches to make an impression on others. Some people just enjoy watches and buy what they like. Crazy, I know.
>>
>>58662963
Most folks aren't in the "real business world" you speak of and even then, hardly anyone gives a shit about your watch
>>
>>58662884
>And cheap brands can't make good original designs.

They can, it's just that they have no pride and would rather shamelessly copy others who make cool shit instead. The only thing worse than the shitter """"homage"""" brands are the tasteless plebs who buy that garbage.
>>
>>58662531
It doesn't need an update, it needs to be remade entirely if anything.

I'm myself compiling a list of all the actually interesting, iconic, unique watches. Because really, 99% of watches out there are generic uninspired copies, and many remain uncopied and unmatched.

Here's my current list generally ordered by style:

>Diver
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms
Rolex Submariner
Tudor Black Bay
Doxa Sub
Vostok Amphibia
Seiko 6105 'Turtle'

>Square
Cartier Tank
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso
Cartier Santos Dumont

>Racing/chronometer
Omega Speedmaster
Zenith El Primero
Heuer Monaco
Seiko 6138 'UFO'/'Yachtman' & 'Jumbo'

>Pilot
IWC Portuguese
Breguet Type XXI
Sinn 556
Sinn U*
Sinn EZM*
Breitling Navitimer
Seiko 6117 Navigator Timer

>Dress
Patek Philippe Calatrava
Rolex Datejust
Audemar Piguet Royal Oak
Grand Seiko
Panerai Luminor

>Alpinism
Seiko Alpinist
Victorinox I.N.O.X.
Rolex Explorer

>Digital
Casio Digital Classic/F-91W
Casio Data Bank
Casio G-Shock
Seiko G-757
Tissot T-Touch

>Unclassifiable
Accutron Spaceview
LIP Mach 2000
Autodromo Group B
A. Lange & Sohne Datograph
Hamilton Ventura
Mondaine Classic
Orient Disk
Seiko Giugiaro 7A28-7000

What would you add?
>>
>>58663157
No they can't. It's actually really hard to make a good original design, believe it or not.
And getting someone to make one for you is really expensive.
>>
>>58663206
Wow, you're a fucking retard.
>>
>>58663256
It's not really a question of design though, it's more a question of the materials used: if you use shitty materials, you can't make good designs, otherwise they just look cheap.
The designs of cheap watches are in fact incredibly well thought out, simply they're made with the cheap materials in mind, trying to hide their shitty quality as much as possible.
>>
>>58663265
Thanks anon.
>>
>Tudor Black Bay
>Anything but a budget submariner

I would remove Doxa which is an absolute garbage brand that costs way too much money considering they're made in fucking China.

I would replace it with an Oris Aquis Depth Gauge which is actually something unique (and relatively new).

Some other watches I'd throw in would be a VC Malte for the square category (actually more barrel shaped but it's unique an beautiful)

Throw out the Sinn watches they're shit.

"Alpinism" should be changed to field watch.

>>
>>58663425
Well this isn't so much a list of "my favorite watches", I mean there's a Panerai in there, it's just that I find them well-designed, unique, iconic and/or influential.

I find the Black Bay largely different, with color tones and contrast that are unlike anything else, though I wouldn't wear one, the Tissot T-Touch was full of innovation and a best-seller, though I wouldn't wear one either, Sinn designs are recognisable, very influential, yet still varied, and that Victorinox is well-known in some circles as an affordable, bomb-proof mechanical.

As for Grand Seiko, they obviously exist in many options, but I'm listing ranges in here too. All GS are still similar in design.

>>58663509
>Oris Aquis Depth Gauge
Was currently mirrin' Oris watches, plenty good stuff in there. Though Doxas are still quite iconic and there's plenty great vintage ones.

VC Malte is pretty good though.
>>
>>58662494
Why did Zenith decide to mess with perfection?

Also WHAT were they thinking with that overlap that covers the chronograph minute markers? Like how can designers working for a big watch company make such a stupid mistake?

They kinda both belong, but the Turtle certainly does.

It's more than iconic, being the absolute Vietnam watch, sold in US army stores during the war, worn by both sides as Vietcongs picked them off dead bodies, and still common among veterans. It's also seen in countless movies, most notably Apocalypse Now.

Nothing screams "Phế liệu máy bay trực thăng này! Lỗ đít!" like a Turtle.

I think anon just wanted to list nice and original looking watches, not argue which brand is the best. Even with your graph, that doesn't quite give me an idea of what good watches there are from either of those brands.

Lol what?
>>
>>58665277
Nah m8. Japan or Korea.
>>
>>58665495

It's funny how IWC have been around a lot longer than Rolex, yet Rolex have managed to refine their processes and are able to create 100% in-house to a near flawless standard while launching many significant innovations over the years.

IWC are still busy putting ETA movements in their overpriced polished turds
>>

>>58666410
>>58666346

Yep, Self-winding rotor and Waterproof case are probably the biggest ones
>>
>>58666410
Automatic movements have been around much longer than Rolex. It's just the 360 degree rotating weight that's new.
>>
>>58666557
bumper movements are shit. oscillating weights made automatics viable
>>
>>58666599
Keep in mind, the oscillating weight isn't truely first done by Rolex, as there were some watches in the 1700s made that way. But it was so few and elusive Rolex may not have known about them at the time.

But improving automatic mechanisms is categorically different from inventing it.
>>

Both have their cons and defects.

Tudor's new caliber seems very good and reliable, but it needs to pass the test of time an I have yet to examinate in irl. However, their asthetics are more interesting.

GS, in the other hand, have workhorse movements that imho lack a bit more sofistication in their finishing, with "cotes de Geneve" being too shallow, hard and sterile, and in some cases no anglage at all, like >>58668345 but with overall great QC so you'll probably get a close to perfect dial, hands and case, to look at.

Got a 5621-7000T because it was more or less mint and I liked the styling (full 70s), thinking of eventually going for one that conforms more to the Grammar of Design eventually because you can never have too many!

No pictures I'm afraid because it's 3am here and I'm knackered

I revise my previous opinion. You clearly need some Daini Seikosha in your life. If you want something full grammar of design then look for an LM Special 5206-6130 or a 5216-8020. Both have the iconic design language.

Keep in mind that the 5216 lost the instant day/date change at midnight the 5206 had to gain protection against people breaking the quick-set by using it between 9pm and 3am.

Of all the watches I own, that is the one I would part with last. It's the most accurate mechanical movement I've ever seen.

Actually, that's a a good question. Of all your watches, which would you keep if you could only have one?

If I'm forced to choose only one, and I mean at gunpoint to my head, rusty knive to my dick and balls, I'd sell all of them and buy something like a Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30 (pic related), a JLC Hybris Mechanicca, or a ALS Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst.

No problem. Wear what you like m8.

>>58671983
The fact that some brand has in-house calibers is not as important as how those movements are made, or how sofisticated they are.

Montblanc has several grades among its familys, but Chopard, Tudor and Breitling make way better watches than Montblanc's base and entry level models.

The Villeret manufacture is something completely apart, and yet, sports the Montblanc name.

This is my problem with that shitty chart. You cannot compare brands as a whole, only especific models against each other.

My Omega Speedmaster MOTFM moonphase

>>What makes the watch mechanically/technically interesting
Is as reliable as they come, sturdy as fuck, the bezel can take lot of damage without showing any harm, it has a chronograh, a date, a moonphase -wich is very useful to me-, it's comfortable and not that ultra expensive to service/repair/replace.

>>Anything else unique or novel that compels you to wear it:
MOTFM fuckers!!
(even if it's not the historically correct reference)

>>Which watch, if given to you, would dethrone your most worn watch:
Maybe
the Omega MOTFM Aventurine Dial
or
the IWC GST Perpetual Calendar Chronograph

>>What makes that watch mechanically/technically interesting:
MOTFM Aventurine dial: SPACE, bitch!

IWC GST: Is an understated Perpetual Calendar Chronograph with moonphase in a 120m water resistant titanium case.

>cons
MOTFM AD: 44mm, so no that comfortable, and the dial might brake or shatter from a hard hit.

IWC GST: Probably not even nearly as sturdy, thicker, 43mm case, scratch magnet, more expensive to service/repair/replace.

I love the case design and its character. I default to it because it seems to handle just about everything. Swimming, rock climbing, hiking, travel. Haven't had a single issue.

Unless it breaks I don't see anything dethroning it. I wear it often because it's a goddamn workhorse that I don't have to baby.

If it does manage to break, we'll see. Probably a sinn since by the time this thing breaks down those should be well within my price range.

>Which you wear the most:

My 1975 King Seiko 5256-8010

>What makes the watch mechanically/technically interesting

The 52xx movements was the final high-end mechanical movement developed by Daini Seikosha before Seiko's high-end moved to quartz and is amongst the best series produced automatic movements every designed.

The 52 King Seiko Special was developed as Daini Seikosha's final statement of what they were capable of and was adjusted to a much higher standard than normal King Seiko's. According Seiya of Seiya Japan (who captured much of Seiko's unrecorded history by talking to the people who worked there), the KS Specials were adjusted to beyond base Grand Seiko levels. They also have a screw type micro-adjuster, greatly easing regulation.

My particular example appears to bear this out, running between +0s/d and +6s/d in six positions and on the wrist having run for 12 and 14 days at a cumulative +0s/d without ever having exceeded +/-2s in the first case and +/1s in the second.

>Anything else unique or novel that compels you to wear it:

It's a fairly definitive example of Seiko's Grammar of Design design language, has a white sunburst dial, rectangular baton indices and nice hands.

>Which watch, if given to you, would dethrone your most worn watch:

Grand Seiko SBGH001

>What makes that watch mechanically/technically interesting:

It sports what is very likely to be the single most technically advanced conventionally regulated movement in series production today. Because I regulate my own watches, I prefer convention regulation with a micro-adjuster to free sprung balances, and the 5hz beat rate of the 9s85 should somewhat compensate for the downsides of conventional regulation.

>Anything else unique or novel that contributes to the dethroning

A truly astronomical level of finishing and similarly Grammar of Design styling, but with a bracelet.

Pretty good indeed, there's a strong identity to the entire Nighthawk range, along with the older Promaster Sky range leading up to it: thin bezel making for a large dials, distinctive markers and slide rule, sword hands, knurled crowns, and the shininess of the transparent dial above the solar panel makes for a highly recognisable design, certainly the most striking one of the EcoDrive range. I've been contemplating getting one of the radio-controlled sapphire ones from the older range, back then when this design started.

Though Citizen strangely hasn't updated them in a long time, pretty much the entire catalog has been updated, but nothing new on the Promaster/Nighthawk horizon, and it's apparently not being restocked anywhere. Might be the time to get one.

>Hey m8. I read the list and I found it interesting. If you please, I'd love to see what watches you actually own, and I don't care if they are expensive or affordable.
>cheers

Well for now I own:
>Rolex Explorer I
>Laurel Alpinist
>SARB017
>Seiko 6117
>Seiko Type II

And they're all back home. I've been spending the past few years in-between third world countries, where wearing an expensive watch isn't a good idea unless it appears utilitarian and beat up, and for now it's a SKX whose sole luxury is a custom bezel.

But I'll soon return to civilization with my hard-earned shekels, and finally able to wear whatever I want, and I'm planning to expand this little collection with more original, unique, and above all varied watches. To me it's all about the design, I don't really care whether it's cheap quartz or haute horlogerie as long as there's this little "something" that clicks for me.

I'm hopefully not going to buy all those watches, but I'm already set to begin with a Reverso, an Autodromo Group B and an Eterna Super KonTiki. Also surely an Accutron Spaceview and a Seiko G757 which will be smaller purchases. And I've added the QlockTwo W, Sarpaneva and pic related Vulcain Cricket Nautical to my list.

If you have well-designed watches to suggest, I'm more than interested.

TagHeuer won't release a fantastic watch tomorrow out of the blue tomorrow because they know their reputation is shit and their role in the world is to produce shit.

There were originally plans for a not-limited 200m version (this is 300m), perhaps not gilded either, but I don't know if that is still true. Your best bet is to stalk Ebay and private sale forums Watchuseek and Watch.ru. You could ask on the latter to be added to the wait list but that seems like a lost cause.

In the 350-800 range I would suggest something like a Maurice Lacroix Eliros Moonphase (pic related) or some piece of vintage Seiko, like the ones you already posted.
Keep in mind the Maurice Lacroix is a bit averpriced for what it is, but imho looks really nice and fulfills the swiss meme checkbox (although is probably not totally swiss)

Well my friend, the thing is although I like Patek as a brand, most of their entry level models are not as well made as they could, in oposition to their most expensive; and this has always bothered me.

For example, if you look at pic related, you'll notice that both of these movements have the same mainplate but while the simple time looks very good, it doesn't has gold chatons, not are the cotes de Geneve really deep and the beveling or "anglage" isn't as wide as it could be.

Disregarding their PP seal, the manufacture actually has different standars for their watches, depending fo how expensive they are, and for me, it sounds like a lack of respect to their basic models and their customers.

I'll still buy a PP eventually, but for now, that lack of enthusiasm has stoped me from doint it.

And this in not mi opinion only, check this recent thread:
http://forums.watchuseek.com/f2/finishing-better-than-lange-3916098.html

That's why I went for A. Lange & Söhne.

AL&S in the other hand, has the exact same stardar fo finishing to all their movements, disregarding if they are 40k -like one of mines-, 90k or 350k (pic related) the only thing that changes is the sofistications and complexity of the construction, due to the complications in place.

You can see here that the three calibers have exceptionally deep cotes de Geneve, bright and strong perlage, clean and wide anglage, and in all three cases the balance wheel bridge is hand carved with a gorgeous motiff.

In my humild book, A. Lange & Söhne is a better brand that PP and is the greatest not independet brand right now.

Plus, I like their designs more.

I also see what you mean, but belive me, you should try to judge a watch for itself, not the brand. For example, I don't really like Breitling as a brand, but I know one of the best quartz ever made came from them, and maybe I'll buy one, disregarding of its origin.

>>58684636
The guy is asking for a moonphase quartz for less than 800 usd and I think the Eliros looks quite good and is better made than some other cheap options.

This is precisely what I mean whe I say that you should judge the watch itself first, not the brand.
yesus

>>58684775
I fell you're lacking a more formal piece, an elegant one. How do you feel about JLC Classic Reverso family?

>>58684855
Yes, I have JLC and they are extremely, extremely well made, plus they are probably the biggest manufacture all around that develops haute horlogery, their familys are quite diverse, and also, their range of complications and decorations. I love JLC.

However, with the exception of the very special, they are not as well finished as AL&S or PP, but they do use decoration techniques others can't, and improvements other brands won't even dream to (see the new Gyrotourbillon 1).

>pic related, the calibers offered by JLC solely to the Reverso family.

JLC offers haute horlogery that sometimes can be bought for the price of an expensive Rolex, and I think that's what Archie means.
>>
>>58684855

I'm not Lawyeranon, but I would argue that JLC's horological pedigree is so strong that it deserves to be considered in the same breath as the big four.

For one thing, as far as I know JLC has NEVER used an ebauche, while JLC ebauches have been used in PP, VC and AP watches.

Not a fan of Reversos to be quite honest. It's difficult for me to accept them as true formal pieces considering the actual purpose of their inception. My Master Control is essentially my go-to for formal events. I also alternate with my Vintage Ingenieur (a tad thick for a dress watch but it's possible with certain shirt cuffs) for less formal events.

>>58685128

The AP just doesn't do it for me. With regards to the GS, I've looked through the line but I find too much of a semblance to my Vintage Ingenieur with the hands and the markers on the GS watches that I do like.

I'm kind of leaning towards adding a Glashutte PanoMatic or another JLC after selling off the SuperOcean.

>>
Stumbled across a watchthred a while ago, I don't have a watch yet, but would like one for when I go out so my arms are less naked. Since I'm relatively poor and a wristlet, the Timex Easy Reader seemed like a good choice.
Are there any similar in style/size/pricerange (€45 around here) you'd recommend?

I'll be in HK next week, anyone need me to check out anything or any pic requests while I'm there?
>>
>>58691317

Yes. Sell that AP and buy a PP, VC, ALS or JLC instead.
>>
>>58691368
I'll try on some ALS again. I'm really liking the VC tradionelle small seconds lately. No need to sell the AP though. Definitelyi not because someone on 4chan says to do so.
>>
>>58691385
AP is a brand in decline tbqh. you'd be doing yourself a favor by selling it off.

I brought that watch today and I love it. 10/10 would recommend for £100.

About to put the trigger on a used seiko quartz watch with moonphase but not sure about which one yet.

This one...

Pros: no seconds hand, day/night + moon phase complication
Cons: weird lugs but accepts normal straps, maybe a bit femenine looking

...or this one?

Pros: cooler case design, AP inspired
Cons: second hands that goes tick tick tick, bad lug design that won't accept other straps, probably bad printing of the dial (see the Seiko logo)

Mako/ray/usa 2 and the skx series is objectively better in every way.

They both look pretty bad, although if the second were not two tone it would be a massive improvement.

What's wrong with two tone watches? I kinda like the 80s/90s yuppie vibe of it

Thanks lawyer bro appreciate the pic. You've cemented one my love for VC.

The dial alone.. Hngggggg

I hope it doesn't collect much dust while you wear your others

From pic. some jewels have 2 (blue) screw, others have 3. In a few cases there are no screws.

Why?

Design is tidy, but really, would it kill them to use the full area of the face rather than leaving the outer 5 mm bare??
