Is there a way to compress each file into a separate .zip file? I got a bunch of .gb ROMs that I want to compress to use with my emulators. WinRAR had a easy way to do it in GUI and I could run

Install an out-of-the-box GNU/Linux OS, like Mint. When I first booted, it automatically found the newest nvidia driver, and all other drivers are working just as well.

>>
>>58661584
Dont start with ubuntu. unity isnt even a meme (also canonical and amazon cancer). try debian instead.
you first steps will be to get to know the package manager and the different DEs. Try at least 2-3. Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Cinnamon, e.g.
if you feel comfortable with those, you can advance. Try and install arch for example. Although not being that difficult, it is a novel experience to install an OS without a GUI. (dont use Antergos, this is a just a meme). Arch has quite a good repository if you ask me, others may disagree (get used to people disagreeing about pretty much everything; therefore try it out yourself). Maybe check out window managers (which is like the skeleton of a DE), openbox, i3 or something along the lines. Do some ricing just for shits and giggles.

Gentoo comes as last of your options I suppose. Compiling your own kernel is an advanced task and needs you to know linux and your computer a bit.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Not if you're careful about what you download, but frankly, the same is basically true of Windows.

Even if you were to get infected with something, it's unlikely the virus would be aware of WINE and would just fuck up your WINE dir, which could be easily deleted and regenerated. Theoretically it is possible that it could be written to attack the Linux side too and fuck up your home directory, but AFAIK no such virus currently exists.

I'm being forced to use Ubuntu Gnome 16.10 for a while.
This PC is a low end AMD APU, A4-6300.
System is using Gallium 0.4 and I feel that the performance is lacking. I thought about checking additional drivers and installing the proprietary driver, some "processor microcode firmware for AMDCPUs", but I'm a little scared.
This PC could explode if I install this?
I never hear good things about AMD and drivers on linux.

Quick question, I'm familiar with Architect as a "noob-friendly" way to install Arch, but I've also seen that there are some other similar friendly installers that I believe are more up to date. Just wondering what the names are, as I've seen them dropped around here before.

Thanks!
>>
>>58663805
processor microcode is microcode updates
your cpu already runs it.

microcode works fine.

It's the proprietary graphics driver that sucks big shlongs.

If it's not the LTS version I would recommend against installing it. It's only worth trying on the LTS version, since it purposefully avoids upgrading xorg/kernel if possible to avoid your installation shitting the bed because gpu drivers

Alright, I've decided I am going to download Gentoo on my Thinkpad. I have only tried to install Gentoo once before, months ago, on my desktop, and I failed. I have been using Ubuntu based distros on my main computers for a while now, and all I really use them for is c/ruby programming and anime, to be completely honest. I don't care about any files on my Thinkpad, I can back up all my pictures and stuff on a flash drive. Is installing Gentoo as still somewhat of a Linux noob a good idea? Will most of the hardware in my Thinkpad work out of the box? Is following the handbook actually all I need to make a safe install?
>>
>>58664487
installing gentoo is literally following a step-by-step tutorial

it's a chore because you need to compile it.

yes it's a dumb idea, as a linux noob you will get absolutely no benefits of gentoo while you will still waste your time compiling it.

never mind, what you need to do (if you haven't already) is create the ~/xinitrc file and put

at the end of the file.
.xinitrc is a startup script, so you can run commands before that last line

Here's what I did. Thank god I can still type with gedit.

I had installed KDE just to get a feel of what it's like, and it broke my fonts. Every font had no antialiasing, so I promptly got rid of KDE. That didn't fix it, and everything was defaulting to the Tlwg Typo font for some reason. I then tried to replace every instance of "fonts" I could find with a backup I made a couple of months ago when everything was fine. Big mistake. It broke everything even further, so I reinstalled the ubuntu font family, dejavu fonts, some other fonts, and forced the regeneration of the cache. Tha brought some stuff back, but everything else is still rectangles.

Changing fonts doesn't do much, but it fixed the terminal. Firefox is still unreadable though.

I've got a laptop that can't boot anymore into Windows, it dropped while I was using it so I thought it's surely the HDD.
I'm planning on installing Lubuntu (or any other distro that you recommend) and keep it on an USB drive (I know how to do that).
Then I want to see if I can access my Windows drive and HDD, I have really important files in there that I can't afford to loose, and I don't have any backup.
The problem is I have no experience with Linux, I guess that I'll have to some advanced shit on the terminal in order to do that but I don't know anything, the only command that I know is Screenfetch.
I don't know this if it's appropriate to post this here but whatever, I'm not a /g/ guy.

If I were in your position I would probably just completely uninstall the freetype package, then make sure every single fontconfig configuration file has been removed, and then reinstall freetype.

But please take this advice with a grain of salt. I have no idea what might happen to your system if you remove freetype, it might even lock up for all I know.

All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>due to your microphones or even speakers, because speakers can be a microphone as well, membrane being moved and therefore electrones being pushed around

By the time the already very faint sound reaches a mic or speaker it will have decreased to almost nothing due to the inverse square law. Any noise received will almost certainly not be detectable due to the low sensitivity of the mic.

In addition there will be losses from the mic/speaker size/material not having resonance equal to or a fraction of the clocks ticking components.

>the ticking of the clock in your room is producing flowing electricity

If it's an electric clock it's most likely emitting spurious emissions/radio waves from its oscillator(and the wires/leads/traces connected to said oscillator). The frequency of that oscillator/circuit can be used to identify the device that emitted it. The emission of course travels through the air and creates voltage/current(via induction) in nearby electronics. It is a very tiny amount of RF, which is also subject to the inverse square law. But yes, your clock is producing flowing electricity in certain circuits of your electronics. Unless you have tempest level shielding, which you probably don't.

TD;DR

His bat shit insane rant/joke overlooked the even more insane notion that proprietary computer hardware/components could potentially identify the make/model of your clock from across the room.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer from start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

>before I realized that as a student, I'm doing the *exact* same thing on both Linux and Windows
How is that a downside?

Think about it. The question isn't "what does Linux force me to do differently?", the question is "what CAN I do differently in Linux?"

The fact that you were able to do similar activities with a similar work flow without thinking about it is a good thing, not a bad one.
If you want to know what benefits you might be able to find with Linux you'd have to post what it is that you use your machine for.

Beyond that though, there are technical benefits. For starters you have a system being developed by people that actually give a shit about your privacy and security, unlike Microsoft that literally couldn't care less.
You have access to nice clean repositories for installing just about anything you'd ever need, you never have to go download shit from random websites, ever (unless you want something obscure like an indie game, and even then it's still likely to be in a repository)
You also have a more modern filesystem that doesn't need to be defragged to prevent things from slowing down, and a _true_ multiuser system (not one created by throwing a patch on top of a single user system like windows) which comes with a huge amount of added security benefits. (Programs are typically installed as root, but run as your user. That means no malware you contract while using the program can possibly fuck with your system files, because you don't have permission. All it can do is fuck with shit inside your ${HOME} directory)

All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

fyi even when one uses systemd, it's expected to keep both of those enabled. afaik it doesn't break anything to disable OpenRC yet though but it might in the future

Just delete xorg.conf

You may want to/have to do a "sudo Xorg -configure" after deleting the file. Make sure X is not running when you do this. I'll say it again, run the command before X starts. This may or may not generate an xorg.conf depending on the current phase of the moon. If the file is created move it to the appropriate directory(s) and set the permissions correctly.

Xorg will use a default configuration if the xorg.conf file is not present. So don't freak out if the file is not generated.

It's actually a giant pain in the ass when the system just uses a default configuration that's not stored in or read from an xorg.conf file, or planet within reach of current space travel technology. And if you manually create(instead of generate) an xorg.conf with anything(even one line) in it, none of the 1,000+ default settings are loaded. 90% of those default settings are required or shit will go horribly wrong.

To avoid this create an xorg.conf.d directory and place the settings within a file in the directory, the file must start with a 2 digit number greater than 10. This will add settings without ignoring of all the defaults. Don't fuck up the file permissions. Changes to files in this directory may be overwritten by settings in xorg.conf, yes that's right xorg.conf might over ride the settings here. Files are read from top to bottom. Files in xorg.conf.d are loaded/read before xorg.conf, so you'd better hope whatever variables you set are not set in xorg.conf(or on mars).

And good luck trying to dump the "defaults" into a file. If you think -configure didn't work, guess again. It did, they are just not stored in a file(or plane of existence) but are created upon starting X(or running -configure). Also they are default settings generated based on your hardware, so you are never going to find out exactly what settings are used in the absence of an xorg.conf on your system.

xorg.conf locations(you have more than one) vary by distro

>post what it is that you use your machine for

I'm a college freshman. As of yet I haven't encountered any proprietary culture - i.e. teachers/"coworkers" (peers) that only take .docx files, so my workflow would be pretty uninterrupted switching from Windows to Linux. I mean shit, all I do is enter homework online, all of my learning is still done with a textbook, pencil, and paper. I suppose I type papers up but LibreOffice is normie-ready.

Are the Linux browsers any good? I use edge - yeah yeah make jokes about MS software - because the UI is lightning fast and as mentioned, I'm a lightweight user. Last time I booted firefox up it'd spend 3 seconds telling me it had to check for add on updates, and then would take half a second to switch tabs, break add ons, and was just customization hell. Introduced a boot up bug that took me a month to find and delete..I know chrome runs on Linux as well but I'm not poking a google product I don't have to, with a 10 ft pole.

I also do a bit of hobbyist programming, I'm learning C++ with g++ via msys2, and VSC. Works with no issues whatsoever.

I would be very appreciative if someone with linux could compile the latest commit for windows .. again.
https://github.com/martin-tornqvist/ia
I tried compiling it myself, tried Linux Mint through Virtualbox for the first time, spent a good 6 hours fiddling around with this new OS trying to install stuff, and now I'm quite embarrassed to make this request again. I made a /wsr/ thread for it, but I highly doubt anything will come of it. I just can't compile the thing. This feels like a very insignificant and ridiculous request. If you have trouble compiling, this post here >>58614927 might help. https://jii.moe is a good site to upload the compile.
>>
>>58671981
still here, haven't even rebooted, so the stuff is still in my ramdisk

if making a build machine, you just need the mingw crosscompiler toolchain, and the mingw stuff for sdl2
that's all this depends on (arguably sdl will pull in a bunch of its own depends, but it's not a whole lot)

had to add
  -I /usr/x86_64-w64-mingw32/include/SDL2/ \

to INCLUDES in the makefile this time, as now it's using SDL_video.h which it apparently didn't before, and it's in a different spot again on my distro

I've been using Ubuntu 14.04 since its release, and it's been serving me well all this time, until I somehow broke it.

So I thought I might as well upgrade to 16.04. Are there any good things about it, or should I just stick to 14.04? And as a side question, is systemd as much of a problem as people make it be, and how will I be affected by it? I don't want to dabble with the more technical distros like Arch, since I'm already far too used to debian-like distros.

Those of you on Fedora / CentOS / RHEL (maybe even SUSE) -

Do NOT install the NVIDIA driver from their website! It won't survive a kernel upgrade and is nasty as fuck to fix. Install the kmod-nvidia package. It is the same driver but will survive kernel upgrades. You will need (I forget which but install both) the EPEL or ELRepo repositories
