This man is a true genius and the most valuable Google engineer. He's like a God at Google and not even the CEO would go against him. He literally made Google what it is today and wrote/worked-on all of their most important software stacks. He's worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Now, notice something interesting:

He doesn't have two, three or four monitors and he doesn't have some gigantic TV screen that kills your focus and distracts him from everything important.
He doesn't have some bullshit meme mech keyboard with some special switches that were forged by elves in Japan from katana-grade steel and lights that emit perfect sRGB colors.
He doesn't have a mouse with refresh rate so high that it breaks spacetime continuum every time you slide it across your desk.
He doesn't have a $300 pair of audiophool grade headphones.
He doesn't have some super-expensive chair with all kinds of knobs and adjustments that can can even massage your prostate.
He doesn't have some tricked out text editor with million different features and colors.
He doesn't run some super-autistic Linux distro like Arch that demands you babysit it all the time.
He doesn't have some DE with customized CSS US that you usually see in tons of threads on here.
He didn't even change the default theme, colors or the default background.

He can afford all that shit, yet he doesn't waste his time on it. Instead, he writes 100x more lines of code than you and is 1,000,000x more accomplished than you'll ever be. And he's infinitely smarter than you'll ever be.

So quit falling for fucking memes and quit craving all the latest bullshit that gets posted on here in these cancerous consumerist "generals" threads that just make you feel inadequate. Just learn your craft and get better. What matters is what's in your head and how you express yourself and not what you have on your desk.

what all you consumerists don't understand is that buying new gear won't get you better at anything. and after you spend all of your monthly allowance on something, you'll crave some other shit because nothing will make you happy.

sorry anon but that's how the vicious cycle of consumerism works. solution is to break the cycle, not to buy more useless shit.

Mech keyboard is nice tbqh; he might benefit from one.

Minimalism is cool.
His chair probably was selected for him so it doesn't need adjustments.

OK retard. I see a lot of programmers at my job like this. What I think of them? They are plain, flawed people without passions. Most of the time they don't even know how to hardware or if they do, they are miles after what it is offered.
I like having nice things, not to impress others but because this is my passion. I am passionate about computer hardware, software and electronics.
I would rather be passionate about something that be an 2 dimension normy every time of a year.
Of course, build your skill, but know that all the money and skills on the world are useless if they can't buy you what you want.
If that is an simple as an cake now and then, good for you. But if you can't get what you want..what is the point in working for too at all?

>>58635490
To prove he is not a consumerist, you also need to talk about other aspects, such as about his house, his car etc. Buying premium tech devices are only a small part of consumerism. Not buying Mechanical Keyboards, Multiple monitors etc does not make you a non-consumerist--you may be driving in a Ferrari or own multiple genuine LV bags.
Furthermore, he uses a Macbook, and Macbooks are widely considered as premium "overpriced" products, purchased by "consumerists". Why isn't he using a Chromebook?
While excessive consumerism is indeed a bad trend, your evidence is outright lackluster.
>>58637653
Nice red herring. The example only shows(or try to show, since he have a Macbook) that someone being successful does not mean they would splurge on (technological-based) premium products, and not the other way round. Not to say OP did say "quit craving all the latest..." which is in a way telling us to "stop having nice things".

>>

>Furthermore, he uses a Macbook, and Macbooks are widely considered as premium "overpriced" products, purchased by "consumerists"
By /v/ children and autists maybe. For anybody actually involved in tech or even artists or doctors, Macbooks are just the basic hardware, no one further deems worth mentioning.

Though overall you have a point.
>>
>>58639554
Or maybe you haven't understood than just because the people don't waste their time on fancy shit doesn't mean they aren't passionate about technology? You won't reach the guys level without a passion for programming, he actually enjoys doing his job instead of enjoying spending money on colorful keycaps.

>all the money and skills on the world are useless if they can't buy you what you want.
Is an idiotic train of thought, people who are passionate about something see money as a bonus, they don't work for it.
>>
>>58635490
Then why does he have a $1000 monitor?
Really makes you think.
>>
>>58639536

You're still missing the point. It doesn't matter what he owns or doesn't own. The point is that he can do professional work and be successful without using flashy equipment. Shills on /g/ constantly try to convince you that you can't be taken seriously if you don't have multiple monitors, a mech keyboard and other shit. Being a consumerist and enjoying that stuff is fine, but being an autistic shill when someone working with tech doesn't have that stuff is just retarded.

>>58639429
>2 dimension normy every time of a year.

Is this how autists really think? I guess you're too much of a "intellectually superior intellectual" for all those normies.

Yes! Finally, an OP that gets it.
>the rest of your post
>using a Google slave as your prime example
There's a flaw here but I'm too stupid to point it out, but I can recognize it. The standards you're setting and using as an example are too high. Yes, consumerism is cancer, but I think that you pointing to a pivotal guy who worked at Google as the prime reason to not discuss consumer whoreship is illogical. I guess what I'm trying to say is talking about technology and wanting to learn about technology don't go hand in hand with being on the same level as that guy. Hell, I'm a poorfag and I can't afford to spend it on any of the nice things you're talking about, but that doesn't mean I'm a GOAT programmer. I just like CS, and I like computer architecture, so I like discussing them. Money spent doesn't necessarily correlate with how good you are at something, either positively or negatively. It's just my two cents, and it's not really worth much considering I'm a 2012/2013 newfag.

This is him at work. I'd like to see what he has at home.

But the thing is, that's irrelevant. I like to have 4 screens, I like the feel of my memechanical keyboard, I like my Fidelio X2s, they sound better than some piece of shit voice chat headset. I like my big monitor speakers for the same reason. If I were running Linux on other computers than my thinkpads, I would rice it to shit because I like it.

I don't code, the majority of /g/ doesn't. This isn't a coding board, I don't need to justify all that I own with productivity, very little has anything to do with it. I'd say my meme tech is more relevant to this board than programming, which has less to do with actual technology.

The only thing I like about his setup is the screen. I used to have one like that but it was a Samsung. 32 inches of 16:10 aspect ratio at 2560x1600. What a god damn beauty it was, shame it shit itself JUST after I got it.

>>58639664
>It doesn't matter what he owns or doesn't own
It really does, for that determines whether one is a consumerist or not.

>successful without using flashy equipment
Well of course you can be successful without using flashy equipment, but that is not related to the underlying issue with /g/'s obsession with certain technological products, nor does it show the vice versa, in this case about having premium products does not necessarily make you successful. Also, 'flashy equipment' highly subjective. To many a branded car and a Macbook would be much flashier than the memechanical keyboards and multiple screens, which you are likely going to use only at home anyway.

>Being a consumerist and enjoying that stuff is fine, but being an autistic shill when someone working with tech doesn't have that stuff is just retarded.
Shilling for a set of products is no longer consumerism, but fanboyism and excessive obsession with the said set of products. It have nothing to with buying something more expensive to show off--people in this board will laugh at you if you brag about purchasing a Quadro or Macbook.

It is not that I missed OP's point, but OP basically misrepresented the fundamental problem of many /g/ posters.

>these cancerous consumerist "generals" threads that just make you feel inadequate

You're the only one that feels inadequate here, buddy. Battlestations are where some of us spend 10-16 hours a day. There's no reason to bitch about someone spending money on things to make their life during those 10-16 hours better. Just buying things and placing them on your desk is stupid, it's the customizing and fine tuning to your own uses, needs, habits and comfort that is fun, and worthy of talking about. Building things is fun.

Anyways he probably rarely spends more then 4 hours at that desk a day. That's his work computer, he goes their to do work. Hell, it looks more like a team or project room and not like his actual office. Look in the reflection. Someone find his Twitter (or Google+ I guess?) and ask him for his home battlestation pic.

I don't even go on /g/, a friend linked this in IRC.

Terry Davis is an exceptional programmer who suffers from schizophrenia. He wrote his own operating system from scratch, starting with plain Assembly language.
TempleOS includes his own programming language called HolyC, a just-in-time compiler, utilities, games and a way to talk to God.
TempleOS has a few design peculiarities that make it interesting. It's like a modern Commodore 64.

He's done an interview on usesthis or HN (can't remember which) and he has a pretty boring setup. Basically stock Ubuntu LTS on both his home computer and his Thinkpad x1 carbon. He also prefers just a single large monitor because he tends to use extra monitors for useless distractions.
>>
>>58641647
He may not be running OSX.

I would be taking a huge leap here in assuming that software developers that develop for all operating systems would need to have all of them available when they need them. Obviously you can't boot into OSX without unreliable hacks on a non-Mac.

What exactly are you doing anyway? Blaming the fucker for being able to afford a good laptop?

What do free text editors and ethical obscure distros have to do with consumerism? They are less consumerist than corporate backed sludge like Ubuntu or Visual Studio.

Arch Linux + GNOME + emacs is a very stable set up that many Google engineers wouldn't argue with so fuck you.

Op is right, but the guys who get to a level of accomplishment never take the time to care about things like products brands or anything related to that, they keep forging forward because that is mostly what matters to them, their next project or challenge. The best guitar players in the world usually stick with the same style of guitar for long periods of time because they know it works for them, and they know how to make it work, same thing for anything in accomplishment, not to sound liek it's the initial
D 86 philosophy but it's true.

avoid the razor ones, the laser has a habit of just up and dying.

as shit as logitech software is, the g600 is easily one of the best mice i have used outside of the intellimouse 3

If you get it, DO NOT set the mouse's lights to automatically turn off and on given in use. A very fun bug I had to diagnose was this, when the mouse sleeps, it puts all input to sleep, if the software hangs at all, yous computer may as well have crashed because there is no coming back from this, only ctrl alt delete has any function and only while the screen is blue.

Set up a default profile, and have the color the mouse turns change to something like red or a color you will not normally use, the software sucks dick and will lose focus every now and then, the color change really helps with knowing when that happens.

Also, and this may be something you look into yourself, each profile has 3 modes, I suggest you change the color of them so you know if a mode was accidently switched to. Remember, the software sucks so much dick and logitech are incompetent as fuck so things that should be obvious are so shitty to use.

I personally have a profile where the left and middle click change positions when shift clicked, however the software bugs constantly and the middle click just won't work till i shift click and use the button I assigned middle click.

Overall, there is no company that makes good software + hardware for mmo mice, but logitech, once you deal with the quarks seems to be the most competent... god that's fucking sad.

however /g/ did convince me that there is value in used thinkpads, the cheap ass sansa clip, the cheapest macbooks, $100 android smartphones, and long-lasting devices with ongoing software support

Just because some guy is a tech guru doesn't mean you should copy him.
If we're going to talk about false idols let's add personality worship to the list.
People should do what they like, /g/ is about technology but not everybody here is working in tech. To many people having a cool looking computer is the extend they care about it, and they get to have their threads.
There are people that program, they have their threads where they talk about code and algorithms.
And so on, just because this one guy is super cool and probably rich and very respected does not mean he is the role model for every anon.
This board isn't exclusive to one group of people, it's for technology, and much of technology is consumerist.
If you want a more narrow group - either stick to your peoples threads or go to reddit. I mean it unironically.

No, it's emacs. See the icon on the left side.

It used to be that /g/ used to have this duality to it: What would be awesome if you had infinite moneys, and what would be doable on a reasonable budget. However, the influx of retards lately has changed this.

>>58637126
Having 2 screens is really useful, but it's not essential.

>>58639054
Having stuff on the off-monitor is useful. Having your emails, docs, VMs etc. as glanceable information is useful.

It's a small investment and it pays out on average. Just don't spend $5 000 on a monitor.

>>58639815
Emacs. Look at the icon on the left.

Must be neo/g/. I don't see how OP "owned" anyone. I've never seen a thread where someone said owning 40 monitors would make you code better, in fact, this isn't even a coding board. It's about, or at least it was, about discussing technology.

Also, idol worship or trying to copy more successful people's computer set ups is stupid.

>>
>>58648769
Or just jealous poorfags desperately trying to grasp at straws, justifying for themselves why the people they actually would want to be more like are wrong.

I mean give me a break, I would be the first one to get in line when there's a thread bashing people using studio equipment for music listening, for the very same reason I see no "owning" here: everything mentioned is just a matter of what you are supposed to have around you when you are working versus what you'd be better off having at home with just about everything on this list.
