can't decide between these four open back headphones

Sennheiser HD 598 SE used $117
Audio Technica AD500X new $73

what I want in a headphone from most to least important is

>>58630841
Mostly irrational gibberish. Audio-Technica raised the price, changed the pads into a bit softer ones and made cable detachable with three cables included in the box. Overpriced is very subjective, I don't think they are. They fill a niche of bassy/V-shaped closed back headphones with foldable construction in their price point. I don't care for them personally, I not only find them somewhat uncomfortable but I also think the cheaper M40X has a nicer response. But that's my opinion. I sold them to a friend who swears by them, loving the sound.

Yes. Your MBP is unlikely to power 250Ω headphones adequately, which usually leads to overall worse performance (clarity, punch, attack etc.)

>>
>>58631423
If you lack volume, yes. Otherwise no. rMBP has low Zout headphone output with good performance. Being a laptop you might not have enough voltage at your disposal for decent listening volume. And in this case you would benefit from an amplifier to drive the headphones loud enough.

>>58631447
No. Impedance is irrelevant, especially so when the impedance is high. Clarity, punch and attack are just descriptions of the frequency response and this isn't altered.

They changed things up it seems. That's a different box and cable that came with the one I bought sometime last year. My cable is 3 meters, had one metal end and one rubber, and the box was mostly black. Looks like the same cable material though, and over time it should straighten out.
>>
>>58633456
Just realized they added an S one the end of the model number. Makes enough sense. They did a few cost cutting measures, like not using the gold plating, and including a 1/4 inch adapter. At least they're in production and sold for cheap, and the prices aren't rising now.
>>
I just bought superlux 668b. Someone please tell me I didn't buy shit that only lasts a year.
>>
>>58633571
You bought something that lasts forever and I'll tell you why;

668B's are good, but only when you get new pads, and then they're just good. You'll want more, and you'll justify buying more. Before you know it, you'll have purchased Fidelio x2's used on eBay or literally any other headphone. You'll put your 668B's to one side, and they'll last forever - while you listen using your newest set of headphones.

Tell me I'm wrong, I thrive on other people's tears.

Only notable one is the CAL. I like it a lot despite being very flimsy and the cups are small for my ears.

Thanks much.

I would also like to know about options for a dac/amp separate from the cost of the headphones at $100 or below. I hear the Fulla 2 is recommended but I don't think it and other usb only dac/amps can be used for consoles? Console use is a much lower priority but it would be nice and worth extra cost without compromising quality. My mobo does not have an optical out so it would need both inputs.

I am that guy who got an Element DAC/AMP recently, and I was finally able to test it right. Overall it's an improvement over my stock macbook, tighter bass (altho a bit dry), better detail, better highs and things just sound clearer. HOWEVER, there is one thing that I didn't enjoy at all and that bugs me out more and more, vocals. Vocals feel dryer, they sound clearer and more detailed with Element, but dryer. I don't want to trow fancy words, but Vocals sound expressionless with Element. My headphones are HD600 and yes I know HD650 are warmer sounding but I've got HD600 and I don't feel like replacing them.

What should I do? I still can return Element and get refund. Should I do it and look for another amp/dac? Which one? Or maybe I can equalise female vocals to sound less dry? I live and die by the vocals.

You really won't know without a double blinded test and you can't set up one without proper equipment. In the case two amplifiers sound different, one of them is defective or unsuitable for the load. The Element is good and so should be the MacBook aside from the possible lack of volume. Reasons why I doubt there's any meaningful difference between the two(aside from volume):

>both devices have good headphone outputs
>HD 600 is not a hard load as long as you have enough voltage(volume)
>you did a sighted listening test which is as good as useless at evaluating amplifier performance for plethora of reasons
>your descriptions of sound don't mean anything specific and don't correlate with how amplifier could alter the sound

Might as well forget the amplifier part. It really isn't some magic device which makes your headphones sound better and any case the Element is certainly powering the HD 600s without any audible shortcomings.

Install equalizer APO if you are on Windows. I can't be of much help on other operating systems but any parametric equalizer will do. You should look for 1-3 KHz region first and lower it slightly if you find vocals harsh. Extend the range up to 5 KHz if needed, play with different filters.
>>
>>58635752
those look so pitiful
>>
>>58636829
>you did a sighted listening test which is as good as useless at evaluating amplifier performance for plethora of reasons

I am not gonna go as far as describing and nitpicking on every possible sound character, but saying that without AB comparison nothing can be told apart is silly. Bass changed and it's noticeable, no matter the volume levels the one on the Element is tighter than on macbook.

I will mess around with EQ then, thank's for the advise on regions.

I have no idea what part of the cable the problem originates from.

The cable runs into the left ear first and then goes into the right ear, so I would assume the problem is the cable running from the left to the right ear... but that's just a guess. Either way I already ordered for Amazon pickup... I just don't know when they'll get here.

I'm starting to wonder if SR950s are more what I want. I was hoping high impedance would be good, but the Dt770s are relatively shallow soundstage compared to the AKG K550s I used to have, and the bass seems to drown out the mids for gaming.

I'm kind of at an impasse. I want to hear footsteps well in games but I don't want a boring listening experience like the AKG K550s had.

The bass drop off is defintely not near as bad as the 668B/850. Mids are less recessed and the treble isn't as 'in your face' as the 850/668B. Pads/headband/cable are the same as the 850. Although the soundstageis obviously less because they're closed, it's still good for a closed headphone.
>>
>>58638506
No external amp but I have a Sound Blaster Audigy FX I got recently but never put it to use really. Budget <€150/$175. Sorry should have stated that before.
>>
>>58638343
The system works great unless you decide to atomic elbow the jack at the connection seam and the edge of the desk, then you pull out whatever's left and get a new 3.5 male to male.
>>
>>58638545
K550 isn't really boring, it's balanced, meaning a small boost in bass & treble

consider getting the 7506 with replacement pads

>>58638556
dt880 is prob your best bet
>>
>>58638623
They just didn't have any kick. They were extremely flat and brighter songs tuned out the bass immediately.

DT880 are €216. Quite out of budget and I don't understand how these are so expensive when 770 and 990 are way cheaper

What the hell is with all the chinklux shilling here? Probably over half of the replies mention them.

Why would anyone seriously waste money on that throwaway shabby trash?

alternatively, if you're in the US, have a look at K553
it's basically a US exclusive better version of the K550s with a bit more bass

massdrop currently has them for "sale"
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-k553-pro-studio-headphone?referer=2YVXYC&mode=guest_open

Another option if you want bass but no treble is Xpt100/HM5.

>>58638674
It's cheap and it's good. There's more of a quality difference between the average cheapo headphone/gamer headset and chinklux than there is between chinklux and hifi shit like hd600. As such, getting people in touch with high quality cheap options is often for the best
>>

>Why would anyone seriously waste money on that throwaway shabby trash?

I've had mine for over two years. Better build quality than any Sennheiser or AKG I've had, excluding my HD600's and K612's.

I'm starting to consider the SR950s based on Head-Fi reviews (And their price).

Supposedly flat response but easy to equalize (I have a Fiio E10k with bass boost for more fun listening), velour earpads for comfort (since the dt770s I have to send back now were at least very comfortable), and a wide soundstage good for gaming.

The only thing I can't really get out of it is high impedance but not even headphones equal to dt770s in price have high impedance these days.

HD650 will sound overall better than some cheap noname headphones, but you would rather feed them at least spotify so they can sound even better! Otherwise they are not the most quality demanding cans. ALOSO, if you don't know check out massdrop, its a website where people do a bulk buying to drive price down and it looks like people will never get enough of HD650 that you can get for 200$ if drop goes ones again and something tells me it will.

Anyone had schiit Vali 2 or little dot MK3? I am thinking about getting one of them for mine HD600, how do they sound with these? I also heard that little dot has some grounding problems and small shit like that, there is one on a massdrop now.
>>
>>58630888
Okay I think I have a proper diagnosis on this now at least.

What's happening is that the longer it's plugged in... the left ear loses power gradually.

So if I unplug the headphones for a while, they'll go back to normal, but if I use them for a while, they'll start losing power to the left ear gradually until it's hard for me to notice, and all the power to the left ear goes out eventually.

Extremely strange but these need to be returned.

I think I'm going to buy Samson SR950s, since they are wide sounstage and velour pads; the Dt770s aren't that great for gaming. Footsteps get kind of drowned out and the soundstage is hollow.

And I'm not sure I wanna take the change again with AKG K553s. My last pair of 550s was a bit flimsy.

the DT 770's are a good fit from that description but since they're a gift, your friend might find them autistic looking
its hard to think of other warm/v shaped closed headphones that are also good with vidya. I think the Audio Technica solid bass series has decent soundstage but not sure. The V Moda m100 has a decent soundstage with the xl pads and look cool af but they're beyond your budget
>>
>>58644619
The driver probably didn't die, but rather the wiring either in the cable or in the headphones themselves has come loose at a solder point or something. Open them up and solder whatever came loose.

If that isn't the case and it turns out the driver has sadly passed on, replace the driver. Either buy drivers from china, or salvage from another headphone. Buy from eBay or Aliexpress if you want to just buy drivers.

Beyond FR, there's really nothing in headphones which alters that and absolutely nothing which would have an effect on the spatial hearing mechanisms and make things easier/harder to locate. Headphones can't create information which isn't already there in the signal.

>>58647993
So footsteps are important in games? You could always boost the range which is recessed. Something tells me these are learned abilities(player's skill and experience with the game and their equipment) rather than something which is limited by a pair of headphones you use, especially one with decent enough response like DT770.
>>
>>58644646
Thanks friend
>>
>>58648281
Soundstage can't be boosted.
>>
>>58648387
Yes and no. You don't alter it with headphones aside from FR. You can alter the FR with EQ and at most it alters the sense of the space. I don't understand the point of it as soundstage isn't something headphones create or even have. Headphone's presentation is always a claustrophobic one, inside your head. And like I said, beyond FR headphones don't make you hear things better in games or other media so I fail to see the connection between headphone "soundstage" and importance in games(which differ vastly and imo do not set any specific requirements for your audio system in the first place). The location cues are baked in the signal, not created by the headphones.

>Soundstage isn't a meme
What does that mean?
>I know because I've used different headphones with different soundstages and they all give off different impressions.
Different headphones tend to have rather obvious differences in sound. This sound mainly just the frequency response or more precisely, frequency response at the eardrum. The FR partly alters whatever people consider to be a "soundstage" in headphones. In quotations because it really isn't a soundstage, it's a "headstage" where all sounds are coming from inside your head and will remain as such unless DSP operations are carried out(crossfeed) or the audio content itself compensates for the headphones' inherent inability to present a soundstage by having it baked into the signal(binaural recordings).

If you have something plugged in the line out, it defaults to that. It'll switch to your headphones when you plug them in.

Anyone see the new German Maestro drop on Massdrop? Haven't heard of these phones, they any good? Seems like a substantial discount. Should I grab these over a pair of Fostex T50RP mk3's?

What is a cheap but comfortable (preferably cloth ear cushioned and 3.5mm jack) headset that will do for games and talking to people?

This isn't for me, I already have Sennheiser 558s and a mic. My little sister however is getting her first PC built by me but I'm not dropping a lot of cash on kick ass headphones for her. She just needs something that'll get the job done for talking on skype and hearing in her games.

Anyone have experience with the hd 598s vs the akg q701?
>>

Feels fucking good man.

I've got a request though.

My brother is looking to get some premium headphones, but he's not sure what to go for.

He and I used the same computer fora while and i've got Sennheiser 558's and have had them for years and loved them, so I recommended he get a pair of these or a pair of 598s. Which would he be better off with?
>>
>>58654752

Luckily I already know most of everything

>Type of headphone
Full-sized
>Open or closed
He's fine with either but typically likes isolating noise so i'd guess he'd prefer closed. Open is fine too though since he's used my 558s for a while
>Comfort level
Max comfy, is at his comp for hours listening to music and playing vidya
>Sound signature
Neutral

>>58654839
Yeah, 598 or DT880 80ohm would probably be the best options for open. K7XX or HD6XX if he already has an amp.

For closed neutral, the closest you're gonna get is Brainwavz HM5 or M40x + HM5 pads [or better pads since you have the budget for it]

So why are these shilled so hard? you have to roll them up and insert them every time you take them off, and I'm constantly taking off my IEMs because I only wear them outside.

probably because they're comfortable, unlike almost every other tip out there

What the fuck? Please be trolling. I haven't visited /hpg/ for a few weeks and this is the horseshit that I'm seeing here?

As opposed to someone calling them warm and gooey?
>>
>>58625852
What soundcards does /hpg/ have experience with? Im looking into upgrading from onboard because its terrible but im not intrested in rising to the level of external DACs and AMPs

Mostly for videos, gaming and movies; normal run of the mill stuff.
>>
>>58657326
If you can find a cheap Essence STX, go for it, it's as good as it gets and comparable to most good amp+dac combos.

STX II is technically a little bit better but it comes with useless baggage like that mini card for 7.1 which makes it more expensive.

Everything else is junk.

and M40x for portable use.

or is there something better around the same price range?
>>
>>58657467
Really? Everything else is junk?
Could you share some more on that? Im genuinely interested.
>>
>>58657550
You can get something like a Fiio Q1 or E10k for cheaper and it would be more functional than something permanently stuck to your motherboard.
If you only need it for casual stuff a portable or entry level DAC/amp combo should be more than enough.
>>
>>58657550
You have the Soundblaster gaymer surround snake oil stuff and some cheap options (like Xonar DGX) that might or might not be better than modern onboard stuff.

Essence STX/STX II are the only models specifically made for music and headphones, and they still have top notch output for speakers as well. Like I said, they're comparable to most good amp and dac combos mentioned here until you get into the 400$ price range so they're a solid choice if you don't mind forfeiting volume control knob.
>>
>>58657326
just buy a external dac/amp and don't bother with internal sound card and all the software bloat that comes with it.

buy a Fiio 10k for $75 of a Schiit Fulla 2 for $100

and if you want surround sound just download Razer Surround for free.

look into Hifimediy

250 if you already have an amp.
80 if you don't.
80 and 250 will benefit from an amp though not necessary for the 80.
>>
>>58659277
Thanks I have an amp and the 80 is a bit cheaper and I've read it's better with bass which I prefer
>>
>>58659299
I believe the 80 has slightly more than the rest or has better sub bass than the rest.
