I used it, but only for a little while, didn't do too much tinkering, but I think it's a pretty good.
The configuration is straightforward and it's much simpler than i3 for example.
Definetely give it a try, now that you've reminded me, I might give it another go as well.

it gets done it hangs at the "connecting to blah blah blah" but it hangs for about 2 minutes before it goes through. i think its my router but theres nothing i can do because its a leased router and it doesnt have an option to allow all traffic on port 80, and it might not even be that because i tried ftp.us.debian and ftp.ca.debian and it all does the same thing, and the wierd part is sometimes itll not hang at all itll just go through

How straightforward are we talking about? i3 has those damned dotfiles that are OK, awesome requires some basic lua knowledge the last time I tried it.

I understand that configuring a WM is a lot different than a DE but I would like to make one look somewhat decent (not trying to rice here) without needing a physics degree, so to speak.

I have a quick question. I own a GTX 770 and I'm currently using Windows 7 as my operating system. What would be the best way to get the latest drivers for my particular graphics card?

I'm going to be buying a pci-e pass-through compatible motherboard/cpu in the future for some games, but is there a best way to get the most out of my GTX 770 in a Linux environment.
Thank you.

Any decent distro will have the latest stable drivers for that Nvidia in their repositories.

Fedora only requires the addition of the non-free repo (takes a few seconds to add this repo) in order to use the recommended proprietary Nvidia blob.

Bitch just backup whatever is in /home, reinstall the the same distribution, reinstall the software you used and you'll get literally the result you wanted.

No fucking clue why would anyone go through the hassle of backing up root if you used a generic distribution that's still available, up and running.

every bit of data that's relevant is in /home.

System-wide configurations.
You care about user configurations, which are located in /home

Everything expect /proc, /run and so on. It's a lot easier to just rsync the whole lot over than just parts. Then you just have to update fstab and you're done.

And remember, if it's not backed up, you are willing to lose it.

I just fired up VMWare Player for the first time in months so I could revisit the bland delights of Linux (I am a Wincuck and proud of it). This time, though, I had my PDF of The Linux Bible open next to it so I could learn some basic introductory shit. And that is why I have come here to ask...

Does CentOS have fucking ANYTHING on it? Pretty much everything I tried, was not found. "Anon, see what file manager you have in Fedora!" It looks like I don't have either of the ones listed. "Anon, try these cool applications! They're in Fedora, but hey, the differences are minimal!" Nope, I don't have a single one.

Basically, Debian stable gets all the attention from Debians security team, Testing and Unstable don't really get touched and have a constant stream of security bugs. Hence why they recommend the stable branch.

Fedora is more up to date than Debian Testing/Sid and has a dedicated security team. This means you get the latest software with the assurance of a dedicated security team.

The only negative to Fedora is you will need to add RPM Fusion (a third party repo) to get access to multimedia software and codecs, this is a considerable downside, as you can not know the legitimacy of the package you have downloaded.

Hope this helps, friend

This all depends on how much you want to save. I would recommend only keeping /home and then reinstalling everything else you need.

If you want to simply save EVERYTHING just in case of total screwup, and then only restore stuff you need later, i would recommend:

rsync -arv / path_to_backup_device

My library encoding script fucked up and now I have several hundred maybe thousand OGG files that are redundant but in a way that fdupes doesn't seem to want to pick up, be it some with a number tag as "-1", or some simply with a different filename but counting as different because of I guess different encode times. Is there a way to recursively find and delete these files lest I spend the hours I have left until I should be waking up going through them and deleting them myself?

>mfw you are too intelligent to use gnome

So after a long and painful goodby period, I finally realised that KDE is dead for good.

The logical thing to do, seems to switch over to its big antagonist, gnome.

Now I do understand that gnome works different from KDE and has less customization options, but there are just some things that are so wrong on so many levels that I can't ignore them.

But how the hell do I set anything in this bugger?

Settings is essentially worthless. The most obvious things I need to change, but can't figure out how are:
>have some kind of taskbar, panel or dock that shows my running programs. I know what activities is, but this is tied to some expose-like stuff, which, while sometimes useful and nice, totally breaks my focus. I just wanna keep my eyes on say firefox, throw my mouse to the left, look there for a split second and click on e.g. file manager
>where are the settings in file mananger? The stuff available in the burger menu is a joke. Alternatively: What FM can emulate dolphin? (Have a terminal available in the FM, have a preview panel or preview on hover)
>How do I get a proper task switcher? I dont want icons for the running "apps", I want a list of the windows and their titles on my current virtual desktop.
>where are virtual desktops?
>how do I make use of all the wastet space at the top? 90% of the space are just black. Where do I set a shortcut to view my CPU and RAM use there? Seems like this is the status bar anyways (I get WIFI status there already).

Addons. There's a bunch of them.

GNOME Files is very limited. Replace it with Nemo if you want more functionality.

Agreed. However having some basic options to change fucking anything is.

I disagree. Enabling me to view and organize my running applications is one of its basic functionalities!
>>
>>58526991

>Agreed. However having some basic options to change fucking anything is.
No, your window manager should not touch anything toolkit related and they never do.
That "wasted" space you're complaining about isn't a product of GNOME's window manager, it's the GNOME applications making use of GTK3's header bar widgets. Switch to programs that don't use header bars.

>I disagree. Enabling me to view and organize my running applications is one of its basic functionalities!
It's out of the scope for a window manager. That's what taskbars are for.

Its there when I run gnome applications, its there when I run non-gnome applications, its there when I am in gnomes activities menu, it gives me acces to basic gnome functionality… Who else should be responsible for that besides gnome?
>That's what taskbars are for.
And thos are basic functionality of it (or the DE). when I install some full blown thing like gnome (unlike some autismo fest like ratpoison or xmonad) I expect that everything is taken care of and that I have at least some basic settings.

I assume you were talking about GNOME programs' headerbars. It appears you're talking about GNOME's taskbar on the top. I don't know how it works, but it's their choice. They will most likely point you to the addons.

>And thos are basic functionality of it (or the DE). when I install some full blown thing like gnome (unlike some autismo fest like ratpoison or xmonad) I expect that everything is taken care of and that I have at least some basic settings.
Why are you so entitled? No one is forcing you to use GNOME. They do their thing. Submit bug reports and hope it gets fixed or fix it yourself.

I don't like GNOME and don't use it. That's the other way normal people deal with this situation. The other one is submitting bug reports and suggestions.

You seem to have made a bit of a mist ake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. But I am being forced to use gnome. By the KDE retards who can't produce anything stable.
And I am just trying to understand how the hell gnome works. Because for most things so far, I can't understand what the hell the reason for them is.
Seems like addons would fix a lot of it, but the gnome site lists hundres of extension, but fedora only has about 20 of them in their repos, so they aren't exactly useful to me.
>>

You can install extensions directly from the website using Firefox. Normally I advocate the usage of a package manager, but in this case it might be okay, because it won't be installed globally anyway, but in your HOME directory.

with virtualbox on windows for example;
vboxmanage.exe internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename c:\drive9.vmdk -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive9

vboxmanage.exe is in virtualbox's program files folder, run it from cmd as administrator
to find out what drive number to use, open Disk Management and note the numbers on the lower left hand side

you can then add that vmdk as a disk in a VM, run virtualbox as administrator as well, otherwise it won't have permission to access the physical disk

also note; dismount volumes on that drive before using it in the VM, that is, remove any drive letters assigned to it first (you can do so from Disk Management)
if you mount a volume both on the host and the vm, corruption will ensue

1. repartition your flash drive. Create one large, primary partition, set it to active. Set filesystem type of the partition to 7 - hpfs/ntfs
2. format the partition to NTFS. you can use gparted or from console:
mkntfs -f /dev/sdXN

3. mount the partition somewhere
4. mount your windows iso to somewhere
mount -o loop /path/to/iso/windows_10.iso /media/cdrom

5. copy EVERYTHING from your iso (the directory your mounted it) to the flash drive
6. umount your iso and flash drive
7. install ms-sys (it's in apt or in a ppa)
8. use ms-sys to make your device bootable
ms-sys -mbr7 /dev/sdX
ms-sys --ntfs /dev/sdXN

with mbr7 you need to target the device like sdb
with --ntfs you need to target the partition like sdb1

Only pure coincidence that another anon is asking sort of the same question re: Wayland BUT

I was starting out the process of switching out i3 to Wayland+Sway but I read the github page for Sway which says that using Nvidia's proprietary drivers is not supported.

I've looked into a lot of shit regarding Nvidia's (halfhearted) efforts to support Wayland itself but can't find anything about someone trying out Sway on Nvidia drivers.
Does this mean that the Nvidia drivers are out of the question for Sway or just that they won't offer help for people who run into problems using it?
If Nvidia is to be believed, that shit is compatible with Wayland itself (and by extension probably Weston), so what in Sway makes it so different?

I can guinea pig this shit out for what actually happens but I've got other shit to do atm and just want to understand how this all works.

If i3 on X11 works and Wayland works, then what would make a port of i3 onto Wayland not work?

This might've been fixed. I don't know, I don't want to try.

To do it do
systemctl disable lightdm

systemctl stop lightdm

If something goes wrong just reenable lightdm with
systemctl enable lightdm

systemctl start lightdm

Could someone help me understand why URxvt/Zsh would no longer be able to display certain characters following a system reinstall?

Searching told me that urxvt simply didn't support the fonts but there's no way that's correct, as it was working perfectly on my previous install.

I know this is probably a retarded question but /sqt/ isn't up and I am 100% willing to work with you and try any suggestions.

that's what i ran verbatim for that one, i just tweak it as required (-ss/-t if i need just a segment, change qmin/qmax if the result is too big, etc)

when it comes to clips like that with little changes, having a larger GOP makes all the difference

Is the most recent version of Firefox horribly broken for everyone else (on Arch Linux)? The loading icon on tabs spins forever, even when the page is fully loaded; and YouTube videos just don't load. The rest of the page loads but the video is just a black box. It's annoying.

I'm trying to install Fedora but I'm confused about partitions.
Do I need a /, /boot and /home? How about size?
>>
>>58533093
google can't see your MAC, your MAC is only relevant for your LAN, not the internet

an ISP could technically block your router by it's MAC, but i haven't heard of any that do that
>>
>>58533111
You only need a /, but you will regret that decision. Boot only needs to be about a gig. / is where all installed programs go, and /home is where all your files go. On my 500GB hard drive / is 100GB, /boot is 1GB and /home is everything else because I keep a lot video and pictures on my drive.

>>
>>58533111
you can use a single partition, provided your bootloader supports the filesystem you choose for it
a separate /boot makes sense for multiboot (though not required for it) and for when your root is not a bootloader-supported filesystem
a separate /home might make sense for a few cases, such as;
- keeping root nearer the beginning of a hdd, where it's the fastest
- sharing it with another root (multiboot)
- using a different filesystem
- placing it on a separate physical disk (for example, root on an ssd, home on a hdd)
etc

it's basically just firefox ESR with restrictive artwork/branding swapped out, plus a few privacy-related defaults (which can be removed)
it's compatible with firefox profiles

>>58532913
You have the choice of the two desktop environments that currently run on Wayland (which is a must due to security issues with xserver) these are GNOME and KDE.

GNOME is based on GTK3 and has a more unconventional user interface, KDE is based on Qt and uses a Windows like user interface and is much more customisable than GNOME, though a tad more buggy and resource heavy.

no, IceCat 45.5.1 (current) is based on FireFox ESR 45.5.1 (current)

It's on-par security-wise with regular firefox

firefox esr is like the "debian stable" of firefox, held back feature-wise, but security patches are current
